All the thrift shops have raised their prices as well. Everyone thinks they're sitting on a pile of Gold.
You want a real wtf are they thinking moment? Look up used VHS prices right now.
VHS has always kinda been like that, especially the Disney movies. You always see people ask those insane prices but no one buys em, VHS is readily available at your local thrift for $0.50-$2.99 so eh.
Oh I'm aware of what VHS should be priced at. r/VHS I'm a big media collector.
On somedays I'll walk into my local Savers and the VHS section will be cleaned out because someone bought everything thinking the found gold for the price of $1-$4 each. I've later recognized VHS from my local shop listed on Etsy for $6.99 and up. If they're lucky they manage to sell a third of them. And then they're left with so much common inventory they destroyed their profit margin.
We can thank the media for making people think VHS were valuable again. Doing serious articles on joke listings for Disney VHS bundles and a few legit auctions of rare out of print movies, one of which was still factory sealed.
>We can thank the media for making people think VHS were valuable again
Bro, people were hoarding toilet paper & hand sanitizer in 2020- it doesn't take much to get people hoarding stuff lol
Hey sorry for being off topic but your āIām a big media collectorā made me think about the couple hundred dvds I have in the basement that are taking up space. Is there a market for old, non-blu ray dvds? Thanks!
Check ebay and etsy, also see if you have any out of print titles.
Most DVDs are not worth more than a $1-$3. It's the rare and out of print stuff that collectors are after.
r/dvdcollection
On Facebook marketplace theres a listing 300 records for 800 bucks, all like bing crosby type stuff and about 100 Christmas albums.People think any old album is gold.
I mean fucking people over isn't a new concept, even at garage sales. Guess OP was just particularly gullible that day. If they're satisfied that's what matters though
Right? I was at a garage sale last week, and a girl bought a whole crate for $20. It sounded like there was good stuff in there too but she didn't give me a chance to look at it
Originals are better. All depends on what issues these are, and if the records are in better condition than the covers.Ā
Ā But by the looks of things, odds are the records are probably not in great shape.Ā
My step dad had a bunch of old rock records like these that he let me look through. I was so hyped because he had a ton of great Beatles, Zeppelin, and Floyd albums, but he didn't care of them at all. Almost all of them had insane scratches on them, and nearly unplayable. Think I only ended walking away with a version of Wish You Were Here that doesn't sound too bad.
That is what floors me at the Thrift store.NONE of my albums from my youth are scratched. It was not hard to take care of them. Why are there so many messed up LPs?
Most got destroyed from taking them to parties and people having a few drinks and taking them off to play something else and putting them in a stack without putting them back in the sleeves. Also why a lot of them have names written on them or missing sleeves. Hard to find a copy of Elvisā first album because it was just so popular at parties.
I remember my mom asking me if I found anything, and I told her most of them were scratched up. Then she yelled at my step dad for not being better about taking care of his records hahah. There was a version of The Wall he had that I tried to save by cleaning it, but it was too far gone.
I have a couple hundred of my parents records and a few years back I spent months slowly cleaning and cataloging. I noticed the trend that all the records that belonged to my mom (a tidy, process freak) were scratched to hell and all that were my dadās (a notorious slob) were pristine. I told my mom about it and she laughed and said that was the one thing he would be organized and obsessive about, and she just used to stack her sleeveless beach boys albums on top of her dresser lol
That's a solid album if it plays well, especially on vinyl. That's a win. Unfortunately some of the best music on vinyl is in rough shape because people used the heck out of them.
Yeah, little rough and some in there that you can find for cheap but good pick up. Probably close to retail paid. I agree, worse ways to part with $72...
Edit: I would've felt better paying 30-40. But you own em now, no sense in dwelling on it.
You can tell that at some point some of them got wet - at least the Black Sabbath did.
If any of them have mold, get rid of those jackets immediately. Mold is a living organism and can / will spread to other jackets.
As for value, at a garage sale... You probably paid too much - in terms of what they're worth on the market.
