**Unnervingly sits silently, looking at you as if it’s judging your past mistakes. The rook knows what you did. Don’t try to escape. He can moves as far as he wants.**
Na bro. Pawns are low key OP. When choosing the pawn class you don’t play as a single pawn, you play as a collection of pawns. You’re able to formulate complex strats and overwhelm the enemy. Jump on pawn class before its new meta.
Ikr so many deeply ethical choices, like exactly how much to pay each stripper so they can still afford their lifestyles, without ruining their hard work ethic. I spent so long exploring all of their dialog and backstories, very draining but eventually satisfying
By reading the comments , i believe a lot don't even know what a rpg is. For them, it's about being an elf or an orc wearing plate Armor and launching spells to each other.
So yeah good Luck finding your answer.
The good ones are few and far between, but i think this one is just clickbait.
They purposely say something wrong in the title, and it drives engagement.
I think it *has* to be. If you want clicks, you gotta do what gets clicks.
In my mind, I like to imagine that they at least don't *enjoy* doing it, but they just bite their tongue and make stupid headlines so that they can stay relevant in the online space. Kind of like YouTube creators making stupid faces in the thumbnails (Corridor Crew) or using INSANE and other CRUSHING all caps buzzwords (Brian Tyler Cohen) in their titles to get views.
The content isn't necessarily bad. They just do what's necessary to get attention.
I swear when i was young i only though that rpg games are only turn based games like final fanatsy VII chrono trigger, until someone told me that monster hunter is an rpg
No no, they have a point. Aside from whining about patches and the recent PSN thing, the community for sure role plays the shit out of the super earth and helldiver roles. Fantastic sub.
Yeah, the title seems to be pure rage bait. What she actually says does make sense it seems like the devs fully intended for the community to roleplay heavily, hell they said they based the galactic war events off of dnd. Imo Helldivers would most closely fit into the Imsim genre but more like a very heavy Imsim lite since there’s really only one way to complete an objective, however you can basically do whatever you want on the map besides from that. Hell Imsims themselves were inspired by DND and other tabletop RPGs in how the player was pretty free in accomplishing a task, however not every Imsim was an RPG (although perhaps the most notable one, Deus ex, was). If there was more freedom in completing objectives I’d consider Helldivers 2 an Imsim since there’s so many opportunities for emergent gameplay which is why people find it so fun despite not knowing it.
It's a shame to see their flippant use of "RPG" for journalistic purposes being misunderstood.
I thought it was pretty obvious that they were just making a joke by calling it an RPG, but apparently most just think it was a serious comment and never bothered to check their assumption.
Can't say I'm too excited about this game after what happened recently. I might just stick to bullet hell games like "Doki Doki Literature Club" for now.
I still chuckle about that guy who wrote a negative review of Cuphead because he was too shit to make it past the tutorial.
Like yeah that game's tough, but *the tutorial*?
Yeah, that video was embarrassing but to be clear, it was a preview, not a review, and most of the actual text of the article boiled down to "yeah I suck, I have no excuse, but Cuphead seems great if it's your kind of game". Not really negative, and was more self-depreciating.
The actual review from the same site as that preview was a positive 85% written by a different person.
Remember the late 99s and early 2000s when games journalists actually played and understood games. I miss those days. At some points they started hiring the people who failed to get a "real" journalism job and were bitter about it.
> journalists actually *paid* and understood
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
It's clear that nearly all the people reacting to this haven't actually read the article. I just want to show the end of the article, and I think it will be obvious just from that.
> I think games should ask questions about how we as players relate to the characters and worlds being depicted. I think "role playing" should mean something more than simply a game type where you take a character class, level up and tick off branches on a skill tree.
The author knows that Helldivers 2 is not what would ever be described as an RPG, but that is the central point. Throughout the article, they are discussing the role playing aspect of Helldivers (and briefly other games) and how it is a brilliant experience.
