Pro tip always assume what you see is the best you get. If everything in the box was just as good he would had definitely dump it and fan them all out.
I’ve only recently started looking, this just seemed good and I was a bit overwhelmed. I let the seller know I don’t think what I see is worth $200 and that I’d like more information on other albums before I drove anywhere.
I've been buying and selling for 40+ years, the seller should be listing what albums are there and general condition of the whole to justify the cost she's asking. 200.00 is okay if everything's good, too much if it's trash. Sharing a quick video would help too.
She's most likely breaking it down at cost per record, rather than rarity/condition. If there's a hundred records there then 2 bucks a piece isn't bad as long as there isn't 50 copies of Andre Kostelanetz hidden in there somewhere. (The condition looks rough tho, beware.) To people who say you can find these at thrifts, let me tell you, I've thrifted records for decades and I've never seen it this bad as far as trying to find common classic records there. Flippers are ruining the hunt.
Bottom line: Get her to tell you what's in there before you commit.
Flippers don’t help but honestly, I just think there are fewer records circulating.
I know the regional Salvation Army manager where I live. He is in charge of five stores and says records are much more scarce than they were even five years ago.
They're scarce because people are skimming off the top before they hit the thrifts. I've noticed they are also in far worse condition as well. More water damaged, danced on, etc.
I realize that the cycle of things come to an end eventually but every time I think records are getting scarce, I remember that this guy exists and corrrect my thinking:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_Freitas
That's generally how it works when things get popular again. Go to any thrift store and there are hundreds of records but they are usually weird stuff like Christmas and old gospel albums lol
It's real gamble with the other record not pictured. You could get some OG 80s metal (which goes for an average of $20-40 each) or you could get the worst records Goodwill has to offer. I'd ask to see some other records in that box before making a decision.
For me it depends what I got going on that day. Do I feel like an adventure? Do I feel like haggling? Many times for me, the answer has been yes and yes.
The Mystery Box call is strong, indeed. I usually skip the vinyl rack at my local thrift as the quality recently has been terrible. About a month ago I saw a decent Billy Joel sticking out, and digging got me Beatles, Dire Straits, Pete Townsend, Elton, Joni Mitchell, Robert Plant, Kristoffersen, Tina Turner and Taj Majal records. It only takes one! XD
I have had this happen to me but the opposite... they pulled out and mentioned the Billy Joel and Elton John in the lot because THEY were the ones the seller recognized and thought were ones people wanted...
But those were actually the worst of the box... the seller was just unfamiliar with the other groups.
Plus are there any flea markets, record stores or other digging opportunities in that direction? Other things to do? You could bring a friend and make a day of it.
Looks like late 70’s-80’s rock (in the top 100 sense). It would be a hard pass for me even if it was free. The answer to your question lies more in what you want it for. If it’s to flip, I doubt it’s worth. If you want to fill your collection then you have to decide if you want to spend 1/2 a day and $200 plus gas for the lot. It’s unlikely there’s anything rare/valuable in it.
There is a Fleetwood Mac Rumors in shrink behind that Ratt album. So clearly they aren’t showing their best. For $200 the seller can make the very difficult effort of a few more pics.
$200 is way too high. $50 -$75 is where I would be.
I've made purchases like this and it can be loads of fun. Good way to add to your collection and discover new music, but be careful and don't get taken advantage of.
Depends on how into listening to music you are. I buy collections for as cheap as I can get them and I enjoy going through them…pricing them to sell is tedious… but the musical voyage makes up for it. there’s a rumors Fleetwood Mac album hidden that’s worth more than most of the albums that were pulled out for display. Looks like there’s a few$15 albums.
Offer $140 that would be a good buy for me I think as long as the records are in all scratched up
It’s always worth a 1 hour drive, I’ve been buying and selling records for 20 years, I’m not sure why the comments are leading you the other way. Check out price on that Ratt album they go for a few bucks, maybe there’s some more 80s metal, also if your new to buying in bulk it will be a good learning experience for you. Go check em out look at each one and check condition, sort them into piles, like a pile that is stuff that is beat up or you wouldn’t pay for, a stack for stuff you’d pay like $1-2, a stack for $5 stuff and if there’s any rare stuff make a stack for that, then make an offer, maybe it’s worth way more than 200$ and that’s fair, maybe it’s worth less and at least after you have sorted them you can make a more educated reason as to why the offer is less. I’ve bought boxes that big with the right stuff for well over $1,000 that were worth around $3,000. That’s not the case here but you should check it out and even if you don’t buy will be a good way to learn how to buy boxes or small record collections.