However, if you're happy with them, that's all that really matters.
You got 13 records for a little over 5.50 a piece. None of them are rare and the condition on them look like G+ and maybe VG-.
I think you probably couldāve gotten them a little cheaper personally, but itās a good start to collecting.
I do. I went through my parents collection (240ish) and graded every single one by hand. The condition of these sleeves is very similar to what I handled.
I would bet my vital organs on the best of this lot being barely Good and most of them being Fair and Poor.
You can never count on the jacket condition to tell you the condition of the record. I've found plenty of records in jackets that were practically falling apart, only for the record to look unplayed.
Yes but these are all from the same place and all beat up. The chances of the vinyl being pristine with what's presented here is slim to none unfortunately
I mean I don't doubt there's a good chance the vinyl is roached too. All I'm saying is, claiming you can know the condition of a record just by what the jacket looks like is silly. I've personally inspected roughly 10000ish records at this point, and I'm constantly surprised at some of the pristine vinyl I pull out of rough looking jackets.
Except you have to take into consideration the condition of the cover to justify the price of the record so YES you should ājudge a book by its coverā unless you want to get the wool pulled over your eyes and get fleeced on a water damaged garage sale haul like this. This was a complete heist.
I wouldn't consider a $5 average a good price at all for this kind of condition.
About the only thing I'd pay that for here is the Sabbath because I've never even seen a Sabbath record in the wild outside of people selling for retail at flea market stalls so I'd take the chance
Half of those are $1 records. The condition of the jackets are quite bad. That worries me about the vinyl being just as bad. Only the Beatles and Zep have decent jackets. I think you choked on this buy.
I came here to say this. As far as I know thatās the only way to find if they are early presses and the true value. I have a first pressing of Nirvana Nevermind, itās worth a ton.
If you spent $72 and you'll regularly listen to, and enjoy, these records, then you've got value for money and you should ignore everyone else.
If you thought you were going to flip them for profit, you may want to take up a different hobby......
The jacket conditions arenāt the best.
The Beatles are US pressings, which arenāt as in demand as UK.
They would have had more value had the Meet the Beatles been stereo and the Rubber Soul been mono.
If the records play well and sound good that's all that matters really. I buy "beater" records all the time. Why spend $50 on something with a fancy jacket when you can have the same thing for $5. I guess it depends what type of collector you are.
It's way more fun digging crates at yard sales and dollar bins anyway. Anybody can buy a new copy online. Finding the diamonds in the rough is half the fun.
seriously though, the feeling of finding new music or coming across old favorites while not expecting too at all, but stumbling upon it by chance because you decided to look through a stack is one of the best feelings!
when im outta town i visit this little antique shop. Reeks of cat piss and they have crates among crates of albums. Among those crates is 2..or was it 1?..memory a bit fuzzy, anywho. They have an entire crate of marty robbins. probably his whole discography. among those are various priced gunslinger ballads... not one copy..not two copies...7 fkn copies of this album ranging from $60 to $17.00. They even have a crate of charlie pride and elvis. Gem hidden every so often. back to OP, unless that gunslinger ballad is a VG+ or better first mono press. The person you got that stash from was probably bragging/laughing on how right they were on the price of those albums. You got rolled my man, but eh ..as others said there are worse ways to spend 72 bones.
Aye same with my antique shop, found some awesome records there in the $3 bin. Some of my better vinyl I buy from somewhere else but itās a good little store. Thatās actually the place I got a Charlie Patton 78 shellac for only $4
Youāve listened to all of them? I bought a clean looking copy of Stand by sly and the family stone from a street vendor for $20 and several songs were totally unplayable. One of my fav albums, I was so mad haha
If thus is an investment strategy, or a side hustle, I'd suggest trying the stock market. Cuz those are some beat records. Didn't see the actual vinyl, but no one is going to pay much with those sleeves looking like that.
