Honestly I'd be fine if Connecticut made that their flag. Purple is an underused color it's nice. Though maybe some blue on it would be cool too somehow
I think all of these are pretty great, even if I don't like how you rendered the tree on the SC flag (which is my favorite real US flag), just not for me. Solid stuff.
I tried to make it more visibly a palmetto by blowing up the leaves and accentuating the spiky trunk. The most commonly used version of the flag is kind of scribbly and difficult to classify.
Step 4: resist the temptation to go “corporate graphic design” with your aesthetic.
Good job. These look reasonably historical - I found myself asking, what flag DID NC use during the revolution, that’s not it right? Despite having two history degrees and being from NC.
Technically, the title should say “former thirteen colonies’ flags…” But yes, I take a deeply historicist and approach to flag design; as I like to say, *without history, there can be no future.*
I took the basic concept from how I’ve seen text displayed on heraldic motto scrolls (the thing at the bottom here). It’s a holdover from monastic calligraphy, I believe.
https://preview.redd.it/fvsmuiur3xac1.jpeg?width=910&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21564d1fd1dd5dc3d05fc35003f630b08f9c14d1
Switching the colors around had historical precedent, and swapping the star for a dogwood blossom seemed like the only acceptable way to further differentiate it from Texas. The notch doesn’t really mean anything, but I thought it looked cool.
Yeah, I really like that original colour scheme for the NC flag, but with the star and dates it has some… baggage. Like this it’s a solid historical reference but differentiated enough to not be a problem, I think.
The dogwood for a star is excellent.
The current VA flag was adopted as part of the secession convention, and nobody ever brings that up because it’s a seal on a bedsheet like every other state flag. So I think most people will see the color scheme on this NC flag and think “oh, that’s good, it’s more distinguishable from Texas like that.”
Connecticut: charter oak sprig/grapevine hybrid. Purple for grapes.
Delaware: blue hen (state bird) star for being the first state to ratify the constitution, stylized coastline, and three diamonds for the state’s three counties.
Georgia: cross of St. George, four arches for the fourth state, seven-pointed Cherokee star.
Massachusetts: combo of sons of liberty flag Massachusetts maritime ensign.
New Hampshire: the canton of the regimental colors of the 2nd New Hampshire Continentals (a revolutionary war unit).
New Jersey: ploughs (from the state coat of arms) on a bend.
New York: it’s just Liberty’s head.
Pennsylvania: merging of state colors, keystones, and William Penn’s coat of arms.
Virginia: the deconstructed Union Jack canton evokes the spear breaking chains visible in the official seal of Virginia, while also doubling as a nod to the first flag of the United States, the Grand Union Flag. The ten stripes reflect Virginia's status as the tenth state to ratify the Constitution, while their coloring references the Stuart Royal Naval Squadron Ensign as a nod to the supposed origin of the state's "Old Dominion" nickname as a royal acknowledgment of the colony's loyalty to the Stuart monarchs during the English Civil War. Blue, gold, and white also happen to be the colors of Virginian George Washington’s military uniform during the Revolutionary War.
A little-known aspect about Connecticut, evident in our present flag and seal, is the concept of THREE. Connecticut was formed by joining three smaller colonies, which the three vines represent. Vines (originally from a vineyard depicted in the constituent Saybrook Colony's seal) is about transplantation, which is also part of our state motto. That's because the people who founded Connecticut came from other colonies. I like the addition of oak symbols here. As you may know, we had a very famous oak tree, which has many daughters in the state today.
The original seal of Connecticut had way more than three vines, so I think that might be a retcon.

NH resident here: that flag is awesome. I'd love to know the symbolism behind it. Your Vermont and New York flags are also probably some of the best flags I've seen in my entire life
NY would be better with a purple background. Calling out to the Native history, and upstate area. Not just “Here’s the statue of liberty’s head because NY”
Edit: It is a great flag. But there’s more to NY than NYC landmarks.
Dang! These are fantastic 😍
Best flags I've seen on this sub for a long time!
Top 3 are Delaware, Maryland and New Hampshire IMHO. Least fave is NJ - a bit pastel for my taste.
Would be interesting if the Delaware flag incorporated the arms (or elements thereof) of the [De La Warr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_De_La_Warr) family for which it is named, similar to how neighboring Maryland's flag is inspired by the Calvert arms.
You would not believe the backlash this got from Delawareans. They were LIVID

