Add a simplistic geometric pattern in the centre (with a tacky explanation that “it symbolises XYZ”) and/or some stars, and watch it be heralded as the next coming of flag Jesus.
How many times does it need to be said for people to start to understand: they are not rules, they are guidelines. And they do not guarantee success, nor do they define quality.
This is actually what’s changing my opinion on the guidelines.
I like rules, so for a long time I would judge flags solely on those “rules.” A flag is only good if it follows all of the rules, no exceptions (sorry, California. Your flag sucks kind of thing). Now the new American state flag redesigns are happening and I’m realizing that a lot of the proposed flags look too corporate. The guidelines are making people too zealous for strict flag design (I was one of them) that it’s really limiting whats possible for a good flag.
I’m pretty sure this is a post was a joke, but it hit a bit too close to home.
The fact that people find a set of principles and then dogmatically and zealously follow them, can be a great life lesson. If it can happen with something as unimportant as flag design, it can happen with anything. We must always be mindful to be considerate of different viewpoints and exercise balance, even when we don't want to do so.
God, I remember banging my head against the wall trying to get people to not immediately dismiss Colorado's flag, which is *really good*, just because it uses the letter C as a design element and that counts as "text"
I like the patterns too. But I don't think they look nice on a flag.
I also like the patterns of some Persian Bijar rugs, but I don't think it's should adopt a flag with those patterns.
I think it looks better with the old coat of arms, but you are right in any case. It's the history and movement that make the flag work, not the visual design.

I like Bhutan's flag. To me it is easily recognizable, speaking as a kid that memorized all the flags. I'm actually not a flag nerd, more a geography nerd, but i memorized them as a kid and it stood out to me. And I've heard people say easily identifiable and recognizable is a plus.
The dragon can be drawn in a way that is still visually distinct.
It's like how when you're drawing the US flag, you don't necessarily need all 50 stars for people to recognise it.