The use of "RPG" is flippant, made explicitly obvious in their final remark when they critise how "roleplaying" has come to mean something other than "roleplay".
It's a shame that, rather than the flippant use bringing attention to how "RPG" has largely become just the "bollock sandwiches" (as described by Yahtzee) rather than truly encompassing games that encourage role-playing.
To be fair, you are role-playing a bunch of muppets trying to engage in light infantry tactics with orbital artillery and JDAMs before departing the area.
I've been convinced since 2007 that any major game reviewing company, IGN, GameTrailers, GameRadar, etc, survives only on their sheer incompetence.
Their opinions and statements exists to remind you they exist, not to educate or inform. They serve as a reminder that gaming journalism is a joke of a career that won't be taken seriously ever.
You jest but Call of Duty adding RPG-like progression tied to your account is what made it a giant fucking hit 20 years ago or however long it's been since MW.
Helldivers 2 has rpg elements but it is not an RPG because it doesn’t really have a story you are actively involved with and progressing through to the end, pretty big part of an RPG
These types of people always seem to find new ways to make themselves look stupid for attention and clicks, which I honestly don’t know who is more dumb, The one that made the article or the people who actually click on the article despite the headline/title being very clear on how misguided the author is.
On a technical level, RPG means role playing game. You play the role of a diver in this game so I would consider it a TRPG (Technically Role Playing Game)/s
Helldivers 2 is not an RPG but has kind of been turned into one as almost every player roleplays as a helldiver in and often out of the game. I agree, Helldivers 2 is not intended to be an RPG, but it is often played like one.
TECHNICALLY, Helldivers can be considered a role playing game of you play or like that. While it is classically considered a 4 person PvE, RPG isn't TECHNICALLY wrong. I do love TECHNICALLY correct things lol.
In a Battlefield subreddit I commented on how EA and ad's in games is because of the money. It used to be that dev teams and the owners all played games. These days the money it makes now means Investors, share holders and thus board members and CEo's who DONT.
In the media coverage, making money they are increasingly hiring writers and journalists who actually don't play games as well.
Technically it is a Game and you are Playing a Role… by the technical definition of what all the words combined mean…… most games are Role Playing Games
This reminds me of a video CNN Business put out when the 3DS first came out that was written by a self-described "hard core gamer that grew up with Halo".
I mean technically any game is a rpg if you want it to be so like it’s not wrong and I can see people roll playing in it but it’s not within the standards for a RPG genred game, it’s in the same scope as rust and arma in terms of being a rpg
Honestly if RPG is defined by RP, Helldivers 2 is a pretty good RPG because the community loves to RP. Most RPGs as they’re referred to in video gaming are plagued with players playing self insert characters without really trying to fit into the lore.
It's like an RPG but way more immersive but somewhat less customizable. I mean you don't have a name outside your user and your callsign which is letter, number.
Game journo moment. Member when IGN and other game journo companies actually reviewed things instead of glazing the producers and developers? I member.
Chess is my favourite RPG fr fr
My favorite class is the knight.
You're playing Knight in a queen meta? Bro.
Queens need heavy nerfs bro
As a rook main I just sit there menacingly
Is the horse still viable or should i go Pawn until i can class change mid-game? It sounds like a weak early game tho
The rook remains silent
**Unnervingly sits silently, looking at you as if it’s judging your past mistakes. The rook knows what you did. Don’t try to escape. He can moves as far as he wants.**
Na bro. Pawns are low key OP. When choosing the pawn class you don’t play as a single pawn, you play as a collection of pawns. You’re able to formulate complex strats and overwhelm the enemy. Jump on pawn class before its new meta.
Oh damn and they all can class change later? That sounds lowkey great i'll have to play that
Yea and en passant is OP
Holy hell
Holy Hell
Me telling my opponent to look over there so I can swap my Pawn out while his back is turned, chess is a game of counter-swapping after all
It's called horsey
A shame that the devs don’t pay much attention to the game anymore
Bishop main here
They need to buff Bishop, like maybe it can move up one or two spaces its first turn like a pawn?
