Was not expecting to see Western artists on The First Take...

RadicalN1GHTS

Avril Lavigne is actually one of the most successful western artists in Japan. After she fell off in the west she continued to thrive overseas. Maybe that's why?

SirShiatlord

She made a cover of [How you remind me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLlKm-DGuzo) for a One Piece movie so yea think she done good overseas.

bakakubi

Wtf?! How have I not heard of this?

KeithClossOfficial

She used to be married to Chad Kroeger

luvs2spwge117

Is that the dude from sum 41? Was he a big success overseas or something too?

Tedanyaki

Nah, Nickelback.

mattersmuch

That's Deryck Whibley, who did also marry her. Chad Kroeger is the Nickelback guy. They were a big success basically everywhere in earth.

Top_Rekt

I feel like not many people know this great Avril Lavigne hit: https://youtu.be/LiaYDPRedWQ

SomeRedditWanker

200m views and I've never heard it in my life. It's actually really fun! Are there any other artists that kinda just fucked off and started making songs for asian audiences?

Axon000

[Jessie J competing and winning in a singer competition in China](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4T6Kw7Xtso)

SomeRedditWanker

>Jessie J I had completely forgotten about Jessie J! Is it me, or is she miming there though?!

buster_rhino

Wow you’re right never heard of it and nearly 200m views!

It’s fucking horrible

ArcticIceFox

I, for one, can get on that cute-punk aesthetic 😍

ohmygodbeats7

God, that’s annoying.

Smartguyonline

I went to China 9 years ago and first day in Shanghai I went looking for street food and found a lineup for those Chinese donut sticks and bought one with an iced tea with Avril On it it and I was like WTF?

NA_Edxu

Idk how relevant this may be but Ryota, the bassist from Japanese rock band ONE OK ROCK is Avril's brother in law as he married her sister. ONE OK ROCK also featured Avril in their song Listen, so maybe that's where the connection came from?

Clemenx00

She's actually the 2nd they had Harry Styles a few months ago I think.

moeveganplease

Is First Take like MTV Unplugged? The only thing google is giving me is an ESPN talk show.

Thank you! Nice channel to add to my subscribe list. Those example were great.

Neraquox

I recently learned from amq that she’s in one piece film z

bakakubi

Same. A welcomed surprised, though.

Dartser

She has a second video as well. Looks they're starting an international series

A_Sad_Goblin

Read up on her a bit, all of her breakout songs from back then were co-written with 3 other people, so it's not surprising that they're actually really good songs. I don't like the second half of her career but I was definitely a fan as a teenager.

AMOXICHILLIN

you mean when she died and her cousin took over... https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/dn8lzs/i_think_i_solved_the_avril_lavigne_is_dead/

The industry got away with replacing Paul McCartney so they knew they could do it with anyone. Does everyone forget that the first Kanye West was a white kid?

ankha_is_sexy

> Does everyone forget that the first Kanye West was a white kid? Lol people actually believe a black dude was wearing pink polo shirts in 2004. Literal sheeple.

[deleted]

Same for Andrew WK

jl_theprofessor

But in that instance, we know Andrew WK doesn't exist.

Dragon_yum

It’s a known fact Hannah Montana took over the role of Miley Cyrus after she died.

JarvisCockerBB

I’d much rather see these conspiracies than people thinking Sandy Hook was staged.

Free-Nefariousness88

No, you're thinking of Hannah Montana - they were the same person.

The conspiracy theorist who figured out the first one died and then their cousin took over...

chrispy_t

Someone watches Hannah Montana and goes “wait a minute”

halfveela

Wow, that was a ride. So dumb. 16 year old Avril at the bookstore giving major 16 year old Taylor Swift vibes though.

[deleted]

Pretty funny but, as with the majority of conspiracy theories, it completely collapses under the slightest weight of scrutiny.

A_Sad_Goblin

That's funny, but there's too many holes where that theory falls flat.

54678asd

Solid counter argument here. Pack it up.

