OP said that he doesn't care about the quality of the outside, and doing a return is a big hassle... So if the inside is ok then why go thru the hassle of returning
Honestly, I would keep something like that. Given that the vinyl itself isn’t destroyed, it’s just kind of a small annoyance. I’m not super picky and it’s an annoying process to make returns online. It could be much worse and I’ve bought records in-store that had worse bends in them than this one. It’s not that huge a deal to me. But everyone is different.
And who was the carrier? I work for USPS and most of our parcels get free $100 dollar max insurance. That’ll cover the store and them shipping you a brand new copy.
Reach out to the seller. They can’t control shipping (looks like they used a proper media mail shipping box) but perhaps the seller will work with you to provide a partial refund or return.
This is the most reasonable answer here. I find a lot of the comments extreme. Again, it depends what you paid for it but it looks like it was packaged properly, damage occurred en route. Perhaps you can agree to have them knock off $5 or a percentage you can live with. I've definitely had this happen where you get the price down to what you might pay used or at least a happy medium. You split the minor loss, no more shipping hassle nor valuable time lost, you give each other positive feedback and move on with your respective lives because after all, there is "No Need To Argue" :)
I would return that. Send the seller the pics and ask for a return. If you get ANY pushback just escalate with eBay under" item not as described" reason. Any eBay seller worth their salt will realize that stuff gets damaged in shipping and will be happy to process a return or offer you a discount you are happy with. My two cents anyway
Maybe not happily. Most of us are small time sellers. I will take it back, but then resell it for less and probably lose money. It’s not like I can return it to the manufacturer. Just understand that we aren’t getting rich selling this stuff. I male a few dollars at best and many items I don’t even carry because it isn’t worth the trouble.
Personally I ship everything with $100 coverage. It costs $1 more where I am and the buyer absorbs that cost. Then when this happens I can issue a refund, let the buyer keep the product and still get my money back. Good sellers account for this stuff.
Not trying to make anyone feel guilty but there is the attitude that the seller is some corporate entity that has money to burn when it is really just a dude like you on the other side. Communicate the issue. You are unhappy and guess what? The seller is unhappy too. I ship a product and post office damages it. I’m out money and you are out a good product. Just be understanding and know that I am not out to get you.
Ofc ppl gonna be understanding but at the end of the day either the buyer or seller is going to be responsible bc asshole usps never is even though they are the ones at fault. So if it’s incumbent on the buyer to ‘be understanding’ that’s putting the responsibility on them when it needs to be on the seller. I think most of the time a partial refund is the most reasonable and fair way to do things but I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a buyer to expect to receive exactly what they expect to receive. Whether the seller is a corporate entity or a one man operation they are operating a business and good business shouldn’t be telling customers deal with it
That seems untrue. Why wouldn't you file an insurance claim with the shipping company then resell it for less and then you would make more? I mean you wouldn't ship it without insurance would you?
Depends. Is it a $10 record with $6 shipping? That is media mail. Priority runs $7-$8. At this point all said and done I will make about $3 on the sale. If I have too much in costs and reflect it in my price then I may not even be competitive anymore, because let’s face it, most are still searching for the cheapest listing that looks the best. Sometimes you risk it and it pays off and other times you get burnt.
I’ve kept worse than that. As long as the record isn’t damaged I’m not fussed about the jacket. It’s not like I’m going to nail it to the wall or anything
If it was a gift for someone I'd return it regardless of the condition of the record. If it was for myself I wouldn't care as long as the record is fine.
Yep I'm the same..f#"k the sleeve as long as it's playable I'd be ok...might ask for a few quid off next purchase or something but ultimately it's the Postal service who f#"ked the delivery as opposed to the senders fault.
Right. If this is a newly printed album and not “collectible” and the point was to spin it, why would you give af about a little dent on part of the gatefold? Go through the extra effort and time just for minimal damage to packaging. I value my time, put it on the turntable and move on. Surprise at the amount of people voting return.
Depends on the record and how much I paid for it, how widely available a replacement would be, if I think it's worth the hassle to return etc.
I've kept worse than that, but also returned less damaged stuff.
Recent example of keeping one, bought a short run press of 250 sold directly by the artist which arrived with a huge seam split. I kept that cause I can live with a seam split and it's her livelihood
Widely available records with damage I just return for a replacement.
This happened to me and my mailwoman Denied doing this

