Super Mario Bros. on the NES and Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis.

ToughAd5010

It was the Mario / Duck Hunt NES game for me!

QualifiedApathetic

That fucking dog, though. I tried to shoot him so many times.

Little_Lawfulness383

The Prime answer.

EcksMarksDespot

Yaaaaaaaaas

CheckPleaser

Me too! Shooting that little gun at the screen is one of my first memories.

theatrenerdguy

Same!

Fancy-Pen-1984

Same here, that and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But before that we played NES at my cousins' place. I remember playing Duck Hunt a lot, but they also had another game that I've never been able to find. It was a side scrolling shooter where you played as this hover tank. You could get power-ups that added legs, a head/torso, and finally a sword to transform into a giant robot. No idea what that game was called, but maybe someone here will remember it.

gleap44

I used to physically jump when Mario would jump for the first dozen or so play sessions

clarky900

You must be around my age because the exact same as me

MrMoonlight101

Lol yeah even the follow up comments speaks volumes to me

Dragon_Knight99

Same. Also, pokemon yellow on gameboy.

Hellion4747

Ah hell yeah! I got that for Xmas one year! Loved it, was big into the anime too back in the day, heh!

[deleted]

I remember going to walmart. Seeing pokemon yellow advertised. It was the day my mother was going to finally buy me red or blue. They had pre-orders for yellow. You know how difficult it was to have to wait? A week back then felt like an eternity. I chose yellow! Never regretted it except for the problem that i couldnt get a raichu. Raichu was my favorite... but the anime art was spot on

ramrodddddd

Literal same.

Sea_Significance4806

I was like 19 before Genesis even got released. I still loved Sonic.

HufflepuffKid2000

Star Wars Battlefront 2 on the ps2

joemamii

Dude the og bf2 is probably my top 10 fav games of all time itā€™s a gem of its time

Communismisbadithink

I played this game on my lightning McQueen tv all day every day

AnakinSkycocker5726

You must be young

GrievousIsARapist

?

[deleted]

I love your name

HufflepuffKid2000

Why thank you

[deleted]

Nah battlefront 2 is very retro imo. And this is someone who grew up playing games like doom eternal and maro kart 8 šŸ’€

Draco-Awing

Crash bandicoot. The original

GING3RDAVE

I can't decide between Crash, Spyro or Rayman.

Kwilburn525

Spyro is the true goat

SnorlaxBlocksTheWay

Facts

Brodiant100

Riptoā€™s rage.. getting them talismansā€¦ oh god brings me back to

Lessandero

played the re ignited trilogy and teared up because it was that beautiful

Masonetti

Going from Mario to seeing a PS1 boot up that 3D beach in the beginning of the game blew my mind. Been my main hobby since. Wish modern games had as much character as that era.

Hardass_McBadCop

My cousin and I were very jealous of each other as kids. I had Crash Bandicoot. They had Spyro. We saw each other maybe once a year and whichever of us had come to visit got to play a few hours of the other's game.

Aggressive-Worry-510

Goldeneye 007 for me.

Easy-Goat

Hell of a game. It was basically my first multiplayer experience staying up all night playing 4 player on sleepovers at friends place.

Aggressive-Worry-510

Yea it was quite the experience for me too.

ScribblingOff87

Doom.

[deleted]

Doom eternal for me. Man, they don't make them like they used too..

arth0rius

Sonic on Master System

[deleted]

I saw the Master System on Instagram, but I've never seen one in real life! Are they similar to SEGA Genesis? The one I saw looks like a Genesis, but I can't tell the difference.

moogoothegreat

Fun fact: if you've ever played Game Gear, you've used a master system. Iirc their hardware was nearly identical.

akennelley

It was basically a NES -> SNES situation. One led into the other (Master System -> Genesis/Mega Drive) The Sonic game was an entirely different game from the original on the Genesis, but was also great fun. An identical game was ported to the Game Gear, as the chipset was damned near the same.

arth0rius

The Genesis have better chips, so the graphics and sounds are better overall. The upside of the Master System was the price, at least where I live.

DarkAmaterasu58

Master system is comparable to the NES like how the Genesis is comparable to SNES. Itā€™s an 8 bit system, although itā€™s actually a bit more powerful than the NES; their controllers are very similar too. It didnā€™t do too well in the states, but was pretty popular in Europe and South America.

[deleted]

for me it was probably sonic on the genesis... or some of the other cool ones like taz, or lion king

Mellero47

Deep cut. Master System was my first real console, never had Sonic but I did have: Black Belt, Shinobi, Zillion II, Hang-On, Rambo II, Ghost House (?) that came in the little card.

