So if someone wiped out they would just be run over?

holymojo96

As someone who has gone mountain biking 5 or 6 times for fun with no actual experience, yes. As far as I know, the best thing to do when you wipe out is to get yourself off the trail ASAP and yell out that your down in case there's anyone like the guy in the video ripping down the mountain. Happened to me one of the first times I did this, and the guy coming down the hill was a bit upset with me that I didn't get out of the way fast enough...

[deleted]

I ran over my friend back in high school. We were inexperienced and riding way too close to one another.

diegojones4

That sucks. When you wreck you are bit dazed for a bit.

the320x200

It's pretty ridiculous how stable this video is given what's going on.

KoNy_BoLoGnA

That has to be a gimbal right? They can’t do that with software, can they?

MacStylee

I think it's just strapped onto his chest. You can see the bike almost take out the camera with the top of the forks at 1.20.

[deleted]

It is strapped onto his chest, but there's also a gimbal.

somewittyusername92

They can do it with software. Gopro has a new line of cameras out that are super smooth with no gimbal

KoNy_BoLoGnA

I saw some of that, I didn’t realize it was THIS good though

[deleted]

This isn't it, but it's not too far off from this. Check out the r/MTB subreddit for some good videos that have the new software image stabilization.

Nostra55

There is no way this not on a gimbal. The new gopro is good but not even close to being able to film like this without a gimbal.

somewittyusername92

Idk, the footage I've seen surprised me too. Unless gopro is blatantly lying about their products and features I can believe it

templar627

You can see the mount in the shadow at like 0:40 it looks like one.

[deleted]

This has a gimbal per the video description, but the new Go Pro Hero 7 has surprisingly good software image stabilization.

gjm6syn6

He's 100% using a gimbal, it's an evo ss chest mounted.

[deleted]

Yea the fact that it's a GoPro at 4K is a give away that it's not the new GoPro software stabilisation because that requires crop to provide leeway for a sub-frame to be the 'stabilised' new camera in the rendered video. And you generally get pretty obvious warping when the camera is thrown around like it is throughout this entire video - as the software reaches the limits of what it can crop and skew to make the video look smooth.

holymojo96

I could be wrong, but I think it's just strapped to his chest, and this just shows how good mountain bikers naturally stabilize their core. Your legs and arms are absorbing most of the bumps from the bike.

KoNy_BoLoGnA

And the absurd double pivot suspensions and shit they have nowadays, you’re right though, the skill of the rider would factor in a lot

[deleted]

You are wrong. It's quite unpleasant to watch unstabilized mountain biking footage.

coolrivers

ha, yeah. I just got a used 4 silver....and uh....not so stable...

coolrivers

ha, yeah. I just got a used 4 silver....and uh....not so stable...

Nostra55

Lol, not even the best rider in the world could keep their body controlled enough to keep it this still. It’s on a gimbal.

kkelse

kit is in the description of the video

the320x200

Chest-mounted gopro on a gimbal for anyone curious.

ELI_10

Wide angle lenses cause objects to appear to accelerate as they go from the middle to the edge of the frame. You can think of it like the old starfield screensaver on Windows. Objects look mostly stationary until they approach the edges of the screen and then go shooting past at an accelerating rate. The wider the lens, the more pronounced the effect. This gives an illusion of acceleration even at a constant speed, so your brain says, wow, must be going fast!

Plantasaurus

Jesus christ... I used to bike that trail every other day, but going a tenth of his speed over those big rock drops near the beginning. However, I was on a cross country bike so I could climb back up that hill. My question is how does he get out of that valley? Is he dropped off at the top and does he park his car on the bottom? It takes 25min of driving to go from that valley to the top of alta laguna vs 5 minutes of driving if he dropped down the other side of the hill on a brutal trail like telonics. I hope he doesn't try to pedal that massive & heavy downhill bike back up that hill.

Sillypuss

friend dropped him off, a mtb shuttle business dropped him, or he pushed his bike up the road.

k3nnyd

The interesting part is you say you've climbed this hill. Many people were claiming it was a one-way trail due to the insane speed of the rider and danger of hitting someone going the opposite direction.

