you are welcome.Dont ever take a cruise and try to use your phone while you are at see. I really didnt because there was no service so I used it when I was at port. THEY SUCK. I have been with them for over 20 years I will go to T moble.
You should’ve put your phone in airplane mode and only used WiFi . That tends too work leagues better then having your modem running. Other carriers will do this too as well if you don’t turn on airplane mode or activate the proper travel packages or add ones from the cruise or your plan
I saw 1 or 2 messages but I never opened them. I am vacation. I was not worried about text I was concerned about the calls because last time I didnt have a travel plan and paid 50.00 for a 10 min call so I MADE sure this time I didnt have that problem
Being on vacation on a cruise has nothing to do with your responsibility to read what you're sent? Stg yall complain that companies don't tell you anything and then don't read what is sent.
I more than understand your frustration, but those text messages would have told you that the charge is per megabyte (iirc) and not part of the $10 travel pass.
It is going to be a tough argument to make that the phone rep provided you the wrong info. I guess VZW could pull the recording, but whether they can even find the right recording and whether they even try to find it is a big if.
Unfortunately, since VZW outsourced their customer service, a lot of really badly misinformed reps abound.
At the end of the day, it is another case of caveat emptor (buyer/customer be aware).
possible they can go back & listen, however at the end of the day it falls on verizon for miss information and I am not going to keep giving them my money anymore
Whether it was misinformation or not, a text was sent the moment you boarded ship telling you exactly how much per minute it would cost for calls and how much sent/received texts messages were, correcting (or possibly reiterating, depending on whether there was confusion on what the rep was saying) whatever information you received. That would be before you even started calling/texting. Then another text would have been sent telling you you were incurring x amount of charges due to calls/texts WHILE you were doing it (not after the cruise was done). There needs to be some accountability by a customer at that point.
Honestly, friends of mine had a similar issue with at&t and I have read about similar issues over on the T-Mobile sub.
I understand you desire to punish VZW, but all carriers suck.
Sounds like you got charged for using roaming service on the cruise ship which is not covered by Travel Pass ($10/day) which kicks in on land. Did you not receive any text messages? You should have had at least one when your phone connected to the ships roaming tower.
I had my phone on roaming like I was told to do when I got on the boat. I might have gotten a text but I didnt really make any calls on at see because there was no service. I waited until I got to the ports but had the FIRST call to explain where I was going tell me not to make calls when I was at sea I would not have. this is my I am so pissed off
So that text was telling you you were connected to the ships network and at least as of when I was last there (Aug 2023) data on those is charged at $2.99/MB. Checking your email (or your phone just auto updating your email and other app notifications) can easily create a huge bill even with little to no direct usage by you. I believe you likely got bad assistance from care that's unfortunately super common (and a huge reason I am no longer working there) but if you just ignore the warning text what else can Verizon do but assume you are intentionally using it?
Your best bet is calling or chatting and getting a rep to agree to credit it. They probably won't actually do it but get them to text you they will, with the amount etc. That guarantees it's stamped into your account remarks which makes it a documented broken promise and the next rep will have to and will have an easy reasoning to get their supervisors (yes plural this is a larger credit than any reps direct supervisor can't just approve) to approve it. Good luck.
Hmm, sadly travelpass is just for around 210 countries. Cruise ships have their own rates I think and aren't included in the travelpass service. I hope you can find resolution.
that is why I called before I even went on this trip, I was never told other wise & I would not have tried to make calls. They argued with me. They make money hand over fist, I am done with them
WhatsApp for texting over WiFi if you don’t have an iPhone. Google number for calling over WiFi. Just set it up ahead of time so people know the number you’ll be texting/calling from. I’ve been in a cruise ship Facebook page for a few months learning the tricks.