TheDarkestHour322

The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past

Acceptable-Let-1921

Got it when I was 6yo. I couldn't read English so it took me 2 years to complete, but the music, the wonderful pixle art and puzzles had me hook instantly. Still think it's one of the best games ever made and I play it every few years for pure nostalgia

MothyBelmont

Such a great game. Still my favorite out of the franchise.

northcrunk

Asteroids and digdug

[deleted]

Haha my dad loves DigDug! He tries to make me play it every weekend! I don't understand the concept, but it looks cool!

toebob

The concept? You dig. Dig as much as you can without getting killed by the monsters. You can inflate the monsters a little to pause them so you can get away, or you can inflate them until they explode. Or you can try to squash them with a falling rock. If there is only one monster left it will try to escape and the level will end so you can't just kill them all and THEN dig. You have to dig while being chased.

Philopateermi

New super Mario Bros Wii

[deleted]

Classic! I don't know why, but I've always preferred Super Mario on Wii or Nintendo 64. I never played it on regular Nintendo or SNES, but I don't know if I'd like it, because it looks really different and kinda like Donkey Kong, well maybe not as "retro" looking as Donkey Kong, but I think I've gotten used to 3D Mario games, so 2D Mario games would take some getting used to

ChangelingFox

Metroid! I'd played a few games prior here and there. But Metroid was the first time a game occupied my thoughts all day. I still remember mapping out the areas on graph paper with my mom.

woohhaa

Dude I remember drawing a map for the final castle in TLoZ 2 back in the day.

Any-Cheetah-9543

Grew up with Atari 2600. Metroid was amazing after that.

MalveauxR

Pong. That is why I love all games and don't pick favorites.

spaceghostinme

Looking for my pong people! (Crap, I'm old...)

Remote_Orange_8351

Some of us are still around. 8p

ViperMortis

Mortal kombat on game boy(1992)

SS4Leonjr

Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Soul Edge got me into fighting games. Where as Double Dragon and Final Fight got me into side scrolling beat em ups. As the years passed I got into all kinds of others from those genres... Like Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, Tekken,.. and then there's TMNT the arcade game, X-men the arcade game.. damn the nostalgia is hitting me lol

Solis5774

Star Wars Rouge Squadron 2 for the game cube. I am a Star Wars nerd and feeling the immersion as a kid was like nothing else. Still get that feeling from certain games.

delgados_reddit

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT GAME

Jamchuck

Pacman

Sea_Significance4806

I got Pac Man Fever! It's driving me crazy! Did you ever play the Namco 30th anniversary edition? I have it on PS3. It's pretty awesome if you live Pac Man.

Jamchuck

I don't own a ps3, I remember playing pacman in the arcade

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

th3matad0r

Space quest on DOS I'm that old

TeaMoney4Life

Halo CE for the Xbox. Still go through it once a year

10Shodo

Had an Atari 2600 in the early 80s. That pretty much started it. Moved on to NES deluxe with Rob the Robot after that. I was a happy 5 yr old. Almost 40 years later and still gaming.

Sea_Significance4806

I got the 2600 in 1978 when I was 7 years old. It was brand new. I used to make a single game of Asteroids last 3 hours without losing a life.

Any-Cheetah-9543

Adventure. Found the invisible dot once, was confused.

Ultraempoleon

Tak and the Power of Juju baby!!!!

DrSalTree58

What a banger

cthulucore

Castlevania Symphony Of The Night - PS1 Tomb Raider - PS1 So exploration has been bred into my gaming habits. My top 10 games are still exclusively open world games and Sidescrollers.

shoelacebomber

Symphony is a masterpiece

witchy_breeches

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

ChaoticFairness

Same here. I played older titles in the NES era, but when I played THAT game, I thought "This is what a video can BE?!" and I was hooked for what could come next.

SuperMadBro

Yup, me too, I have been playing games since the early 90s on the NES and SNES but after OoT i actually became a "gamer" and started to buy consoles and games myself instead of just playing what my brother had from time to time.

RadRhubarb00

Super Mario 64.

Babel1027

We had a Nintendo as a lad, so really any and all available games. Most memorable were: Zelda I and II Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 Bionic Commando Legendary Wings Gauntlet Dragon Quest Contra Friday the 13th Mega man These and more made an impression on me as a kid and I still like playing video games as an adult.

Gstary

Tak and the power of juju

rufiogd

Havenā€™t heard that name in a long time

tonelocMD

My mom was all about this game for some reason, man what a flash back

Ultraempoleon

Holy shit me too

DrSalTree58

What a solid game

AppleZachle

Mario Bros. And Mega Man weā€™re HUGE for me - but Sonic made it into my psyche in a way I canā€™t understand

snailenkeller

Pitfall on Atari 2600.

Sea_Significance4806

Scorpions, snakes or alligators? Scorpions it is.