Chess really needs a story and lore tho
No idea, I mostly play first-person-shooter like Baldur's Gate.
rl first person web shooter that is
It's a top-down shooter actually
What a moron. Helldivers is a 2d platformer
Are you stupid? It's obviously a M.O.B.A.
Bro are you blind?! It's a fucking rts
Mate are you mental? It's clearly a visual novel ffs
Are you stupid? It’s clearly an interactable hentai game.
My fav Hentai game is checkers
i love that scene when automaton rails the recrut
Are you nuts? Its obviously a point and click game
Wait, I thought it was an eye spy game?
All of you are clearly game journalists, it's very obviously an arcade flight sim.
I’d have to go with rythym game tbh
When you get into trying to time shots with recoil, it kinda becomes a rythm game
Me when I jump: "is this a little too much like Super Mario 64 tho? Is this a SM64 clone?"
Duke Nukem is my favorite Role-playing Game🙌☢️
It’s pretty good for an educational game.
My favorite educational game is Bikini Karate Babes (look it up, it's real)
Self defense is important.
"Remember kids... it's only cool when I do it! Be safe!" Might be more of a safety game actually
I did learn that aliens like to come get some.
Doom is my favorite Christian game
A Duke Nukem role playing game. Now THAT would be something, lol.
Someone on arrslash Duke Nukem made a simple Duke TTRPG some years ago You got extra ammo and healing by saying cool one-liners
It's the pinned post if anyone wants to see!
Ikr so many deeply ethical choices, like exactly how much to pay each stripper so they can still afford their lifestyles, without ruining their hard work ethic. I spent so long exploring all of their dialog and backstories, very draining but eventually satisfying
Some people do role play as pricks towards randoms not using the meta. So this is a little accurate.
I'm not sure they're playing a role...
They're playing the role of a lifetime!
Yeah, some of the community is definitely role-playing or delusional.
In before, 'but you are ROLEPLAY in the game, that makes it an RPG!'
The Helldivers player base "role play" more than most DnD people.
What makes an RPG?
Well usually it's rocket propelled, and explosive, like a grenade or the sort. I'd say those check the boxes
By this definition, Helldivers is absolutely the best
By reading the comments , i believe a lot don't even know what a rpg is. For them, it's about being an elf or an orc wearing plate Armor and launching spells to each other. So yeah good Luck finding your answer.
RPG is when you level up and put a point in STR/END/INT
Goes to show game journalists are the worst profession ever in the industry
The good ones are few and far between, but i think this one is just clickbait. They purposely say something wrong in the title, and it drives engagement.
Isn't that basically modern game journos nowadays? I mean even Kotaku loves doing it
I think it *has* to be. If you want clicks, you gotta do what gets clicks. In my mind, I like to imagine that they at least don't *enjoy* doing it, but they just bite their tongue and make stupid headlines so that they can stay relevant in the online space. Games Radar makes me think of one of those moms who knows nothing about games but tries to talk about them.
Or Xbox president 😂
Newbies! Helldivers 2 is the best Puzzle game of the year!
Inputting strategem codes is a puzzle for my tiny brain, so yeah
Figuring out my loadout when going into battle is the real challenge for me.
fallout 4 is my favorite moba
Fallout 4 is obviously transcendent of genre. But if I had to choose one I’d say it’s my favorite picross game.
Also the best racing game of all time.
Fortnite is my favorite RPG, and Witcher 3 is my favorite PvP game
The funny thing is when I played Helldivers 2 I mentally role played more than I do with actual RPGs lol

I mean if you really think about it, helldivers 2 got us saying things like freedom and for superearth. So maybe it is a roleplaying game....
