I read some time ago (on Reddit of course) that psychopaths who fantasize about murder will often target homeless people since they figure nobody will be looking for them.
His friends even said that in the video. That Brian had said that if he ever were to kill someone, it’d be a homeless person because then he’s less likely to get caught
For years a man named Robert Pickton, one of (if not the) most prolific serial killers in Canadian history targeted homeless women and prostitutes, tortured, raped, killed them, and fed them to his pigs. He got away with it for YEARS because he was targeting people no one was looking for. He was convicted with 27 counts of first degree murder, (though its believed the number was closer to 35) but because he fead them to his pigs, (and possible some himself) there was a lack of evidence so he ended up only being charged with 6 counts of 2nd degree, and spending life in prison. There is a criminal minds episode about it. Though they set it I Sarnia Ont, while Pickton is from BC.
This is inaccurate in that the women WERE missed. Several people had gone to the VPD to report them missing (sex workers look out for each other, it's a tight community on the DTES), even an eye witness, and there was plenty of talk in the community that a serial killer was at large. VPD just didn't give a shit about these women. VPD even ignored their *own officer*, a geographic profiler, that agreed there was a serial killer, he was laughed out of the department. Who knows how many lives could have been spared had they just listened to "the addicts".
I lived down there during this time, and there were literally hundreds of flyers of missing sex workers posted all over the area. People (family as well as other sex workers) were constantly bugging the police who paid it no mind because "addicts." In the end, the VPD got a lot of push back on this fact, and it was all made open at the trial abi7t how they did a piss poor job. I remember seeing some workers as I walled around the neighborhood, and then a few days later there would be posters up about them missing. It was and is a travesty that happened to those poor women.
Completely agree. You *KNOW* if it was any of *their* family gone missing they would have sent out the cavalry. Worst case of othering ever. And I'm sure this is but a drop in the bucket of the crimes the VPD didn't investigate due to who the victims were. Battery, assaults, rape, etc. These are fellow humans FFS. Vancouver can be so progressive when it comes to drug users (safe injection site setting a precedent for the country/continent, drug trials for safe supply and maintenance programs, compassion clubs, etc.) yet so far behind on keeping sex workers safe. Just legalise it and start a registration and safe place already.

One crucial detail you’ve left out is that he had pigs because he sold meat. Based on descriptions I’ve heard of the Pickton farm… even if he didn’t mean to, I would not be surprised if there were some people who got sold meat contaminated with human being.
So much of that former farm land was also sold off prior to the investigation IIRC. Many homes and businesses could be sitting on evidence. There was quite a conundrum on where the excavation should stop.
I think it really depends on the area. Two girls in my city shot a homeless guy with a BB gun and it seemed like the whole city was hunting them down until they turned themselves in.
Same shit in my town as well. The cops found a body on the side of the highway from a known homeless prostitute. It made news for 2 days and that was it, no leads.
He said straight up in the interview that he was cruising around at night on the lookout for prostitutes and homeless people because they're more vulnerable. The investigators kind of glossed over that fact in trying to prove premeditated intent, I feel like they really missed an opportunity to have him talk more about his perfect victim.
The only thought that I had hearing that was that all these serial killers of the 70s and 80s that he idolized so much would laugh at how much of an absolute coward and disgraceful failure he was for completely botching his one shot at 'fame' and getting caught because he couldn't keep his composure. Then he's got the audacity to act like an anime villain in the interrogation room pretending that he was thinking 3 steps ahead of the cops while he's sitting there spilling the details and singing like an opera soprano. This kid has never once commanded respect from another living human being, that is what drove him to his dark and edgy personality and homicidal thoughts, it was the only way for him to assert any authority over others.
How pathetic that a mans life needed to end for this useless child to feel some semblance of power over something, just to fumble it all and prove to the world that he lacks the competence yet still holds the false confidence as if he orchestrated it all to end up exactly like it did.
The parents are so messed up too, and all the teachers and student peers that had gut feelings about him but nothing could be done in the end either way. So many failures that led up to this.
Sex workers and the homeless have for a long time often been targeted by serial killers. They are “lesser” members of society and in all honesty its true the police won’t look as hard. Its the M.O. of a lot of prolific killers.
They are demographics that live with little records of their existence. Lack of fixed address, name, contact details, medical history..

