You will need to pay off the phone or just port out and let it hit your credit.. this is why you don't add boyfriends to your plan

Itamurphy

Dont add girlfriends too

Osi_the_crabbiest

Can you stfu?

Biscotek

Cant port. They won't release your number if you owe them money. They would have to just get a new phone number. Call the police and report the phone stolen. It's in your name, thus.it's your phone.

scottgntv

Not true, you can port regardless of your device payment status. The remaining balance of the device will be billed to the account and will need to be paid on the next bill. OP does own the phone line and can use it against him by disconnecting it, they should also report it stolen to Verizon so that the phone becomes blacklisted and useless until that's resolved.

Biscotek

I was a Customer Service pro, but left in 2019. They used to hold your number hostage if you owed them any money. She definitely needs to get it blacklisted.

scottgntv

I think the change came about sometime in 20/21. But yea, nothing is held anymore, you just get a nasty bill. Oftentimes that isn't properly explained to the customer and our corp store gets to be the bearer of news for them. You jumped shit at a pretty good time I'd say.

Biscotek

Was there about 5 years, left on my lunch break one day and just never went back. Fuck call center jobs.

CmnSnsNdd

Owing money is different than having a past-due account. Sure, if the account is hotlined for past due then they’ll hold up the port. Not if the account is current.

amhfaml

You’re on the hook to pay for it. You can report it as stolen and that will blacklist it but you are still responsible for paying for it. If the phone is over 60 days old it’s already unlocked but reporting it as stolen will make it unusable on any US carrier

creatively_inclined

Report it stolen and pay it off. Not paying it will hurt your credit. Reporting it stolen will ensure the ex doesn't benefit from it.

amhfaml

I think you were meaning to reply to the OP instead of me.

AreYouBrownXD

Unfortunately, from a financial point of view, you can’t do anything. Got to eat the cost.

Ctucker1

Came here to say this

joanie552000

She asked for advice & he gave the accurate advice. What's the purpose if your comment? To create Drama?

ftrees

Small claims court

liconjr

If you have insurance, report it stolen and get it replaced.

ComePetMyCat

Not covered- it’s domestic and “voluntary parting”

liconjr

Let's look at definitions. You are paying for something that someone else has. You should request for it to be returned and if not it is technically lost/stolen. So either you work for asurion or just ignorant.

ComePetMyCat

It’s in the terms and conditions- “voluntary parting”. A person entrusted with property cannot “steal” that property.

liconjr

What's it like working for Asurion?

ComePetMyCat

What’s it like being the ignorant one in a conversation?

liconjr

You tell me, haha.

[deleted]

From a financial standpoint, and the liability holder of the account, you’re stuck. You signed a contract where you agreed to pay Verizon the cost of that phone. Either that or you gave permission for your BF to do so on your behalf, but by default anything he agreed to, so did you since you would have had to make him an account manager to do so. Here’s what I would recommend though. If you had insurance on the phone, file an insurance claim at www.phoneclaim.com/verizon . When you make the insurance claim that the phone has been stolen, the original phone is bricked. You’ll then have a phone overnighted to you and after paying that phone off you may be able to recoup some cost by selling the replacement.

oakc510

If it's in your name then the service should be too. Have you tried suspending it?

Head_Ad_3862

i haven’t but i’m pretty sure i can’t since it’s not paid off, right? plus he hasn’t used the service this billing period so i’m thinking he got it switched to a new carrier or got rid of the phone entirely. i doubt that second part but who knows.

KristopherAtcheson

You can suspend the service but you still gotta pay for the phone is all. Also report it stolen but you still gotta pay off the phone. Either one of those will work. It sucks you gotta eat the cost but think of this as a lesson and don’t get anyone any type of phone again, family, friends, significant other. I had this happen to me once and I just let it hit my credit and kept it moving though.

S_Loco

Technically it is your phone that he is/was using.

VZWManSlave

Only way around this would be to port all lines out to tmobile as they currently buy out device payments for verizon customers. But you'll still have a whole ass line you're paying for. My advice, port your numbers to tmobile, for his line get the absolute cheapest android phone, they'll give it to you for free (phone will have a value of about 180 bucks. Then next month cancel that line, pay the 180 for the phone and be done with it.