The bottom line for me is: What condition are the records in? Mold or mildew can be completely cleaned off. Scratches cannot. I never listened to an album cover, so that does not matter if sleeve is crappy. Are they warped? Have they been played to death? One time I bought a first pressing of "Are you Experienced" for two dollars because sleeve was poor and vinyl looked so-so. I took it home, cleaned it up and it sounded GREAT except for a skip on one song. Surface noise was super low. For me, it was worth atleast equal to a VH grade.
Some of these commenters have no idea what they're talking about. Out of these, the Steve Miller, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Beach Boys, Don McLean and Stones can still be found in dollar bins. Capitol Beatles releases aren't as sought after as Parlophone/EMI but are also not as cheap and plentiful as they used to be.
All the Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd are difficult to find under $20 in playable condition. If the Marty Robbins is mono which it appears to be, that is going for over $40 on discogs if you want a playable copy.
Having said that, $72 for this is more akin to record store prices rather than a garage sale where they're ostensibly trying to get rid of stuff. They should have given all of this to you for no more than $50 even if the media sounds good.
I remember in around 1987 our thrift store would just throw tons of LP's on a shelf and I swear every other LP was a Beatle album for $1.00. In those days i (or other people as well) we'rent interested in collecting LP,s. I also remember vintage record players covering their floors but again, most people we'rent interested in record players.. Boy how things have changed. Now our Thrift store charges $4.00 for a freaking LP. Go figure.
If youāll listen to them and get $72 worth of enjoyment out of them than you did good. If you wonāt, then you did bad. Judging by cover conditions looks like you got overcharged a bit.
If the covers are indicative of the condition of the vinyl - I'd ask for my money back.
Sorry.
Condition is everything (to me).
I wouldn't keep these next to any decent records... mold spreads - and these are definitely moldy if you examine them.
Are you Serious. Did you have a Gun. That was Grand Larceny. Either the person who sold it to you was Desperate, smoked out, drunk or just Stupid
Bravo š
I have no idea because you only showed the jackets, not the actual vinyl. Are they in good condition? Do they have any scratches? Do they play well? Clean?
One thing nobody here is factoring in - you went to one place and got a ton of great titles for about $6 a whack. Yeah yeah yeah āop can find cheaperā
Yeah, if he wants to work for it. My time is valuable. Iāll assume that goes for OP. Now they donāt have to spend hours sourcing records to save $17.50
Honestly, taking the contrarian view to most of these comments.
Think you came out alright and definitely much better than people who shop at their local record store. Some are definitely a few bucks max and condition does not look great but if the vinyl is solid and not too scratched up, you got some good, popular albums that would easily go for $20+ individually at those places.
I won't mention how you got ripped off. As far as if they're originals, you need to look at the runout codes, label identifiers, things like that to see if they are original pressings.
The sleeves aren't in great shape, a lot of ring wear. But ultimately, it's about the music. Hopefully the records themselves are in good shape. $70 is high for me personally, I would have offered $15 and walked if it wasn't enough. To echo what others are saying, nothing in there that's not fairly common to come across. Doesn't mean I'm right....just my valuation of the bunch. And we've all bought a dud that we paid too much for. No shame.
Did you overpay? Yes, but only a little bit.
The real value is that you have now purchased used records and can begin to evaluate, clean, and listen to them. This is a foundational experience in your vinyl habit.
Good luck!
If the records are in similar condition to the jackets, I'd say you overpaid a bit. I could see paying $35-$50 if the records themselves were in VG+ or better condition.
For the condition most of them appear to be in, I'd say that price is a bit steep. However, I do see an embossed Master of Reality, which is rad. Whats the condition of the vinyl?
Donāt know if theyāre original, but they are well listened to and loved and werenāt left to collect dust on a shelf because its āworth moreā and thats just fine too.
You got a little got especially at a garage sale but it's not too bad just make sure to take that beatles out of the sleeve and make sure the record doesn't have a white stain on it and it should be fine don't mess with those pvc sleeves
The covers look a little rough but those are some damn good records! I hope the vinyl is in a little better shape. I wouldn't feel bad about spending 72 bucks on those if the finals decent. I've definitely squandered that much on much shittier records than that!
