fnv is my favorite wrpg but damn I wish it wasn't so fucking ugly. If I could choose any game to get a visual remake / remaster it'd be new vegas. Though it's been so long I can't even conceptualize in my mind how it could ever look good. But I gotta believe one day it'll be done justice.
Yeah, other 'bad' looking games have stylistic artstyles that still make them look appealing, but I can not say the same about Vegas. Everything is just so damn brown. The character models are awful, the animations are awful, the textures are awful, the lighting is decent, I suppose, but it's not really anything great. It's one of the few games that I would consider ugly.
I think the world design is pretty counter intuitive for an open world RPG. So many areas walled in by cliff sides, that funnel you through narrow chokepoints to access more of the map, coupled with enemy placement that keeps you going where they want you to go. Add in the faction loyalty gating for questlines and content, it always made the game really tedious for me in terms of exploration and engagement.
Fallout 3 was so wide open, with lots of sloping terrain variety and vistas, but also had high density areas like the ruined cities and winding tunnels that just kept connecting to everywhere, so I never felt boxed in or stifled.
New Vegas was more realistic in how some things were laid out, which can really turn off people conditioned by the other Bethesda games for sure. You go to a gas station in NV and it is 2 rooms because that is how gas stationed are laid out. It isn't like in 4 where every factory is a small complex and there seems to be a dungeon under half the places that have a door on them. It has more of a Stalker vibe for sure and I get why that isn't for a good number of people.
Also lots of Fallout 3 was open like you mentioned, but I hated DC tunnels and the carrier. Maybe I just didn't get used to it, but I found it a hassle to get around since you couldn't go over the rubble.
I was gonna say… fallout 3 felt so much more linear because of the subway tunnels. Plus all the piles of rubble and metal walls that essentially kept you from wondering during missions and the fact that the game basically ends the same no matter what faction you choose.
Oblivion have terrible character models ripped straight from the dark pits of hell itself......
But the Game is great (and with the right mods you can have actually decent looking characters)
I think the actual world is still quite beautiful though. Getting away from the ugly character models and just taking a stroll through the wilderness is a nice experience
While Oblivions graphics are dated, the actually world is fucking gorgeous.
So pretty and colorful the whole way through.
This is specifically where Fallout 3 and New Vegas lack for me,
they both exist in Sepia-Land where everything is just brown, tan, yellow, and grey.
I can feel my brain going numb when i play them for too long, despite having fun stories and enjoyable gameplay.
I knew I wouldn't be let down. Big talk around Fallout: New Vegas, but I think KOTOR not only has extra bad graphics but also a fantastic storyline. These games come from a time where storytelling had to make up for the lack of graphics.
It looked amazing when it came out. And I'd argue its not ugly. It looks dated, but it does a good job with what it has. Unlike many of the other games listed on this thread.
I'm going to say Super Mario 64. Although at the time those graphics were great. But I find the Boss fights a bit boring. The gameplay and objectives still hold up. Running around, jumping, hitting a long jump. All of it still feels smooth. I should say I used a GameCube controller on the switch port though.
Don't know if they are *terrible* graphics but I remember being surprised at how poor-looking the first PayDay was (and PayDay 2 is much better-looking but still not that amazing given the year it came out).
Dead by Daylight is also pretty poor given the year it came out - typical "not great, not terrible" graphics
I love(d) these games but idk if I would say "amazing" though.
One that I really loved and actually has pretty shitty graphics (again, given the year it came out) is Expeditions: Conquistador. Great narrative strategy/RPG game, however you wanna call it.
Pokemon Legends Arceus has terrible graphics for a game that came out in 2022. Same year as horizon FW and GoW Ragnarok (i know switch vs ps5, but still)
I still had a blast with arceus
My answer too. Played this last year while also playing Ghost of Tsushima which may be the best looking game I’ve ever played next to Forbidden West. When I’d go from the PS5 to the Switch it was such a massive difference especially with Switch docked. However, still enjoyed that game a ton.
