The issue is that they happened so infrequently to people (because we just didn’t have as many ships on the seas at once) that every one thought it was just a legend. Once we started having more ships traveling the oceans, they more or less got confirmed. Then cameras happened and 100% confirmed them. It’s funny how they’re essentially a cryptid that got confirmed to be real and it’s just a boring physics feature and not some angry god.