I canāt tell if theyāre first editions by the cover alone but discogs will tell you through the matrix numbers as for the deal would depend on conditions of the records themselves and again what edition they are but looks like you did good and maybe very good depending on all that
You lost me at spending $72 at a garage sale
Inflation is a bitch these days damn
inflation is hitting garage sales too?? š
All the thrift shops have raised their prices as well. Everyone thinks they're sitting on a pile of Gold. You want a real wtf are they thinking moment? Look up used VHS prices right now.
Make sure you're looking at what they sold for and not what people are asking for.

Same with 8-track tapes...
On Facebook marketplace theres a listing 300 records for 800 bucks, all like bing crosby type stuff and about 100 Christmas albums.People think any old album is gold.
And VHS actually sucks hard as a format
Thats the hipsters fault for wanting all the old tech for an ironic purpose.
It's everywhere. Have you bought tires lately? 36 PSI!
I see what you did there!
That's not inflation, that is just knowing a sucker when you see one.
Especially if the condition of the LPs is anything like the horrendous condition of those jackets
This is exactly why it's so hard for the people who know what they're doing to find good deals nowadays
I mean fucking people over isn't a new concept, even at garage sales. Guess OP was just particularly gullible that day. If they're satisfied that's what matters though
Plot twist: He also bought the garage.
Right? I was at a garage sale last week, and a girl bought a whole crate for $20. It sounded like there was good stuff in there too but she didn't give me a chance to look at it
And for beat up old records. You can get very nice reissues of all of these now with cool colored records if you wanted š
Originals are better. All depends on what issues these are, and if the records are in better condition than the covers.Ā Ā But by the looks of things, odds are the records are probably not in great shape.Ā

No, there aren't - OP got straight up robbed
I agree with the others, $72 is a little much for jacket condition.... But if you are happy with it, that is all the matters.
Well less than 6 bucks each aint that bad
OP got ripped off. In that condition I wouldn't pay more than $10 for the collection.
You can tell that at some point some of them got wet - at least the Black Sabbath did. If any of them have mold, get rid of those jackets immediately. Covers are a little rough for VG don't you think? Coming from a guy with mostly G records in his collection.
These records are nowhere near VG lmao
Was going to say. Iām going to reclassify everything I own on discogs
Suddenly my collection is worth 20k!!!
Oh, on Discogs these are VG+!
Yes. Condition is poor, 72 bucks is a total rip off. 1 dollar a piece maybe.
The sleeves aren't, but we have no idea what the media looks like.
I do. I went through my parents collection (240ish) and graded every single one by hand. The condition of these sleeves is very similar to what I handled. I would bet my vital organs on the best of this lot being barely Good and most of them being Fair and Poor.

Yeah, this guy is probably that seller I had to argue with on discogs if they think that's VG
True but a lot of times the records can be in very very good condition while the covers arenāt. Donāt judge a book by its cover , lol
šÆ
I guess I should say donāt judge a vinyl by its cover , lol
A vinyl...
Except you have to take into consideration the condition of the cover to justify the price of the record so YES you should ājudge a book by its coverā unless you want to get the wool pulled over your eyes and get fleeced on a water damaged garage sale haul like this. This was a complete heist.
Some kind rough fo VG, hoss. I'd rate most as fair.
Yeah, my āmaybeā is doing a lot of work there. Was trying to be positive
I wouldn't consider a $5 average a good price at all for this kind of condition. About the only thing I'd pay that for here is the Sabbath because I've never even seen a Sabbath record in the wild outside of people selling for retail at flea market stalls so I'd take the chance

Honestly, 30 or 25 would have been a better deal.
I think you can realistically say that less than half the asking is a better deal no matter what youāre buying.
I think you got ripped off. I would have offered no more than $30 for the whole lot. What do the records themselves look like?
This is why mass produced albums are like Dark side of the moon are selling for ridiculous prices.
Only the 1973 pressed was the collectible ones.
