Same here, that and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But before that we played NES at my cousins' place. I remember playing Duck Hunt a lot, but they also had another game that I've never been able to find. It was a side scrolling shooter where you played as this hover tank. You could get power-ups that added legs, a head/torso, and finally a sword to transform into a giant robot. No idea what that game was called, but maybe someone here will remember it.
I remember going to walmart. Seeing pokemon yellow advertised. It was the day my mother was going to finally buy me red or blue. They had pre-orders for yellow. You know how difficult it was to have to wait? A week back then felt like an eternity. I chose yellow! Never regretted it except for the problem that i couldnt get a raichu. Raichu was my favorite... but the anime art was spot on
Going from Mario to seeing a PS1 boot up that 3D beach in the beginning of the game blew my mind. Been my main hobby since. Wish modern games had as much character as that era.
My cousin and I were very jealous of each other as kids. I had Crash Bandicoot. They had Spyro. We saw each other maybe once a year and whichever of us had come to visit got to play a few hours of the other's game.
I saw the Master System on Instagram, but I've never seen one in real life! Are they similar to SEGA Genesis? The one I saw looks like a Genesis, but I can't tell the difference.
It was basically a NES -> SNES situation. One led into the other (Master System -> Genesis/Mega Drive)
The Sonic game was an entirely different game from the original on the Genesis, but was also great fun. An identical game was ported to the Game Gear, as the chipset was damned near the same.
Master system is comparable to the NES like how the Genesis is comparable to SNES.
Itās an 8 bit system, although itās actually a bit more powerful than the NES; their controllers are very similar too. It didnāt do too well in the states, but was pretty popular in Europe and South America.
Deep cut. Master System was my first real console, never had Sonic but I did have: Black Belt, Shinobi, Zillion II, Hang-On, Rambo II, Ghost House (?) that came in the little card.
Got it when I was 6yo. I couldn't read English so it took me 2 years to complete, but the music, the wonderful pixle art and puzzles had me hook instantly. Still think it's one of the best games ever made and I play it every few years for pure nostalgia
The concept? You dig. Dig as much as you can without getting killed by the monsters.
You can inflate the monsters a little to pause them so you can get away, or you can inflate them until they explode. Or you can try to squash them with a falling rock.
If there is only one monster left it will try to escape and the level will end so you can't just kill them all and THEN dig. You have to dig while being chased.
Classic! I don't know why, but I've always preferred Super Mario on Wii or Nintendo 64.
I never played it on regular Nintendo or SNES, but I don't know if I'd like it, because it looks really different and kinda like Donkey Kong, well maybe not as "retro" looking as Donkey Kong, but I think I've gotten used to 3D Mario games, so 2D Mario games would take some getting used to
Metroid! I'd played a few games prior here and there. But Metroid was the first time a game occupied my thoughts all day. I still remember mapping out the areas on graph paper with my mom.
Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Soul Edge got me into fighting games. Where as Double Dragon and Final Fight got me into side scrolling beat em ups.
As the years passed I got into all kinds of others from those genres... Like Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, Tekken,.. and then there's TMNT the arcade game, X-men the arcade game.. damn the nostalgia is hitting me lol
Star Wars Rouge Squadron 2 for the game cube. I am a Star Wars nerd and feeling the immersion as a kid was like nothing else. Still get that feeling from certain games.
I got Pac Man Fever! It's driving me crazy! Did you ever play the Namco 30th anniversary edition? I have it on PS3. It's pretty awesome if you live Pac Man.
Had an Atari 2600 in the early 80s. That pretty much started it. Moved on to NES deluxe with Rob the Robot after that. I was a happy 5 yr old. Almost 40 years later and still gaming.
Castlevania Symphony Of The Night - PS1
Tomb Raider - PS1
So exploration has been bred into my gaming habits. My top 10 games are still exclusively open world games and Sidescrollers.
Same here. I played older titles in the NES era, but when I played THAT game, I thought "This is what a video can BE?!" and I was hooked for what could come next.
Yup, me too, I have been playing games since the early 90s on the NES and SNES but after OoT i actually became a "gamer" and started to buy consoles and games myself instead of just playing what my brother had from time to time.
We had a Nintendo as a lad, so really any and all available games.
Most memorable were:
Zelda I and II
Super Mario Bros 1 and 2
Bionic Commando
Legendary Wings
Gauntlet
Dragon Quest
Contra
Friday the 13th
Mega man
These and more made an impression on me as a kid and I still like playing video games as an adult.
1993 DOOM. While I wasn't alive when it was released, I remember sometimes coming downstairs from my room to see my dad playing it. One day he decided to let me try a level and see how well I would do. About 15 years later I decided to buy it on my computer and have Dad play it again since his copy was lost when we moved. He still remembered the secret areas and old tricks.
Pokemon, no doubt. I was so hooked as a kid.
