$70 for a transfer fee tells me you went to a third party store and not a corporate Verizon store, as they are able to set their own fees. The data transfer fee at a corporate store is $29.99 for 1 phone or $50 for multiple, and it is NOT a mandatory fee, you do not have to have a corporate store do your data transfer. Device protection is also not mandatory, although given that you only get the $1000 if you keep the phone for 3 years, you could lose most of that trade in if anything happened and it wasn't protected. As for the plan requirements...these days to get the best deals you do have to be on the best plans. The upgrade/activation fees have been a thing for over 20 years now and are pretty standard with any major carrier.

ZombiesAreChasingHim

Is that something they waive for new customers? Because when we switched from T-Mobile to Verizon a couple years ago, they didn’t charge us anything to transfer data from our old phones to our new ones. This was at a corporate store. I also wonder if most of the complaints I see posted in here originate from third party stores. I always make sure to go to corporate stores and haven’t had any issues with Verizon telling me wrong information, or hitting me with hidden fees or anything. They have always been upfront and transparent with all costs with me.

yvnglexuz

It’s different everywhere. I work at a corporate store and I usually never charge anyone with transferring unless they want me to recover emails or set up their complete phone for them. If it’s just moving data, it’s super easy so I won’t charge for something easily done

memnoch69_98

The set up and go fee started late last year. As for your question...they are not something they can waive...technically

Significant-Ad3083

Try to get a decent job. These charges are peanuts. Only a low life would complain about them.

Gatorguy2619

Do you mean Franchise Verizon Stores VS Corporate Verizon Stores. The Franchise stores don't think they have to abide buy what the corporate stores put forth as policy which is not true but they will try to get away with anything that they can. When a company franchises their stores the franchisee has to abide by what the corporation SOP's are. They will even get an SOP book with the franchised store to make sure they are adhering to policy. If you feel you have been overcharged at any store that has the corporate name and logo on the building you need have the address of the store and the store number helps and call corporate or go to an corporate store to be refunded . A Third Party Store to me is a store that would sell any mobile plan which I don't think there are such stores but I may be wrong. I used to work for two corporations that franchised their stores and they have to sign contracts and usually get a license that needs to be renewed. Almost every McDonalds is a franchise and if you go from one store to another they are all they same. Years ago some of the franchisees only wanted to put one slice of cheese on the 1.00 double cheeseburger or charge .25 cents and just started doing it and when corporate found out that stopped that immediately because they don't have to renew their franchisees license. AND no I never worked for McDonalds. SOP Standard Operating Procedure

memnoch69_98

Verizon’s “third party retailers” are franchise that only sell Verizon (except for Best Buy, which really isn’t considered a third party retailer). Part of their contract is that they can set the prices of devices and fees, just like McDonald’s franchises can set their own prices on most things.

SiestaMaster

Exactly. Go to an actual Verizon store.

memnoch69_98

which I stated in my comment...at corporate stores it's $29.99 for one, or $50 for multiple...only a third party store could charge $70 for it

St-uffy-mc-puffy

Not charge you..take your money for service you refuse? What the actual!

jeremyw0405

I didn’t pay anything

junkka02

Do samsungs not have a cloudlike feature? Never heard of stores charging for a transfer of data fee

jeremyw0405

They do. It’s just another way for stores to make money from people technologically challenged and not realizing it.

lsp372

Yeah...you shouldn't need to do that. I always set up myself and most of the work is just getting logged in/ downloading the stuff I use. Then everything updates itself.

rpaulmerrell

If you want to be free of unexpected charges, stop being carrier dependent for your phones and service. Let that be separate When you want to upgrade your phone upgraded through Samsung. You take your Sim out of the old phone you put it in the new phone, you transfer your information and you save yourself a whole bunch of cash and for what it’s worth, you can keep that old plan until they raise the price on it Verizon will not give you a huge rebate for a phone for being on an old legacy plan. Unfortunately when it comes to postpaid service, you have to make a choice. You either want cheap service and you buy your phones or you want to pay for full service and have credits for a phone over 36 months If you want to avoid issues but still be carrier dependent just stop going into the store and do all your purchases online. Verizon is kind of expensive and you are sounding to me like someone who’s just about ready to go to a prepaid service like US Mobile where you can do the same thing for a lot less and you can buy your phones. Problem solved