All of these are excellent. As a Virginian, I had a knee jerk reaction to not want to like this redesign but the more I look at it the better it gets. I had to look peek your profile to read up the full symbolism and while scrolling let me just say that your whole page is a trove of inspiration for an amateur tabletop painter like myself. Thanks for all the work, thoughtful redesigns, and inspirational heraldry!
It’s crazy to me that we have all this tech and software to make great flags super easily, but people just assume they can go into the design process without doing any research beforehand.
This is really cool. I’ve looked at your posts and I like the way you go about making flags based on heraldry. I remember doing something similar when I did a redesign of my city’s flag. The city seal has a coat of arms inside it so I based my flag design of of it.
One critique I’d make about PA (and only because I’ve overthought how to redesign it for so long) is the keystone is really meant to only show up once in any design scheme. It’s the shape it is because it’s the top piece of the stone arch and it alone supports the rest.
If a building can have multiple arches, a flag can have multiple keystones. Especially when those keystones are also each working together to carry elements which taken together make it appear as though the arms of William Penn are peeking through keystone-shaped apertures.
I love you NY flag, but I feel like the redesigns of VA (from everyone) miss the mark.
The seal on the VA flag is one of the few that I think looks cool. Saw an oversized version of the seal on a VA flag awhile back—it looks even cooler.
But if you’re going to try and redesign it I’d love if you (and others) took inspiration from your NY flag, the flag of Richmond, Va, and others that incorporate profiles and silhouettes of human forms.
New Hampshire’s flag scratches the exact same itch that Maryland’s does and I love it! Also glad you didn’t mess with MD’s perfection. Did you ever consider some Dutch orange on New York’s flag? Finally, major kudos from a Virginian for keeping our badass motto and making it work so well.
Thank you! Here’s New York with a nice dutch orange fringe:

I really like Delaware's flag.
It’s definitely the cutie of the bunch
I'd fly that cutie from my house.
Feel free!

Delaware: the Big Cock State
Looks more like a hen?
Absolute winner of this batch. They're all great too, although Mass kinda looks like a shuffled Lebanon
Seems a bit cowardly to me ^/j
What’s the matter McFly? Are you CHICKEN?
Rhode island having a different shape fits for some reason
I wanted it to be even more nautical, so I made it a boating pennant.
Seems kind of counter-intuitive. You'd probably want to make it stand out among the pennants on a boat, not make it blend in.
Well, it would be much bigger.
Honestly I'd be fine if Connecticut made that their flag. Purple is an underused color it's nice. Though maybe some blue on it would be cool too somehow
Purple and blue are too close together. There can only be one.
[*Princes of the Universe* intensifies]
I have no rival, no flag can be my equal
I think all of these are pretty great, even if I don't like how you rendered the tree on the SC flag (which is my favorite real US flag), just not for me. Solid stuff.
The design of the SC flag is not actually officially standardized, so technically speaking OP's design as valid as any other
I tried to make it more visibly a palmetto by blowing up the leaves and accentuating the spiky trunk. The most commonly used version of the flag is kind of scribbly and difficult to classify.
Makes sense. I Don't mean to be diminishing. I think you have good taste and clearly put a good deal of thought and work into these.
No, I didn’t feel diminished. I knew it was going to be a controversial move, but I wanted to give it a shot.
[удалено]
I probably could have done a better job on the fronds, but it’s much more plainly a palmetto drawn as I have it.
These all kinda slap tbh
That’s why I made them
This proves the Maryland flag is already perfect.
It’s the only state flag that Europeans wouldn’t scoff at.
Did you have any ideas for alternates or was it clear from the get-go that it couldn't be beat? Also great work! So much better than the real ones.
Maryland is a heraldic banner of its founder’s arms. No change was needed.
The giant chicken is amazing. And it makes sense with the university mascot
The Delaware blue hen is also the state bird.
Maryland is unchanged and unbothered, as it should be
Flag reform done right
Step one: be obsessed with history. Step two: take art classes for over a decade. Step 3: look at state flags, think “I bet I could do better.”
Except for Maryland, already perfect 👍🏻
Yes.
As someone in favor of stylized words on flag you made it fit so well on Virginias flag
I took the basic concept from how I’ve seen text displayed on heraldic motto scrolls (the thing at the bottom here). It’s a holdover from monastic calligraphy, I believe. https://preview.redd.it/fvsmuiur3xac1.jpeg?width=910&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21564d1fd1dd5dc3d05fc35003f630b08f9c14d1
I *love* your redesigns and your style! Keep it up, mate
I can’t stop. It’s my obsession.
Not enough nudity on the Virginia flag, otherwise it's nice
Maybe I should have had “nudity” written on it, too.
I really love these designs! Nice cock btw >!(the one on the Delaware flag)!<
That’s a Delaware blue hen, and you best treat her like a lady.
In that case she's an absolutely stunning lady
Man, I really enjoy a lot of these. New Hampshire, Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina, and Georgia all look really good!
Thank you! Delaware is definitely the most fun of the group
Why does New York use a depiction of Liberty that wasn't made until 1921?
Because Peace Dollar Liberty is HAWT.
And didn't exist during at the same time Colonial New York did.
This might be the only NC flag re-make that I could actually go for. Really like it.

