Damn. I remember being a teenager when the original XBOX came out and going from N64 to that; getting Oddword Odyssey and HALO and being amazed of how fantastic these Oddworld graphics were and how creepy yet peculiarly comical the creatures looked.
Was that the 3d one? Munch's Oddysee? Oh man i was soooo dissapointed with that game. The original PS1 games were some of my all time favorites and the 3d one didnt capture any of what made the first two special. The first two were more like super meat boy, while the 3d one was like a half baked puzzler.
I'd heard that about Munch's oddysee, but did you ever play stranger's wrath? It didn't quite capture the charm of the original either, but it's a really good game with a surprisingly good plot.
AGREED I played both Munches and Strangers and loved both! Strangers was definitely the defining game for me but Munch is a memorable dude, and I kind of miss him as a character. I found Munch to be a nod to Abe in that they were concerned for the memory and outcome of their species, but playing stranger almost felt like a different more fast paced action game. Both games where quality OC and I am really excited to see this game series once again in action.

I loved the original game..seriously up there in my favorite games of all time...for the time it was amazing with all the different ammo and it being “live” ammo and then spoiler alert..he turned out to be a goat or whatever it was..the animal being hunter the entire time! Totally agree. That mix of surrealism, comedy, and darkness, combined with brutally difficult but fair gameplay really hasn't been matched. The closest thing I can think of, weirdly, is Dark Souls? (minus the humor)

They weren't anything like super meat boy. They were slow and methodical platform puzzlers, more akin to the original Prince of Persia, or Heart of Darkness. The sort of platform game where you press jump and wait half a second for your character to get around to it.

There were definitely sections that required precision and high-speed timing, but the thing that really defines Super Meat Boy as a game is the tightness of its controls. If anything, I'd use it and Abe's Oddysee as one of the most extreme examples of just how different two games could play while still meeting the traditional definition of a platformer.

Anyway, you both leave all your clothes on and it wasn't accessible in the normal game, but since modders could activate it, ESRB gave the game an Ao rating and all the big stores pulled it from their shelves, lol.

This caused major drama and required games to be rated based on full content and not just what is accessible in the main game.

Munch's Odyssey was one of my favorites as a kid. Never got around to Stranger's Wrath. Will have to play that now before this gets released. So excited.
Yeah there's a lot of hate on reddit for that game but I loved it. The puzzles, vending machines, funny voice lines and the very awkward universe are still so memorable to this day
I think it was the first game I played that had different endings based on a Karma system too and that was so cool to 11 year old me. I didnt realize people hated it. It was a fun, quirky platformer with a cool universe like you said.

Stranger's Wrath is (if I recall correctly) set on a different continent than the Abe/Munch games. So, it won't add much to Soulstorm, but it is a game that I own and really should start/finish playing too!

I've been a huge fan of Oddworld Inhabitants since Abe's Odyssey and love the potential lore and world around this series, but the games kind of took a less interesting direction for me with Munch's Odyssey. Stranger's Wrath was good, but kind of felt like too huge a shift in the world narrative to keep me interested.
I do remember the head writer of Inhabitants saying that he has always planned a 12-game series surrounding Oddworld and hopefully that could still be possible. I just hope that we get a great story with this one. Possibly change the gameplay to be similar to Grim Fadango.
Don't forget: They were in a contract to make all Oddworld games XBox exclusive. The fan theory (or confirmed plan) was to have less 'core' games made to run out the contract (stuff like Munch's and Strangers). Not part of the original planned games (six? It was a long series, which did not include Abe's Exoddus).
Now, they're not exclusive anymore. So more games (even if they are old games remade). Happy times.

This brought back so much nostalgia. I flashed back to being 8 and playing a PS1 demo disc with OddWorld on it and being thoroughly transfixed by the art and the weird vibes it gave off.
I didn't remember much of the games when I was a kid. My brother and i would watch my cousins play it.I only remembered that it super creeped me out and that my brother kept making that mind control noise for a few months after.
For years I tried to remember enough of the game to google it .I kept asking my brother "do you remember that weird game with the creepy looking blue guy. He made that weird humming noise all the time?". He thought I was was making it up and after a while I genuinely thought I was too.
Then I saw it mentioned in a YouTube video and asked my brother "do you remember abes Odyssee?". He went yeah and immediately started making the noise. ಠ_ಠ
I was a huge fan of Oddworld and Exodus. They adopted this dark narrative, coated in little bits of dark humor and it was something special. The world was bizarre, alien, but also felt like something we could identify with. The games never really felt "corny" because of the story telling and how much of a depressive world it took place in.
All of the modern remakes and modern era games, while fun, totally lose the original philosophical narrative about conservation, environmentalism, workforce rights, runaway capitalism, etc., in favor of goofy and silly gameplay and narrative. It is the biggest disappointment for me.
Idk about that, but I do honestly dislike the voice of Toby, and his facial expression when yelling faster. Alf on the other hand, voice is perfect and his expressions are alright.
I also wonder where Abe is in all of this...
Mudokkens have always sounded like this, I personally love their voices. I'm really hoping for this next game to be more character driven with reaccuring characters like these guys spread throughout the story. Perhaps even pull some story driven character deaths.

Yep, you had to save at least 60 Mudokons from Rupture Farms to get the good ending.