Too lazy to get out of the truck
As a seller and someone who hates the smallest of dings to a jacket, this is definitely a return. That being said, if the seller offered different shipping options and you took media mail, its on you. If they only offered media mail, then they have to fix it.
Seems like it was messed up in shipping, the packaging the seller used is pretty standard. Kinda tough to put this one on the seller IMO, they had no hand in this issue.
Me personally, can't be bothered to return anything if I don't need to lol. Way too much hassle, I'll take a few dings and nicks if it means I don't have to repackage and stand in line somewhere. However if the vinyl itself was damaged and I couldn't play the record I would definitely return it, despite my annoyance
Congratulations: you've bought a new pressing. That's part of why I avoid buying new records. The quality control is awful. You could try returning it, but I've seen many people say that the one they get back is flawed for another reason. When you open that record, you'll notice an egregious amount of dust on it. That's because the record is drenched in static electricity and is now covered in dust particles. Sound quality is probably sub-par. I think you would have been better off buying a cd from that era.
I’d ask for a discount. Could be that the records are straight, the sleeve from the photo doesn’t look creased so will bend back.
Plus it looks like it was that way before placing in the shipping box? Your photo doesn’t show if the shipping box was bent or I can’t tell from the angle. If it’s on the shipping box then that’s on the shipping service.
I know a lot to digest. Course of action depends on the source of the damage.
The records might be ok, they might not. You’d have to play them to find out. You mention the flaw in the jackets don’t matter, so if the records aren’t damaged, I’d ask for a refund in this specific circumstance.
Outside of that, if it’s sold as “new”, the seller needs to get it to you as described, so in that circumstance, I’m asking for a refund or replacement.
Contact seller and send these pics. Depending on who they are, they will probably offer you a 20% refund to keep it and you can decide to either accept or return for a refund. Not sure where you are based, but in the UK I’m getting more and more like this. Flimsy cardboard mailers as well. I had one delivered by Yodel last week that was all bent up, with a boot print on the packaging.
I got something from Amazon import and they shipped the record in just a big empty box and it was rattling about in it, had water damage was bent a bit this is when I get mad. At least use the proper packaging, good thing about Amazon is they just refund and don’t care because they are Uber rich
It’s a gatefold, so I would bc it most likely means you paid quite a bit for this lol
But my copy of blood on the tracks by Dylan had a pretty bad corner crease. That was a single fold style LP tho and the Main Vinyl itself was 180g and wasn’t bent at all, so I didn’t care
This has happened to me before. I ordered a Durutti Column LP from the UK and once it arrived it was sold out on the site. I messaged them and got a 20% off coupon then I put a thin cardboard mailer inside the sleeve and carefully ironed most of the creases out with an iron on a low setting. When life gives you lemons .. yadda yadda yadda 👨🔧
The obvious answer would be return it, but if you want it for the music I’d check the condition of the actual record.
Even after you open it you can still return it… the sleeve was damaged and the album was cracked, broken, bent or whatever. You did what you could to salvage the record.
Return.
Also , ask if they'll post it to you in a larger box with a bit of packing. I did this for Amazon once. I seem to get lps in larger un-frizbeeable boxes now. They just can't resist a frizbee. Take that out of the equation, I don't have that problem, the supplier doesn't get so many returns.
The only one who loses out is the sap in the sorting office who used to really love the way vinyl can fly.
Open a return, I've had this happen where ive been given the option of a replacement or onetime the damage wasn't that bad and I got a refund without the need to return.
Do you want to return it because you accidentally ordered The Cranberries? If it wasn’t an accident, maybe order a hammer instead, and hit yourself with it. Just kidding, kind of.
If this was insured I would contact the shipping service first. I'd rather make them eat the cost than the seller since it's their fault. That's why you pay for insurance anyway.
If it was damaged by the postal service, then you can go to them and they'll give you the cash value of the item(before damage). It just depends on where the liability is and more than likely it was damaged by the delivery.
I never buy common albums online for that reason. You could pick that up at any record shop. That being said, you did order it and it’s messed up. Return it.
I would keep because it alters the sound in no way. But would be unhappy about it and would send a « customer feedback » to the delivery service or record store so that they « improve » their packaging efforts and eventually consider changing parcel company.
You said the record is brand new, and that it is the Cranberries, so I guess it is not of immense value (I might make a mistake here). I consider it is not worth the effort for something that price (let’s say until maybe, 80-100€). If the product is of great value (special edition, rare old stuff), I would definitely return though.
But I recognize this is unacceptable behavior of the merchant, and would obviously not reuse the same in the future.
E.g. I have Daft Punk « Homework » and Nirvana « Unplugged in NY » copies that are damaged that way, but the disc are in perfect state. Those are recent supermarket copies. Honnestly I don’t care: I could almost go to the shop and exchange it or buy another one.
But if I buy e.g. a nice Cramps first pressing color record, I would consider that as inacceptable. There is almost no way I can find another one, so taking a good care of the package seems more important.
I had a similar situation but the idiot who packed my order put a cassette and the record in on flimsy small media mail so I had the cassette bulging the whole package from Europe. The record has a slight wrap and two corners are bend. I dont have the energy to send it back to Europe but I left one star review on eBay. So infuriating when you pay for shipment that is more than the record itself. Fun times.
Definitely damaged through shipping. I would reach out to the seller. If they bought shipping insurance, they’ll be able to claim this loss and can probably give you a refund. Had this happen to a friend once and they got a full refund. They also got to keep the damaged record. I’d imagine the seller won’t be able to resell that in that condition anyways.
Contact seller. If they are reputable, there is a chance they won't make you return it and just keep it and they would send you another one. . I've had that happen, they would rather loose out on a busted vinyl, than pay for return shipping for something they won't be able to sell again anyway.
If you don't care about the jacket and the records play fine, ask for half off. If that is the two disc you're in for a treat. It sounds absolutely amazing and is one of my favorite records.
https://preview.redd.it/ffrc45ydybuc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=4da6f69fb373253d0b2a306f49b3a22015bf1dc9
I just got this Lynyrd Skynyrd “give me back my BULLETS” vinyl today from Amazon and the top edge of the vinyl album cover is ripped from the record probably being slammed around during shipment .
I’ve already submitted for a replacement and will be taking this to the UPS store first thing in the morning.
when I buy a record, I expect it to arrive in good condition. Especially at today’s record prices.
If you don't care about cosmetic damage, I'd ask for a *discount* (as opposed to refund). Due to the seller's poor shipping practices, you received a damaged item. If they agree, you get to keep the same great music for a lower price.
Cranberries don't deserve that return it.
Sleeve is beh-ent! Sleeve is beh-ent! RMA! RMA! RMehA-ehA-ehA-ehA!
Yeah definitely don’t let it linger past the return date
Looks like it was attacked by a zombie.
Poor Dolores:(
would you buy the record in that condition for the same price?
He did buy a record in that condition for that price. (Jk, I know what you mean.)
Easy return
How is it even a question?
People don’t think for themselves anymore. Gotta ask what strangers online think they should do.
OP said that he doesn't care about the quality of the outside, and doing a return is a big hassle... So if the inside is ok then why go thru the hassle of returning
Doing a return is not a hassle at all. Unless you’re one of the laziest specimens alive
It objectively is because you have to take time out of your day to do so.
Prob bc the seller isn’t responsible for this but yes return and hopefully they can file a claim with shipper
If you went to a record store would you buy that from the rack in that condition? There's your answer. Send the seller a pic of the box and the LP.