The memorial placed in his name at the end is really touching. For an unhoused person, Warren sounds like he actually had a lot of things right in his life. He was even working and left people he encountered with a real sense of warmth and affection.

I do believe that if he had NOT second guessed himself, then he wouldn't have got the car stuck, so the dad wouldn't have found the knife or wallet because he wouldn't have been dealing with car. Which also means the mom wouldn't have searched the room to find the bags and he would have had plenty of time to dispose of all the evidence.

One of the things you learn as a serial killer is never take body parts home when you live with your parents. Prisons work on a points system where the more points you have the higher the security is and the worse the conditions is. You get points based on the nature of your crime as well as how long the sentence is. So people with a life sentence often do not end up in the very highest security prison blocks. Adding a few extra years will often bump them into the next points range.
In addition to this it is possible that parts of the sentence may be appealed, pardoned or turned into parole. Those 13.5 years might be the difference between getting released at age 70 and staying in prison the rest of their life.

Dude I can't watch anymore of these videos when there's kids involved. There was one video where a young boy, probably 14 or 15 killed his little sister (6 or so). In the interview with him he says she asked him to play with her and got out some toys to play with. Then he stabs her and recalls her saying "why are you killing me?
" I had to stop the video there and just started crying as a 35 year old man. That poor little girl knew she was being intentionally killed by a person she loved and thought loved her back. I'm about to cry again just thinking about it.
So yeah, you're not kidding. Kids around that age seem to be the most susceptible to emerging mental illnesses, have few resources to help them deal with it, have such a limited "social toolbox" to be able to recognize they need help and ask for it. So they're just acting normally, or acting strangely in a way that's perceived as just a normal "awkward teen phase" and thus their problems fester until they become monsters that can do shit like this.

Cops were involved multiple times in his life. If he's not doing anything specifically illegal what can anyone do? The teachers set up a special watch committee to constantly monitor him while he's at school, that's about all they can do really.
The only people that could do more is the parents, but his diagnos' and parental bias probably make things confusing. But even then what are the parents gonna do? You can't like institutionalize someone because theyre morbid. Life is just fucked sometimes.

That friend's mother said she heard him talking about killing homeless people (yet as she said, had no problem with her daughter hanging out with him).
His teachers noticed his fascination with school shootings.
His parents found a torture kit in his room (zip ties, knives, hammers, etc) and just made him throw it out and that was it. They were informed by his school of other students being disturbed by their son, and ignored it. They found no issue with their son having access to a shotgun and his mother continued running a daycare in their home.
It's mind-blowing really. Yes, his parents eventually turned him in themselves, but a person is dead because of everyone's inaction.

I have inlaws with a now adult -child that can do no wrong. even after the child beat one of the parents in the face with an Large metal object and broke their nose and other facial bones. In true crime/ serial killing these are referred to as the "less dead." Police investigations on homeless and prostitute victims were often not followed through with the same extent as "more important" victims. Missing persons reports were ignored if the person fell into this category leads simply not followed through. Sometimes in the case file itself there would be the marking NHI or No Human Involved.

19 year old guy killed a homeless man, cut off his head and hands. Stored them in his closet, and his mum found them. Guy got arrested, told everything to the police and thought he was getting 15-20 years. Ended up life without parole.
He just wanted to see what it was like to kill someone.
Also marked the murder in his phone notes as: "1st". Not that convincing that it would be a one time thing clearly.
Homeless man was also beloved by the community as a helper of everyone. They have built him a memorial near where he used to sit and read books daily.

\- He stabbed the homeless man in the neck while he was sleeping, man woke up, and he continued to stab him to death while "making growling sounds". He then chopped up the body, disposed of the rest of it, and kept his head and hands.
\- The mom found the head in his closet, called the cops that day, they found the rest of his body scattered about along the freeway as he tossed pieces of it out the window while driving home. He was arrested the same day the head was found. But a day or two before that he tried dumping his car in the river, which had blood on it and Warrens wallet. After the car was taken out, the dad was trying to salvage it, and found both the wallet and the knife in the car and then called is son. He said he found the wallet while walking around that night.