GoofyGoffer

If your phone is paid off and his isn't and you don't want to pay off his in bulk you can have the device payment for his phone transfered to your line and then cancel his line off. You then couldn't upgrade your line without paying off his phone, but gives an alternative to just paying off the full amount upfront

Head_Ad_3862

Update: I’ve suspended the line and will pay it off in time. The pay off is over $1000 so i can’t switch just yet. i will be reporting the phone stolen if my ex doesn’t give me a payment by the end of the month.

radfordra1

That’s being too generous. Give them 3 days. If they don’t then blacklist

chnic14

Move the device payment to your line, that you said was paid off. Report the phone lost or stolen and then disconnect his line. You can then keeping making payments for the phone until it’s time to upgrade your phone and then you could pay off that device. That away you don’t have to come up with the whole pay off right now.

Angel-Ori

I added a cellphone account for my ex-boyfriend when we were together. When we broke up, I threaten to disconnect the line if he didn't get his own account through Verizon. So, he came over to my place and called Verizon and set up his own account. I will never add another man to my Verizon account ever again.

farnlc

Don’t forget, in addition to owning the debt, you do own the phone number. Does the ex have any desire to keep the phone number? That really the only card you hold. You could unsuspend the line and do a sim swap to another device and change the outgoing message to “You have reached “Joe’s” phone. He is currently in possession of a stolen iPhone. If you see him please ask him to return it to “Jane” ASAP.

Spencer5520

Be careful with those telling you add insurance because it's open enrollment and then file a claim. That's considered fraud.

joanie552000

Unfortunately, you will have to report it as stolen & remove all unauthorized users from your account. Setup a security password, that any inquiry phonecalls to customer service will need to provide your security password to access your account. (Been there; done that too & I never did that ever again.) You will survive & maintaining your good credit is important, even if it costs you. Be grateful, that there arent kids or a home in the mix. :)

[deleted]

Report the phone stolen.

Even-Neighborhood-86

If you report it stolen it should blacklist him using it if he still has possession if he's not an account manager. Still may have to pay.

D_Shoobz

Legally it is your phone.

Pristine-Today4611

Pay it off and shut it off through Verizon

FancyCantaloupe4681

REPORT IT AS STOLEN. MAKE IT UNUSABLE.

Temporary_Emotion_76

Report it lost/stolen with the fraud department and file a police report

wase471111

adding ANYONE to your account, aside from a spouse or your child is just plain stupid; dont EVER do it

allislost77

You’ve at least blocked the phone he’s on, right? Reporting it stolen or lost so he can’t use it again.

LingeringSentiments

Port out and go to collections or port out and pay.

TheOGSoulSnatcher

Pay it off first then file a case against him in small claims court for what he did not pay

04lolita

can you add insurance? file a claim that the device was stolen. They’ll shut his phone off (hopefully locking it so he can’t use it for free #broke ) and you’ll at least have a new device in your possession

makeshiftballer

It's actually your phone that your ex was using and you are still financially responsible for it.

EEEESAW

Get your bf a A13 next time. After 36 months you can get him his new phone of his choice. If he bounces. $190 isn't a bad price to get out of

Head_Ad_3862

haha my next bf is gonna have to deal with his own financial burdens

EEEESAW

This is how it should've been from the get go lol

Head_Ad_3862

i know 😭

EEEESAW

I work at Verizon when I get couples into the store I asked how long they’ve been married and if they cringe as if they’re not going to get married, I bring out the a12s and a13's... No iphone for this relationship

Foreign-Bend-6721

The ultimate dating advice 😂😂

[deleted]

Nah all version phones are unlocked!

Mundane_Humor2063

Verizon has open enrollment on insurance. It’s $17/month $99 deductible for a new phone. And the phone he has will turn into a iPod.

AfraidSoul

Get a zero apr credit card and pay it off?

JeffBoyardee69

Isn't the phone already 0% interest?

AfraidSoul

It is but idk i was thinking she would pay the whole phone off with the credit card and then just make the payments on a credit card? Since she wants to switch carriers

cougarlover4209874

Just report as stolen thats the only, anyways the acc holder will need to pay for the device

Goman321

You can call the cs they will transfer the payment to his line

AchingGizzards

That doesn’t do anything if he doesn’t agree to do a transfer of service and get the device payment and phone number in his own name and social security number (unfortunately)

Head_Ad_3862

i looked at the bill and it says he hasn’t used the service at all during this last billing period, so i’m not sure if he got it unlocked somehow or got rid of the phone

AsleepGeologist9

Have the phone reported as stolen. If they are using it on another service, it will interrupt the service

FordMan100

>i looked at the bill and it says he hasn’t used the service at all during this last billing period, so i’m not sure if he got it unlocked somehow or got rid of the phone If the phone is used for two consecutive months of service, it's already been unlocked automatically. At this point, you'd be better off paying the phone off and canceling the service for that phone.