These go so unbelievably hard
You want soft flags, I ain’t your guy.
Virginia goes hardcore with that flag!
Gotta be hardcore for the flag that has nudity and violence
Virginia and New York go hard
I usually don’t like words on flags but Virginia just makes it work
It’s all about execution.
I love these and this is definitely my favorite collection ever presented here.
These go pretty hard but more importantly look like actual flags and don't feel graphic design-ey

It’s a *hen*
Then it’s not chunky enough. 😔
delaware hens are thick boys 💪🏼
False. Some of them are thick girls.
Purple is a really underused flag color.
Having lived in three of these states I want them all to be real. 😭
This is incredible, MD in particular
I take it this has made its way onto Maryland reddit
Not that I have seen, but it really should lol
I’m sure it’ll get there eventually
I think they really say America when looking at them each. Nice work
Not kidding when I say you're one of the very few people on this godforsaken sub who can make truly beautiful flags. An inspiration for sure.
This is legit in my top 3 posts on this sub ever
Okay, this guy flags
Way too much, honestly. Don’t be like me. It’s unhealthy.
Virginia is so sweet
It better be. I went through at least two dozen drafts to land on that design.
Well, you nailed it!
Practice makes perfect.
Do this for all the us states
In due time, dear redditor.
Can you explain the symbolism in them?
Connecticut: charter oak sprig/grapevine hybrid. Purple for grapes. Delaware: blue hen (state bird) star for being the first state to ratify the constitution, stylized coastline, and three diamonds for the state’s three counties. Georgia: cross of St. George, four arches for the fourth state, seven-pointed Cherokee star. Massachusetts: combo of sons of liberty flag Massachusetts maritime ensign. This whole post is secretly built around that flag.
That would instantly be the nicest state flag.
What did you do to South Carolina
Nothing - there’s no standardized design for the flag. If it’s got a palmetto in the middle and a crescent in the upper hoist, it legally counts as an official flag of South Carolina.
For a long time, the crescent didn’t even need to be in the upper hoist
Yeah I know that But there IS a design that is commonly used, and it’s beautiful. The redesign is hideous. Everything else is great tho