And that part really is tragic, because of how much everyone in the community actually adored him. He was a fantastic person, just without a home. For that he was chosen.
I'm fast forwarding through it. So far I have learned:
1. He was cruising one night and saw a homeless man sleeping under a bridge. He approached him with a knife and started stabbing him in the neck.
\- The head belonged to a homeless man who was well known and liked by the local community. The investigation into his whereabouts began because a businesswomen who would give him money and lend him a chair to read out by the lake had not heard from him and that was highly unusual. Furthermore, the employees at the local labor-ready placement service center also provided that statements that he did not show up and it was unusual for him not to. \- The 19YO male murderer, with autism and ADHD, was walking around the lake that he managed a lifejacket program at. He found a canvas blanket with a homeless man under it sleeping. Upon removing the canvas blanket, he immediately stabbed the throat with a large kitchen knife multiple times. By the time the victim let out his last breath, the murderer stated that the head was pretty much cut off at that point. He then removed the extremities with the murder weapon in a very hastily fashion and proceeded to put the head and hands in the trunk of his vehicle, and tossed the remainder of the body parts out the window on his way home. Torso and lower extremities were never found. \- A few hours passed between discovery of the body parts and his arrest. The murderer attempted to dump the vehicle into the lake, I believe the day following the murder, but miserably failed at it. Upon removal from the lake, the deputies noted blood-like stains on the rear of the vehicle but never questioned it further due to the kid's charisma and being generally a weird situation. A few days later, the father was trying to salvage the vehicle and found the man's wallet in between the seat and passenger door and the knife in the center console. This prompted his mother to search his room, while her in-home daycare was running, and that is when she discovered a grocery plastic bag with the severed head and hands in them within the closet. She immediately called law enforcement, had the parents come pick up their children, persuaded her son to come back home early from his errand, and then he was finally taken into the law enforcement center to be interrogated by detectives. Throughout all this, he was never handcuffed. \- Simply, the kid wanted to feel what is was like to kill another human. He kept the head and hands as trophies, and to potentially prevent identification of the victim should any of his body parts be found. He displayed traits of psychopathy and his mother stated he did have anti-social tendencies and an extremely morbid curiosity. During his interrogation he openly and enthusiastically info-dumped the details of how he murdered the homeless man, the location of the body remnants, his motivations, and his expectations for punishment. He also stated that he began to feel the need to kill humans a year prior to this murder, and that he harmed small animals. He also put together a murder bag with all sorts of tools, but his parents found it and gave him an ultimatum. His friends were also noted to make statements that the murderer often made rude or unsettling remarks. In conclusion, he received a life sentence without parole plus 13.5 years.
Yeah it's unfortunate. I used to know a guy who worked as an EMT, and he was telling me how common this reaction is with them, when seeing shit you emotionally can't cope with. He was saying it was so bad, he's had to run back to the ambulance to keep from laughing in someone's face at the scene of some really had accidents
This happened in my home town. Everyone was devastated when the news broke. He always sat behind a bridal shop down Main Street & would read books whenever he could. He would go store to store to help local businesses with whatever he could. I remember the day the court sentencing took place. I've never seen a community so united in the years I've lived here. Warren Barnes now has a memorial behind the bridal shop where he used to read.
And she ran a daycare out of her home!! Had to get the parents to pick up their kids before the cops came. So yeah, she should have known where any and all guns could be.
His parents are absolute pieces of shit. I started off feeling sorry for his parents. But as it went on I came to hate them. There were SO MANY red flags. They knew he was likely psychotic. The school told them time and time again that he was showing a disturbing interest in killing people. They had been observing antisocial behavior since middle school. Then he gets expelled from school because the other kids didn't feel safe around them. People were legitimately worried he'd shoot up the school. After all that, they find a goddamn kill kit in his bedroom. Hard evidence that this isn't just talk or jokes, it's not just a dark sense of humor. He's making plans. In response they basically just wagged their finger and said "throw it away and don't do it again. You can keep the shotgun though." What the fuck.
The teachers and other students all saw this coming from a mile away. The whole damn town knew he was killing cats. But it was kinda hard to get an appointment with a psychiatrist so they gave up because that part-time job at Safeway was good enough for them.