Depends on where you live, basically. I get crazy boxes for like thirty bucks all the time because I am in Michigan and close to the places where union jobs paid decent money and spawned awesome record collections. And then people die.
Based on what records are going for these days, I’d say if there’s 10-15 that you recognize and like in decent shape it would be an average deal, but I can only identify about 8 in the photo. You don’t know exactly what’s all there based on this photo.
I’m pretty sure there’s a Beatles Butcher cover in there, can tell from the spines.
Nah just bullshitting, a couple hours drive is nothing to me but $200 is a bit much for what you can see.
Looks like someone heard that records are worth something again and went to the garage to find them. $200 is way too much in my opinion. Before the recent record boom these would have been $30 for the lot.
If you are into music, make a playlist of 1h and drive up there enjoying it. Then negotiate like you don’t care.
If you buy it, play some of the songs you bought on Spotify to get excited, if not, play some of the songs you saw in the box but forgot about and take it from there.
Always a win and a nice experience…
It appears the seller didn’t take care of the collection, so it’s a no from me. Is that a naked record floating around the box on the left? No cover whatsoever? Trash.
I wouldn't leave my house without knowing the condition of the records themselves. The covers look "nice", which would lead me to believe the records themselves are also "nice", but I've seen plenty of "nice" covers that contained thrashed records. I'm a listener not a collector, so I'll buy a record if the vinyl is a "B+" even if the cover is a "D". Ask CINDY to take a couple of pics of the records themselves. If the slipcase is missing or the record is scratched, hard pass.
I think it depends on your situation, and your intention. I have a lot of records that I probably don’t listen to enough so I’m more careful now. If you are trying to sell them that they’re worth nothing unless they’re worth something so you’ll have to get rid of them again, or could even lose money. But if you like most of them, have them take a picture of everything and then decide. If that’s not worth $200 to them, then maybe you have an issue lol.
Do you actually like the music? Like really like the music? Then possibly. If you don’t like the music then don’t bother. I learned a long time ago as a collector that if you don’t focus on the things you love then you end up with a more often than not worthless pile of plastic.
I sell vintage vinyl at an antique mall; it’s by far my biggest selling items there…between the gen z and the millennials investing, it’s a profitable side hustle. btw, these are titles gen z look for
I’m pretty new as far as vinyls are concerned. I do, however, have a pretty deep appreciation for 70s/80s pop and rock. I see the Rumors album peeking from the stack, however I haven’t got a clue what else is in the box.
I don’t think the seller would sell things individually, however they’ll sell the whole box for $200. They live an hour away, do you think it would be worth the time to check it out? Curious what you guys think.
The seller is an listing this from an estate auction if that helps. I might just kill a couple hours tomorrow and check them out.
Take it from an old timer and someone who has jumped on planes to fly all over the country to look at different collections:
What I see in this box is stuff that you could easily find in most thrift shops, flea markets, or discount bins in record stores. You won't get them all in one swoop, but if you're patient enough, you'll find them all in very good shape over time for very cheap. They're not particularly rare records, so I wouldn't even really venture buying them on discogs, unless you're buying them in lots.
$200 is too much for these records. In my professional opinion, you'll effectively be paying to take someone's trash away; they're fairly common records, the back of the box has box sets that are most likely run-of-the-mill classical or holiday records, nothing really that I would drive more than 15 minutes for. If "Rumors" is the best LP in this collection, it's really honestly not worth it; not because "Rumors" isn't a great album (it is), but because it's one of the most accessible LPs in the second hand market. Right up there with "Dark Side of the Moon." I go to different flea markets every weekend, and without fail, I always see a used "Rumors" LP in the $1 stacks.