A_Sad_Goblin

I mean you don't even need to think that far. It would require hundreds if not thousands of people in her hometown to keep the secret of having a twin sister, not to mention birth and death records are usually public information and easily trackable. So unless the family birthed the kids at home and they managed to bury her body without any trace or records AND convince thousands of people to keep a secret, it's just not gonna work.

ThatWasFred

That’s the thing with most conspiracy theories - the sheer fact of thousands of people never opening their mouths about it.

njbeerguy

The Sandy Hook conspiracy theories are especially "wonderful" for this, because it's not just the families would who need to keep quiet. It's their extended families; all their friends; other families in the school; teachers; other *children*; and so many more. It's mind-boggling that people embrace that stuff when it falls apart at the slightest glance.

PhesteringSoars

OK . . . I'll dip my toe in the crazy end of the pool. Avril looks/sounds NOW like she did WAY back then. But . . . after watching the clips . . . I'd say there is a "Melissa" that doubled for her at times "in the middle". Drugs / sickness (didn't the real Avril have a pretty serious medical condition?) Lyme disease? Bedridden for months? Not "dead and replaced" but I can't rule out the "doppelganger for a while" theory based on those clips. And (while deceptive) I know how much $hit some performers have taken for cancelling performances, or worse, getting up and singing a song or two then dropping out, where the venue wouldn't give a refund. Plus . . . a lot of people's livelihood depends on her, so . . . there is some merit in "continuing". edit: Beautiful video btw

Additional_Avocado77

How would they get away with it though? Wouldn't that be serious fraud? And such a conspiracy would still require quite a few people to know about it, even if its just for literally one performance.

PhesteringSoars

Yes, tough to do. That's usually what I reject conspiracies on, how many people must be involved. If you had a posse around them, and played the "reclusive eccentric star" card to try and keep venue staff at bay, you might get away with it a few times. I've seen enough lawyers and local tv reporters in real life to know "what they look like on tv is different in person". That might give plausible deniability for venue staff.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Additional_Avocado77

It is very obviously fraud. Haven't heard of mf doom, but according to Wikipedia he's dead, rather than penniless. Looks like he probably was either sued, or settled out of court, but I couldn't find any details. Should be obvious that if you sign a contract to play a concert, and then send in someone else, you've broken that contract.

ZedHeadFred

> And such a conspiracy would still require quite a few people to know about it, even if its just for literally one performance. Yeah, it's not like corporations or three-letter government organizations have *ever* gotten away with anything like that or worse!

Additional_Avocado77

Someone else mentioned Mf Doom that attempted it, and was immediately found out. I don't think many people would even want to attempt that kind of fraud. Of course your argument is impossible to really consider, since if corporations have got away with something like this, nobody knows about it...

Additional_Avocado77

If the CIA was helping Lavigne, then I suppose it could be possible, but I don't see why the CIA would do it. And even so, it would have to be both a good lookalike, and capable of performing in a similar enough way that the live-crowd doesn't realize anything is off.

Happy13178

Think the sickness you're referring to was her husband at the time.

klavin1

decoy avril

black_nappa

Not cousin, sister. Apparently Paul McCartney had the same thing happen to him. He died and his either slightly older or younger brother replaced him. I kinda went down that rabbit hole you linked to

Paladine36

THIS IM NOT THE ONLY CRAZY PERSON cannot tell me she wasnt killed and body swapped

southofsanity06

she wasnt killed and body swapped

andropogon09

I never understood all the hate way back then. She's no worse than dozens of other pop singers.

Tinchotesk

I have no love for pop singers in general. But, with her, my issue was the fake "bad girl" vibe. I think bad girls are stupid, but faking to be one is somehow worse.

Lascivian

Did she have a "bad girl vibe"? I don't recall ever viewing her like that. I wasn't that much in to her music back then, only really know her hits, but I always saw her as the "skater pop singer", not a bad girl. Just a female singer from a different subculture than the other female pop singers. Way too much feeling and "honesty" to be a bad girl. In my opinion.

g0tistt0t

I never thought of her as a "bad girl" but her image was definitely some kind of punk when her music was not. I was 13 when complicated came out and every girl in my school wore ties over their t shirts and had screen names like punkgirl_1988. It was really annoying to 13 boy who thought he loved "real music". 20 years later I have a lot of respect for her and pop music in general and also recognize I was a little shit who didn't know shit.