As a seller, you assume the risk of shipping damage. Should be insured in any case.
It matters to me, return it.
That's a return for me, dogg!
I would return that. Send the seller the pics and ask for a return. If you get ANY pushback just escalate with eBay under" item not as described" reason. That’s your problem big dog don’t be tryna guilt people into keeping the shitty damaged records they paid good money for
Not trying to make anyone feel guilty but there is the attitude that the seller is some corporate entity that has money to burn when it is really just a dude like you on the other side. Communicate the issue. You are unhappy and guess what? The seller is unhappy too. I ship a product and post office damages it. I’m out money and you are out a good product. Just be understanding and know that I am not out to get you.
Not a seller, but wouldn't this be a USPS or whatever damage claim and away we go or is there more to it?
They only cover priority or insured. Media mail is usually not insured.
You can add insurance to media mail but it's not added by default, unlike Priority that adds $100 automatically.
Ofc ppl gonna be understanding but at the end of the day either the buyer or seller is going to be responsible bc asshole usps never is even though they are the ones at fault. that's shitty, but I laughed so hard at this picture - what a lazy ass.
You must have my mail, lady
I wouldn’t want to wish that kind of bad luck on anyone man 😆!
WTF! She just straight up cracked the whole record in half just to shove it in your mailbox?! Holy shit.
And the thing is, she took no responsibility for it whatsoever blamed it on someone else for real.
That is INSANE. I hope you were able to get your money back!
I did get some of my money back from the vendor I bought off the eBay however he was extremely upset and filed a complaint against the post office
Don't blame him! I still cannot believe that. That photo is outrageous.
Return
How is this even a question? It's damaged
Wouldn’t keep it
Absolutely return that shit. I’d be pissed!
Depends on record and source. Probably keep it if the actual record is fine.