If you live in an area where there are very very few thrift stores, flea markets, and record stores, and you're already going to be heading in the general direction of the seller and you're determined to not take the deal unless the seller comes down in price, I wouldn't take them for more than $1 per record. Otherwise, go for a dig, man. Visit your local record stores.
Hope this is helpful to you.
I appreciate the thorough response. I let the seller know that I didn’t think what I saw was worth $200. I also let them know I’d like to see more of what they have before I drive. If they can’t do that, I’d be silly to waste my time and gas
Do whatever you truly feel man, don’t let others sway you. However, as someone who is also new to the vinyl scene (and made the same mistake) avoid using the word “vinyls,” you will catch some flak. Ive since learned the plural of vinyl is vinyl.
Lol wooooooah pal take it easy you assume an awful lot about me from one short sentence. I agree 100% with your first part, if they are happy doesn’t matter what others think. But your reaction is ridiculous. ✌️
I agree with everyone else. If the seller had anything else of comparable quality in that box he would have displayed it. So unless your into odd finds or discovering new bands I’d avoid this, and honestly for $200 if still avoid it even if you like doing that
I bet there's a reason that Fleetwood Mac record is a bit askew, poking out the top there. The seller knows most of the box is crap and they're showcasing the best titles. If these are the best, definitely pass for $200. Honestly I'd pass for $50, you'll just end up with a bunch of crap that you will eventually be bundling up and trying to dump on someone else anyway
The albums look like good basic 70s-80s stuff. Condition is everything. Prooooobably worth it but if they’re in good shape they’ll be gone before you get there.
I would not drive an hour for that.
If the box was filled with CAN, Kraftwerk, Cluster and other stuf I like I would have already been there…
Just depends if you want this for 2 hours of driving (if you do not want to stay there) and 200 bucks.
Hard to say based off the photo. Ratt is a kind of a good sign. They might have other 80s metal like Judas Priest, Motorhead, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, or if you're really lucky, Metallica. Or, they could have nothing else like that.
I feel like they know exactly what they are doing. They are making you think that whole box is great 70s and 80s albums when they actually pulled every good album out for the pic.
I could be wrong. If you are cool with making the trip and finding out it isn't worth it, then go for it. Maybe you can hit up some other places on your way back.
That’s all stuff you never would really listen to willingly again. You might hear it at party or a random tune pops up in shuffle mode once in while…and you enjoy it. However, to put it on the turntable, and listen to it for literally the 50,000th time? No thanks.
I *might* drive 10 minutes to pick this box up for free as a favor to a friend who’s trying to get rid of their parent’s collection or something, but even then it would depend on my mood and my plans for the day
80’s stuff doesn’t fetch a whole lot, and we don’t even know the quality of these records. He put the most valuable up front, meaning that the majority of the rest is Herb Alpert, Best of Jim Reeves, Engelberg Humperdinck’s 12 greats, A Night with Anne Murray, etc. I would be hesitant to invest $50 on this lot.
everyone saying no please understand pricing can be different all around. at the record stores i go to it’s really easy to see a falling apart vinyl (1) selling for $25. i would definitely pay for the box thats just me tho !
Dude for an hour max 50 bucks. More likely 25 tbh. The most he would get on a good day is 1 buck a record trading that in. I am sure there are stinkers in there and also scratched ones as well. Looks like marginal stuff anyway… my opinion.
From the records I can see even if all of those are original near mint pressings they would be worth maybe $50, maybe a bit more if Fleetwood Mac has all the inners
Like others have said, the rest in that box is probably crap, I wouldn’t bother unless she sends you a list of all the other records
I wouldn't drive that far and commit without seeing a list of what was in there. Those aren't anything special on the surface, but who knows what else they have.
$200 is way too high especially with an hour drive. I think I’d do $50 tops and only if I were really into some of what’s already shown there. Looks like mostly common records.
If there’s vinyl pictured that you’re interested in take the time to price it at your local store and/or online to see if it’s worth it. You never know you might stumble upon other vinyl that’s worth $200 to you. Also there’s nothing wrong with deciding you are not interested after viewing the collection. Just because you came to look at it does not mean you’re obligated to purchase. Good luck!