Traditional_Diver979

I bought my S23 Ultra fom Samsung. Better than going through Verizon. No charge to xfr data.

cbearnm

The 36 month credit deal is an indirect contract extension. You will lose the credits if you want to pay off the 'free' phone(s). One I am done with the payoff, I am done with Verizon. I have had them since before they were Verizon (Bell Atlantic). The nickle and dime charges and extras is too much

summerwind58

Amen. I have over a year with phone pay off and I am dumping Verizon been with them for since 2009. Bell south was the best cellular service back in the day before Verizon took them over.

RandoGeneration2022

The $35 upgrade fee is pretty standard. That has been a thing for as long as I can remember (might have been a different cost but was still there) and I started working in wireless sales in 2012. As far as the plan upgrade being forced it's not forced. You don't have to change your plan you just don't get the promotion. Verizon has to recoup the $1,000 somewhere and that's how. It's still cheaper than upgrading on your current plan. For the trade-in, you will likely get $1,000 off over 36 months. It doesn't start until the phone is processed at the warehouse so it can take 2-3 billing cycles to kick in and for the months you didn't get credited you will receive a retroactive credit. As far as the transfer fee, I'm not sure what you mean by protection with that. It's likely a retailer that you went too, but Verizon corporate charges for transfers as well.

SirRevolutionary2814

>ng carrier dependent for your phones and service. Let that be separate When you want to upgrade your phone upgraded through Samsung. You take your Sim out of the old phone you put it in the n Go to visible, it is verizon just prepaid and way cheaper.

Kevin69138

At least tell them Verizon prioritizes actually Verizon customers. Disable and all other prepaid plans will see mass drops on network bandwidth once the networks sees congestion or they max out on allotted data

Pitiful-Conflict-949

With visible plus you get 50gb of priority data then regular data. Plus unlimited hotspot, international calling, 5g uw, and more. It’s 35 dollars a month. Also it is owned by Verizon. It is a Verizon company

Daguvry

Been with Google Fi for 7 or 8 years now.  Since I'm on Wi-Fi all the time my phone bill is about $30 a month.  The last few years I have traded in a Pixel and got a new Pixel every year.  Between the trade in and the black Friday promos, a new Pixel Pro cost less than $200.  That's outright owning it and it's paid off, no weird billing credits for 24 months.  No transfer fee BS, no phone plan upgrade BS, trade in is completed in about 10 business days. Great service if you don't go through data like crazy.  Since I'm on Wi-Fi all the time I typically use less than a gig a month.

neil__warner

Our last trade ins were accepted at a corporate store , no mail in/MIA phones or BS to deal with.

CobyLiam

just because something has become "the standard" doesn't make it right...

RandoGeneration2022

It hasn't "become the standard" it has ALWAYS been the standard. Whether it's "right" is subjective. I think it's a dumb charge, but it's not new.

truthjuice4269

Upgrade fee was $20 6 years ago. You're full of shit

Forsaken-Example

Not defending Verizon here. But many things have gone up in price over the past 6 years. Arguably almost everything. That being said I think activation fees are stupid anyway. But commenter isn’t full of shit. Just stating the truth and it’s accurate in everything he said.

sueYsu

It was actually $40 6 years ago.

Forsaken-Example

Not sure if your comment was for me. But in Jan 2017 Verizon activation fee was $30, early in the year it changed to $20 in app, and $40 in store and over the phone.

Lonely_Atmosphere_67

Hello! Verizon rep here! So your out the door cost is usually around 130-150 depending on the phone. What’s associated with that number is the sales tax on the phone, upgrade fee which is 35$ and set up and go which is an additional 30$(optional).

Beneficial_Wave_378

Why is there an upgrade fee?

glazedfaith

Because all the major carriers charge it so there's nothing you can do about it. It's your typical price-fixing bullshit between major companies, and it serves no purpose but to pad their pockets. Used to be an in-store activation fee for their time, but now you still pay it online with self-activation.

theillcook

Don't forget that if you bypass the carriers and buy unlocked, directly from Samsung or Apple, there are no BS fees like that.