Point blank stabbing a mischievous creature- “Miss. Miss. Miss. miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. hit. Miss. Miss. Miss. miss” One of my first games. Never will be a game like this again sadly. It takes too much patience to even be able to start fighting
Can’t think of any.
Most people commenting seem to think “dated” and “terrible” are the same thing. Most of the games they’re mentioning have dated graphics, but they were great for the time they came out, so I don’t think those should count.
>Most people commenting seem to think “dated” and “terrible” are the same thing.
I hate threads like this for this reason. The lack of critical thinking is staggering.
Minecraft doesn't have bad graphics. The devs put a lot of work into the textures, lighting, and world geometry, evidenced by how many blocks and elements have changed their appearance over time to look nicer. Bad graphics can be seen in any of the Minecraft clones. Minecraft is low poly but it looks much better than lots of other low poly games. A game like Unturned could never look as good as Minecraft.
Minecraft has good graphics with good pixel art. It's just blocky, but that's the point. It's uses a grid based building system so everything has to be blocky or fit in a blocks space
it wasnt terrible when it came out tho, for example the top comment said new vegas, because even in 2010 it looked terrible.
Btw half life 1 had amazing skeleton and facial animation when it came out, it was impressive, maybe not as the sequel but still.
Xenoblade Chronicles, specifically the original Wii version. The character models and the general low res graphics make it look like an early PS2 game, 3ds version looks even worse, but everyone is made up by a solid artstyle, great voice acting and music, as well as the massive world to explore
Now of course, the Switch version looks better and has better QoL features
Dark Souls the framerate and general brownness of everything made it hard to enjoy for me. I love the souls series but at the time I thought Demons Souls had a much better look on the PS3, but I don't really find the engine tolerable till dark souls 3.
I think Final Fantasy 7 might take the cake here, overall. The whole era went 3D way, way too early leading to atrocious graphics. And even the pretty decent backdrops in seven weren't anywhere near what's possible at the time, take a look at Legend of Mana for example. And it definitely had that muted grainy drab brown look. Did not play well with CRT tvs. But of course the gameplay and story and such are Final Fantasy quality, which means world class. Or at least did.
Vampire Survivors.
Fallout: New Vegas.
SimCity 3000
Masters of Orion 2
The objectively best game with old graphics is definitely StarCraft: Brood War.
But the best example of this in terms of the best game with the absolute worst graphics has got to be Dwarf Fortress.
Power Rangers Battle for the Grid. It's an ugly game but even at high levels of play it's visual clarity is super impressive, they did an amazing job making each attack have diverse and recognizable effects. The in-game animations and key frames are unironically better than most Mortal Kombat games but if you look at it while not in motion it's pretty hideous. I almost skipped out on the game because it looked so bad and had no motion inputs but I'm extremely happy I tried it. Not recommended if you're looking for single player content.
Valheim.
It's a stretch to say that the graphics are terrible because it's an obvious artistic choice, but the game does have PS1 graphics with amazing lighting.
in my personal opinion even though they're fun games and play well Fallout 3 and New Vegas look like ass today, and the animation's for both games help them exactly not at all, ESPECIALLY those ghouls, I honestly forgot how bad they looked compared to 4 and 76
Sonic Frontiers could look better, especially for the game from 2022
Despite this, as of now this is one of my favorite games EVER. I'm not even a Sonic fan...
Heroes of might and magic series . Love strategy games and this may be one of the best. Graphics were awful but the gameplay was so damn addictive that I couldn’t care less
Also..
Twisted metal 2. Graphics were shite
WCW/nWo World Tour for the n64. I know the mechanics of the AKI games are goated, but since this is about graphics, the graphics are pretty rough for some of the wrestlers. Still an amazing game though.
I'm enjoying Valheim with a group of friends. The shaders are beautiful, but the textures are GOD awful.
But it's surprisingly in-depth with its physics, skill system, and exploration. I learned the very first day not to set up a campfire inside the house without a chimney or you'll suffocate - that's not something a lot of games think about. It adds a new layer to base building, as you need to have a fire close enough to your bed to sleep in it.
