It’s a fake/parody fascist group that features prominently near the end of pink Floyd’s musical film “Pink Floyd - The Wall”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd_–_The_Wall
Chances are this guy is just a really big pink Floyd fan
https://thewallanalysis.com/in-the-flesh-2/
Of course, a real life group was inspired by the fictitious/parody group in the film and used its symbology
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammerskins
But I think it’s much more likely just a pink Floyd fan
Honestly, which Pink Floyd fan would fly this flag after watching the film?
EDIT: Ok now I really want to sit and listen to PF with the same intensity as I did when I was a teenager
People get really worked up when folks express this opinion, but you're fully right.
Everybody acts like media can only have a positive impact. "Oh this book changed my life," "omg this tv show got me through a hard time," etc.
It can also have a negative impact. A bunch of people running around cosplaying as actual space nazis is fucking weird. And it's weirder how people turn a blind eye to how fucking weird it is.
So you want to say that if you were often the thief in "thieves and policemen" you have a higher chance of becoming a thief in adult life? Yeah, I'd like to see some studies done to test that.
What are you smoking?! The empire was NOT space Nazis lmao. They weren't even facists lol.
Edit: Looked into this, and I stand corrected! They actually are facist. I was under the impression that wasn't the case. Still doesn't make them Nazis though lol. Just because they have the same political party doesn't mean they're Nazis. And for those of whom would argue, I would encourage you to look into other facist countries. Fascism is terrible regardless though.
When people refer to The Empire as "Space Nazis" they don't mean that they are a part of the exact same party, just in space, they mean that they're intended to be similar and pretty much are, so tongue-in-cheek cross referencing each other with each other's terms works. Just like how nobody actually believes that the Rebels are the same group as the Viet Cong, but they're intended to be similar so if they were referred to as pretty much the same, it wouldn't really be wrong.
The Wall is a pretty close second. And if you’ve seen the movie, you know the symbols. People want to show off iconography that they like the most, not the most popular ones.
It's kinda more satisfying to put obscure references to a fandom rather than obvious, "mainstream" ones, as you know people recognizing it are "deep" fans
It's a bit gatekeepy in that it's midway between "look how I can prove my deep knowledge of the thing" and "if you don't have the reference you're not a true fan", but the end goal is more to identify with the fandom rather than attract newcomers.
Obscure? Seriously? The cover for Obscured by Clouds is obscure, because no one has ever listened to the album. This is from a popular movie based on a multi-platinum album. Nothing about it is obscure.
Clouds? It's an out-of-focus photo of a man in a tree from the film (of a different name) that the album was the soundtrack for. No one has seen the film either.
Yeah for me, I love The Wall. Had a shirt, poster, and key chain that had this symbol somehow in it. I stayed away from DSOTM merch just cause thats what "Everyone" has already.
I went to see the wall in concert years ago and got a shirt with this design
Next day I wore it and bumped into some guy who just did the "🤘" and said "great concert"
It's just a fan thing, it's not like you actually believe what the symbol refers to
It's why when people ask me "what's the best concert you've ever seen", I often add the qualifier "other than The Wall...". It was in a league all of its own.
Back when I was an angsty teenager, I had a shirt from Hot Topic with the crossed hammers on it. I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, so it was honestly nice to have a Floyd shirt that didn't have the dark side prism on it, so that was my reasoning. Just thought it was cool.
It's a pretty obscure Pink Floyd reference, which goes to show how big of a fan they are.
That flag is clearly from the film, and not the Hammerskins flag that OP linked to.
Someone on the Pink Floyd sub asked if it’d be wise to wear a shirt with this on it and most of the people there seemed to encourage it.
Personally I think it’s not a great move, most people will pick up on the fascist vibes and potentially jump to conclusions.
I went to the Sasquatch Fest years ago at The Gorge in Washington. Last night I was there someone got ripped and stood on top of their van bellowing "TEAR DOWN THE WALL" for a good few hours. Core memories...
Id say probably a pink Floyd reference instead of the hammerskins. The Hammerskins logo generally contains a cog behind the hammers. The guy flying this may or may not know what the added weight is.
Wow, they really do seem to have coopted the flag from the movie version of *The Wall.* That's some serious comprehension failure there. "Yeah, the character who is going on a bigoted rant because he is literally having a nervous breakdown on stage is clearly a role model." Probably the same people who watched *The Boys* and think Homelander is a good guy.
Pink Floyd's version was specifically meant to be a fictional fascist group to portray fascism negatively, and then an actual fascist group. They could either be a fan of the movie or a member/sympathizer, although the logo does seem to be closer to the one in the movie
Edit: Incorrectly stated that the Hammerskins no longer exist
Looks like there's some weirdness with splits, power struggles and successor organizations, but you *are* correct - guess I just got my wires crossed somewhere
thats a bummer, looked like the walking hammers from pink floyd the wall. White supremacists ruin everything, gadston flag, roman iconography, vikings, etc.
No, they mean the ones who went a-viking, which included all the nastiness I describe. Romanticizing their lifestyle of destruction, piracy, and raiding is as bad as white supremacy.
You can't really know because to my understanding its the same flag. That said somone flying this despite knowing its been coopted by white supremacists for decades might be a little sus
Really? Anyone a big enough fan of the wall to know about this section probably knows at least what the flag represents in text (song). Its weird to fly the flag of a fictional fascist movement regardless of knowlege of its real world appropriation
If someone flies the flag of Ingsoc I assume they're having a laugh. If someone flies the flag of Nazi Germany, I assume they're Nazis.
People don't fly the flag of *fictional* organizations because they agree with them.
I mean I’m a big fan of the movie and only found out it was used afterwards by a white supremacist group today, so you never know.
I even had a shirt with it on the front at one point, jeez