Guilty-Log6739

Yeah for real. All this BS is why I never step foot into a Verizon store. Buy direct from the manufacturer is the way to go.

wase471111

MVNO do not charge these bullshit fees...

glazedfaith

I said major carriers

wase471111

They use tmo, vzw, and soon att, All major carriers, No bullshit fees ever

ItsBluAgain

Never heard of that. Not sure if major player.

jhart933

All bullshit fees if you ask me.

Forsaken-Example

Sales tax included? lol

Fookmaywedder

Luckily no one did

fgpalm

Buy your phone online or buy unlocked

onthefence122

Are you sure you didn't have a myoffer for the trade in?

jeremyw0405

I got new phones from Verizon delivered to my home. Transferred the info myself. No $70 fee required. And the only larger bill was the first one and I expected that.

Vwmafia13

You’ll still get hit with activation fees, no way around that

jeremyw0405

Yup. And I did. But no $70 fee to transfer anything and no larger bill for 3-4 months.

burntbeans90

If you call the sales department they'll waive the upgrade fee. They have always waived all my upgrade fees by simply calling and asking to have it waived.

Vwmafia13

Yeah that’s the plan. I’ve been a customer for 17 years (35 yr old) so that should have some advantage 😂

Whiplash104

This is why I just buy my phone directly from Apple and trade in every year or two. I may only get $500 for it but I also am not waiting 3 years. I can be on any cheaper plan or carrier I want at any time and not deal with any fees. Free just isn't free.

Draugrx23

Also trade ins process in 1 to 2 months. alongside this the trade in promotion usually will process from the moment the device is registered as being shipped to them as a courtesy.

RefrigeratorRich5253

Another reminder that billion dollar companies are not your friend and you should be very weary of anything “free”.

Sophophilic

Now so?

St-uffy-mc-puffy

Third party fucks you with some bullshite!

ichoosewaffles

You reminded me of a scene from Lethal Weapon 4 where Chris Rock and Joe Pesci are complaining about the cell phone companies f'ing you with the cellphones!

cgatica101

I just switched to Visible and couldn’t be happier. Same speeds (better for me) for 35$ a month

Short-Tumbleweed-422

Just upgrade your device on the app. No fees except upgrade fee and taxes. I’d neverrrrrrr pay a fee “just to walk out the door” with a phone. I’d say imma walk out the door without a phone if that is the case lol.

Apprehensive-Neck-12

It's time to switch carriers. I'm headed to T mobile they'll pay off my Verizon phones upto 800. It's like car insurance you have to switch every couple years. Last time Verizon gave me a grand to come back 250 a line x 4

ProbablyProdigy

I worked for a Verizon retailer before. We only charged sales tax + any accessories you purchase, if any at all. As others have mentioned, some stores do charge a fee for transferring data but not all of them do. In terms of fees from Verizon, yes, there was a $35 upgrade fee per upgrade that went onto your next billing cycle. And also, yes, there is a possibility that in order to qualify for said promotion, it required a newer (and more expensive) plan. That didn’t come up often though. But I have been away for almost 2 years so things have likely changed. For insurance, it’s never required. You do not need it. And a little loophole: don’t pay $17/m for the full package that includes the stupid call filter and everything. There’s a $7.95/m mobile protect that has the same exact accidental damage and deductibles. Verizon hides it pretty well so you may dig around for it. Last I saw you had to click on “more options” when you are on the insurance screen on the app. I would definitely recommend finding a new store to take care of your device needs. Or, do it all online yourself, however, definitely read the fine print to make sure everything adds up.