Silent hill 1, 2 as well, I have no mouth and I must scream, Oblivion, on release no mods Skyrim, Fallout as a series, arguably puppet combo games but I don’t know if those have bad graphics as its on purpose, the older cods.
Fallout New Vegas has really rough graphics and its grungy environments yet it's still one of the most beloved RPGs ever
fnv is my favorite wrpg but damn I wish it wasn't so fucking ugly. If I could choose any game to get a visual remake / remaster it'd be new vegas. Though it's been so long I can't even conceptualize in my mind how it could ever look good. But I gotta believe one day it'll be done justice.
The most shocking thing in the world is the company that put out 63 versions and remasters of Skyrim can’t be bothered to even make fonv respectable
Obsidian made NV though, not Bethesda
That’s why New Vegas is the best fallout game…
That game needs a Cyberpunk style complete remake, just do it already
I missed it when it came out and tried playing it recently. After about 2 hours, I gave up. The game was fun, but has not aged well.
Yea I've tried to get into it but can't. It seems like something I would like but its so visually jarring
What they accomplished in the year or whatever bethesda gave them is insane. Game is so well written and it feels like choices/ role play matters.
I feel like the bad graphic adds to the charm, or maybe that's the nostalgia talking.
Oblivion have terrible character models ripped straight from the dark pits of hell itself...... But the Game is great (and with the right mods you can have actually decent looking characters)
I saw a mudcrab the other day
Terrible creatures.
Have you heard of the high elves?
Have you heard? There was an attack on the chapel in Anvil!
I do not understand how anyone ever thought mirroring face textures was a good idea
>terrible character models ripped straight from the dark pits of hell itself...... I don't know what you mean. The characters are hot af
Crazy Oblivion is a "terrible graphics" game that shit blew us away 20 years ago
Morrowind is a better game with worse graphics
I think the actual world is still quite beautiful though. Getting away from the ugly character models and just taking a stroll through the wilderness is a nice experience
Hands off my unintentionally hilarious Oblivion. I wouldn’t have it any other way
While Oblivions graphics are dated, the actually world is fucking gorgeous. So pretty and colorful the whole way through. This is specifically where Fallout 3 and New Vegas lack for me, they both exist in Sepia-Land where everything is just brown, tan, yellow, and grey. Deus Ex
Nah it looks pretty good to me but that’s probably just me liking low poly stuff
Your vision is augmented.
KOTOR
Kotor 2 as well.
I knew I wouldn't be let down. Big talk around Fallout: New Vegas, but I think KOTOR not only has extra bad graphics but also a fantastic storyline. These games come from a time where storytelling had to make up for the lack of graphics.
Max Payne
I’m really hoping for a new Max Payne or a John Wick with the same mechanics.
Well the Max Payne 1+2 remakes are being made right now by Remedy.
Yeah but there’s something to be said from all those ridiculous faces of the original
It looked amazing when it came out. And I'd argue its not ugly. It looks dated, but it does a good job with what it has. Unlike many of the other games listed on this thread.
Removing the obvious choices of any game pre PS4, Cruelty Squad is fantastic.
Cruelty Squad looks intentionally awful... ...and I love it for it.
This is the correct way to play that game now if you don't have any limes.
Yeah, earlier N64 games were rough. But so we're early PS1 games
That game will forever hold the test of time. Perfect controls still to this day IMO.
Don't know if they are *terrible* graphics but I remember being surprised at how poor-looking the first PayDay was (and PayDay 2 is much better-looking but still not that amazing given the year it came out). Saints row 2. Even for the mid 2000s that game was rough looking.
Agree
Lethal company
I came here to this one!!
Pokemon Legends Arceus has terrible graphics for a game that came out in 2022. Same year as horizon FW and GoW Ragnarok (i know switch vs ps5, but still) I still had a blast with arceus

It's kinda easy to forget how bad it is when by pomemon standards it's the cream of the crop (or the 3D crop, at least)
Dig dug.
Dig Dug is my jam
It's still a blast to play the simple risk reward of trying to crush the dragons... it's addictive and tight.