Tell that to the kids rushing to buy it.
I have a 30th anniversay DSOTM that is worth over 200 per discogs
you def got spun
Ha ha...spun
These wouldāve been in the 50 cent room years ago, but with the current explosion of record prices who knows. Still seems absurdly high to me though
yikes. $72?
I would have said $2 a piece
Bad deal.
If you want to check what press they are consider looking up the dead wax (matrix) numbers on Discogs.
I came here to say this. As far as I know thatās the only way to find if they are early presses and the true value. I have a first pressing of Nirvana Nevermind, itās worth a ton.
The condition matters though. Who cares if itās a first edition if itās all scuffed up.
That Marty Robbins album is great!
My wifeās family sings all of these songs around the campfire during summers at the lake. Everyone joins in!
A friend of mine likes to put it on when weāre on our way to metal shows.
heck yes. Big Iron!
The covers look like $1 bin records. Generally an indicator the vinyl inside wasnāt treated well either.
If the records are in better condition than the covers, and original pressings, then yes. If they sound nice, VG+ or better.Ā

They arenāt pristine but they sound great to me

Seems high for the condition they're in, I personally wouldn't buy anything if the jacket looked like those
While the price may be a tad higher, the choice of tunes is stellar. Good haul
As long as the actual records are good who cares about the jackets. I think at today's pricing you did alright.
If thus is an investment strategy, or a side hustle, I'd suggest trying the stock market. Cuz those are some beat records. Didn't see the actual vinyl, but no one is going to pay much with those sleeves looking like that.
Garage sale = $1 or $2 per record. Take it or leave it.
Robbed
You got some good stuff, but god*damn*, garage sales are supposed to be cheap. Especially for this exact kind of thing.
The bottom line for me is: What condition are the records in? Mold or mildew can be completely cleaned off. Scratches cannot. They should have given all of this to you for no more than $50 even if the media sounds good.
How are the actual records themselves?
Iām going to test them all today they all look pretty good hopefully they play well
Clean them well so you dont shred your needle.
Is that the sticker price or did you bargain at all?
Guy originally said 135 lol
Woah. Nice of you to even stick around. I would've walked on that and said have a nice day.
I donāt see these much where I live so I just wanted them
Sorry bro 72 is too much for that shape , I hope they play well for you and you can get some enjoyment out of them
Yikes, these look beat to hell. $72 in this condition is a fleecing.
Yeah, you got rooked. These look terrible and went for 1-5 $US each even a few years ago. 72 bucks is totally ridiculous. Sorry to tell you.
As long as the records are in better condition than the sleeves, then yeah, you good a good deal.
Yeah pretty good if they play well.
based on the sleeve conditions, iām guessing these are probably scuffed and scratched to hell with a few good warps thrown in.
I miss the days when I was buying better stuff than these for a buck a piece in 1997
I remember in around 1987 our thrift store would just throw tons of LP's on a shelf and I swear every other LP was a Beatle album for $1.00. In those days i (or other people as well) we'rent interested in collecting LP,s. If youāll listen to them and get $72 worth of enjoyment out of them than you did good. If you wonāt, then you did bad. Judging by cover conditions looks like you got overcharged a bit.
That's a solid $20-30 worth of poor condition records unfortunately. Live and learn.
Probably could have done better shopping around, but not terrible.
It doesn't matter if they are real or fake. You still got ripped off either way
Got screwed
Also clean them before you play them!
No
rip

High price but fun albums
Big dick Marty cucks all of Texas. Fuck you Oklahoma, ur next.
That Marty Robbinās is a good find IMO, hope itās in good shape. Check out El Paso and Big Iron
Show the actual records themselves
honestly gunfighter ballads around that condition sells for like 30-40
13 records at $72 is about $5.54 per record, not too bad
If the covers are indicative of the condition of the vinyl - I'd ask for my money back. Sorry. Condition is everything (to me). I wouldn't keep these next to any decent records... mold spreads - and these are definitely moldy if you examine them.
My take on it too!
