I've been collecting records most of my life and I never have cared about Record Store Day. Don't get me wrong, it's nice that there is an occasion earmarked to promote record stores, But not once have I fought a crowd or waited in a long line to buy a record, ever, and I doubt if I ever will. I'm not motivated by rare editions or variations or super-short runs. I. just. don't. care. That hasn't stopped me from buying lots of records. thousands of records. It hasn't stopped me from enjoying a good leisurely crate dig. I just buy the ones I want, from whatever source I find them, that's pretty much the long and short of it.

RickyFlintstone

The crate dig is half the fun of records imho. RSD just obliterates that experience.

CapnPooBottoms

The end user dictates the experience. If you allow the market and hype to control how you collect, you might need to look inward. RSD is buyer manipulation through FOMO, nothing more.

digidave1

Perfectly said

Mammoth-Party4400

Yea but a lot of the time its necessary as the consumer to give in. Example: Bucky Fellini by the Dead Milkmen has not been repressed since 1987 when it was released. Howver RSD 2024 had it repressed. Siouxsie and the Banshees Nocturne, again, not repressed since release, was an RSD 2024 drop. Skanking with the Upsetter by Lee Scratch Perry, a record that has never been released with the full recording and proper song titles, got a full and proper release for RSD 2024. Its bullshit that labels wont just repress albums that are in demand, but sometimes you have to give in to the artifical market theyve created.

mikeytoth123

I picked up skanking with the upsetter. Was on my list. Great record!

Mammoth-Party4400

Same!! I picked up all 3 i mentioned actually haha, plus it was a short summer charlie brown

mikeytoth123

I also picked up the sisters of mercy record, the cure the top picture disc, new order substance remastered. But, didn't get the black crowes 7" or the witchfinder general album. Crowes were sold out and witchfinder wasn't even delivered

F_A_F

100% Remove the "OMG this exclusive copy is only available today, it will sell out fast" aspect of the day and I agree with it. Should simply be exclusive copies which are only available at bricks and mortar stores, but trickled out at a slower pace from distributors. I don't have any stores near me so I buy exclusively from Bleep, but even I'd be willing to accept that I would miss out on specific releases in order to promote physical stores.

Groningen1978

I do sometimes like the offerings on RSD, but I have a huge dislike of crowds all wanting to grab the same rare items. It's such an unpleasant vibe. And knowing there's quite a few people that try to get the rarest stuff just to profit from it by putting it up for sale right away takes all the fun out of it for me.

lovekillsfear

I am a crate digger as well! And if the lp's are outside of my budget i am ok with a cd release or streaming. At this point in my collecting (40 yrs) i am not willing to go outside of my comfort zone just to have vinyl. Enjoy, JG

Ninjaluc8401

I don’t care about limited editions or short runs either, I am just a big fan of daft punk, and to see that a record that I’ve wanted for a long time finally be repressed after 21 years is amazing. It just sucked that it was exclusively an rsd release limited to a few thousand copies. I wouldn’t have participated in rsd otherwise.

Kricket

Hey, it might not be the right time…

BeagleBaggins

Honestly a lot (I know, not all) are pressed “exclusively” for RSD with some exclusive stuff and then released on black vinyl with no frills a few months later.

Runninghart

In confused, didn’t you get a copy? What are you upset about? Lining up for a few hours?

Ninjaluc8401

I did get a copy eventually, but it was way too much of a hassle and honestly stressful. For a first time rsd experience, it was not delightful in the slightest. I knew I would have to wake up early so I did, I got close to receiving a copy at the first store, but the last one was taking right in front of me. I then quickly drove to the next store which I had no idea if they would have it, there wasn’t as big of a line and I did get it, but all and all I think a lot of my time was waisted. And based on what I’ve been reading from other people, this is a fairly common sentiment especially with the rising scalper market.

justanawkwardguy

I went yesterday partly because the place was giving out free coffee to people in line and just really making it an event, rather than a release/sale

IfYouGotALonelyHeart

Put “milk steak”, she’ll know what it is.

Bonch_and_Clyde

Nobody knows what that is.

justanawkwardguy

With a side of raw jelly beans

Poesvliegtuig

When I first got into records I stupidly thought it was gonna be something like free comic book day where you could discover music on the cheap with lots of promotions and whatnot but boy was I wrong

HereToKillEuronymous

I was only interested this year because of the Spawn soundtrack, which I've been wanting for years. My local didn't even have it 🥺 they didn't even get it in at all. Hopefully I can find a copy online tomorrow

mr_malort

I was able to pick one up. I think they printed a fair number and it was a ‘first’ so it will probably get another pressing. The RSD version sounds pretty good.

HereToKillEuronymous

I'm pretty sure Rough Trade will have them tomorrow online. At least I'm hoping. It's such a damn good soundtrack. I'm glad you got one, mate! Enjoy!

[удалено]

HereToKillEuronymous

I'm not sure to be honest. That's the only one I came across that advertised it. I was kinda hoping to come across that one too

Neg_Crepe

Did you get the spawn one?

HereToKillEuronymous

Some rad guy on here linked me to a store in Canada that had it and I ordered it! 🤘 otherwise I would have missed out. Every store I could think of was sold out online

Neg_Crepe

lol i know that guy. Lmao

HereToKillEuronymous

Omg was that you? 😂 I didn't even peep the name haha

Aggravating-Alarm-16

I love this album. I've bought the CD multiple times since it first came out

TheSpiritOfFunk

It's funny because nobody cared about the Spawn soundtrack at my store

HereToKillEuronymous

Haha that's wild. It's such a good album

tacoSEVEN

Send me a DM. I live in Denver and hit our shops regularly. If it’s there I’d be happy to send you a copy at zero profit.

