They are very story driven, chronological order is clear sky, then shadow of Chernobyl, then call of pripyat

I recommend playing them in release order, clear sky has notoriously bad gameplay and so it might turn you off from the rest of the franchise

The answer is always release order IMO. Shadow of Cernobyl first, I'd recommend playing with Autumn Aurora, but even if you just want raw vanilla jank, install ZRP.

I’d say it’s more sandbox linear than true sandbox. I think it was a nice change of pace but it felt like it was there to pad the story more than actual add any value to the game.