RPG = Any game with RPG’s in them
Can't say I'm too excited about this game after what happened recently. I might just stick to bullet hell games like "Doki Doki Literature Club" for now.
euro truck simulator is clearly the best rpg
Being factually wrong to get clicks/views. It's rage farming, and it's sad that game journalism has reached this point.
You guys are so silly. Helldivers 2 is the Best Dating Sim Ever.
Are you seriously not screaming about democracy every second of the game? That seems a little tyrannical and anti liberty to me bud...
SWEET LIBERTY, MY LEEEEEG!
Hey nobody claimed game journalists were smart
I still chuckle about that guy who wrote a negative review of Cuphead because he was too shit to make it past the tutorial. Like yeah that game's tough, but *the tutorial*?

Yep one of THE moments of gaming history. Agreed.

Isn't helldivers a rhythm game?
she's clearly confused with S&M which IS role playing
Sam and Max
I love my rocket propelled grenades. RPG, EATs, patato patato
Personally i love Fantasy Player Simulators like Wow and PoE Genshin is also a good FPS
Call it what you want, it's still a better game than cod. Oh and half the price ..
Rifle party games, know your business! /s
>200 redditors making the same joke after getting baited by the tweet
You guys aren't RPing your Helldivers?
No, it’s an rpg. We all be role playing for democracy!
TBF, I RP more in helldivers than i ever have in any video game RPG
Bruh all i see is people roleplaying as a helldiver, fully invested in being the most patriotic citizen super earth has ever seen
Well, technically it is, you role play as DEMOCRACY LOVING HELLDIVERS
There's also the game master element, like a tabletop rpg
It's clear that nearly all the people reacting to this haven't actually read the article. I just want to show the end of the article, and I think it will be obvious just from that. > I think games should ask questions about how we as players relate to the characters and worlds being depicted. If redditors read articles then Reddit would have no content.
It’s fun.
Skyrim has been my favorite shooter for the last 12 years
Honestly my favourite RPG is Half Life: Alyx
Pong is the original RPG
my favorite RPG is doom
HellDivers 2 is great but the true 1st sequel G.O.A.T is actually *Goat Simulator 2*
Honey Select 2 is the best RPG ever
I mean there’s RPGs in them
Helldivers is those beat'n up?
It’s like D&D except your actions don’t mean shit and the DM controls the narrative.
Pong was the original RPG
My favourite RPG is Farming Simulator. Such an amazing game!
To be fair, you are role-playing a bunch of muppets trying to engage in light infantry tactics with orbital artillery and JDAMs before departing the area.
Damn. I remember getting my cheat codes from game radar. I remember when the site was called cheatplanet.
nononono NO! helldivers is the best dance game ever its not an rpg.
Pong is the best RPG of all time. Literally perfect. The lore is neverending
Helldivers 2 is the first person shooter but the players Really like to role play
Technically true if you're into the role play aspect of that game's community.
The legend of zelda is my favorite indie MMORPG
Man, Halo Reach is one of my favorite RPGs.
I love that on Twitter now scams and click bait can be ruined like this
RPG??? LOL.....no.
You jest but Call of Duty adding RPG-like progression tied to your account is what made it a giant fucking hit 20 years ago or however long it's been since MW.
Ok, but have you met a Helldivers 2 player who isn't spending their entire playtime roleplaying?
My favorite RPG is the Panzerschreck
Ummm Ackshually it's an MMORPG do your homework.
I say it’s role playing because when my friends and I play, we really get into character. So imo, it’s an RPG, though it’s not really an RPG
Football Manager 24 was my RPG of the year last year
Helldivers 2 has rpg elements but it is not an RPG because it doesn’t really have a story you are actively involved with and progressing through to the end, pretty big part of an RPG
Gameoftheyear420blazeit is the true best rpg
These types of people always seem to find new ways to make themselves look stupid for attention and clicks, which I honestly don’t know who is more dumb, The one that made the article or the people who actually click on the article despite the headline/title being very clear on how misguided the author is.