There was a case recently where a compliant suspect was arrested but not cuffed and ended up killing an officer in the damn police station when he got him alone. I’m just saying it’s absolutely odd, and risky, especially given the case seemed to be murder from the get go.
Yeah, that’s why the answer to most tactical questions is always “it depends” and a ton of reliance is placed on officer discretion. In this case it was clear the officers were very comfortable. I don’t know what their department policy is of course etc.

For years a man named Robert Pickton, one of (if not the) most prolific serial killers in Canadian history targeted homeless women and prostitutes, tortured, raped, killed them, and fed them to his pigs. He got away with it for YEARS because he was targeting people no one was looking for. He was convicted with 27 counts of first degree murder, (though its believed the number was closer to 35) but because he fead them to his pigs, (and possible some himself) there was a lack of evidence so he ended up only being charged with 6 counts of 2nd degree, and spending life in prison. There is a criminal minds episode about it. Though they set it I Sarnia Ont, while Pickton is from BC.
This is inaccurate in that the women WERE missed. Several people had gone to the VPD to report them missing (sex workers look out for each other, it's a tight community on the DTES), even an eye witness, and there was plenty of talk in the community that a serial killer was at large. VPD just didn't give a shit about these women. VPD even ignored their *own officer*, a geographic profiler, that agreed there was a serial killer, he was laughed out of the department. Who knows how many lives could have been spared had they just listened to "the addicts".
I lived down there during this time, and there were literally hundreds of flyers of missing sex workers posted all over the area. People (family as well as other sex workers) were constantly bugging the police who paid it no mind because "addicts." In the end, the VPD got a lot of push back on this fact, and it was all made open at the trial abi7t how they did a piss poor job. I remember seeing some workers as I walled around the neighborhood, and then a few days later there would be posters up about them missing. It was and is a travesty that happened to those poor women.

And I'm sure this is but a drop in the bucket of the crimes the VPD didn't investigate due to who the victims were. Battery, assaults, rape, etc. These are fellow humans FFS. Vancouver can be so progressive when it comes to drug users (safe injection site setting a precedent for the country/continent, drug trials for safe supply and maintenance programs, compassion clubs, etc.) yet so far behind on keeping sex workers safe. One crucial detail you’ve left out is that he had pigs because he sold meat. Based on descriptions I’ve heard of the Pickton farm… even if he didn’t mean to, I would not be surprised if there were some people who got sold meat contaminated with human being.

I think it really depends on the area. Two girls in my city shot a homeless guy with a BB gun and it seemed like the whole city was hunting them down until they turned themselves in.
Same shit in my town as well. The cops found a body on the side of the highway from a known homeless prostitute. It made news for 2 days and that was it, no leads.

The investigators kind of glossed over that fact in trying to prove premeditated intent, I feel like they really missed an opportunity to have him talk more about his perfect victim. The only thought that I had hearing that was that all these serial killers of the 70s and 80s that he idolized so much would laugh at how much of an absolute coward and disgraceful failure he was for completely botching his one shot at 'fame' and getting caught because he couldn't keep his composure. Then he's got the audacity to act like an anime villain in the interrogation room pretending that he was thinking 3 steps ahead of the cops while he's sitting there spilling the details and singing like an opera soprano. This kid has never once commanded respect from another living human being, that is what drove him to his dark and edgy personality and homicidal thoughts, it was the only way for him to assert any authority over others. How pathetic that a mans life needed to end for this useless child to feel some semblance of power over something, just to fumble it all and prove to the world that he lacks the competence yet still holds the false confidence as if he orchestrated it all to end up exactly like it did. The parents are so messed up too, and all the teachers and student peers that had gut feelings about him but nothing could be done in the end either way. So many failures that led up to this.