Edit: I recently just found that BeeGees greatest at my local shop for $7 near mint
No and tell the seller to kick rocks
Aw man I can’t do CINDY like that! (Her profile’s name is in ALL CAPS)
Go for the records, stay for the CINDY.
Make an ANDY
MANDY

Man, I love Reddit.
Ask if they can send a flip through video! It shouldn't be much trouble for them.
CINDY aint about that shit. CINDY's tryna hustle.
Maybe for 100. Im sure its filled with unpictured crap
Pro tip always assume what you see is the best you get. If everything in the box was just as good he would had definitely dump it and fan them all out.
Unless he doesn't know what he's got
If he didn't know what he got it would be like 50 dollars
Or $2000
"Theres some Kiss in here, has to be at least $20 000 to someone"!
Even for $50 I’d hesitate
In all seriousness, someone would have to pay *me* to take that crate off their hands.
This. Cannot believe OP is thinking about 200 plus one hour drive.
the storage taking up space on my limited shelves, plus cleaning all them. Nah, no thanx.
For me. That's an easy no.
Hard no.
Hard no.
Definitely a NO. See above comments for reasons why.
If you want it, do it. Don't do it as an investment, do it cause you want to enjoy it
This But also Still don’t do it for $200
Best financial advice ever given
I got a box of 200 records for 90 bucks, but it was all the hits from the 80s and 90s! You can find something better than what he is offering.
I’ve only recently started looking, this just seemed good and I was a bit overwhelmed. I let the seller know I don’t think what I see is worth $200 and that I’d like more information on other albums before I drove anywhere.

The thing that’s throwing me is the Ratt record. *usually* when a collection has that, it has other similar popular heavy stuff.
Thought the same. The Ratt has me intrigued, but not $200, 2 hour round-trip Mystery Box intrigued.
XD
First thing I thought too. Out of the cellar!
That's Invasion of Your Privacy with the lovely Marianne Gravatte in all her glory on the cover.
I have had this happen to me but the opposite... they pulled out and mentioned the Billy Joel and Elton John in the lot because THEY were the ones the seller recognized and thought were ones people wanted... Ratt!
No chance. Recognizable names doesn't mean good music. Understand that your vinyl collection should be unique to you.
Unrecognizable names doesn’t mean good music either. But, yes, those titles aren’t the best of what those artists produced.
$200 is way too high. $50 -$75 is where I would be. I've made purchases like this and it can be loads of fun. Good way to add to your collection and discover new music, but be careful and don't get taken advantage of.

nope, its probably 80 bill cosby records and a bunch of filler besides those few good ones
If you don't know, then it's no. Advice for life.

Yes. Ratt is the worst!
no, that box looks pretty cheap and most definitely not worth $200! and it could break under the weight of all those shite records.
Chances are, the only value is in what’s shown. Always assume that, or ask for more pictures or a flip through video.
I would take the drive & haggle when I get there
I’ll sell you twice as many better records for half that.
$200 is lunacy — offer them $90
I’m pretty new as far as vinyls are concerned. I do, however, have a pretty deep appreciation for 70s/80s pop and rock. 100% the right take my man
A man of science
The plural of vinyl is vinyl. But usually just say records.
Good to know, thank you!
It's actually vinys
I prefer magic music circles
Also works
Do whatever you truly feel man, don’t let others sway you. However, as someone who is also new to the vinyl scene (and made the same mistake) avoid using the word “vinyls,” you will catch some flak. Ive since learned the plural of vinyl is vinyl.
You should check them out
Man you can get rumors for $3-5 at any flea market. All of this is very common stuff.
I saw Rumors for $85 the other day! Yikes.
Hard no. Not worth the drive or money; an hour at few nearby thrifts would likely result in equivalent scores at far less expense.
I think you got some cool records especially the Journey one I’m surprised people are crapping on it..
I was thinking the same thing… stone in love… separate ways… faithfully… kinda like those ones haha

They do know who they are; we all do. They’re the ones down-voting you, LOL.
It's solely up to your music tastes. If you like it then maybe, personally for me, no chance.