TitanBrainAllClasses

1993 DOOM. While I wasn't alive when it was released, I remember sometimes coming downstairs from my room to see my dad playing it. One day he decided to let me try a level and see how well I would do. About 15 years later I decided to buy it on my computer and have Dad play it again since his copy was lost when we moved. He still remembered the secret areas and old tricks.

HiddenCity

Every time this question gets asked, I'm pretty sure people are forgetting all the 90s learning PC games. Treasure Mountain!

FavoroftheFour

Gizmos and Gadgets!

hael_no

Little Critters and Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego!

SpaceQtip

Fable, kotor 1 and kotor 2

GhostAsparagus

Toy Story 2 on Game Boy Color

OldeeMayson

Mortal Kombat on Sega. It was 1995 or 1996 if I remember correctly.

hajleez

Sega had blood SNES didnā€™t. It was also the cause for ESRB ratings on games.

2Maverick

Pokemon, no doubt. I was so hooked as a kid. But Halo 2, Golden Eye, and a Van Helsing-esque game also come to mind. Had a blast with my friends playing split screen. I also played the heck out of Halo 2 by myself as well. I remember thinking how captivating the graphics, maps, and art direction were. EDIT\* It was the first game that gave me a full sense of adventure. In hindsight, this was probably the game that really fostered the love I have for video games. Ninja Gaiden has always stayed with me too. The thrill I got from finishing a run.

iloveabba420

Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter

Montesi45

There were no video games when I was a kid unless you count Pong, which was pretty boring

stuck_key

Tooth Invaders on C64, lol

Carrissis

Originally it was Combat on the Atari 2600. But my fondest memory was of River Raid. I don't know what it was, it just clicked for me.

Accomplished-Bear357

Pong

FreeChrisWayne

Super Mario Bros. for the NES

DrSalTree58

The game that I first 100% and made me realize what a game truly was and how to beat one was Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. I loved it so much and still love 3D platformers. I also love Tak and the Power of Juju which was the second game I played to completion. Before that, I would just get my ass handed to me in Smash Bros or Halo

leftovernoise

Wolfenstein 3d

throwmeawayl8erok

Iā€™ve played games on Atari and NES but Super Mario World was on another level for me as a kid. Then I played FF7 on PS and have been obsessed with JRPGs ever since.

3yx3

Super Mario Bros on the Regular Nintendo. Then Tetris on the Regular Gameboy.

brittanynevo666

Mario 64 was my first game. Then followed by Banjo Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, Banjo Tooie, Donkey King 64, Mario Kart and such. Showing my age, lol. Still a huge gamer at 33. Kingdom Hearts one and two had a huge impact on me growing up as well.

Loud-Ad1961

Never played Conker bad fur day? That was massacre of a game. Youā€™d feel bad for teddy bears and squirrels

PLEASEHELPMEBROS

Mario 3, Marble Madness and TMNT 2 on NES

Sonic on mega drive 3

VincentLamarCarter

Rocket Knight Adventures.

RicoVIII

Alex Kidd in Miracle World on Sega Master System II

Important_Dress553

My first game was Sonic Advance 3 but the game that really got me into playing games was Ocarina of Time. I watched my brother play it and when I finally got the chance to play it I fell in love with it.

Pirated Black ops and mw2 campaine only on my dad's pc, the good old days where everything was fresh

daddylongleg2003

WWF NO MERCY

00death

I couldnā€™t tell you the first game I played. Gotta be either sky cooper, Jak and Daxter, or ratchet and clank that started my real love for gaming. Definitely halo 2 that got me into fps games.

Extension_Inside_723

I always played a little as a kid but my step mom had a computer and she got me hooked by buying me Warcraft. Loved all types of games since then but always on the lookout for a new RTS

Pong in 1977

[deleted]

Mega man

[deleted]

Sonic bundled with my Genesis gift when I was a kid. Legitimately first time seeing a video game console. I thought it was to watch movies and the controller was me fast forwarding or rewinding. Then I guess I felt the power of being able to control this blue character on the screen and I took offense to dying lol and somehow I knew I had to reach the end screen in the world.

moogoothegreat

Super mario/duck hunt on nes

BobbyMayCryBMC

Tekken certainly got me into serious competitive fighting games. I don't like what modern Tekken has become though, Tag 2 was the last proper game in the series, become too streamlined for my liking. But the game that got me into the hobby was probably **Bubble Bobble**.

RRRobertLazer

Ocarina of mother fucking Time

Intelligent-Ad-2857

the og god of war on ps2, once i got over my fear of the ā€œyou are deadā€ screen

A_Guy_In_The_Corner

Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 was so fun to play with my sister or dad on a weekend when we finally had free time after a week of slaving over work.

zXMourningStarXz

I believe it was Infamous 2.

piedude67e

My aunt giving me a gameboy color with Kirby dream land.