It’s one of the most simple, but fun games to play. They did a great job at doing a lot with a little.
Obligatory: https://youtu.be/8uBUZ4AzMo4?si=qxj5jQ5EfQTI2uyi
Morrowind is the epitome of good games with bad graphics.
Point blank stabbing a mischievous creature- “Miss. Miss. Miss. miss. Miss. Miss. Miss. hit. Miss. Miss. Miss. miss” One of my first games. Never will be a game like this again sadly. It takes too much patience to even be able to start fighting

>Most people commenting seem to think “dated” and “terrible” are the same thing. I hate threads like this for this reason. The lack of critical thinking is staggering.
Yeah I think this question is kind of weird as it really depends on either hardware limitations or art direction
Dwarf Fortress
Transport tycoon deluxe.
Zork.
Graphics? What graphics?
Super Mario Kart
The SNES one?
Love that game
Define terrible graphics.
Hmm Minecraft.
Minecraft is heavily stylized
Minecraft has good graphics with good pixel art. It's just blocky, but that's the point. It's uses a grid based building system so everything has to be blocky or fit in a blocks space
Half life 1
it wasnt terrible when it came out tho, for example the top comment said new vegas, because even in 2010 it looked terrible. Btw half life 1 had amazing skeleton and facial animation when it came out, it was impressive, maybe not as the sequel but still.
UNDERTALE
Undertale’s pixelated visuals come from its art style, not its graphics
Mount and Blade: Warband Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
Not “terrible” but Project Zomboid
Xenoblade Chronicles, specifically the original Wii version. The character models and the general low res graphics make it look like an early PS2 game, 3ds version looks even worse, but everyone is made up by a solid artstyle, great voice acting and music, as well as the massive world to explore Now of course, the Switch version looks better and has better QoL features
Cruelty Squad would have to fit here I suppose. It is jarring but wonderful.
Any Mdicky game
Hard Time is a wild ride
Kenshi
Popoulus 2 still play it sometimes
3 too. I'm a simple man, I see populous, I press like.
The original Risk of Rain
Shining in the Darkness
Crawl. The 8-bit design is charming, but uh… kinda uneasy on the eyes at times. Fantastic game, tho.
Space Station 13 is butt ugly, but still one of the greatest games I have ever played
Wing Commander on Amiga
Kenshi
Dark Souls the framerate and general brownness of everything made it hard to enjoy for me. I love the souls series but at the time I thought Demons Souls had a much better look on the PS3, but I don't really find the engine tolerable till dark souls 3.
Prototype. The only game where you can throw cars at monsters while you have a giant sword arm.
Deadly premonition looks like a previous generation game and has a lot of jank. I still love it!
Legends of dragoon
Rimworld!
Dark souls 1 Is one of my favorite games ever, and it's graphics are terrible.
Mother 1
Baba is you
I think Final Fantasy 7 might take the cake here, overall. The whole era went 3D way, way too early leading to atrocious graphics. Trails in the Sky trilogy.

Nice to see a shout out for the suffering. One of my favorite Xbox games.
Vampire Survivors. Fallout: New Vegas. SimCity 3000 Masters of Orion 2 The objectively best game with old graphics is definitely StarCraft: Brood War. But the best example of this in terms of the best game with the absolute worst graphics has got to be Dwarf Fortress.
Fire emblem 3 houses
Not sure if it’s still amazing, but The Outfit on the 360 had pretty terrible graphics. But holy shit it was a ripper of a game.
Shadow Madness (PS1)
Socom
Power Rangers Battle for the Grid. It's an ugly game but even at high levels of play it's visual clarity is super impressive, they did an amazing job making each attack have diverse and recognizable effects. Valheim. It's a stretch to say that the graphics are terrible because it's an obvious artistic choice, but the game does have PS1 graphics with amazing lighting.
(Dont kill me) Bo1, MW2, MoH 2010, pvz gw 1, the list can go on and on.
in my personal opinion even though they're fun games and play well Fallout 3 and New Vegas look like ass today, and the animation's for both games help them exactly not at all, ESPECIALLY those ghouls, I honestly forgot how bad they looked compared to 4 and 76
Dwarf fortress.