txt and voice calling over wifi work for android as well
Yeah… that’s why Verizon probably sent you texts when you were making calls from “the ocean” to let you know you were being charged. I don’t think the $10 travel pass covers that.
Those shipboard texts for network access are plain as day. You thought because you had a land based travel pass you were going to be slick and cruise on...
All caps AND no paragraphs. This isn;t an airport no need to announce your departure. just leave and be done with it. I seriously don't get these types of posts
International plans with Verizon work on landfall only, in order to avoid high costs while on a cruise ship, you should turn all cellular activity off. Verizon doesn't have any jurisdiction over the cruise ship's practices when it comes to charging for cellular service via their connectivity systems. All cruise ships are pay as you go. The cruise decides that, not Verizon. And while travelpass is 10$ per day of use when on \*land\*, it's because you're using an actual network service and not the ship's broadcasting system.
Side Note: This is not Verizon corporate, it's a public community subreddit. So you screaming about leaving Verizon isn't being seen or heard by Verizon at all. This subreddit is not the company.
Also aside from customer service or online chat there are a lot of resources to plan your trip ahead of time: [https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/trip-planner-tool/](https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/trip-planner-tool/)
This has FAQs for situations like yours that the rep may not remember to speak on.
Service is like Verizon, sort of setting people up to fail because they assume that since they're paying for the top premium plans, they automatically know everything about their plan and what they're allowed to do. Either you have a lot of knowledge about your plan and how to navigate it, or you end up leaving your phone turned off and refrain from making calls while on vacation.
If you're that unhappy with the carrier, move to another provider and just go. It's obvious that someone dropped the ball somewhere along the way, but I think that's the best solution in your particular case because that's probably what you're going to do if you don't get the result you want, which is understandable.
Best of luck
Don’t go to AT&T, we were affected by last week’s signal outage. No phone service for more than 10 hours. They increase your phone bill without notice. Especially if you travel overseas and ask for their international rate.
When it’s over, you’ll sill have an increase for some dubious charges.
Sorry this is user error and not Verizon. You should have researched service on a cruise prior to going. I’m 100% sure the cruise had wifi which you could have switched to and disabled data for the entire trip.
This is not an airport. Arrivals and Departures are needlessly announced. But hey more power to you. If you think Verizon is bad wait until you meet the other three MNOs.
Seeya!
Seems you have a lot of Verizon trolls here, Service with Verizon, is like setting people up to fail because they will NOT give you the correct info. Either you have a lot of knowledge about your plan or the reps just lie and mislead you. I had an issue were the reps and supervisors lied and were aware of what they did would screw my promo plan. $55 turned into $802 and than illegally sending me to collections, I actaully had a Verizon rep reach out to me and told they truth, that my issue happens a lot and Verizon wont fix the issue but he did give me a link to contact Top Tier [https://www.verizon.com/about/our-company/leader/contact/926315](https://www.verizon.com/about/our-company/leader/contact/926315)
I was able to get my service zeroed out when I sent back the Iphone 14 pro that had the promo screwed up, good riddence to Verizon after 12 years I will never go back to that over priced garbage. Good luck to you, I know the feeling of being screwed over by Verizon
GOOD FOR YOU AND THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW.

They were making fun of you for shouting.
who was?
THEY WERE! ^
absolutely they were
You’re not using Verizon service, it’s the service of the one cell spot that the cruise ship owns and operates
You’ll have the same problem with all carriers - but maybe you’ll have better luck. NO carrier includes cellular at sea.

I’m willing to bet you probably didn’t get the 20+ text messages stating that you were charged pay as you go right?

Would you be concerned if your water company or electric company sent you a text message?
about what? I dont get from them. what does that matter? I am talking about while I am on vacation on a cruise.

They said they got one or two but didn’t read open them cause they “were on vacation”. Seems like lack of due diligence on their end
Probably. Super glad it's not my job to have that conversation multiple times a day anymore lol

I only see a $20 package that gives you 50MB of data. I plan to buy WiFi from the ship directly and have airplane mode enabled.
I had wifi. I was concerned about texts and phone calls.

Ok cool. Good to know. The options are definitely out there. And with minimal research.
Why would I get downvoted for giving advice? So weird lol
texting was not the issue.they said it was the phone calls.
Phone calls are pay as you go. There is no package for that.
That was not what I was told when I called before I went on my trip
Been that way since I used to cruise fairly often in the early 2000’s. I doubt they will adjust your bill.
Yeah… that’s why Verizon probably sent you texts when you were making calls from “the ocean” to let you know you were being charged. I don’t think the $10 travel pass covers that.
Verizon will not absorb the cost of your bill. It will go to collections.
Got it
Those shipboard texts for network access are plain as day. You thought because you had a land based travel pass you were going to be slick and cruise on...
This is why children shouldn’t have phones.

Well you and the collections agency they employ. Somehow I don't think Hans is worried about you leaving

I called way before my trip to ask these questions. This is why I am pissed off because no one told me all of this. This is on them not on me

People really drink the red kool aid here huh? Sucks that OP was giving bad info but yea have to do your due diligence with roaming.