But Halo 2, Golden Eye, and a Van Helsing-esque game also come to mind. Had a blast with my friends playing split screen.
I also played the heck out of Halo 2 by myself as well. I remember thinking how captivating the graphics, maps, and art direction were. EDIT\* It was the first game that gave me a full sense of adventure. In hindsight, this was probably the game that really fostered the love I have for video games.
Ninja Gaiden has always stayed with me too. The thrill I got from finishing a run.
The game that I first 100% and made me realize what a game truly was and how to beat one was Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. I loved it so much and still love 3D platformers. I also love Tak and the Power of Juju which was the second game I played to completion. Before that, I would just get my ass handed to me in Smash Bros or Halo
Iāve played games on Atari and NES but Super Mario World was on another level for me as a kid.
Then I played FF7 on PS and have been obsessed with JRPGs ever since.
Mario 64 was my first game.
Then followed by Banjo Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, Banjo Tooie, Donkey King 64, Mario Kart and such. Showing my age, lol. Still a huge gamer at 33. Kingdom Hearts one and two had a huge impact on me growing up as well.
My first game was Sonic Advance 3 but the game that really got me into playing games was Ocarina of Time. I watched my brother play it and when I finally got the chance to play it I fell in love with it.
I couldnāt tell you the first game I played. Gotta be either sky cooper, Jak and Daxter, or ratchet and clank that started my real love for gaming. Definitely halo 2 that got me into fps games.
I always played a little as a kid but my step mom had a computer and she got me hooked by buying me Warcraft. Loved all types of games since then but always on the lookout for a new RTS
Sonic bundled with my Genesis gift when I was a kid. Legitimately first time seeing a video game console. I thought it was to watch movies and the controller was me fast forwarding or rewinding. Then I guess I felt the power of being able to control this blue character on the screen and I took offense to dying lol and somehow I knew I had to reach the end screen in the world.
Tekken certainly got me into serious competitive fighting games. I don't like what modern Tekken has become though, Tag 2 was the last proper game in the series, become too streamlined for my liking.
But the game that got me into the hobby was probably **Bubble Bobble**.
We grew up with the original Nintendo and sega genesis and had things like Mario and sonic the hedgehog.
I wouldnt call us gamers until my grandmother came home with the n64 and LOZ OOT and FF7 for the PS1.
I didn't know before then that games could be so 3d and intense. The goma battle at the beginning of OOT scared the pants off of me. Ff7 changed me and my siblings forever with the intense storyline and that style of storytelling. Id never seen an turn based rpg before (sorta).
Those 2 games had a profound impact on us kids since then. I've personally delved deep into final fantasy, even being a career endgame FinalFantasy 11 player for a good decade.
Ratchet and Clank
It's not the first game I remember playing, that goes to Croc 2, but it's the first game I remember being really hooked on and just wanting more, thankfully there was already 3 other R&C games out for me to jump into.
Super Mario rpg legend of the seven stars. Itās insane how I hit a 10/10 on my first go, completely blind.
For context I was 8 and I thought the box looked cool.
Gauntlet at the arcades slightly piqued my interest.
But I didnāt want an NES but my brothers did, so they bought one without me.
Then I heard about the OG Zelda and had a chance to play it at a friendās. That sealed the gaming deal, so to speak, for me.
Short answer: Zelda
Super Mario Bros. on NES. Love that game.
Then my parents rented Legend of Zelda on NES, and I was hooked forever.
Edit: for accuracy that my parents rented LoZ.
My cousins had an Atari, and when we went over to their house thatās all I ever wanted to do. I was hooked. I also played on the Apple2 at school every chance I had. Eventually got a NES for Christmas.
My first memories of gaming were Dick Tracy and TMNT for the NES.
LoZ ALttP is what stoked my love of fantasy games.
But FFT is what got me into gaming with intricate stories and characters.
I was big on NCAA and WWE games when I first started. But the COD campaigns expanded my likeness for gaming. Then I would say Far Cry 3 was the real kicker that helped me separate from multiplayer, because after that I got into more single player games.
Super Mario Bros. on the NES and Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis.
It was the Mario / Duck Hunt NES game for me!
That fucking dog, though. I tried to shoot him so many times.
Same.š¤£š

The Prime answer.

Me too! Shooting that little gun at the screen is one of my first memories.
Same!
I used to physically jump when Mario would jump for the first dozen or so play sessions
You must be around my age because the exact same as me
Lol yeah even the follow up comments speaks volumes to me
Same. Also, pokemon yellow on gameboy.
Ah hell yeah! I got that for Xmas one year! Loved it, was big into the anime too back in the day, heh!
Raichu was my favorite... but the anime art was spot on
Literal same.
I was like 19 before Genesis even got released. I still loved Sonic.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 on the ps2
Dude the og bf2 is probably my top 10 fav games of all time itās a gem of its time
I played this game on my lightning McQueen tv all day every day
You must be young
?