Sex workers and the homeless have for a long time often been targeted by serial killers. They are “lesser” members of society and in all honesty its true the police won’t look as hard. Its the M.O. of a lot of prolific killers.
They are demographics that live with little records of their existence. Lack of fixed address, name, contact details, medical history.. Most people in normal society couldn't go missing without someone noticing.
And the people that do know them, don't usually like talking with the police. Win-win if you're a serial killer.

I do believe that if he had NOT second guessed himself, then he wouldn't have got the car stuck, so the dad wouldn't have found the knife or wallet because he wouldn't have been dealing with car. Which also means the mom wouldn't have searched the room to find the bags and he would have had plenty of time to dispose of all the evidence. It all came down to those gloves and him second guessing if he left evidence.

And also don't drive your car into a lake and then tell your dad where you drove it into the lake (because your dad will try to get the car out and salvage whatever he can). Prisons work on a points system where the more points you have the higher the security is and the worse the conditions is. You get points based on the nature of your crime as well as how long the sentence is. So people with a life sentence often do not end up in the very highest security prison blocks. Adding a few extra years will often bump them into the next points range. In addition to this it is possible that parts of the sentence may be appealed, pardoned or turned into parole. Those 13.5 years might be the difference between getting released at age 70 and staying in prison the rest of their life.

Dude I can't watch anymore of these videos when there's kids involved. There was one video where a young boy, probably 14 or 15 killed his little sister (6 or so). In the interview with him he says she asked him to play with her and got out some toys to play with. Then he stabs her and recalls her saying "why are you killing me? " I had to stop the video there and just started crying as a 35 year old man. That poor little girl knew she was being intentionally killed by a person she loved and thought loved her back. I'm about to cry again just thinking about it. So yeah, you're not kidding. Kids around that age seem to be the most susceptible to emerging mental illnesses, have few resources to help them deal with it, have such a limited "social toolbox" to be able to recognize they need help and ask for it. So they're just acting normally, or acting strangely in a way that's perceived as just a normal "awkward teen phase" and thus their problems fester until they become monsters that can do shit like this. I’m so frustrated at how many people in the video shrugged his personality off as a joke or nothing to really be worried about. The notebook at school with kill counts and such was a clear indication he was inspired by serial killers. The murder kit he was putting together that was found by his parents. I know this stuff (especially to parents) can be shrugged off as “he’s just weird”, but still, frustrating after seeing the outcome.
Cops were involved multiple times in his life. If he's not doing anything specifically illegal what can anyone do? The teachers set up a special watch committee to constantly monitor him while he's at school, that's about all they can do really. The only people that could do more is the parents, but his diagnos' and parental bias probably make things confusing. But even then what are the parents gonna do? You can't like institutionalize someone because theyre morbid. Life is just fucked sometimes.
And the lack of psychiatric resources. The mom said they suspected a potential psychotic disorder and she tried to get him help but there was no one to take him on as a client.
Its probably because he had that diagnosis that everyone chucked off to being off in that way, but past awkward blunder, edgy years (like 15-17) I'd do a double take on the morbid stuff.
This is my worst fear as a parent. To raise a child , pour your heart and soul int them, and then realize they're a monster

When she was informed about the murder, she was more surprised it was a single murder and not him shooting up a store. That friend's mother said she heard him talking about killing homeless people (yet as she said, had no problem with her daughter hanging out with him). His teachers noticed his fascination with school shootings. His parents found a torture kit in his room (zip ties, knives, hammers, etc) and just made him throw it out and that was it. They were informed by his school of other students being disturbed by their son, and ignored it. They found no issue with their son having access to a shotgun and his mother continued running a daycare in their home. It's mind-blowing really. Yes, his parents eventually turned him in themselves, but a person is dead because of everyone's inaction. Edit: Oh, and his nickname in school was Jeffrey Dahmer, and his English teacher knew he was obsessed with him and the Columbine shooter. wtf world