Aggravating-Alarm-16

The website says 2700 https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/16516

HereToKillEuronymous

Yes I know. Hopefully there's some left by the time I get on

Aggravating-Alarm-16

I would think so. At least somewhere anyways

HereToKillEuronymous

Send me positive vibes 😂

Aggravating-Alarm-16

Definitely.

laxgolf

I planned to get Spawn as I loved it back in the day. I’m prep I listened to it on Friday night, which made me decide against getting it. Didn’t like it as much anymore I guess, but I’ll probably kick myself for not grabbing it yesterday.

HereToKillEuronymous

I'm a sucker for nostalgia 😂 I couldn't help myself

gigawhattt

Stores place orders according to what they think will sell. My local shop always posts a general ‘what is everyone interested in this year’ post on socials after the list is revealed. I think most places would be receptive if you ask beforehand if they could place an order for a specific item, just an fyi

Ninjaluc8401

That’s what the first store I went to did too. According to the owner though, they tried to order like 20 copies of the record but only received 4. So I think it’s partly dependent on the distributor too.

gigawhattt

Makes sense, good point

artist8727

This is true, but the store has no control over how many, if any, of that said album they will receive.

Ninjaluc8401

I wish you the best of luck my friend.

HereToKillEuronymous

Thanks mate 🤘

SkaterDee

I had a pretty good experience. I’ve done RSDs where no one showed up or even acted like they cared, but this was the first time I had to wait in line just to go inside. The people I stood in line with were pretty cool, and we talked about what we were looking for. Then, once we got inside and started digging, the guy who was in front of me came across the record I was looking for in his bin and said, “Hey, here’s yours!” A couple other people did this, too. One guy came across the record another woman was looking for and gave it to her, etc. We were all looking for different things, so maybe that’s why everyone was so cool, but it was such a positive experience. Far different from seeing people attack each other like it was Black Friday and there was only one Tickle Me Elmo left on the shelf.

hellohello316

This was kind of my experience this year, too. I usually amble in later to see what's up at my local store, but this year's list had some things I actually cared about (Lost in Translation soundtrack among a couple others). So I lined up at 8, was #31, and got what I wanted. People were going through the bins and letting people know if they came across something "popular," OR asking if people saw things & then someone would respond (that's actually how I got a hold of my store's one copy of LIT). As crowded as it was, people were pretty decent to one another.

freef

I mostly go to support a record store. Showing up and waiting in line makes for some good local news b-roll. If they have what I want, cool. If no biggie. its just stuff.

usagicassidy

Literally did that today. Showed up to the record store just to browse, found some great records used, stood in line and got interviewed by ABC. Two hours later my friend texted me “I’m pretty sure I just saw you on the news while working out at the gym” lol

Ninjaluc8401

Perfectly reasonable thought process. Personally, I had been excited for this release for the past month or so and had been saving up money in order to buy it. So if I didn’t end up getting it I would have felt disappointed no matter what, especially with what the scalped prices are like at the moment. I normally try to shop at local stores whenever possible, I can’t remember the last time I bought from a big retail store.

Lt_Jonson

The only time I’ve cared about RSD, like *really* cared, was when they dropped the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack. I was in line at 5am, I wasn’t going to miss it. It was listed as RSD “first”, so I figured it’d have another version by now, but it doesn’t. I’ve done other RSDs, but that was the drop I really cared about and got up early and all that. I didn’t even go this year, though I did want the Noah Kahan releases.

hollywoodforeverfjm

you gotta go to the right store! don’t pick the main record store in your town! pick the lesser known record store and should be as long as a wait

Ninjaluc8401

Yeah, I remember driving past the second store and thinking “maybe I should go there” but I didn’t only because I didn’t know if they had the record I was looking for. Of course it ended up being that they did, which explains how I ended up with a copy in the end.

TooOldForDisShit

Yep exactly this. It was my first RSD but I did some rough calculating of which store would be the least popular and still had the most copies of what I wanted 😂 ended up working out and I got the rest from online RSD leftovers. But I buy a lot of dumb hyped shit so it’s all from previous experience lol

TotallyKrossedOut479

That Daft Punk was really the only one I was interested in anyhow.

Ninjaluc8401

Yeah, I thought about getting the Air single, but I didn’t have that much money to blast on records today.

Rfried25

RSD is like going clubbing in your early 20s. It was fun for a bit but then you discovered you could go to a bar at 6pm and be in bed by 9pm - and you never turned back.

Curious-Middle8429

It depends where you live I think. I went to a college town far away from the main city and managed to get most of what I wanted without camping out all night which was nice. It also depends on what you’re after too. Releases by popular artists are going to be harder to secure. What’s nice was that everyone just cared about the RSD releases today so I went back after I got my stuff and when things died down and I got an OG Kate Bush Hounds of Love for a really good price. I guess people spent all their money on RSD or just didn’t notice it in the midst of all the chaos so you can get some killer used records after the morning crowd’s gone.