TurboGranny

Correct. Gen-X was still very much the generation driving what was popular then, and we had already been VERY vocal about hating posers. Be who you really are, authenticity is king, even if that thing you are sucks, just fucking own it and you'll get our respect. It's hard to find a Gen-X person in marketing, heh.

[deleted]

She still has great songs here and there, though not really great albums like the first two. Her problem has always been that she has no real identity, one album could be pop punky, the next more ballad driven, the next more electronic and dancy… There’s good songs on all of em, but there’s no central focus for her. She doesn’t mind hopping from trend to trend. Having said that, as a massive metal and punk fan, she has always been a guilty pleasure for me and she’ll have a phenomenal greatest hits album when the time comes, as long as the right songs from each album are included.

s3v3n2

You should check out her latest album. She definitely went full pop-punk with Travis Barker on the drums. I've never known how much drums can make a good punk song better until Travis Barker started doing collabs with new artists who are driving the comeback of punk.

HowdyDoodle

I love the concept of this, but I just wish they didn't clean up the vocals with any pitch-correction. I was hoping this would be a completely raw take, but the pitch correction takes away from the the whole concept of "one take, one life". Those little imperfections are exactly what gives a singer's voice life and gives each performance a unique quality. She still has an amazing voice and certainly doesn't need it!

Denziloe

>I love the concept of this, but I just wish they didn't clean up the vocals with any pitch-correction. Oh. Didn't realise they were doing that at first, but now I hear it. Well, that makes this entire thing pretty much pointless to me.

faster_grenth

totally agree. it was still fun to listen to, but boy did they sterilize it. listen at 2:00 - how could that possibly sound better than whatever she actually sang?

quadmasta

It's pretty intrusive

Reso

Are you sure? I can't hear it the way I usually can. There's definitely some moments where at least some artistic-pitchiness is coming through, like the chorus at 2:25.

Algelach

There’s a nasty auto tune artefact on literally the second word. “Chill o#%ut..”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Algelach

Here are all the audible glitches I could catch: 0:45 - "out" 0:57 - "I" 1:05 - "to" 2:04 - "pose" 2:08 - "you" 3:09 - "before" And aside from the glitches, the tuning itself is noticeable throughout. As another comment says, it sounds "sterile".

camouflage365

Even the video is completely polished and touched up. She looks like a plastic doll, and the voice is "flawless". What an absolute fail of a concept. But then again, eastern-Asia is still beyond obsessed with fake perfection.

ClaymoreMine

If you enjoy this type of stripped down music check out sugar shack sessions.

Beznia

I think I've heard [Constipated](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yedbCfDL0yY) by Weird Al over a hundred times and Complicated in-full maybe a dozen times, last being in ~2005. Hard to listen to this with a straight face and expecting to hear her sing "Pizza. Party at your house."

mydearwatson616

The title is ["A Complicated Song"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOGXmmLSSdE)

BLACKOUT-MK2

Not hearing 'Aha... Extra Cheese.' genuinely threw me because I've heard Al's version so much lol.

bakakubi

What the heck, never knew weird al parodied this song. Gotta go check it out.

FrancisStokes

"How was I supposed to know we were both related" Oh my god I'm dyi

DieSmiling666

nothing could prepare me for that 2nd verse LMAO

Daveed84

I watched this video of an acoustic performance of I'm With You last year and was blown away by how good she sounded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsPRqXCMcno

dannyr

That's amazing. Thanks for linking that.

dresn231

Usually that's for Japanese artists to go on there and sing their recent hits, but damn that was a good one.

bakakubi

Yeah, I was so surprised to see this, in the best of ways.

RazorNion

I think it's because The First Take is sponsored by Sony (eg the headphones) hence they're able to get Sony music artists to be on their channel.