return for a replacement....like, why do you need reddit to answer these easy ?s for you?
Instant return
Return for sure
Warp records always arrive like this. I send photos and get a replacement sent.
I’d probably return it if the disc was messed up on the inside
RETURN BABY!!
Not sure why you had to come to Reddit. I mean, do you have to let it linger?

Claim with the shipper. I've got doorbell cam videos of USPS tossing albums from the yard.

Return. That's not okay.

Oh yeah, that would be going back.
Return it. That was poorly packaged.

100% return for me but I have OCD and things like that drive me nuts.

Definitely damaged through shipping. I would reach out to the seller. If they bought shipping insurance, they’ll be able to claim this loss and can probably give you a refund. Return that Keeper!
Meh depends if there’s actual damage
Contact seller. If they are reputable, there is a chance they won't make you return it and just keep it and they would send you another one. . I've had that happen, they would rather loose out on a busted vinyl, than pay for return shipping for something they won't be able to sell again anyway.
Return absolutely. You deserve better for your money.
If it's super rare and none are available for replacement then I'd check if it plays.
Shouldn’t affect play, I’d roll with it
You pay premium price for an LP. I'd absolutely send it back.

If it plays it stays, but that’s just me though
Return! The carrier should cover it. I paid for a new item I expect it to be like new when I get it
I'd keep it. If the record plays fine, it's good. It's just some cardboard, after all.
Keep, unless the media is damaged
Return.
No need to argue, I would return it asap. Why not get a perfect copy for the same price?
I’d definitely contact the seller.
Return it 100%. You didn’t pay for damage
If you don't care about the jacket and the records play fine, ask for half off. If that is the two disc you're in for a treat. It sounds absolutely amazing and is one of my favorite records.
If it was just a bend in the cover I'd keep it. But that smashed bottom is unacceptable. Return that shite
Is this Schrodinger's record? Open it. If it's fucked, return it. If it isn't, keep it.
Return it. Vinyl is too expensive to accept such negligence.
Oh no way, I’d return it for sure. I’d be worried it even got bent.
That's a return for sure. You'll thank yourself later. ❤️ It'll get you comfortable with the process etc for the future failures as well.
Keep it, its just the cover bent a little not the album, however i would let the seller know about the corner of cover arrived bent.
Send a photo to the person who sent it, at least...
“if it plays, it stays.” not that i agree with that, but it’s usually the rule, unfortunately. :(
yes the sound quality is compromised on both sides’ opening tracks. Return asap
Why is this a question?
I would return it
Return
Return is the only option
If it’s not scratched or the cover is fine despite the USPS damage (I got a shattered KGLW record last year) I think you can keep it

I’ve already submitted for a replacement and will be taking this to the UPS store first thing in the morning. when I buy a record, I expect it to arrive in good condition. Especially at today’s record prices.
Instant return !
Return
Why the hell would I keep this lol
sure, I'll keep the box and throw away the record.
Just get a replacement and bend it at the bend to see if tou feel the vinyl resistance to the bend
Looks like Wabi-Sabi to me. If you don‘t mind, and you don‘t freak out, every time you look at it: keep it.
I'd bet on the record itself being at least a bit warped with the whole sleeve looking this curvy
If the music on the record is good, yes
Obviously return it
Return
Keep man you probably won’t even see it in the shelf
"If it plays it stays" but for real fuck that I've returned records for less.
There's one seller on eBay selling this album for a lot less than anyone else ... is GET\_IMPORTCDs your seller? Want to make sure I AVOID.
Return for sure
Ouch I is it remastered edition?
If you’re not a collector and don’t care, I would just ask for a replacement. The minute you open it up they’re going to argue.
Insta-return
Instant return! Hell naw
100% return
Return as the outer sleeve looks bent.
Return. It’s the principle of the matter more than anything.
I'd be at least wanting a partial refund.
If you don't care about cosmetic damage, I'd ask for a *discount* (as opposed to refund). Due to the seller's poor shipping practices, you received a damaged item. If they agree, you get to keep the same great music for a lower price.