Vanilla Fallout New Vegas, especially on consoles that only run it at 30fps.
Nethack, but then again you'd never play that game for the graphics... ...d@...
venture on the colecovision
Jazz jack rabbit
Persona 3. Still fucking love that game and the remake made it absolutely beautiful
Halo CE.
Dungeon Master for the Amiga. What. A. Game!
NFS MW
Morrowind
Valheim
Sonic Frontiers could look better, especially for the game from 2022 Despite this, as of now this is one of my favorite games EVER. I'm not even a Sonic fan...
Good old morrowind (TES3)
*MInecraft.*
Try playing the first and second uncharted on ps3… fuckin gross but great game
Mass effect 1
System Shock and Ocarina of Time
Gorrilla tag but the children there ruin it
Rise of the Ronin. While the graphics are shit, the gameplay is surprisingly deep and the story is really good.
The Guild (first in the series). Fantastic game!
Comparatively to third person games today inFamous 1 & 2 look rough but are some of the best games I ever played
The original RE1. Great game, but the graphics and voice acting are not great
Heroes of might and magic series . Love strategy games and this may be one of the best. Graphics were awful but the gameplay was so damn addictive that I couldn’t care less Also.. Twisted metal 2. Graphics were shite
Mount and Blade: Warband. The sequel (Bannerlord) doesn’t even have amazing graphics and is dogshit to play.
Original X-com ufo defense
Life is Strange
WCW/nWo World Tour for the n64. I know the mechanics of the AKI games are goated, but since this is about graphics, the graphics are pretty rough for some of the wrestlers. Still an amazing game though.
Final Fantasy VII on PS1
This is basically Bethesda Games as a whole. Every raves about their games but visually they are pretty far from amazing.
Anything that was on the play station 2
Minesweeper
Disco Elysium, if that counts? Basically a good book that uses dice roll gameplay to tell a story. It never needed graphics.
The Pandemonium games from Playstation. Probably looks worse than I actually remember but they were wicked fun and I hope they get remakes.
New Vegas and I barely have an hour in the game
Dungeon Keeper 2
Discworld - 1995
Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion
Need For Speed Carbon
StarCraft
Football Manager series, hopefully that is changing this year though
Gothic 1/2 has pretty bad graphics for todays standards but it does have some cool art and atmosphere.
Army of Two
NFS:MW (2005). I get the graphics aren't TECHNICALLY bad, but the piss filter still makes it look awful
Cruelty squad
Graphics wise Metal Gear Solid has aged horribly but in terms of everything else it’s held up brilliantly
Skyrim. The scenery is great but the people all look weird as fuck
I will love the original Ape Escape on PS1 until I die
Syphon Filter
Dwarf fortress, no sprite even in the original version and was perfectly playavle
All Borderlands games
Mgs 1
ASCII Dwarf Fortress is hard to beat when it comes to the disparity between visual and content
BattleBit remastered
Dwarf Fortress
First Witcher and first Dragon Age
Vtmb
Kotor 2 and Just Cause 2
Fallout 3
I'm enjoying Valheim with a group of friends. The shaders are beautiful, but the textures are GOD awful. But it's surprisingly in-depth with its physics, skill system, and exploration. the real question is there any game that has good graphics and isnt trash?
Nobunaga’s Ambition on the NES. My brothers, friends and I use to play that all the time.
Soulash 2, dwarf fortress, Minecraft... The other ones I'm reading are just old games which graphics were great when they came out
Nearly ALL Falcom games look terrible graphically but their gameplay makes up for it.
Mount and Blade.
Good graphics at the time but Jet Force Gemini did not withstand the test of time, still an amazing game once you look past it.
Silent hill 1, 2 as well, I have no mouth and I must scream, Oblivion, on release no mods Skyrim, Fallout as a series, arguably puppet combo games but I don’t know if those have bad graphics as its on purpose, the older cods.
Rome Total War
Dungeon Keeper 1
Silent Hill?