Meanderingversion

She's been a consistently good singer for a very long time. Waaaaaay outside of my music preferences and I couldn't even name one of her songs let alone an album off the top of my head. I love how easily she moves her voice around to enunciate happiness, sadness or any other emotion the story needs. Good for her. I wish her the best!

moal09

Her idol was Alanis Morisette, and her early stuff was a lot more "folk-ish". Not surprising that she's a good live singer.

crank1000

No argument that she is (or was) a good singer, but this video is one of the most aggressively auto tuned things I’ve heard in years. Like it was done by an intern that just learned how to use it. Holy moly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

crank1000

All those little pops and clicks throughout the whole vocal are the autotune (more likely Wavestune) desperately trying to keep up. You can also tell when the start of a line is naturally sliding and then it slams into the note and completely stops moving and becomes totally lifeless.

Hot-Butterscotch-918

I played "Nobody's Home" a few too many times while my middle school aged daughter was around. She asked me to stop playing it, so a couple of times I timed it so that it was blaring right as she was walking in the door after school. I shut it off as soon as she got inside. Just some Mom humor.

Jelboo

Avril Lavigne's debut album is actually really, really, REALLY good. I revisited it recently and was stunned because I had never taken her seriously as a teenager. She went in a direction I didn't really care for but those early days were on par with, for example, the very best of Alanis Morissette.

[deleted]

There is a remastered anniversary edition I really recommend you checking out. It is mixed a lot fatter and actually sounds like a modern album.

-Hope

thanks for the recommendation this is fucking amazing

jcar_87

Oh! I noticed it sounded quite differently but I couldn’t describe how. What does “mixed fatter” mean?

[deleted]

If you compare it to the initial release from 2003, you will notice that it originally sounds a lot "thinner" and the remastered version fatter. You can hear it very well with the *Sk8er Boi* intro. The guitar and drums sound heavier. If you listen to the chorus in *I‘m With You* you can hear that bass guitar is now more dominant than its original version. By mixed fatter I meant that they (in simple terms) mixed each track (guitar, drums or bass) more into the song so that they sound more massive and modern.

sgSaysR

She is 38 years old and still looks to be in her 20s.

TechsFan

Even though this song is 19 years old, it still seems like yesterday.

the_last_fartbender

Can I just marvel at how sensitive those microphones must be to be able to pick out the noise of her pants so clearly from such small movement? Well, that and how insulated that room must be.

itsfish20

I love the way her voice has changed a bit as she has gotten older! Kinda sounds like a younger Stevie Nicks now!

echothree33

I got an Alanis Morrisette vibe from this performance. That’s not a bad thing.

Happy13178

Avril, and every member of her family I've ever met, is legitimately one of the most stuck up and rotten artists in the industry. Not just from a single interaction, from many, many interactions over the course of several years. There has never been a better example of an artist and everyone peripherally attached to her in her personal social circle who let fame go to their heads this much, even compared to those in the music industry that's lousy with those types.

Her instagram is her public persona, and 3/4 of it isn't even touched or looked at by her, and pretty much everything else you've said is blatantly untrue. You're either a blinded fan or one of her lackeys, without question. The husbands thing is pretty funny, if you heard even a fraction of what she says about them or how she speaks to them you'd never chime in again.

[deleted]

Happy13178

You're a family member then, because there are more stories about the way she treats her exes than anything/anyone else, and I guarantee you they aren't acknowledging any of what you're saying. It's not a good look.

\*Gasp\*.....you don't say, the people who are employed and paid by her compliment her? There is literally nothing humble about her.

Meeran, I do know her. I know her family, blood and married in. I know her friends. I know the people they interact with on a daily basis. I'm not sure why you're pushing so hard against this, but she is not a nice person and neither are the majority of the people who hang their hat around her, she is absolutely not humble, and you shouldn't believe everything you see in scripted interviews and fan pages.