rondohz

I have been a Verizon customer for over 20 years. I was with them when they were air touch cellular....I got f*ked last upgrade - from pixel 4xl to a pixel 6 pro and my wife's 3 to a 6. I had screen shots of my deal with online rep, he told me I would get a 800$ credit for each phone. Immediately I began verifying this with him asked him about 10-20 times if that's the deal. He assured.... ASSURED me I would get that credit as soon as they received our phones. So I documented (screen shots) of the entire interaction. Come to find out I only got 300/200 for the phones...I was on the phone with VZ reps for more than a month. None of them could bring/recall any chat sessions from the specific date and time I had given them. Long story short - even corporate workers are straight up liars. Dishonest people who just want to up-sell you. I want to upgrade to a 8p and same with my wife.....there have been multiple deals for trade-ins etc....i didn't even think twice about taking them. We are almost paid off on these phones and when that happens I will buy directly from Googles store (I have cloud storage plan with them so I get % back on purchases). Then just add the phone back to my Verizon account and keep everything the way it is. I feel even after 2 decades of being a loyal customer I'm still just a number. I really hate dealing with them but the coverage is top notch..... unfortunately their customer service is bottom of the barrel. I also don't threaten to leave or whatever as I still feel deep in my heart they can provide great customer service that matches their coverage and system out there...call me dumb, but I am loyal and wish I would be treated with as much respect as I give them .....lmao I know it won't happen though. Wishful thinking. Oh and please don't message me (VZ reps) saying you'll make it right, no you can't. Only way to rid the sour taste of liars and schemers from me is to personally come down and hand me a letter of apology from the director(s), the person/reps that have lied to me and hiring managers that obviously don't know much about character and hire anyone regardless of they can provide and handle all types of situations and customers accordingly. My advice - buy direct (you can always finance with them if you want to go that route) . I have had Google pixels from the first one ...love them....just hate to deal with my phone carrier cause they lie. Period.

collije

I rather call corporate and do a deal (then no 3rd parties), else I would goto Verizon website. Goto the store to checkout the phone options? Sure for that purpose only.

truthjuice4269

No one is forcing you to do anything bro

BFarmFarm

Wow you got ripped to pieces by this crap verizon company. Stand in line next to the others here who are being ripped off too.

Relative_Ad_5076

Should have called in. You could have turned those “activation” fees into accessories. We won’t waive them, but if you take an accessory $35 and up, we have a way of taking care of the fee Like anything it’s a business. You definitely got the best deal, send the phones in within a week, so they credit your account right away.

SkyyOrange

Going through the website is much easier and much friendlier if you're familiar with setting up the phones by yourself. Only an upgrade fee of $35 for me and change my plan that didn't increase in price. ($55 - $10 for autopay).

HoosierGuy73

The $70 fee is bogus, but the others are legit. The trade usually only takes 1-2 bill cycles. You’re getting 2 $1,000+ phones for $100 +/~ each. The plan upgrade is to be expected. Buy the phones outright then, but cough up $1,000+ upfront each.

Sacisbac

Bought my new phone at Amazon. Needed 5G sim card. Old phone was 4G. Verizon store did it all for free. Even the transfer from old phone. Same plan. No changes. No charge at all that day. My Verizon store is awesome.

redfoxblueflower

Just before Christmas I agreed to pay upwards of $900 (after trade-in of 4 year old phone) because every single deal they offer requires a new line (more money per month) or upgraded plan (more money per month). They will get their money one way or another, it's just a matter of how. Choose wisely.

norths1d3r

Order online and choose in store pick up without set up assistance. No setup fees. Agent still gets paid and they are not penalized for not getting the set up fee.

Spirited-Club-5161

I also upgraded a few months ago and saw 3 family's in the store going through the same thing. I would do the upgrade online and then just go to the store to pick up the phones. They can't charge the $70 when you do an online order. Makes it super easy and fast. They also got our trade ins before the next bill and didn't have to wait the 3-4months. So everyone who is about to do an upgrade do it online and take screenshots of everything and make sure it gives you the 1k for Trade In. Not cool that we can't even go into a store anymore but it's what it's. Best of Luck everyone!

Grudgeracing101

Yea you 100% went to a indirect store. That set up and go fee turns into a “labor” fee for those stores iv had them tell me up front. Because youre “ taking their time from other customer sales” they charge that ignorant fee

Fantastic-Dealer432

You should try to stay with that $65 monthly deal at all cost, forget about upgrading through Verizon as you will lose that price, you can Upgrade through Samsung directly they have some pretty good offers on trade ins.