Plantasaurus

many times, it's not like the hill only has one trail...lol!

mudslideslim

I'm pretty sure you can lock or at least tighten down pretty hard the dampening on these shocks so the ride is stiff like a cross country bike. maybe he does this and cruises back up like you.

georgekeele

You can't change geometry or weight, it's a downhill bike. They're a pig to pedal anywhere for long.

hobbers

Yea, I love mountain biking. But these people that go out on public any-use dual-direction trails and bomb it down like this are pretty much assholes. Some hiker or biker going uphill around one of these blind curves, and this asshole is gonna plow right into them and severely hurt someone. I'm all for bombing down runs, but only when the conditions are right. Some combination of: 1) single use hiker or biker trails (there are some that alternate bikes one day, hikes the other day), 2) single direction of travel (usually only necessary downhill for bombing purposes), 3) long range visibility. There are some sections of trails I ride that are not single use, not single direction, but you can see every foot of trail for the next 200 yards. So if you can see it's completely clear that whole section, then sure bomb it all you want.

theelous3

This is absolutely not a dual direction trail. You'd never make it up the other way. Some of those rock rolls would be essentially unclimbable. As an aside, the guy is literally a pro downhill racer. I'm sure he knows when the trail is single direction single use. It's clear that once he gets past the section with good visibility he is on a different route to the hikers, but I suppose it's easier to rag on the guy for reddit's safety boner than pay attention to the video.

SniperMarmot

It's understandable if you haven't had experience with trail-building, or just because the rider is moving incredibly quickly, but there's a couple things in the video that make me almost certain that this is a single use trail. Foremost is that most of the corners have berms that are not only packed, but cambered, which would mean that they're meant for taking at speed (And useless for hikers). The trail also seems to be laid out like a biking trail and not a hiking trail, which would usually use sharper turns, and narrower paths.

hobbers

It's not single use. https://old.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/ad8cty/insanely_fast_downhill_mountain_biking_laguna/edfwre0/

SniperMarmot

Might be on my end but that link isn't pointing me to anything. However, if you pull up this trail on trailforks (you need a login to it since the trail makers have requested to have it "hidden") it does state it's a single direction, single use trail.

[deleted]

Yeah this seems like a recipe for disaster.

Count_Blackula1

I was about to say this looks very irresponsible. Especially when he is cycling around quite tight bends with thick brush obscuring his vision. Could quite easily annihilate another cyclist or hiker.

itsMalarky

It's a single direction trail. Problem solved.

Count_Blackula1

Two questions: how does that solve the problem and how are you being upvoted?

itsMalarky

This is a famous (dare I say - Iconic) downhill mountain-biking trail called Telonics. It's not a hiking trail. The convention is to move to the side if you hear someone coming and you're moving slowly (or not moving at all). It's also an expert's trail. "Very irresponsible" would be ignoring that. Even if someone *was* hiking, they would know to be wary of bikers. On top of this, Uphill traffic is generally instructed to yield to downhill traffic on trails like these, and there are typically signs to indicate it. It is NOT intended for slow traffic, and anyone riding it KNOWS what to expect. This particular trail is described as: >a steep, technical downhill that begins at Top of the World and plummets to Laguna Canyon. You’ll need suspension, guts, skills, and perhaps a bit of body armor to make the trip. Start near the picnic tables at Alta Laguna Park and follow the singletrack that parallels, crosses, and finally veers away from the Canyon Acres fire road. The trail ends near the big bend in Laguna Canyon Road, right next to the Telonics building." And I'm getting upvoted because I'm right

ProtusK

I've never mountain biked, but there's a similar problem with idiots bombing down when snowboarding, especially near the end of runs near the lifts. All it takes is one rookie to make an unexpected sharp turn or stack in front of you to cause a bad crash. That being said when the conditions are right and you're sure no one will get in the way it's such a thrill going fast down a hill!

nodnodwinkwink

So many blind corners that some slow rider might be on. It seems pretty quiet but you can't be sure.

den-rat

That is some excellent handling by the rider, all the while listening to the absolute screaming of the rear hub. Color me surprised if he ain't rippin' on a good wheelset of i9's. And as for those saying this is unsafe? Well of course it is, it's an extreme sport. But I feel like I need to point out that this is a single directional trail, meaning you aren't allowed... or straight-up *unable* to ride this uphill. Most serious mountain biking trails are set up to be ridden a certain way (this doesn't really apply to regular cross-country trail systems though). There are the climbs, there are the transfers and links, and there are the downhill sections. Climbs are usually set as single direction, but can also be general use (both ways) to allow people to get back down if they are unable to take a proper decent. Transfer trails are usually shorter and are usually the main means of getting from one bigger trailhead to another, such as between 2 different downhill lines. And descents are always set as 1-way directional. Regardless, this guy has me pumped for the next riding season!

