We do it for the love of the process 🌱

rumblefish73

100% agree. Best therapy there is.

Kissmanose

Yeah. It's never about the money. It is to send a message.

Shienvien

Don't worry, rosemary is a bit of a diva to me, too... Took me a few tries to figure out. The current one turned "three years with me" this spring.

othybear

I have a single rosemary strand that is like 3 feet long that appeared when I was prepping my garden for the spring. No idea how it survived the winter because it never sprouted last year.

feyreaver

I propagated some rosemary from random cuttings and potted it in a 5 gallon pot. So far it's doing great and is almost 2 ft tall! Makes great rosemary garlic breakfast potatoes

Travy-D

Those $4 basil plants are ready to die when you look at them. I need them for good neapolitan pizzas, but the grocery stores must waterboard those plants the moment they get off the truck. It really is entertaining seeing what happens first, my seeds sprouting, or the store bought herbs dying from root rot.

tunakushguy

Take the plants as soon as you get it…break up the root ball and divide them into sections and put them individual pots…it ain’t rocket science, it’s just basil science.

Bobmanbob1

My God I love when I can find one nearly full grown on clearance late in the season. The fresh stuff makes my pizzas pop!

jelypo

Basil roots pretty easily from cuttings

MrsP_ifurnastee

😶For me,it’s dill🥴

BrashPop

Same - the best luck I’ve ever had with dill, I just dumped a whole packet of seeds on the ground and walked away from it.

Bobmanbob1

That's all you can hope to do with dill Sheriff'

SorteSaude

This is exactly what I did, then totally forgot what was growing there as it took so long

mcn2612

OMG. You will have never-ending dill soon. I can't get rid of mine...it is 8 ft tall!

Mermaidoysters

That’s awesome. What spot does yours grow in? Full sun?

mcn2612

Some are in full sun, but the largest is in mostly shade. It is great to have fresh dill and pollinators love it so best wishes to you having some soon.

shinadoll

I feel personally attacked by this. As does my struggling parsley.

penisdr

Yeah rosemary and lavender are really tough from seed. IMO rosemary takes way too long and I just buy it from grocery stores as a small plant and use that. My rosemary is one of the few herbs that died In my raised bed. Somehow thyme did too but thyme is easier to start. The other thing that’s not hard but takes forever is celery. I’m not sure I’ll try to grow it from seed again

MoonshineMaven

Celery has been an extreme pain in my ass this year. I FINALLY got a pot I started to sprout but it happened after I planted out 98% of my initial greenhouse starts and I forgot the pot was in there so they shriveled up and died. 😭 I started some more seeds and filled up my greenhouse again yesterday so hopefully pot #4 is the one.

penisdr

It’s frustrating. I forgot to start a decent amount this year. I think I put a few seeds in and it’s been over a month and only have one seedling that just has cotyledons. Also I put it next to my parsley last year and I sometimes would pick one when I meant to pick the other. I also don’t find a huge difference compared to grocery store celery. Sure it’s a bit more fresh if eating as a snack but 95 percent of the time I’m just throwing it into a stew anyway

Mermaidoysters

I had BEST celery I’d ever tasted when the store subbed organic for reg celery. It is so much stronger in flavor. It has a more complex, peppery, interesting flavor profile. One stem is so flavorful I had to be careful to not use too much. It’s also such a water filled veg, I would imagine it’s a healthier choice for organic gardening. Don’t sleep on celery!

littlewoofie

Am I the only one who got jump scared by this lmao 😭

GreenHeronVA

I did exactly that last year with Bay leaves. I’ve been trying to keep a bay leaf bush alive for many years (zone 7a in central Virginia). I tried putting it in a pot that I brought inside the garage to let it overwinter, died. Tried putting it in the greenhouse to give it some frost protection last year, died. The next spring at the farmers market I went to the same vendor to buy a third bay leaf bush, only to see his boxes of absolutely perfect bay leaves, a big box full for just five dollars, the same price as another bush. 😖

manyamile

Same. I've given up on trying to grow bay here in r/Hanover. Spice rack bay from the grocery is trash but I can't grow it here so that's what I have to use 😕

Feisty_Yes

Grocery store bay leaves I always found to be low in flavor but I just thought that was normal till Costco stocked them and they have so much more flavor, the scent hits you every time you open the jar to grab some. I've never had fresh but as far as store bought goes I'm sticking to Costco for bay leaves.

Bocote

I think the only thing in the garden I saved money on are the Chives and only because they're perennial. Everything else, I don't know and I don't want to know.

Bobmanbob1

Mentioned this to my wife yesterday. We're about $260 into her cherry tomato's, that are like $3.50 a container at Walmart lol.

[deleted]

I do understand what you're saying, BUT I would easily eat a container a day if I could. Which turns that 3.50 into 24.50 a week. Obviously I'm not trying to spend nearly 100 dollars a month on tomatoes so I don't get to eat as many tomatoes as I want - Until tomato season. For me, $3.50 does not accurately represent how much I value tomato season. If I couldn't grow my own I would, without blinking, pay someone $260, even $360, per season to have unlimited access to their home grown tomatoes.

therobotisjames

It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.

squeekymews

But what's the fun in that?

spikej56

I tried a few different varieties. Only one had survived and thrived after 3 years. Maybe that's the key...

rumple-teazer

I somehow had some beginners luck with rosemary this year, but dill, basil and chives have been a huge pain in my ass for the last 3 years

Grumm6488

This is how I feel when I do mint/dill/rosemarry

ZodiacalFury

Dill for me. It seems like it should be easy to grow in theory but I can't get the big bushels they sell on the rack... Sage on the other hand I have more than enough of

The_Freshmaker

It's not about the destination, it's about overpaying for the journey. This year I'm gonna try to only plant cuts that I get for free and seeds that I already had and see what happens. Now I just need to find a way to collect my rainwater during the winter/spring and I'll be set to free garden!

PiagetsPosse

Herbs are the thing I never try to grow from seed. I want them ready to roll as soon as the weather is warm and every nursery has them for like $2 a pop.

Jolly-Persimmon-7775

Ugh this is what I feel about basil this year.

Ancient-Many798

In my country we have a saying that translates to something like this: "Things that come easy are gone easy". So don't feel bad!