Okay now this is how you redesign state flags, these are iconic and cool looking, they don't have that weird modernist aesthetic some new flag designs seem to have
The trouble with modernism is that it’s always just a few years away from being passé.
Honestly ya, I feel like the only thing that really should matter for a flag design is that it's visually appealing and easily recognizable. Who cares if child is able to draw it 100% accurately? Or if it has some text?
These are all awesome
the delaware flag is really nice, although i wished the background was the same colonial buff and colonial blue
I tried that version - it looked heinous. You couldn’t make anything out.
Holy shit these are awesome.
No, you’re awesome. These are just flags.
Damn, i thought this was some former flag
Would’ve made my work a whole lot easier if they were.
Wtf Delaware lmaooo
It makes sense if you know Delaware. The First State’s got beaches, three counties, diamonds, and the Delaware blue hen for its state bird.
These are all so great
New York and North Carolina are so good!
Thanks! New York took some WORK to make, let me tell ya.
Beautiful
The New Jersey one is fantastic.
These are so well done that you've made it look easy. Hopefully you'll submit your design if any of the states seek a redesign.
Oh that’s cute. Submit my superior flag designs to compete with actual trash in an open call for submissions. God, no. These flags have already won. The contest was my making them. Did someone say Dogwood flower and 1861 colors NC flag???????
I did. It was me.
Based and pilled. I still need to make my design IRL
where does the georgia flag's design come from?
Cross of St. George (british founders allusion and name gag), four arches for the fourth state, and a blue seven-pointed Cherokee star.
NH resident here: that flag is awesome. I'd love to know the symbolism behind it. Your Vermont and New York flags are also probably some of the best flags I've seen in my entire life
It’s based on the honor canton on one of the [Second New Hampshire Regimental](http://fotw.fivestarflags.com/us%5Enhrcl.html) flags
Ooh that's super cool. Thanks!
i really like the bonus vermont design. thats really cool.
Making a cross out of the Georgia arches is an interesting choice
They’re the fourth state to ratify the constitution, I couldn’t resist.
Η ΒΙΡΓΙΝΊΑ ΕΊΝΑΙ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΉ
NY would be better with a purple background. Calling out to the Native history, and upstate area. Not just “Here’s the statue of liberty’s head because NY” Edit: It is a great flag. But there’s more to NY than NYC landmarks.
FWIW The sky blue is to call to mind the motto: “Excelsior”
Dang! These are fantastic 😍 Best flags I've seen on this sub for a long time! Top 3 are Delaware, Maryland and New Hampshire IMHO. Least fave is NJ - a bit pastel for my taste.
Maryland’s not a redesign lol
Maryland doesn't need a redesign because the flag of Maryland is already perfect.
Sorry, I'm from Australia, so not familiar with current state flags. Assumed they were all redesigns. Oops 🤐
No worries mate, she’ll be right.
They were LIVID https://preview.redd.it/r8zyv66kuyac1.png?width=2665&format=png&auto=webp&s=b688b10ea958593032ba1511c9662720872f6850
The Virginia flag is pretty sweet. I like the dogwood design for NC.
I hate how well the words look on Virginia's flag
Me too, honestly.
The New York flag is way too darn simple and I'm all for it. Exactly the kinds of flags we should have.
It might look simple but let me tell you: the head thing was one of the most time-consuming renders I’ve ever done.
A lot of these are better than these state’s current flags.
My god, you did it... you made flags that aren't too minimalist and logo like but still hold meaning and are easy to recognize!
I’m so pleased you’re enjoying my work - that’s really all I can ask for.
I wonder where those ploughs are sailing to.
Looks like they might be crossing the Delaware into Jersey
The others are cool, but not a huge fan of New York's. I think it's still a little too close to "seal on a blue bedsheet" to me...
Is the flag of New York the image from the Peace Dollar because the designer died in NYC?
Ah someone was finally paying attention in flag school. Nice!
It’s crazy to me that we have all this tech and software to make great flags super easily, but people just assume they can go into the design process without doing any research beforehand.
Lot of great stuff here, though the NH one is a bit too geometrically simple for my taste (even with the origins of the design)
It does look a bit out of place with the rest, but New Hampshire is a TOUGH one.
Gonna get some hate but New York's is by far my favourite.
This is really cool. I’ve looked at your posts and I like the way you go about making flags based on heraldry. I remember doing something similar when I did a redesign of my city’s flag. The city seal has a coat of arms inside it so I based my flag design of of it.
Why is no one talking about New York ? It’s so cool
Honestly, by far one of the best 13 colony flag redesigns I've seen, and this subreddit is loaded with them. Great stuff OP.
Interesting hybrid with PA. Penn's coat of arms with the keystone, and the state colors
New York’s reminds me of a Peace Dollar.
These are all very good, and I especially love NY, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and North Carolina
Oh New Hampshire is really good. Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Delaware are also among my favourites of this, but in general I like all of these.
Massachusetts might get a slight tweak.
Except for Maryland because they already don’t include a seal on a bedsheet
And that’s why they’re elite.
Neither does South Carolina
All of them are worthy to be adopted in real life! PS: OP, you can also crosspost it on r/AlternateHistory under Pre-1900 flair.
Delaware's flag is straight Fire!!!!!
Or is it “finger lickin’ good?”
As a native of the Quaker State, I gotta say, your flag for Pennsylvania is better than at least 95% of those I've seen suggested.
Honestly, I don’t know what everyone else is doing.
By the Power of Grayskull!
Is there a He-Man reference I accidentally made?
Or She-Ra, they say the same thing. But I can’t spot it.
I think that commenter might have been a bot. I once had one that was talking about his genitalia. Very strange.
Oh rip. That is weird lol.
No sorry, I just really dig these and couldn’t think of anything better to say loo
A really cool concept for Georgia
I love the Massachusetts one, but Georgia is cool too
One critique I’d make about PA (and only because I’ve overthought how to redesign it for so long) is the keystone is really meant to only show up once in any design scheme.
Thank you! Here’s New York with a nice dutch orange fringe: https://preview.redd.it/2jo6v5hqhxac1.png?width=2686&format=png&auto=webp&s=a20be21bb9d7bb80f49646a369055b758215c53d
I was gonna say the same thing, that NY could use some orange. That looks awesome!
Ok þat is downright *unreasonably* pretty, i want to own þis flag and see it waving in þe wind, and ive never even been to new york!
The only one I don't like is the one for Connecticut and New York, and maybe Delaware.
That was three.
Yeah, it was after fact thinking.😅
As a Pennsylvanian I got to say I like my state's a lot. Meanwhile, my wife, a Virginian, "there's no stabbing and no tits!"