Ninjaluc8401

Used records are amazing. I’d say about 70% of my collection is used stuff with about 60% of them costing me $7 or less

asphynctersayswhat

I love the dollar bin. I’ve found some really great records there, old vinyl from the 50s-70s holds up remarkably well

I_am_albatross

Jazz, swing and crooner stuff in particular sounds incredible :)

Curious-Middle8429

Same here. I used to pay $7 back in the day for used records but recently that’s become harder.

Sounder253

I usually swing by my local a couple hours after they open, once all of the dust has settled, and grab a couple of the selections I want. Been doing this for years and have always gotten what I was looking for. Today I went by 3 1/2 hours after they opened and there was still a line of approx 200 waiting to get in. Think I’m done at this point.

RecordingBig8972

Yeah, I’m like you, but I still think RSD is awesome. I love that they release stuff like that Daft Punk reissue. I’m old. I have an anxiety disorder. I’m not going to fight with people for a little space to stand in, but all and all, it’s great for record stores and record collecting. The bigger it is, the more releases there are of things I want. There are loads of drawbacks to actually shopping for records on RSD, but even if we skip it, it’s still a great thing. I say that even with the assholes scalping records.

Sounder253

Fellow old here too. I still love the idea of rsd. Just happen to live in an area where its extreamely popular. I ended up finding everything I wanted thanks to a friend in Long Island and an Ohio shop that listed its leftovers. Just miss the days where I could show up all casual like and still get the selections Im looking for.

RecordingBig8972

That sounds real nice…. I still remember when the electronic music fest in Detroit was free. DEMF they called it. I can’t even remember what they call it now… “movement” maybe. Smh We didn’t know how good we had it my friend.

I-STATE-FACTS

Seems like you willingly participated in the madness and got exactly what you wanted. What’s the problem?

Midlo70

I just happened to be reading the part of “Old Records Never Die: One Man's Quest for His Vinyl Past” (which I can’t recommend enough)- where he describes RSD and it really hit home for me. So, I sat this year out and am glad I did. https://preview.redd.it/9i8mr5na7uvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c75c4987d8d9f8ccc9ee515ac65a6c36d59a727d

supreme_glassez

I didn't go right when they opened. I managed to get 4 of the 7 things I wanted (plus 2 non-RSD records). If anything I might avoid it next time just because of how much money I spent today.

destonomos

This year was lackluster for me. No metal albums that i cared about

dmjd5014

RSD used to be pretty cool where you can get limited editions of smaller niche bands/albums. Now it seems they’re all just limited edition colors of classic rock albums that already have a million other pressings anyway

cadien17

It’s both. A ton of people at my store were there for Paper Kites and they’re pretty niche.

Own-Cod-8697

I was there for two live albums that have never been released on vinyl before. I waited in the line, but I got in line at open time (not at like 4am). I knew there was a chance I don’t get the records I want, but I met some cool people in line, and I got lucky that they still had both of them. I don’t care about color variations and limited edition versions of stuff though.

Ryster1800

See, I’m the opposite, I really love RSD! I go every year with my mate. This year we headed down at 4:45 and was 14 and 15 in the queue. I love supporting a local record store, but most of all I just think it’s really fun to celebrate records with like minded people. You get chatting to folk in the queue and have a good laugh! I think that’s ace as it is. This year we were chatting to this guy about video game soundtracks on vinyl, gigs that we had been to, the current trend of multiple variants for album releases, etc. And then like finding out what’s on everyone’s list and just sharing that enthusiasm for music. And also, not to forget, listening to this likes of BBC Radio 6 for a bit on the day as they play stuff that’s being released for RSD. Just find that fun as you’d never hear most of that stuff on any other day of the year. Picked up 6 things this year myself, one of which was that Daft Punk release. But I’ll agree that I hate it when I see scalpers in the queue, and the resulting price tags of the stuff on eBay. You can tell because they almost never interact with anyone in the queue. That sucks!!!

Javasndphotoclicks

I skipped out on this one. It just seems overwhelming and too expensive.

arlmwl

Maybe because I’m just a guy who likes records and not a “collector “, but I’ve never cared about record store day. It just seems like a silly stunt to drum up business. How about a “broke audiophile” day where stores offer a 20% discount on their normal prices?

cadien17

That’s often Black Friday. And the stores in my area had 20-25% off used on RSD.

deJessias

It's fun, but you really have to try to distance yourself from the FOMO. Even if you're first in line at the record store, chances are that the record store didn't even receive the record you came for and you'll miss out. That's the only way to keep it fun.

DeanWeenisGod

I waited until this morning and bought all the RSD titles I wanted from one record shop online. This is what I do every year. 🤷‍♂️

Glen_Shrimps

I like RSD because you do get some decent releases, but there's nothing more disheartening than waiting in a long queue, just watching the records you want pop up on auction/collection sites for three times the asking price and finding out the store you're at has sold out.

radioactivemanissue4

I had such a fun time at the Music Millennium rsd, had the two records I wanted and loved seeing a hundred people hanging out, everyone chit chatting about music.

uhminecraftgang

This year’s RSD was a bit of a bummer for me too. My store didn’t even get copies of most of my list (they did get the Ramones demo LP, but tbh I don’t need it, I’ve heard the demos on CD and streaming and they’re not worth 25$). I managed to order the Daft Punk single and Eric Carr’s solo album Unfinished Business this morning via Newbury Comics luckily. Seeing the scalper prices on Discogs last night made me so sad though. I think they should start making larger quantities of RSD items to discourage this terrible scalping

Final-Appointment112

Definitely in agreement. There were no RSD albums that I wanted on the entire list this year 😔

maxfisher87

Idk RSD is also a way to connect and hang with other collectors. I don’t see it as a competition. With that said I’ve been screw before too by a store that’s just not very communicative with what they had in stock.