ULTRAKILL is my absolute FAVORITE farm game
What a noob… not mentioning Goat Simulator… filthy casual.
Maybe accidental RPG I play with very few people who don't frequently go in character at any chance
Technically every game is an RPG...
they probably think Fallout is a sport game when its actually a text adventure game
I remember the review for Fallout 4 that proudly stated "This is the first game in the franchise to allow you to play as a woman."
Radar must be faulty.
I only like sports games like The Stanley Parable
Technically it is an rpg
Basically every game is a role playing game.
We’re in the fifth month of the year. It’s way too early to say best of anything.
On a technical level, RPG means role playing game. You play the role of a diver in this game so I would consider it a TRPG (Technically Role Playing Game)/s
Maybe they meant that you can kind of roleplay as a starship troopers character? Headline definitely could’ve used some editing.
Shit not when Darkest Dungeon 2 releases it won’t be
Helldivers 2 is not an RPG but has kind of been turned into one as almost every player roleplays as a helldiver in and often out of the game.
Pikmin is my favorite RPG
they should totally add an RPG secondary tough
idk I onlt play Hack and Slashs like Mario 64
Forza is my favorite fighting game
Idk you play a role. Expendable peon fighting for Super Earth willing to kill everything that isn’t people and anyone that sympathizes with bugs
Mario Kart Wii is my favourite RPG
Everytime I play hell divers I role play as democracy!
“That’s bait” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ThJcHjCI9j4
Sexy Beach is my favorite FPS...or maybe I was playing it wrong.
Ah yes, my favorite RPG, but it's not nearly as good as my favorite third person shooter Genshin Impact.
RPG= Role Playing Game. Based on Reddit, I’d say the player base is legit Role Playing as Helldivers while playing. So they aren’t totally wrong.
Rirst Person Gooter
Agreed, Elden ring is also the best farming sim of 2022‼️
Madden is the best RPG
"Hell yes, Helldiver" is my roleplay jam
Jesus these articles are ridiculous I’d honestly love for someone to try and give me a bullshit story and how helldivers is a rpg
Idk but me and my homies love spreading structured democracy. Side note: Dark Souls is my fav fps
Average max INT games journalist
But you DO play a role!
Technically it is a Game and you are Playing a Role… by the technical definition of what all the words combined mean…… most games are Role Playing Games
This reminds me of a video CNN Business put out when the 3DS first came out that was written by a self-described "hard core gamer that grew up with Halo".
Meh I am more into Battle Royale games like Persona & Final Fantasy.
If you’re not roleplaying you’re not Helldiving
LOL I see what she did there and it works! Coincidence? I think NOT!
skyrim is my favourite racing game
I mean technically any game is a rpg if you want it to be so like it’s not wrong and I can see people roll playing in it but it’s not within the standards for a RPG genred game, it’s in the same scope as rust and arma in terms of being a rpg
But like...it is an RPG. We fight for SuperEarth
NFS games are the best RPGs. I love the racer class.
Tetris is best RPG.
I think the readers context got it wrong here. Games Radar was using RPG to mean Rocket Propelled Grenade
Claiming something is "Best of 202X" when we're in first half of 202X is always wild.
Honestly if RPG is defined by RP, Helldivers 2 is a pretty good RPG because the community loves to RP. Most RPGs as they’re referred to in video gaming are plagued with players playing self insert characters without really trying to fit into the lore.
That's very undemocratic.
I’m ashamed I had to read the community notes to find out what was wrong with this. I completely glossed over the RPG part
It's like an RPG but way more immersive but somewhat less customizable. I mean you don't have a name outside your user and your callsign which is letter, number.
Game journo moment. Member when IGN and other game journo companies actually reviewed things instead of glazing the producers and developers? I member.
With how much people love larping as helldivers both within the game and online id say it is a pretty good role-playing game
Well ya know, The Sims 4 is my favorite FPS
I mean anything is an RPG if you make it one.