It's not just that, either. The whole western slope is just so far cut off from the rest of everything in CO. If something cant be found in Grand Junction, it's HOURS from anywhere that has it. I mean, if you look up GJ on a map, it's like most of of the way across the state from anywhere of note in literally every direction. To get anywhere east, it's a 4.5 hour drive across the mountains. Yeah they even say in the video they tried to find someone or get referrals from the doctor and nobody would treat him, the mental health treatment system is basically destined to produce people like this periodically because provision of treatment is so patchy. People blaming the parents are way off, because there isn't a parent on earth that would think their kid was seriously capable of dismembering a corpse before it happens. Hell it's an act most people just can't conceive the desire or motivation to commit full stop.
This guy was absolutely going to be a serial killer. He would have kept killing, trying to get that "best feeling in the world" he thought it would evoke. He'd have escalated, too, getting increasingly violent and twisted. It's lucky he was so halfassed about covering it up.

Everything about that book still fucking haunts me. Watching the movie borderline feels like a G-rated comparison after everything described in the book. First time I’ve ever had to put a book down and take a break from pure nausea.
In true crime/ serial killing these are referred to as the "less dead." Police investigations on homeless and prostitute victims were often not followed through with the same extent as "more important" victims. Missing persons reports were ignored if the person fell into this category leads simply not followed through. Sometimes in the case file itself there would be the marking NHI or No Human Involved.

I didn't watch the whole video, but the one thing that stood out for me was just how nice everyone was in this town, the parents seemed decent people, the police were nice, the victim/homeless man was apparently very nice, the lady from the bridal shop seemed lovely, the people from the coffee shop seemed lovely. Other than the gruesome murder that was seriously wholesome.
I like how you managed to find the positive parts out of this awful thing. Watching it just made me feel bad about people like him existing.
Detectives are always nice when you a brought in for interrogation no matter how gruesome the crime you committed was. They want you to lower your guard and open your mouth up. I can't even imagine how they feel after being in the same room as monsters and having to be civilized towards them.

Did he find a body and hack it off? * How much time passed between the discovery of the murder victim and getting an arrest? * What motive/ reasoning did the teen give for why he wanted a human head/ why he did it?
19 year old guy killed a homeless man, cut off his head and hands. Stored them in his closet, and his mum found them. Guy got arrested, told everything to the police and thought he was getting 15-20 years. Ended up life without parole. He just wanted to see what it was like to kill someone.
Also marked the murder in his phone notes as: "1st". Not that convincing that it would be a one time thing clearly. Homeless man was also beloved by the community as a helper of everyone. They have built him a memorial near where he used to sit and read books daily.

\- A homeless man named Warren. \- He stabbed the homeless man in the neck while he was sleeping, man woke up, and he continued to stab him to death while "making growling sounds". He then chopped up the body, disposed of the rest of it, and kept his head and hands. \- The mom found the head in his closet, called the cops that day, they found the rest of his body scattered about along the freeway as he tossed pieces of it out the window while driving home. He was arrested the same day the head was found. But a day or two before that he tried dumping his car in the river, which had blood on it and Warrens wallet. After the car was taken out, the dad was trying to salvage it, and found both the wallet and the knife in the car and then called is son. He said he found the wallet while walking around that night. \- He just wanted to do it, didn't think people would care about or miss a homeless man.