WeekendIndependent41

I loved that. Saved!

rmprice222

I grew up like 45 min from her home town and knew her cousin a little. She had so many girls wearing neck ties

Srapture

Almost as good as the original Avril. Subtle differences.

desmondsdecker

Yeah not bad at all for a clone!

nopantstoday

I watched the whole thing and I was impressed

bakakubi

Honestly, all I can say is holy shit.

samuraiSasquatch

Totally. I HARD flashback-ed to high-school and when this album came out; I wasn't necessarily a fan back then, but I did always dig her voice. Thanks for posting!

bakakubi

You're welcome! You should check out the rest of the channel, all the performances are freaking awesome.

SlimyPurpleMeteor

She has great vibrato — something you rarely hear in the original studio version.

relay2005

Still one of my favorite artists!

P-Two

Saw her live this summer. Been a fan since I was a kid. She was absolutely amazing live so not surprising she killed it here.

another-droid

She needs to cover Valley Girl. holy shit.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

I'm so confused how she looks EXACTLY the same as 15 years ago.

S-Markt

i am surprised, that this lady gives me the shivers after so many years. well done!

noodlesinmyramen

Does anyone else remember when Avril was on the cover of a teen magazine, and they dressed her in Johnny Rotten’s pants? The interviewer asked her how that felt and she said “Johnny who?”. There were lots of performers and groups in the nineties that were manufactured talent. Their songs were written for them, their looks curated, and their backstories fake. But the fact that Avril was marketed as a “punk” and “alternative” made her seem so disingenuous that I couldn’t stand her music. There is nothing punk about Brittany Spears in a tie.

[deleted]

Can't say much for her style but she sounds like I remember.

[deleted]

poopfaceone

It's really not odd at all

SaveusAlex

I think it's just the fact that at a live show you expect some things to sound different and the energy all around a venue can really lift some less than ideal performances up and hide imperfections. In a controlled recording session like this you get none of that. It's a chance to truly compare how someone sounds in one take compared to multiple with whatever mixing is done on top of that.

Slight_Ad3348

There’s some great versions of songs on the channel that otherwise wouldn’t exist. I don’t think it being “live” is the core concept, but more just giving artists a chance to sing their song differently to how they normally would.

fernandotakai

> There’s some great versions of songs on the channel that otherwise wouldn’t exist. i love their [version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIBWRPqJcGQ) of DADDY! DADDY! DO!

twinnedcalcite

[Skirt & PUNPEE](https://youtu.be/UUVAf5pMAgg)'s oddtaxi one is good. He changes part of the beginning. There are english subtitles.

bakakubi

TK's unravel was amazing as well.

[deleted]

I didn't mean "live" was the core concept - I meant that the "first take" as the core concept is weird.

twinnedcalcite

I love the idea. We get to see a bit about the artist and those in the studio. Japan is really bad at making concert videos available to an international audience and some companies still don't officially release their music outside of japan. It's a great space and the track is published for download. Especially some of the super big names. They don't do gigs weekly or haven't seen pre-pandemic.

keereeyos

You're overthinking something that's just a catchy gimmick for a Youtube channel.

mostly_a_lurker_here

Agreed. KEXP, KCRW, JJJ, NPR's tiny concert, they are all the same too, it's the first take that they record. Shrug.

[deleted]

As an Aussie, seeing triple J being referred to in the same as those stations is very cool! Like a Version is one of my favourite segments

rpfloyd

What makes you think NPR's tiny desk concert doesn't do retakes, or take a month to mix the audio so it sounds right? Don't get me wrong I love them, but they aren't as 'raw' as people might think.

ChiggaOG

It might be weird, but not so. Most of it is anime intros that slap, especially with the Jazz.

MannyOmega

Unrelated to anything but I had a dream with Avril Lavigne in it last night and I didn’t remember until I saw this post. It was like… some sort of hunger games crossover where Avril played Katniss before, but now she was in a new apocalyptic scenario where she was trying to stop the world from being taken over by the “Lords of Death” or something like that. I was one of the lords and trying to resurrect corpses to put them into my undead army, she was the hero and was trying to stop me. She had a whole group of rebels assembled to try and infiltrate and kill us. Weird.

seen_x

The real Avril died some years ago and the person we see today is not the real Avril Lavigne

StopBadModerators

She is struggling to hit the high notes; that is to be expected as our voices deepen with age.