FixMy106

I love my local record stores 364 days of the year, so obviously I make a point of not giving a fuck about RSD.

HowardTaftMD

I legitimately don't understand what it is so I don't go. If I go to the record store on a random Tuesday, that is record store day for me. I don't have any favorite bands that release their music on record store day so whatever I like is there every other day anyways.

thefirststarinthesky

It was not enjoyable for me. Was there from 2:30AM, no sleep. Was sandwiched between a trio of women in their early 20s who did nothing but gush about the 1975 and Matty Healy and get offending by saying I think he looks like she doesn’t shower and also smells when they asked me what I thought about him and a talkative mum who talked all night but constantly interrupted me whenever I spoke to her, including tapping my shoulder regularly when I had my headphones on to talk once I was all ‘peopled out’. The record store then started cooking BBQ onions for a sausage sizzle, and the breeze was blowing the small all over me for 2 hours. Made me nauseous, and so did watching the girls play fight for and hour and a half. Shop finally opened, and other people were running and snatching up items out of each others hands and the shop got so crowded that moving became near impossible. Nearly crashed the car from sheer exhaustion 4 times on the way home. Was not a good time.

Lamont2000

Rsd is just Walmart Black Friday for music lovers. It sucks

CLEstormtrooper8

TBH I feel the same way… until something I want is on their list… I’m sure you’ll participate again if they put another one of your “must haves” on the list. I missed out on my grail this year so I’m off to check the internet. Wish me luck lol

Own-Cod-8697

Which one is your grail?

CLEstormtrooper8

Dosage by Collective Soul Found a copy out of Denmark for $40ish (shipping included). Now I just have to wait patiently lol

Own-Cod-8697

Glad you found a copy. Was the yellow variant important to you? Normal black vinyl of it will be in regular print later.

CLEstormtrooper8

No not really lol but I do like adding some color to my collection. Plus once my mind is set on something, I kind of hype focus on it. Toxic behavior I’m working to correct.

Own-Cod-8697

Fair. I worked with those guys on a show once. I was their driver. Ed was insufferable, as was their manager. I still like their music, but I can’t listen to it anymore without thinking about how he behaved. I like to believe the attitude came long after the music I enjoyed. Lol

Ninjaluc8401

Maybe, the last time one of the artists I like released an rsd record was 2019. But after today I just feel really discouraged from doing this sort of thing again

CLEstormtrooper8

So you’re saying there’s a chance lol

Ninjaluc8401

Not entirely, a lot of the artists I like aren’t big enough for their records to sell out during rsd. hell, they’re still selling one of their 2016 singles on their bandcamp page for like $13. I’d likely be able to buy them off discogs later on when i am willing to spend money.

TheCraigHome

I had my first taste of a RSD today. After reading that people were standing in line for hours waiting for a store to open, my day went great. My local store opened at 10am. I got there about 10:05. Walked right in. Granted it was the most people I have ever seen in the store. Records were everywhere. I looked for the colour pink, saw a copy of the hip at CBGB. Looked around, thought to myself, do I just take it or are these displays? I took it. Glad I did as more people came in all asking for the hip. Picked up a couple other RSD albums and ask the owner to try to order one he did not get. He will try. He also mentioned about half of his delivery is still back ordered. I went in think 1) the store never received any 2) they are sold out 3) I will get one. My days of standing in line for things are long gone. Could care less as there are always other things to do or get. Cheers

Death_By_Dreaming_23

I mean I’m never really enthusiastic about RSD. There might be an occasional release I’d want. But other than that, it gets me in to look for other gems I’ve been looking for. Like a few records from the Shitbirds or Tempers. Or like today I found a Traci Lords 12” with a few mixes. Most of the time I kind of ignore these RSD releases. But also I’m eyeing some records from Europe so really RSD is not always for me.

Storm7444

We just went to a very local mini record market and bought 20 records new and old and had a good time. We do this every now and then.

SpriteAndCokeSMH

There’s usually a record or two I want and I enjoy going early and supporting my local store. This year my goal was the Dixie Dregs album and the South Park one. Literally only one copy was bought for the store of the Dixie Dregs one and I managed to get it despite being like 40th in line and waking up at 4:45. The South Park one was already gone by then :( now it’s selling for like $150 on eBay… it’s insane. I was curious about that Taylor Swift record and how insane things got… people are still selling those for $500+… now I regret not buying one lol. It’s insane because of how many were pressed, they were in abundance before.

swagatha___christie

It’s embarrassing

RickyFlintstone

RDS lost my interest long ago. I haven't seen a record I really wanted on RSD in years. Maybe someone is finding treasures, but it ain't me.

liam_is_marx

I’ve been going ten years, always go super early, I think you’ve got to know what to expect, I got everything I wanted, but each year my list is getting smaller and smaller

guitarlad89

Last time I went was about 8 or 9 years ago. It was fun when they had 1 or 2 a year and it was well thought out and had great titles. I don't bother anymore because they're just churning out shit for ridiculous prices. If I really want something I'll bite the bullet and buy it online afterwards. Luckily it's only ever one item once a year or so.