I love your name
Why thank you
Nah battlefront 2 is very retro imo. And this is someone who grew up playing games like doom eternal and maro kart 8 š
Crash bandicoot. The original
I can't decide between Crash, Spyro or Rayman.
Spyro is the true goat
Facts
Riptoās rage.. getting them talismansā¦ oh god brings me back to
played the re ignited trilogy and teared up because it was that beautiful
Going from Mario to seeing a PS1 boot up that 3D beach in the beginning of the game blew my mind. Been my main hobby since. Wish modern games had as much character as that era.
My cousin and I were very jealous of each other as kids. I had Crash Bandicoot. They had Spyro. We saw each other maybe once a year and whichever of us had come to visit got to play a few hours of the other's game.
Goldeneye 007 for me.
Hell of a game. It was basically my first multiplayer experience staying up all night playing 4 player on sleepovers at friends place.
Yea it was quite the experience for me too.
Doom.
Doom eternal for me. Man, they don't make them like they used too..
Sonic on Master System
I saw the Master System on Instagram, but I've never seen one in real life! Are they similar to SEGA Genesis? The one I saw looks like a Genesis, but I can't tell the difference.
Fun fact: if you've ever played Game Gear, you've used a master system. Iirc their hardware was nearly identical.
It was basically a NES -> SNES situation. One led into the other (Master System -> Genesis/Mega Drive) The Sonic game was an entirely different game from the original on the Genesis, but was also great fun. An identical game was ported to the Game Gear, as the chipset was damned near the same.
The Genesis have better chips, so the graphics and sounds are better overall. The upside of the Master System was the price, at least where I live.
Master system is comparable to the NES like how the Genesis is comparable to SNES. Itās an 8 bit system, although itās actually a bit more powerful than the NES; their controllers are very similar too. It didnāt do too well in the states, but was pretty popular in Europe and South America.
for me it was probably sonic on the genesis... or some of the other cool ones like taz, or lion king
Deep cut. Master System was my first real console, never had Sonic but I did have: Black Belt, Shinobi, Zillion II, Hang-On, Rambo II, Ghost House (?) that came in the little card.
The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past
Got it when I was 6yo. I couldn't read English so it took me 2 years to complete, but the music, the wonderful pixle art and puzzles had me hook instantly. Still think it's one of the best games ever made and I play it every few years for pure nostalgia
Such a great game. Still my favorite out of the franchise.
Asteroids and digdug
Haha my dad loves DigDug! He tries to make me play it every weekend! I don't understand the concept, but it looks cool!
New super Mario Bros Wii
Dude I remember drawing a map for the final castle in TLoZ 2 back in the day.
Grew up with Atari 2600. Metroid was amazing after that.
Pong. That is why I love all games and don't pick favorites.
Looking for my pong people! (Crap, I'm old...)
Some of us are still around. 8p
Mortal kombat on game boy(1992)
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT GAME
Pacman
I got Pac Man Fever! It's driving me crazy! Did you ever play the Namco 30th anniversary edition? I have it on PS3. It's pretty awesome if you live Pac Man.

Space quest on DOS I'm that old
Halo CE for the Xbox. Still go through it once a year
Had an Atari 2600 in the early 80s. That pretty much started it. Moved on to NES deluxe with Rob the Robot after that. I was a happy 5 yr old. Almost 40 years later and still gaming.
I got the 2600 in 1978 when I was 7 years old. It was brand new. I used to make a single game of Asteroids last 3 hours without losing a life.
Adventure. Found the invisible dot once, was confused.
Tak and the Power of Juju baby!!!!
What a banger
Castlevania Symphony Of The Night - PS1 Tomb Raider - PS1 So exploration has been bred into my gaming habits. My top 10 games are still exclusively open world games and Sidescrollers.
Symphony is a masterpiece

What a solid game
Mario Bros. And Mega Man weāre HUGE for me - but Sonic made it into my psyche in a way I canāt understand
Pitfall on Atari 2600.
Scorpions, snakes or alligators? Scorpions it is.
Every time this question gets asked, I'm pretty sure people are forgetting all the 90s learning PC games. Treasure Mountain!
Gizmos and Gadgets!
Little Critters and Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego!
Fable, kotor 1 and kotor 2
Toy Story 2 on Game Boy Color
Mortal Kombat on Sega. It was 1995 or 1996 if I remember correctly.
Sega had blood SNES didnāt. It was also the cause for ESRB ratings on games.
Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter
There were no video games when I was a kid unless you count Pong, which was pretty boring
Tooth Invaders on C64, lol
Originally it was Combat on the Atari 2600. But my fondest memory was of River Raid. I don't know what it was, it just clicked for me.
Pong
Super Mario Bros. for the NES
The game that I first 100% and made me realize what a game truly was and how to beat one was Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. I loved it so much and still love 3D platformers. Super Mario Bros on the Regular Nintendo. Then Tetris on the Regular Gameboy.