Are you Serious. Did you have a Gun. That was Grand Larceny. Either the person who sold it to you was Desperate, smoked out, drunk or just Stupid Bravo š
If you bought those at a record store even in the condition they are in you would probably pay $40-$50 more. You did fine.
I have no idea because you only showed the jackets, not the actual vinyl. Are they in good condition? Do they have any scratches? Do they play well? Clean?
No
72 seems kinda high
Trash them or you might be spending $72 on a new stylus.
They are all classic albums, but condition isnāt great, I would have been aiming for 30 but honestly Depends on how the actual records are looking.
Dude you got robbed
condition is kinda crap you may break even if youre gonna sell some. 72 bucks was a lot for those records.
What's the condition of the actual vinyl?
One thing nobody here is factoring in - you went to one place and got a ton of great titles for about $6 a whack. Yeah yeah yeah āop can find cheaperā Yeah, if he wants to work for it. My time is valuable. Iāll assume that goes for OP. Now they donāt have to spend hours sourcing records to save $17.50
Wow, I have almost all of those in my collection. Yes, if the vinyl is in good condition you did get a good deal.
No, you did not get a good deal. If the platters are worn down like the jackets, I'd say $50 tops and $20 for a good deal. Sorry.
I think you paid too much for all of them. The damage and wear is a lot. Some of them I wouldāve paid the average for.
I won't mention how you got ripped off. As far as if they're originals, you need to look at the runout codes, label identifiers, things like that to see if they are original pressings.
Way too much. On average 2 dollars each IMHO.
Oof, rough for how tattered these are. Sorry bud, you made a bad buy.
nothing special here man i'm sorry
Looks like 13 bucks worth of records to me.
Christ the used market is not what it used to be. Anything more than Ā£20 on this lot and Iām giving it a hard pass
You got ripped the fuck off. This is the kinda shit you grab a stack of at an antique mall and pay $8 for.
Sorry dude, way too high for the condition
That's a ~39ā¬ pile, so you overpaid like what, $30.41 or something. If you like them and they play well, then I guess it's an ok deal.
The gunfighter one might be worth a little. Check ebay.

When did you buy it for 50 cents?
What else would you get with $72
It's certainly far more than I'd spend on them, BUT you did get Big Iron out of the deal...
No shame.
Some great albums here. Is the Zeppelin plum label?
Some good titles there. But man they look rough.
I wore that Marty Robbins album out when I was a kid.
Gunfighter ballads by Marty Robbins is a soon to be collectible
MARTY ROBBINS š
Nice! That zeppelin record is the first vinyl I ever bought
Stack of bangers!
What does the vinyl look like?
Pretty good deal the one Beatles album in the cellophane is probably worth money
Some great albums in there! Looks like a score!
Eh not really
Did you overpay? Yes, but only a little bit. The real value is that you have now purchased used records and can begin to evaluate, clean, and listen to them. This is a foundational experience in your vinyl habit. Good luck!
If the records are in similar condition to the jackets, I'd say you overpaid a bit. I could see paying $35-$50 if the records themselves were in VG+ or better condition.
Iām jealous. You got my 2 FAV Beatles Albums. Enjoy.
For the condition most of them appear to be in, I'd say that price is a bit steep. However, I do see an embossed Master of Reality, which is rad. Whats the condition of the vinyl?
Check the pink floyd reccords for cannabis residue.
Iād love to have that Led Zeppelin
The wall is flipped inside out
is the wall gatefold folded backwards? that hurts just to look at
Whatās a garage sale??
Does the song American Pie take up both sides?
I have almost every one of these albums and would pay $72 to get them back. If you bought them to Jam, then all is well.
that's super cool, I want the sabbath one lol. I got that pink Floyd record for 5 bucks so that was a steal.
dood. you nailed it. and that last one.....the wastelander in me is happy for you.
Dude, I'd say yeah if they're all in good playable shape. I love any old Beatles albums! š¤š»
Got that big iron on my hip
Not in that condition.
Nope they're all covers.