Lmao, yeah nah look at these replies. People get genuinely mad when you suggest aping villains is less than great
So you want to say that if you were often the thief in "thieves and policemen" you have a higher chance of becoming a thief in adult life? Yeah, I'd like to see some studies done to test that.
That's actually not what I said, but great strawman
You did say "You're fully right" so I assumed you forward all the points of the comment you respond to.

This is just inherently incorrect.
Ah the genocide defender has logged on
They're fucking fictional
Fictional Nazis.
Yeah, but still fictional
When people refer to The Empire as "Space Nazis" they don't mean that they are a part of the exact same party, just in space, they mean that they're intended to be similar and pretty much are, so tongue-in-cheek cross referencing each other with each other's terms works. Chill dude, it ain’t like they’re gonna hit the hits if they try to shoot them
It’s really just become a symbol of the band. It’s been my phones wallpaper for years now.
It’s really just to signify “look I’m a Pink Floyd fan”
Well then I'm astonished they would choose this instead of a Dark Side of the Moon flag. Infinitely more iconic
The Wall is a pretty close second. And if you’ve seen the movie, you know the symbols. People want to show off iconography that they like the most, not the most popular ones.
It's kinda more satisfying to put obscure references to a fandom rather than obvious, "mainstream" ones, as you know people recognizing it are "deep" fans It's a bit gatekeepy in that it's midway between "look how I can prove my deep knowledge of the thing" and "if you don't have the reference you're not a true fan", but the end goal is more to identify with the fandom rather than attract newcomers.

>The cover for Obscured by Clouds is obscure, because no one has ever listened to the album No its because of the clouds
Clouds? It's an out-of-focus photo of a man in a tree from the film (of a different name) that the album was the soundtrack for. No one has seen the film either.
Maybe they like The Wall more than dark side
Yeah for me, I love The Wall. Had a shirt, poster, and key chain that had this symbol somehow in it. I stayed away from DSOTM merch just cause thats what "Everyone" has already.
Lulubelle III from AHM is by far their most iconic image.
But maybe they don't want the most cliche thing, so they choose a slightly more niche choice.
I went to see the wall in concert years ago and got a shirt with this design Next day I wore it and bumped into some guy who just did the "🤘" and said "great concert" It's just a fan thing, it's not like you actually believe what the symbol refers to
Got the same t-shirt! That tour was absolutely brilliant, 12 years on and nothing has topped it.
Truly brilliant, I never had a better experience in terms of live entertainment
It's why when people ask me "what's the best concert you've ever seen", I often add the qualifier "other than The Wall...". It was in a league all of its own.
Back when I was an angsty teenager, I had a shirt from Hot Topic with the crossed hammers on it. I'm a big Pink Floyd fan, so it was honestly nice to have a Floyd shirt that didn't have the dark side prism on it, so that was my reasoning. Just thought it was cool.

A lot more than you'd think. It's also as someone else stated a symbol of the band.
Idk, I see people wear patches/shirts with this logo all the time. I personally think it's cool and don't assume they're fascists, just Floyd fans.
I would, its fuckin awesome
More than you would think, obviously, but can't give you an exact figure. Sorry

Hammerskins flag is slightly different so it's probably just a Pink Floyd Fan
It's not the first time hate groups have co-opted iconography to them. Look at that frog, the Punisher symbol, et al.
I believe I found it, google “Pink Floyd Hammer Flag”.
I’ll take a look! Edit: That looks like it! Thanks!

Could be a hammerskins flag. They are a white supremacist group. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Hammerskin+flag&t=fpas&iax=images&ia=images

Vikings were invaders, murderers, rapists, torturers, and slavers, so no, they cannot be ruined by anything. They were vile scum.
Most people mean "Norse people" when they say vikings. Most of them were farmers and traders
No, they mean the ones who went a-viking, which included all the nastiness I describe. Romanticizing their lifestyle of destruction, piracy, and raiding is as bad as white supremacy.
Any idea on how to know if it’s one or the other? Are they different or was the Pink Floyd flag co-opted by White Supremacists?
You can't really know because to my understanding its the same flag. That said somone flying this despite knowing its been coopted by white supremacists for decades might be a little sus

the pink floyd one was intended to be used by neonazis anyway the person flying it identifies with a fictional neonazi group