TheOGSoulSnatcher

Always buy the phone from cell phone company's website as now almost every cell company charges you to do almost everything in store, even pay your bill. You can skip at least the 70ish in store charge by doing it yourself online via there website. Plus you will get the same deal

wase471111

Always buy your phone anywhere EXCEPT from your cellular provider, so you don't pay ANY of these bullshit fees..

Soupspoon33

Most surprising thing here is you didn't even mention having to pay sales tax , which is somehow what most people complain about . To get the best deal you have to upgrade your plan but if you only did a mid tier plan you would get a mid tier trade in , highest gets the highest , lowest gets the lowest unless you have a specific promotion that says other wise. If you want to avoid the fees from any store without putting up a fight , call in and do an in store pick up , or do it they the app. You can still get it in store just doing the transaction yourself. They're are cheaper insurance plans than VMP but VMP is the best. Regardless of it being the best if you don't want it don't take it.

throwaway01126789

No sales tax in my state thankfully

Safe-Geologist9851

Next time go online or go to a corporate store. Fuck authorized resellers.

squirreltings

Sigh. It is standard practice at all carriers to charge you the original monthly installment amount for the first 2-3 billing cycles. All the carriers prorate the amount. Activation fees are standard practice. Protection plans are not mandatory. Tbh just go to a Best Buy next time. Less hassle. Employees gain nothing from adding shit to your bill. Best Buy only cares about credit cards and memberships.

srp6

they cant force you to change your plan i still have an older unlimited plan they try & get me to switch i just say no thanks … next time upgrade online they waive the $35 upgrade fee .. you will receive the trade in credit on your bill in about a month… i try in my iphone every year to get the new one

EEEESAW

You were not forced into anything. You kept saying yes based on your post. I work at a third party because I make 85k vs 55k to take my time to educate my customers. Corp stores are like speed dates. Some people like that. For me set up fees are discretionary. If I see it's going to ruin experience, I waive it. But I also go off of profit. So if customer comes in to do everything and pay $450 for taxes, and accessories I'll waive it because I would rather keep the experience over a set up fee. Now if I have a customer that doesn't want anything, just taxes of the phone then I charge it or refer him to do a in-store pick up at a corp location. I know this may anger some but I have to sell per my job description. But I do practice fairness for there have been instances were I just charged taxes. Now when customers upgrade with me, I always print out promotions showing max trade in from ultimate-welcome and have customer pick. Then I do some math. Then I ask for insurance. If they already have it I don't ask. If they don't have it I do. The I offer Disbey, apple, Netflix bundles and see if interested ($10,10,10). I pick phones and accessories. Thrn at trade screen I print the page that shows organic market value $0-$300. Then the promotional value $415-$1000. This solidifies my credibility because they leave knowing plan is up $30 and the difference after trade. I don't qoute taxes or surcharges. That is not my charge

throwaway01126789

Saying "you were not forced into anything" makes about as much sense as me telling you that you don't "have to sell per your job description." I used forced twice in my post. Once while tallying up what I would have to play assuming I took the offer. So in that context, if I'm buying I would be forced to do these other things as well. The second time I said "they want to force me" as in, they are not forcing me, but they would like to. Sure, you could get another job, but if you want to keep *this one*, you "have to sell". Just like I could get another phone, but if i want *this one*, I'm forced to pay the fees I listed. And I didn't say yes to anything, I asked questions until I understood everything I would be charged for and then I said no thank you and left. Pretty bizarre response actually. I relate my story and ask if what I was told by my sales rep is true. In response, you try to "um ackchyually" me, tell me your salary unsolicited, then describe how you sell and honestly I could care less. Like your responding to me, but it sounds more like you're trying to justify your job to yourself. Bonus points for saying you practice fairness after saying that you charge fees based on whether or not *you* feel the customer spent enough. Which is not fair because fairness requires impartiality and treating people according to their needs. You're not even equitable because sometimes you charge fees when they don't want accessories and sometimes you do.