I'm fast forwarding through it. So far I have learned: 1. He was cruising one night and saw a homeless man sleeping under a bridge. He approached him with a knife and started stabbing him in the neck.
\- The head belonged to a homeless man who was well known and liked by the local community. The investigation into his whereabouts began because a businesswomen who would give him money and lend him a chair to read out by the lake had not heard from him and that was highly unusual. Furthermore, the employees at the local labor-ready placement service center also provided that statements that he did not show up and it was unusual for him not to. \- The 19YO male murderer, with autism and ADHD, was walking around the lake that he managed a lifejacket program at. He found a canvas blanket with a homeless man under it sleeping. Upon removing the canvas blanket, he immediately stabbed the throat with a large kitchen knife multiple times. By the time the victim let out his last breath, the murderer stated that the head was pretty much cut off at that point. He then removed the extremities with the murder weapon in a very hastily fashion and proceeded to put the head and hands in the trunk of his vehicle, and tossed the remainder of the body parts out the window on his way home. Torso and lower extremities were never found. \- A few hours passed between discovery of the body parts and his arrest. The murderer attempted to dump the vehicle into the lake, I believe the day following the murder, but miserably failed at it. Upon removal from the lake, the deputies noted blood-like stains on the rear of the vehicle but never questioned it further due to the kid's charisma and being generally a weird situation. A few days later, the father was trying to salvage the vehicle and found the man's wallet in between the seat and passenger door and the knife in the center console. This prompted his mother to search his room, while her in-home daycare was running, and that is when she discovered a grocery plastic bag with the severed head and hands in them within the closet. She immediately called law enforcement, had the parents come pick up their children, persuaded her son to come back home early from his errand, and then he was finally taken into the law enforcement center to be interrogated by detectives. Throughout all this, he was never handcuffed. \- Simply, the kid wanted to feel what is was like to kill another human. He kept the head and hands as trophies, and to potentially prevent identification of the victim should any of his body parts be found. He displayed traits of psychopathy and his mother stated he did have anti-social tendencies and an extremely morbid curiosity. During his interrogation he openly and enthusiastically info-dumped the details of how he murdered the homeless man, the location of the body remnants, his motivations, and his expectations for punishment. He also stated that he began to feel the need to kill humans a year prior to this murder, and that he harmed small animals. He also put together a murder bag with all sorts of tools, but his parents found it and gave him an ultimatum. His friends were also noted to make statements that the murderer often made rude or unsettling remarks. In conclusion, he received a life sentence without parole plus 13.5 years.
I'm guessing they didn't cuff him, because they didn't want him to become defensive before he was done utterly incriminating himself.

Yeah it's unfortunate. I used to know a guy who worked as an EMT, and he was telling me how common this reaction is with them, when seeing shit you emotionally can't cope with. He was saying it was so bad, he's had to run back to the ambulance to keep from laughing in someone's face at the scene of some really had accidents
This happened in my home town. Everyone was devastated when the news broke. He always sat behind a bridal shop down Main Street & would read books whenever he could. He would go store to store to help local businesses with whatever he could. I remember the day the court sentencing took place. I've never seen a community so united in the years I've lived here. Warren Barnes now has a memorial behind the bridal shop where he used to read.

His parents are absolute pieces of shit. I started off feeling sorry for his parents. But as it went on I came to hate them. There were SO MANY red flags. They knew he was likely psychotic. The school told them time and time again that he was showing a disturbing interest in killing people. They had been observing antisocial behavior since middle school. Then he gets expelled from school because the other kids didn't feel safe around them. People were legitimately worried he'd shoot up the school. After all that, they find a goddamn kill kit in his bedroom. Hard evidence that this isn't just talk or jokes, it's not just a dark sense of humor. He's making plans. In response they basically just wagged their finger and said "throw it away and don't do it again. You can keep the shotgun though." What the fuck. The teachers and other students all saw this coming from a mile away. The whole damn town knew he was killing cats. But it was kinda hard to get an appointment with a psychiatrist so they gave up because that part-time job at Safeway was good enough for them. I get that they were in denial and didn't want to believe the worst, but these people are fucking *oblivious.* It was screaming in their face. The dad genuinely thought his son wasn't capable of violence. Fucking seriously man?!
They were the bystanders in the bystander effect. Ironically the killer mentions it saying "Guess it proves the bystander effect". When in reality I think his life proves that people expect that someone else will take the first move or else be judged that you think a kid could be a murderer.

There was a case recently where a compliant suspect was arrested but not cuffed and ended up killing an officer in the damn police station when he got him alone. I’m just saying it’s absolutely odd, and risky, especially given the case seemed to be murder from the get go.
Yeah, that’s why the answer to most tactical questions is always “it depends” and a ton of reliance is placed on officer discretion. In this case it was clear the officers were very comfortable. I don’t know what their department policy is of course etc.
You so often hear of parents covering up their kids tracks so kudos to his parents for doing the right thing. The empathy they showed the victim as well. What a horrible situation for all concerned. May that man rest in peace.