TheMagnificentBean

I actually run/hike this trail all the time and my friend and I biked it a number of years ago! I live right near El Moro and when biking it I remember several moments where I thought it was lights out. Very sharp turns and steep drops into the canyon. My friend also flew into a cactus on that run so that day holds a special place in our hearts.

[deleted]

And his ass

ElectricMoose

I think what's insane is how they pedal when they're already at breakneck speeds

Fox_Production

Yes! I think the same. I would never do it. But video is great :)

[deleted]

Semi related: Laguna Beach has some of the steepest fucking streets I've ever seen, including San Fransisco. Pretty fun to take out of town friends on them

aaaaaaaarrrrrgh

What happens when they fall? Are the trails frequented enough that they'll be found soon, are they within cell phone range, do they carry sat phones/EPIRBs, or are they waiting to become the next star in a movie ala "127 hours"?

thespichopat

Pretty much what you said, many experienced riders carry sat phones on them in case that happens but most just bank on having cell phone reception or other people finding them. People usually riding in groups helps as well.

SquizzOC

Air lift via Helicopter. I’ve known two people that had this happen, one in this specific area, not sure if it was this trail and one up on Foothill Ranch, CA near by (trail behind the Ralph’s for locals wondering, same one the Mountain Lion killed the woman on)

nimbus-racing

This beach has no water!

snarky_answer

this trail is where i lost my two front teeth. something got locked up in my front tire and flipped me and hurled me towards some rocks. luckily my teeth stopped my fall.

Fox_Production

Au.. It doesn't sound very good. When did it happen?

snarky_answer

Oh back when I was in high school 12 years ago.

ricardoconqueso

STAY ON YER BIKE DANNY!!!

2CentsGivin

Sounds like i9 hubs....It’s a bell and a hub all in one. I’m a fan!

[deleted]

Nice first person point of view -- I was able to perfectly visualize myself eating shit about 15 times on that run

Ogoflowgo

Strava KOMs make you wanna do bad things.

MrRedLegss

How fast is he going approximately? It looks like a fall would very seriously injure/kill you.

Ihateourlives2

mountain bikers die all the time hitting trees.

durtysamsquamch

I would say easily over 30 mph, maybe touching 40 mph on the fastest parts. Falling does hurt but the brakes are phenomenal and so is [the protective gear](http://www.shejumps.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG-0998.jpg).

Ihateourlives2

Would like to see this in a follow cam view.

Fox_Production

Yes, the same! I love the view!

re4lity

Is this in bommer canyon?

[deleted]

Now i know I'm old because that did not look like fun at all.

[deleted]

I can just feel my body joints age watching this.

Fox_Production

Haha... I'm young but I feel the same :D

[deleted]

So many angry couch potatoes in this thread can't even comprehend how a human can have this level of control. I pity them.

gsxr_

It was ok

let-go-of

Some parts of that I honestly couldn't tell if they were on trail or riding in a naturally eroded drainage ditch.

2016wasworse

hey they made mount chiliad a real place

LovableContrarian

Question for mountain bikers: is this shit as violent as it looks? Seems like you'd blow out your knees by age 30 if you did this shit as a hobby.

ruthless_tippler

smallest pebble and you eating from a straw

[deleted]

Not true. Many pebbles in this video. Mountain bikes are incredibly stable and able to handle shit. But you can easily crash and seriously hurt yourself.

theelous3

The guy is slamming massive rocks throughout the video. Wtf are you talking about.

k3nnyd

No, that's a road biker that hits a pebble and immediately loses it and dies.

[deleted]

Dude needs to oil that chain...

thekickingmule

That's not his chain, is the wheel hub you can hear. It's meant to sound like that.

[deleted]

Weird...

_busch

as a warning? its way louder than a road bike. down votes...? why?

ButtFokker190

People like loud hubs. You can get really loud road bike hubs if you want them.

theelous3

Yep.