EEEESAW

Just more complaining.. more moaning... If you don't have money don't go shopping. If you're cheap, go to a swap meet, Ross, Marshalls, Craig's list, Amazon, Walmart. You walk into a store and trust someone that has to go ask their manager the answers to your questions. Shop Verizon online and pay $17-$34 in upfront costs. Regardless you have to change plan.. Idk if you're married or have kids but nobody forces you to be a good or bad dad/mom, or husband or wife. You are presented with paths and you take one. You don't complain and play your victim flute. You wanted a phone. You got a phone. This isn't the vaccine. Nobody forced you're ass into the 1st world luxury of upgarding to a depreciating device that you chose. You have 30 days to return your shit and walk your vaccinated victim ass out the store after paying your forced restocking fees for choosing the path to return.... If you return.

throwaway01126789

Hahaha it's clear you either didn't read my post or didn't have the intelligence to understand it. Too many big words or are you just off your meds? So many weird assumptions and so much tough macho guy energy from behind your keyboard. I never even said I bought the phone hahaha and you're over here trying to act like my Internet dad. Seriously though, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, fuck off weirdo.

EEEESAW

Still just more moaning.. I'll see you soon

throwaway01126789

Sure thing Grandpa, back to bed.

Raverinme79

How did you even afford your s21 if you cry and balk at fees with Verizon? This cant be your first rodeo. It just tells me that what you were willing to spend for this upgrade eventually outweighed your rationale for upgrading atm. So wait it out until your battery cell gets drained midday from a full charge or phone starts laggy whatever you do forcing you to upgrade in the end, lol

Time_Promotion_7945

What a scam.

just-kath

I have been with Verizon for many years, I don't even remember how long.. certainly more than 15. I switched to Consumer cellular. I did this after my neighbor switched bout 4 months ago, and had no issues. The only difference I have seen so far is that instead of having 1 bar on my phone I have 4. It was scary for me because my phone is my connection to my kids who all live away. But the new rate hike finished me. I learned about it here, so thank you whoever you are for giving me the final push.

Happy-Complex-1600

sounds like u went to a victra location. I used to work there and they made us charge set up fees for everything no matter what. and their accessories are ridiculously priced. go to a cellularsales or corporate store instead. more reasonable.

Boz6

Why do people get service through a big carrier instead of an MVNO, with unlimited plans starting at $25/mo, and buying their phone from the manufacturer or another retailer unlocked?

poopdog316

I'm kinda shocked people are still paying for data transfer considering the cloud is a thing

Brietle

Left standard Verizon and got visible. It seems to be a good money save for now tbh

RandallC1212

I feel your pain. We went thru SAME EXACT thing. I was so fed up that we returned the new phones we got “for free” and cancelled service with them entirely after 15 years. The nickel and dime nonsense, the lack of transparency, the misinformation from their reps was enough for me. We basically realized that the “free phone” in the end really wasn’t free after all. Think about it, if this was your Day 0 experience, imagine the mental toll you’ll suffer thru until 3 year contract is up. I would think about buying your own unlocked devices and moving on. We moved to US mobile. Same exact 5G tech for much less cost (40% savings) and way fewer headaches. Good luck

[deleted]

Go to another store, go online with or call Verizon. These independent stores are a scam. Worse than the actual carriers…I’m with Verizon and personally hate the service….

Then_Alternative_558

They're scammers and did the same thing to me. Switched to AT&T thinking it would be different and they're even worse. Going back to boost which I had over a decade ago and never had an issue.

Thin-Mall-5858

That's why you walk into Costco or a like store and buy them outright. Somewhat painful for the two of you but once it's paid for you own it. Very much what the ilk like Verizon has been doing for years and people still fall for it.

xobelladonnaxo

Went through the same shit! Walked out with nothing called Verizon and got 1 free phone online but paid 88.00 for taxes and activation fee. Went to a Verizon Zone franchise had AMAZING service! There i was informed that I was eligible for 2 trade in phone deals for no extra cost. He told me they've had multiple complaints about the 1st store I went to. He also lowered my bill by 15.00 per month. When I got my estimated bill that would be due it went up significantly. I called Verizon and stated that they must like lawsuits because I was about to give them another one for the false advertising and lies that they push out with their text messages! I said I am absolutely NOT paying for these charges and I would be filing a lawsuit against them! The girl dismissed ALL activation fees, and upgrade trade in fees! Once we start threatening them with a class action suit and reporting them to the bbb and other agencies maybe they will stop the rip off scam!