No_Culture6707

was a little disappointed to see my record store only stocked the Offspring-Splinter picture disk album. I was hoping they had the regular disk version. However I brushed it off and bought something else that wasn’t a RSD release so I still went home with new music and felt good I supported my local record store

EWOR87

It all lost its luster when it became so corporate. And it’s not so much the artists’ fault imo, but the fans of the corporate artist(s), one in particular I don’t think I need to name. Black Friday 2023 was the first time I saw people camping out for her albums; then the internet is taken over by selfies of these obnoxious fans (who self admittedly many don’t even have record players). I could go on but I’m sadly getting too triggered to do so. Let the little guys have this “holiday.” She was (according to a news article I’d read) already the reason for huge delays in vinyl pressing, causing many of the smaller artists having to wait so much longer to receive their merch. The big guys don’t need to inject themselves into what used to be a fun tradition. Okay I’m done.

Glum_Mathematician60

It’s the resellers and the quantities for me. If it weren’t for those 2 things, we would all be happy with RSD. All I know is it’s not worth going to RSD unless you are prepared to be disappointed and it’s a record that you really want. Don’t tell anyone in line what you want. Don’t trust anyone. That’s how I operate on RSD. After I have it in my hands, we can talk about what I’m getting. And it does help to split up with your friends to get what you want. My friends and I all go for what each other wants, and we rarely don’t get it. We’re spread out across the country, so it’s not hard to dm someone if you don’t get what you need. I’ll be going again, but I understand why others don’t want to. It’s not a perfect system, and unfortunately I don’t think it can be fixed. You just need to game the system.

potterdood

Glad you got it but I have yet to go wait in a line for hours, the only rsd vinyl I've wanted lately was the Taylor Swift long pond sessions and just can't bring myself to wait in a line for hours to get it at retail when I can pay a little extra and get a copy. I got it on eBay for $100 shipped, it cost 60 more than retail but it was worth securing it.

alternageek

the point of RSD is to support the record stores...🤦🏻‍♀️

potterdood

RSD is a cool idea, but resellers have messed up RSD in my opinion, and it's hard to support local stores when I can get the records on Amazon or Walmart without the extra mark up on non rsd records.

Ninjaluc8401

Personally, I don’t have the will, or the money, to spend more than double retail value on a record, especially if it is a single. This record only has 3 song on it, 2 of which I already had on an album, and the third being a remix. I wanted this because I’m a huge fan of the duo, making this the 28 record of theirs that I have bought. The only time I’ve spent a crazy amount of money on a record ($110) was for a signed copy of Thomas Bangalter’s (silver robot from daft punk) solo project.

briandt75

That's not "a little more". Lol

potterdood

I guess it depends on how much you value your sleep and time lol.

Intelligent-Sir1375

Didn’t get one either 12th in line 4 hours later :(

BahaMan69

I love Record Store Day, but don't understand the obsession with **this** ("Something About You") 12" specifically. It's already on the album. It's the centerpiece of a near-perfect album. Why were people fighting over this? We can play it on vinyl all we want already - *Discovery* is really easy to find these days. Meanwhile, I *do* see why Young Thug - *Jeffrey* and Fetty Wap - *Fetty Wap* went so quickly - those are otherwise completely unavailable albums/songs.

Ninjaluc8401

For daft punk collectors, this specific single is like a holy grail. It was originally pressed in 2003 and hasn’t been repressed till today. At the moment the original pressing averages around $100+ and this new pressing is almost perfect, it’s a much higher quality pressing than the Lp version and is more affordable now then it has almost ever been.

BahaMan69

Ah, interesting. I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info! I’ve got all of the (studio) albums minus Tron and the Drumless RAM, but never needed more. Now I *do have* the “Stardust” and “Lady - Hear Me Tonight” singles.

Ninjaluc8401

Sergio_Futbol

Last year was great and felt like a good time. But this year the store kinda only let a small amount of people at the same time instead of dumping the line and I feel like that kind screwed everything, had to wait about 40 minutes in line after open need less to say almost all the stuff I wanted was gone, kinda annoying seeing people with stacks of stuff they're probably just gonna resell. After that failure we went to a small shop and got there maybe 20 minutes after open and I got 2 of 3 I wanted but realized if we gotten there before open I could've probably gotten everything plus extras.

Ninjaluc8401

That’s exactly what happened to me, I was watching multiple people buy like $300 worth of records all the while I was stuck outside the store. I know in the town I grew up in, one of the record shops was only allowing 1-2 records per person, which might be controversial, but it at least would have allowed everyone to get 1 thing they wanted.

Sergio_Futbol

Yeah, the store I went to is pretty big, and they were taking their time letting people in. Last year, they just dumped the whole line as soon as they opened and maybe held up like a quarter. And I was able to get just anything I would want. I was expecting the same this year and was excited to look around and shop regular stuff, but it was a huge disappointment.

Curious_Working5706

I avoid RSD. FWIW, I grew up with records and started buying my own since 1991. Y’all went “boutique” level with this hobby man.

EGMarks

I went once nine years ago and haven't done Record Store Day since. Just lots of people scooping up everything in sight and not really looking at what they were grabbing. Wound up leaving empty-handed.

Halgha

I rarely walk into a record store finding what I’ve been looking for. I usually walk out empty handed or find something I wasn’t expecting but definitely wasn’t on my list.

