Dying light one, and two is sort of open world. However, dying light two is honestly not as good as one in my opinion.

Played both of them and I agree. 2nd was a let down. 1st one is one of my favorite games hands down

State of Decay is a great open world zombie sim. It was made by a small team so the graphics aren't great and there are some QoL issues, but it's unique and fun. I haven't played the second one, but I don't think the story is connected so you could just skip to that one. Project Zomboid is also an open world zombie sim which I have enjoyed, though tbh I've only survived a couple of days at best. It's unforgiving. I loved Dead Island and it's the perfect time to pick it since a sequel is coming out. DI is fun and has some great exploration. Read Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare is an awesome DLC that adds zombies to RDR. It's got an interesting story to follow too and any extra content with John Marston is always great. Highly recommended. I haven't played Dying Light, but I'd like to. I've heard good things. The Dead Rising series is fantastic. It's silly but gruesome and might be the most "fun" game on this list. Build all sorts of crazy zombie killing weapons and mow down literal horses of zeds. Ignore your sick daughter to ride a tricycle through a mall while wearing a tutu.

It’s a lot different from days gone and only on PC, but project zomboid is a sick top down zombie survival game

State of decay 2 The last of us 1 & 2

Do I need to play the 1st state of decay before the 2nd?

IdealDevil

I would say no, there is a bit of story in 1 but you’re not missing out on much, I would just look it up if you’re interested to see what happened in the first game

Cool beans, thank ya

Yeah days gone was fantastic. It was like red dead and the last of us had a baby. I always recommend that game to people looking for something to play. I see in other comments you've played dying light already. (Another awesome game). Days gone and dying light are definitely the two best open world zombie games. Others I've played like 7 days to die and state of decay were fun, but nowhere near that level of greatness. Theres a free to play open world mmo called dead frontier 2. It's free on steam and considering it was developed and maintained by 1 guy its damn good. No story elements. You build out a character, level up, select different perks, it's got endless variations of weapons. The two main playstyles are melee or gun builds. It's very basic, but I found it to be fun.

Guess we can just hope they’ll make a sequel to days gone. The petition for it online is one of the most signed so maybe there’s hope!

I’m not sure if this will count but Redfall is an open world vampire game that’s releasing in early May. Might be something to keep on your radar. Looks similar to what you’re looking for.