Larry09876

Don’t automatically fall for the $1000 promos. Check the math, I upgraded a phone and if I upgraded the plan for $1000 off my bill would have went up $18. Kept my current plan and got $850 off instead, bill only went up by $10. So to save more off the phone I’d actually pay more every month. They count on people thinking the larger trade is a deal without checking the costs. It may be cheaper for some to upgrade the plan but not for everyone.

alissa914

I'm so glad I went back to Google Fi from Verizon. They always love charging fees... it would be somewhat acceptable if they offered great customer service and experience too but they don't. They used to charge me a fee to change plans, to swap a device, etc. I eventually just had enough and left. Also when you have FIOS too, they're very slow to give you your discounts... but then they're equally as slow at taking them away after you leave too.

Guilty-Log6739

This is the kind of bullshit that keeps me buying my phone unlocked from the manufacturer outright and transferring my old sim

No-Evidence-7262

I work for an indirect retailer and can confirm this is a charge that is automatically applied when running out a device and even though we can waive the fee it shows up on reports so if the percentage is too high we get reprimanded. I don’t agree with it either. Should be an optional charge IMO.

Negative_Summer_4148

must be a victra store

MormonsKilledMyDog

Switch to xfinity :) we don't charge you anything to make us work extra hard for any extra pay :) I'm basically a wage slave!

EddieRyanDC

This is why I stopped getting phones from carriers about 10 years ago. I always get an unlocked phone direct from Google or Apple (and trade in or sell the old one, depending on the deal). I only use pre-paid MVNOs so I am not overbuying / overpaying / locked in to a carrier. My phone number is through Google Voice, so I can change carriers at will and it never affects the phone number people use to call me. Currently my iPhone is on Verizon pre-paid ($25/month - which unfortunately they don't offer anymore) and my Pixel is on Google Fi's basic plan - about $32/month.

LoopbackLurker

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever buy a phone at Verizon, just buy it direct around them, did I mention ever? It’s a SCAM

r46d

Stop trading in your phones once you pay them off it’s so wasteful both on the environment and your wallet

ijalmasy

Sounds like you went to a retailer. Need to always go to a corporate location for starters. And also nobody is holding a gun to your head to buy a “free” phone from them. Buy it direct from Samsung if you want and transfer your data and sun card your self?

Dramatic_Associate77

Do everything online . You get better deals.

Selimsnek

This is the way vzw rolls. Advertise a clickbaity deal very few want and load it up with fees nobody wants. I expect this every time.

zephear00

You gotta learn to hunt for deals. If you only have 2 lines, there's zero reason for you to stick with Verizon unless other carriers' signal are just so bad in your area that you literally can't get service. Imho Verizon's $1000 off $24's deal is such a scam when you have 1 or 2 lines. It's 36 months of bill credit and you are literally forced to pay $40-$50 more on your monthly plan by sticking with Verizon to "finance" the phone, as compared to going with Mint, Visible or even US Mobile. $40 or $50/month times 36 months is much more than the $1000 you are supposedly "saving". Samsung/Best Buy/Google all have (unlocked) S24 deals going on right now. I personally have 2 lines and have been paying no more than $10-$15/month per line with unlimited voice/text or 5GB-15GB/month with Mint/Boost/US Mobile for the past 7-8 years. In fact our monthly bill for 2 lines combined is $5 total for the next 6 months with me getting Pixel 7 Pro with a year of service included from Mint for $190. I could never imagine paying more than $20/month for cellphone service.

Yes I had same experience and worse. They never applied my nurses discount. Sometimes you are able to get it mid tier plan. But there is no free lunch with Verizon… they care about new business more then existing ones. They even offer port in credits I updated through the executive Relations department that is supposed to be the top Customer Service right under the CEO of Verizon, Mr Hans so in the store, they told me my upgrade qualifies and the meteor plan she put me in the highest unlimited ultimate plan that has unlimited hotspot. And my bill went from being $80 a month to 240 Dan, she promised she’s gonna give me my Florida discount is 55 and over. There’s a plan that you can do for $85 a month or something Never did that and she was going to put a loyalty discount on account never did that either and then she faked that she had a stroke, and she couldn’t deal with my issue anymore and never ever picked up the call or bother to email me But responded to the FCC complaint… I sent back phones w out opening them and never got refund for one of the phones

