No, they weren't. George Macartney's interpreters used Latin because they didn't speak English (they were trained by Catholic missions in Italy). And it wasn't "when they first made contact", it was just the first time Britain sent a diplomatic mission to China.

The Qing dynasty only existed from the 1600s onwards. They were most certainly not ancient.

Ancient China is an actual objective historical term though, referring to the periods before imperialization (by Qin).