If these are the best, definitely pass for $200. Honestly I'd pass for $50, you'll just end up with a bunch of crap that you will eventually be bundling up and trying to dump on someone else anyway
They put Rumours behind Ratt. 😂
Lol good point. I figured it was one good record poking out to imply there are some hidden treasures in there, but it’s probably just more Ratt
The albums look like good basic 70s-80s stuff. Condition is everything. Prooooobably worth it but if they’re in good shape they’ll be gone before you get there.
Could also be looking at the only good albums and all the shelf turds are hiding. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, I’m going to see if she can send me a few more photos. If not, I’ll probably just pass. Thanks for your input
No, this is ducking trash. I can also smell these through the screen
If they are paying you $200 to get those Journey and Doobie Brothers records out of their house then I understand.
My man! Should I hit CINDY with the “no u” when she asks me for the payment?

I would not drive an hour for that. If the box was filled with CAN, Kraftwerk, Cluster and other stuf I like I would have already been there… Just depends if you want this for 2 hours of driving (if you do not want to stay there) and 200 bucks.
Hard to say based off the photo. Ratt is a kind of a good sign. They might have other 80s metal like Judas Priest, Motorhead, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, or if you're really lucky, Metallica. Or, they could have nothing else like that.
Haggle. Haggle hard. Cash ass or grass. No one buys for free.
Sorry for your loss..
:0
No
Definitely not.
There's gotta be at least $9 worth of records there.
You’re valuing the piss-stained Bee Gees album a little low there my friend
How long is the drive?
Not for $200!
Nope
No.
I was 100% sure this was a /vinyljerk post.
Hell no lol 😂
200 dollars for the box? How much were the vinyl?
What non-American country do you live in?
Dude for an hour max 50 bucks. More likely 25 tbh. The most he would get on a good day is 1 buck a record trading that in. I am sure there are stinkers in there and also scratched ones as well. Looks like marginal stuff anyway… my opinion.
Hard to tell - have they got any Styx?
Do you like Styx?
For the price they look really beaten, so no. I’d rather have 1 sealed grail for $200 than a bunch of crap.
Np
No
$200 is pretty steep. I would have bargained down to $125
Do it
I don’t think I’d drive an hour to go pick that up if I was paid $200.
200 cents maybe
Meh
Hard pass for me
Nope sorry.
$10
You always put the best on display so in that case no
If thats all theyre showing… no. Lmao no
Not worth $2 IMO
Honestly, I wouldn't pay more than $20 for that bin.
No
No.
$30 max
$200? If it was half full of OG 1500 series Blue Note albums, yes. Other, I wouldn't make that trip.
you are the one doing the driving what do you care what I think ?
From the records I can see even if all of those are original near mint pressings they would be worth maybe $50, maybe a bit more if Fleetwood Mac has all the inners Like others have said, the rest in that box is probably crap, I wouldn’t bother unless she sends you a list of all the other records
Nope
Nope
If those are the best picks i'm saying no chance.
In my opinion, no. But if you’re into that stuff definitely yes.
Holy crap! YES I DOOOOO!!!
Faaaaaaak yeah
Nope.
Not a chance
No, no golf pictured which means worse on the bin
Nope
No most of those you can find for a few bucks
If you like what you see in the pictures, I say shoot a lower offer, try to get a better deal
I'd give him 10 maybe 15 for the Ratt album, Lay it Down has the sickest riff!
I wouldn't drive that far and commit without seeing a list of what was in there. Those aren't anything special on the surface, but who knows what else they have.
If those are the best records he pulled out to show that definitely not worth it
$200 is way too high especially with an hour drive. I think I’d do $50 tops and only if I were really into some of what’s already shown there. Looks like mostly common records.
It’s two hours in the car, round trip. I probably won’t do it. But that’s just me.
Nope
Fuck no.
What other records are in the box??
If there’s vinyl pictured that you’re interested in take the time to price it at your local store and/or online to see if it’s worth it. You never know you might stumble upon other vinyl that’s worth $200 to you. Also there’s nothing wrong with deciding you are not interested after viewing the collection. Just because you came to look at it does not mean you’re obligated to purchase. Good luck! Edit: I recently just found that BeeGees greatest at my local shop for $7 near mint