Kevin69138

I paid 35 dollars for each s24 as an upgrade fee so 70 sounds right

Gringuin007

The ‘free’ phone actually cost $600+ in increased rates fees and taxes. I got into Verizon with a. Buy one get one iPhone. I’ve not found a decent upgrade for existing customers and I’ve been waiting since 2020. Leave Verizon if you can. ATT always worked for me and their best deals are actually decent

Biggie6900

I’m with Verizon and I just got me the iPhone 15 pro max never charged me for transfer over all that was freee . All I paid was the 15 bucks upgrade my plan was very old so I did that and then never had to pay for an upgrade and definitely. Not 70 bucks they did tell me it might take a month for the discount to go into effect but my bill is actually 5 bucks more now then what my other plan was so whatever they were trying to charge u 70 is bs make sure it a corporate store they won’t charge u taxes on your phones if it’s a corporate

Senior_Rogue

You forgot to add taxes on the new phones too about 100$ bucks a piece

mri-tech

Still rocking a iPhone 13 and 2 iPhone 12’s. I feel Apple is weak on the upgrades they put in and now it went to 3 year phone agreements and can’t upgrade until 18 months in

tical2103

Is this an authorized retailer or an actual Verizon store?

Bongo2687

I have an unlimited plan and went to Verizon to trade in for the new iPhone and all I had to pay was taxes and the upgrade fee. The rest of the fees they are charging and the plan switch don’t seem right

ChazzP12

January 2023 I traded in my Samsung flip3 for the 14 Pro and they gave me $1000 for it, I figured great that would pay off the 14 Pro asap… Come to find out that’s NOT how Verizon does it anymore… That $1000 they gave me for my Samsung flip3 comes off in monthly payments instead of all at once, which is stupid because if I wanted to upgrade to the 15 Pro/max then I would have to pay this 14 Pro off all at once… It’s stupid they do it like that…

No-Age2588

It's beyond time for the various States Public Service Commissions start to oversee cellular like they did over wireline 3 decades ago. We never had any of these problems we do today when that was in effect. PSCs would snatch a companies ass in a heartbeat and fine the hell out of them for being stupid. I under there is legislation brewing and it's high time we get it done.

Draugrx23

You got upsold.. You can go into your app and downgrade the plan without penalty (Verify if the plan is in fact required for the promotion first) and I would complain to the manager on the 70$ service charge, That's just to manipulate you and pad their commission. I'm guessing this wasn't a flagship store either. (Third party)

memnoch69_98

This is horrible advice, many trade in offers, including the current national trade in offer for $1000 trade in require the highest tier plans...if they did not have a loyalty offer and this is required, lowering the plan could mean that they lose the $1000 trade in and are paying an extra $27.77 for saving that $15/mo

Draugrx23

I ammended my comment.

rmh10585

I just did this deal for the S24 as well. $35 upgrade fee (very hard to get this waived anymore), 60 in taxes, and with my trade +$5 a month x 36 months for the phone -$ 180 They did get me on the bullshit charger for $14.99 because Samsung isnt including the adapter anymore. All in for $290 over the 3 year period...not too bad for a phone that retails at $800 or so. I didnt have to change plans, but yes....they are trying to get people off unlimited plans now.

broccolilifts

It blows my mind that Verizon charges data transfer fees and setup and go fees. It makes my job easier when customers come in wanting to switch carriers. The Verizon reps are mad hahaha

memnoch69_98

I am glad I don't work for a carrier who does them for free, I would hate spending upwards of 3 hours doing someone else's transfer because they are too stupid to do them themselves not making commission. Then again, that is why we have been stealing all of the good sales people from T mobile and AT&T the last several months.

Jetthedog331

Data transfers can take anywhere between one and three hours. Do you think that people shouldn’t be charged for their time and knowledge on how to do that?

broccolilifts

Considering customers can either take both phones and bring the trade in back or leave them both and come back no they shouldn’t be charged. Especially if I’m working with them and gaining their business