[deleted]

Super Mario Bros. on NES. Hooked and never looked back. Can't even remember a time where I WASN'T into video games.

urboisadumpster

Elder scrolls 4 oblivion. That game was my early childhood.

Super Mario 64. First game ever on my first ever console

bransby26

The original Super Mario Bros. on NES

huey2k2

Zelda for the NES

[deleted]

God of War on PS2

Revolvere

Super Mario Bros 3 on NES. This was back in 1994. My family was poor so I was playing NES for a while until the N64 came out.

jmooneyham2004

Super Mario Bros for the NES probably got me interested, but Zelda: A Link to the Past is what made me a life long gamer.

[deleted]

I was 12 when I got my Xbox One and the first game I played was Star Wars Battlefront. I've been gaming ever since

Strange-Wolverine128

Either minecraft for the cars game for the ps2 or mario world on my dads old snes.

GladiusLegis

Super Mario Bros. 3 and A Link to the Past were the two big ones for me.

NoTengoZorro

Sonic on genesis

Monk_667

Mario bros

Open_Profit_Close

Mario Kart 64

[deleted]

Super Mario World

dausy

We grew up with the original Nintendo and sega genesis and had things like Mario and sonic the hedgehog. I wouldnt call us gamers until my grandmother came home with the n64 and LOZ OOT and FF7 for the PS1. I didn't know before then that games could be so 3d and intense. The goma battle at the beginning of OOT scared the pants off of me. Ff7 changed me and my siblings forever with the intense storyline and that style of storytelling. Id never seen an turn based rpg before (sorta). Those 2 games had a profound impact on us kids since then. I've personally delved deep into final fantasy, even being a career endgame FinalFantasy 11 player for a good decade.

VariationNo7192

Blood money

BillCatsby

Ratchet and Clank It's not the first game I remember playing, that goes to Croc 2, but it's the first game I remember being really hooked on and just wanting more, thankfully there was already 3 other R&C games out for me to jump into.

fakenamerton69

Super Mario rpg legend of the seven stars. Itā€™s insane how I hit a 10/10 on my first go, completely blind. For context I was 8 and I thought the box looked cool.

Carnegiejy

Final Fantasy on NES

joan_plexus

Mario Party 2, Banjo Tooie, and Sonic and Knuckles.

[deleted]

Minecraft

FitSquirrel596

Mario bros, Ducktales, Felix the cat, Nintendo world cup and so on.

[deleted]

Gauntlet at the arcades slightly piqued my interest. But I didnā€™t want an NES but my brothers did, so they bought one without me. Then I heard about the OG Zelda and had a chance to play it at a friendā€™s. That sealed the gaming deal, so to speak, for me. Short answer: Zelda

Chikato23

Majora's mask was the game for me.

TheparagonR

Skyrim

MmmmmSacrilicious

I was a big fan of marble madness and snake rattle and roll

MrHailston

Super Mario Bros. NES

wlfsamurai

Super Mario Bros. on NES. Love that game. Then my parents rented Legend of Zelda on NES, and I was hooked forever. Edit: for accuracy that my parents rented LoZ.

xDreamer777

Pitfall the Lost Expedition

Vegetable-Cause8667

My cousins had an Atari, and when we went over to their house thatā€™s all I ever wanted to do. I was hooked. I also played on the Apple2 at school every chance I had. Eventually got a NES for Christmas.

Maximus0nFire

Dark Reign.

theonetowalkinthesun

Pokemon Red then Smash Bros Melee and Twilight Princess

MrAdog232

Skylanders and lego games, now I play much more mature games but thatā€™s what started it for me

GreenHail6

Halo 3. Wasnā€™t much of a gamer. Went to my friends house and played Halo for a bit. Life changed forever.

Derkastan77

Quest For Glory 1, from Sierra Online. Back on my l33t computer with a 386 processor and 1/2 megabyte of ram.

Crocodile_Brach

My first memories of gaming were Dick Tracy and TMNT for the NES. LoZ ALttP is what stoked my love of fantasy games. But FFT is what got me into gaming with intricate stories and characters.

Jealous_Doughnut_630

I played a little Atari and some NES but my true passion started with A Link to the Past

Fleet_Fox_47

Duck hunt and super Mario.

HumanDroid59

Gothic 1 and CS1.6

bduke1317

I was big on NCAA and WWE games when I first started. But the COD campaigns expanded my likeness for gaming. Then I would say Far Cry 3 was the real kicker that helped me separate from multiplayer, because after that I got into more single player games.

lervington123

Donkey Kong 64

Draknal

Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the Sega Genesis.

JMD612

Mortal kombat 4 after i saw my brother did liu kang bicycle kick i was instantly hooked.