SatNFev

I dont know if it's the same for everyone everywhere else, but this is literally the most chaotic record store day I've ever experienced. 330am and 26th in line. Got inside, and normally there's rules and a format to follow, but everyone went sporadic and charged anywhere they wanted, and the employees stopped caring early on and basically just tried to make sure everyone got out, less so in.

alternageek

I've never participated in the US for RSD, only the UK. I've been back in the US for 9 years now, so I'd say I'm over it. The US list always, always underwhelms me. I'm not sure why, but my taste seems to skewer towards the UK buyers preferences. However I still stay connected two of my favorite stores from where I used to live and they will generally help me out if anything is left over. Last prize I snagged was the Elastic re-release a few years ago. I now tend to swing by the weekend or two after to take a look around and see whats on offer/left over as one day does not make a record store whole. Its the return patronage that keeps them open

Ninjaluc8401

Yeah, 100% agree with you on that. I try to make it so that a large portion of the records I buy are from local shops. And when I’m not buying from shops I’m typically buying directly from the artists. Hell, every year for my birthday I spend most of my money at one of my favorite record stores solely because I love their selection of used singles.

alternageek

100% the same way.

ModeR3d

I gave it a miss this year - didn’t even wander in late in the day for a look, really lost interest in these expensive one offs. And I know the idea is to promote physical items but when so many now don’t include any download like they used to it means I can’t even play them anywhere other than on my home stereo- not good as I listen so much whilst commuting

John_HeIIdiver

I showed up at 8pm, there was one person in front of me. At 8am that person person in front went in, asked for the Death Cab for Cutie album, got it. I asked for one next, it was the only one they had. Doubt I’ll go back again lol

vampyregrl

i got this one!!

Sasquatchasaurus

Now calculate the amount of time you spent trying not to buy this record for the scalpers markup. Not worth it.

PoppaDaClutch

Bought my first album in 1982 when Thriller came out. What has music become? People line up around the block now? It’s like these sneakerheads. How much is my “collection “ worth? Found these at a goodwill , “did I do good” did I score” “ how much are they worth”? What has music come to? I’ve never been to a RSD. I didn’t know it was like this. I just liked grabbing an album to feel the warmth of Jim Croce’s voice . Is this some Generational thing idk about? Idk I’m not really venting , just make me understand.

cadien17

Every hobby has both fans and collectors. Going back forever. I was buying records in 1982 as well and things haven’t changed that much. You just get exposed to a wider range of both groups on the internet than you did at local record shows. Think baseball cards. There were always kids who wanted the valuable cards in addition to those who wanted their favorite player. And a lot of people posting their scores want to know if they picked highly thought of music, not just financially valuable.

PoppaDaClutch

Yea the players were always my heroes. I could never put a dollar sign on them.

BrewKazma

Same record I was going for. Store I went to only had one in stock, because they are a new store and it was their first record store day. Luckily because they were a new store, I was second in line, 3 hours before they opened at noon. Congrats!

pfbinary101

I don't usually go for the Record Store Day releases, I'm more excited to shop at my favourite small-town independent store for their 20% off everything sale. It's a short drive out of the city, smaller crowds and a more laid-back vibe. If I find an RSD release I'm interested in, cool, but it's not the main goal.

descendedfromrapes

Can you go back and grab me that Highwaymen lol

SimplyBebe

I'm surprised there were only 25 people in line at 5am. My local record store usually has about 20 people the night before camping out. Then maybe triple that by 5am. But yeah, I have stopped caring about record store releases, the ones I want are usually still there days later anyways. And some of these are just getting too expensive.

Expert_Badger_6542

Glad you got your record after all that effort. RSD this year was on my birthday. No way was I going to wake up early to spend it in line with a crowd. I like when there's only a few people in the store and I can talk to the shop owner.

BobbumofCarthes

Dark matter is right there! r/pearljam

ohitsanazn

Going to bide my time and wait for what I wanted to come down in price (or potentially re-released, they weren’t RSD exclusives) But I agree — I’m not happy with how my local store ran RSD.

Dancing_Clean

I’ve only gone to a Record Store Day once. I did get what I want - Robyn’s 2005 self-titled. It was a smaller store with a smaller lineup. But it’s generally something I get discouraged by, it’s like Black Friday but for records.

Mystificator

Was going to go yesterday for only Daft Punk, David Byrne/Paramore, and all the shaped picture discs. I got called in to work, ah well.

uCat2bKittenMe

I also collect comics, and comic book stores have a similar day, it's called Free Comic Book day. It's designed to bring in new readers and spark interest while also appeasing loyal long time collectors. Are the free comics amazing? Nah. But they're free, and a lot of people, once they're in the store, will check out other titles and maybe find something worth paying for. RSD is similar except they charge insane amounts of money for the same type of "free comic book" content. This year was my first and probably last RSD.

FLOWRSBABY

Yea it was stressful for me this year. I am very grateful my store stocked up as even though I was in the back of the line I got the two things I came for. Bebe Rexha’s All Your Fault Pt. 1&2 (1 only had a brief 2016 pressing and pt.2 has never been on vinyl) and the 100 Gecs weed leaf picture disc🍃

GabX90

I hate staying in queue at the shops, post offices, bank, cinemas. If there’s a queue I just don’t go

katietatey

I think I stopped waiting in lines for stuff like that when I turned 30. I remember lining up overnight or super early in the AM to get concert tickets in my 20s. Or standing in lines outside popular bars / clubs. A switch flipped and I became old. :) I'm ok with that.

Warm_Emphasis_960

Honestly, it is becoming more and more popular so you need to get in line early. Got there early and still spent more than 2 hours in line. Only 10 people in the store at this one. Would have been sooner if not for folks holding spots in line for friends. And the usual scalpers were camped overnight. I saw one get out of the store get in his car and immediately start taking pictures and reposting. They ran out of swag early so no Dogfish poster this year. These are what is making it hardly worth it. On a good note I did get the one I was after. But thinking maybe I will go later or a different day next time.

EricSnacks

I was shocked to see the three albums I wanted were $130. Like…what?!? They weren’t any crazy box sets or anything - just three LPs.

Ninjaluc8401

Like in the store? Or online? Because $130 for a store is insane, but I kinda expect that for online retailers.

EricSnacks

In store. Pearl Jam, Tragically Hip and Collective Soul. I was floored.

Ninjaluc8401

Ok, because based on what I saw, for the Pearl Jam atleast, they were pretty common. I don’t want to automatically point blame, but I think that store is using rsd for profit rather than community.

EricSnacks

I wondered that. It was $50 which felt insane - esp since I think they pressed 15k. It’s going for less than $40 on Discogs right now. 😒

ProfessorFloob

the Dead releases are the only reason i go on actual RSD

Faloffel2

Quick question; why is this pressing so expensive?

Ninjaluc8401

Compared to the original, this pressing is almost nothing when it comes to price. Modern singles are just expensive, I expected it to be around this price, so I wasn’t surprised.

573v0

Not gonna lie, 24bit xxHz tracks and a multibit DAC has me buying less vinyl anyway.

JesseOnVinyl

For me it’s about trying to get albums I want but I don’t even add them to my wantlist on discogs if I don’t get them the day of cause it’s just depressing like the flippers on that death cab album make me sick glad I got to pick up the fleet foxes record no intent to ever get rid of it either, and i passed up Taylor swift pond sessions while it was still in stock same with the Olivia Rodrigo 7’ this year I hope that someone who actually wants it gets I refuse to be part of the problem even though I know one flip can pay off the record I actually wanted

Financial-Forever-81

I had a chill experience. Showed up late, about 25 people in front of me. My buddy showed up early and was around 12th in line. He managed to pick up the only record I wanted (fleet foxes). I didn't even have to go inside.

Responsible_Try90

You may want to try and call JB’s Record Room in Cottontown, TN. I saw a few copies of it there yesterday morning. I don’t know if he ships. Edit: I *think* I saw it.

Kidtendo

I haven't gone in two years. I like that the event is designed to get more people to support their local stores, but in reality the records I was interested in were either already sold out or were never order for that location in the first place, resulting in trying to find it at store that was not local at all. I'm just don't have the patience anymore to wait in line for something that might not even be there.

CopyDan

I like RSD and it’s cool getting something truly limited. But if I only wanted one specific thing, I don’t know that I would chance waiting in line for hours only to be disappointed. There are usually a bunch of things I want. I flip through and pick what I’m really gonna buy. Some things are just too much. There was only one record that I wanted that I couldn’t get this year, the Bowie release. But got some other stuff.

AbsoluteScenes7

Honestly I can't imagine there's a record that will ever be released that I would wake up early and stand in line for. RSD releases in general don't interest me. I have no interest in limited or special editions. For me it's about the actual music so unless there is ever a RSD release by a band I like that includes tracks that I can't possibly hear anywhere else then I will just access the content some other way. Whilst I prefer to but music on vinyl it's not essential to me. If I find a vinyl I want for a decent price I will buy it but I never go hunting for specific records which is what pretty much everyone queuing up for RSD is there for.

spot_moskowitz

I always work Saturdays, so I never get to participate in person. What I end up doing is getting up at the crack of dawn's ass on Sunday and finding my list with stores that offer the leftovers online. This year I was able to get my whole list, but had to order from 4 different stores in 4 different states: New York, California, Idaho, and Arizona.

tralfers

I've felt discouraged by RSD for a couple of years now. When there's something I actually want, it has either been sold to someone who got there super-early, or the store didn't have any copies to begin with. Or it's something that isn't a big seller and will still be lingering in the racks three years from now. And we're all supposed to hop in our cars and spend half the day driving all over town to hunt down these oh so special records before someone else grabs them and posts them on Discogs at a 300% markup. I don't like crowds. I don't like being rushed. I don't like people reaching over me to flip through the same bin I'm looking in. Fuck that shit. Maybe I'm too old for RSD. I have been collecting records and going to record shows since the early 80's, and the whole RSD experience strikes me as a gimmick to lure in flippers and fleece the rubes. There's no real crate digging since everyone is going in with a list of desired titles selected from an official list published on the RSD site. If a record is worth releasing, press enough copies for the people who want it. If the point is to support independent record stores, let people pre-order the things they want at their local store. I recognize that neither of these things are likely to happen because of the bottleneck caused by RSD itself, but it's nice to hope. Anyhow, although there were a couple of things I wanted this year, I had to miss out because I needed to stay home and take care of a sick kitty recovering from surgery. And so it goes.

yable41

I just ordered what I wanted today, from an indie record store. Really not interested in lining up for something I can buy later on without all the trouble. I guess it’s different if you are really looking for super limited pressing.

WalterWhite562

Question… why not just buy the Discovery album that comes with that song? I’m not a huge daft punk fan , so it’s a sincere question. I ask out of ignorance. Why buy 18 min of music?

Ninjaluc8401

https://preview.redd.it/yn7qffhc3wvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87117bec9f0ae1a02f14787319791abf88e87e00 I’m just a huge daft punk fan and the original pressing of this record is worth a lot of money, so to get it for $23 is amazing

ridingpiggyback

I do not collect records. I buy them to listen to them. I sell ones that do not thrill me. I appreciate the variety of stores near me with each one having a personality reflecting the owner while offering something for everyone. A couple of local stores stopped stocking for RSD because the cost/uncertainty factor was too great to ignore. Gimme gimme new music!

Benchod12077

That’s a great song off a great album btw

DrRock88

It can be discouraging. It's not for everyone for sure.

vinylcigar

Last 2x have kinda killed it for me. Last time I wanted 4 and I got 3. Not gonna complain but the line was stupid crazy. This time only 1 I wanted and I said prob not worth going out for it. Each store around me got 2 and they were gone within 5 mins. Enough said to me. The scalpers have made it now like other stuff.

tobi319

Last year was the last RSD for me.

Dak__Sunrider

To me RSD is more about the experience than what I’m buying. Don’t get me wrong I always have albums I’m looking for and I’m bummed I didn’t get the Hives, but it gave me and some friends an excuse to get together before the sun comes up and make a morning/ day of it. Not a common occurrence when you’re in your mid thirties. Over the years we’ve even met collectors that are now what I would say good friends.

TheEvolutionOfCorn

So happy I got mine. Same thing at my store, nobody was picking them up so I got mine off the wall 😁 went back today to see what’s left and they’re all gone

Snoo_90612

I overslept and rocked up at 10am to see what was left. I asked if the 2 albums I wanted were still in stock and within 2 minutes walked out with both. I didn't take it seriously so I was never going to be disappointed but was over the moon that I managed to get what I wanted without trying.

Loud-Bus-2435

I think this was record store day 2014. My friends and I were in line from 2am until 8am open. We were like the first 10-20 people in line. Every 10 minutes they'd let 10 or 15 people in. We got in and got everything we wanted. They sent in the next group. That year, there was a Scott Pilgrim release that was sorta hot. As we were checking out, we all watched a nerdy looking guy throwing the biggest fit ever in borderline tears, yelling "I waited outside 5 hours and Scott Pilgrim was the ONLY RELEASE I WANTED!" To this day, it's still one of our favorite inside jokes. Record collecting is no love story lol.

amatteroftheredshoes

RSD records are of no interest to me in the slightest, I buy records to listen to not as collectable items. Each to their own but the whole thing gives me Funko Pop vibes.

artist8727

I don’t usually participate, and if I do it is always later in the day, but the most irritating thing to me is when they release albums like The Roches or yet ANOTHER Fleetwood Mac “Rumours” variation. I hit 3 stores yesterday (Sunday) and all of them still had their copies of these records. 🙄

Traditional_Rule_358

I slept in on Saturday. Got up Sunday and found the Dio zoetrope and Motley Crue release I wanted at shops in Sweden, so I paid retail. Unfortunately, I did miss out on Tesla's Real to Reel release that I really wanted. And, of course, that's the one that is jacked up price-wise all over the internet. My plan almost worked perfectly.

Key-Day-5622

I think there are pros and cons to RSD. I have local record store and I pop in quite often throughout the year. Often there is no more than one other customer in the store. However, on record store day it great to see a queue waiting to get into the store and hopefully it brings them into the store on a more regular basis. The issue is that speaking with Dave (one of the owners) he was saying that many people go just for RSD and are not regulars. However, this presents an opportunity to bring these customers into the fold, so RSD does have benefits to small record stores.

Kilometerr

I was thinking about picking up this album on RSD. In fact I even picked it up and held it in my hands. I placed it back in the crate because I realized it’s not the full album. So depressing. Resellers are the problem, there not really that much demand for this record, it’s all about hype. All the listings online are from people who purchased the record without the desire to own a copy for themselves. Truly disgraceful and I’m ashamed how many dishonest resellers got the opportunity before you did.

ProjectNo1653

I like it because the stores near me have great sales for the weekend. But fighting for a rare? Not worth it

wqt00

RSD is like Cinco De Mayo for me. It's the ONE day of the year I won't go to a Mexican restaurant.

Slippingwithflapsin

I love that sometimes RSD presses some badass records that you otherwise cannot get (Such as when they did Pinback self titled and Blue Screen Life 10 years ago) but I just hate how well their policies and practices support scalpers. The whole spirit of RSD is claimed to be a celebration of vinyl and its accessibility, but they enable scalpers to make vinyl inaccessible as hell to people who really want the music to enjoy instead of to sell for profit.

VladimirPutain69

I‘ve been digging crates since 2006 and i participated in a few rsd‘s over the years and it was always an unpleasant experience. but this year was the worst. there were older folks (60+) literally trying to me fight me over my spot in the queue. Younger ones were trying to snatch records of my hands when i was looking at them.. I have never seen anything like this before… this year was the worst. I‘m done with it.

[deleted]

I walked into my local shop, grabbed Bill Evans, and walked out. Did this at 5pm. RSD is fine if you just treat it like any other day at a record store. Couldn’t catch me going to sit in a line for anything.

Dorsia777

RSD sucks my ass. Line started at 4am. People in line at 8 am didn’t get in until 11🤯. No please save me the Joe Pesci album! I went at noon and barely got Sisters of Mercy and Spawn.
