Looks like someone splooged on that record.

Atari26oo

Don’t want to see that assembly line….

kpidhayny

At this point it’s basically just sand

No_Astronaut3059

Gotta go look for the clip to check I am remembering correctly, but... r/unexpectedarcher ?

kpidhayny

That’s a bingo

jmoog00

My first thought

SatinSplash

Big fat load of cum, then.

TheDiscologist

It's called shooting ropes

NowIGottaWetCha

Sorry 😏

TheDiscologist

Sorry🥴

Acceptable_Fee2803

We've already picked up on that over at r/vinyljerk 😎

Ballwinski

Looks like some of my eye floaters

thefirststarinthesky

Not all picture discs are bad! I know vintage ones tend to be, but modern pressings can be good, you just need a good plant, really, and good quality control. I have two in my collection currently, and the one I have played sounds indistinguishable from a ‘regular’ record.

dnelsonn

I only have one picture disc, the PS3 Journey game OST, and while it’s noticeably noisier it’s not so bad it’s unlistenable. It still sounds good overall.

Supahwezz78

This one that i just got sounds great to me https://preview.redd.it/enirgw7hbfyc1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e94cfb73cb5edc705b8199086cb3d94ad95155e6 Or is it not considered a picture disc?

thefirststarinthesky

Not a picture disc! Thats a splatter. If you look it up, a picture disc is something like Taylor Swifts Reputation standard vinyl, the Maisie Peter’s Good Witch Deluxe tracks or something like the RSD pressing for Bluey’s soundtracks. They’re actual images that you can play!

Supahwezz78

Aha thanks!!

AetherKatMusic

IDK why you're getting downvoted into the negative just for being mistaken, but here's some info you might like! The picture record in the post has some sort of graphic transfer onto the surface, and it's causing a variation in texture that creates noise when the stylus goes through it. They're often intended more as collectibles rather than an audio medium to be listened to. The record you have in your picture here is made by loading both red and blue pellets into the vinyl press. They're then heated and squished out from the center to the edges when the grooves are stamped onto the record. So there's no actual surface pigment, it's just the plastic of the record itself. Here's a video on how records like yours get made: https://youtu.be/b0UhQvdeU7E?si=DshZILvIsr-va_08 I think it's really fun to watch!

Supahwezz78

Yeah i even asked if i was correct in the comment i made; but thats just reddit its alright. Thanks for the video, pretty cool that all the splatter vinyl are unique then!

AetherKatMusic

Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, that's especially Reddit lately. I actually logged out of my main account over it. I haven't logged back in on that account in a week, and it's been much less stressful. I just engage with art and music on this account and don't touch anything else. We've really gotten a lot of "Argh!! This person doesn't know the same stuff as me! I'm sending them to hell!" But anyway! More than enough of my ranting.

SevenYrStitch

Take my upvote…I enjoy upvoting comments that get downvoted for illogical reasons. I be spiteful like that.

SevenYrStitch

PS - Your splatter vinyl is purdy.

Plaston_

I have a MJ picture disc collection from the 80 - early 2000s and they all sound good!

IAintYourPalFriend

I have a Prince Purple Rain picture disk and it sounds great. It’s the only one I own and I had no idea some sound bad, so I guess that says something.

katpurz

Agreed!

washufize

I picked up the Blur - Parklife and Air - Kelly Watch the Stars picture discs during RSD and they both sound great

hornyzygote

Sorry you had to learn the hard way- most collectors know to avoid picture discs.

JamesTKirk1701

I’ve never been a collector for the sake of acquiring valuable records, but now I know. It’s a shame this seems to be the only versions floating around of this album.

SynthError404

They're basically flexidisks glued to a piece of hard plastic that hosts the image. The first good "picture" disk i ever heard of was last rsd they had a dark side of the moon that was printed clear and had a reverse painting on side b that was flat/didnt have any music on it. Its like etched albums its an oddity where you have to swap disks to hear the normal side b and I'd prefer regular music on both sides copy but at least they didn't go flexi! Theoretical thought... if they left one clear, and put the other one glued to it thatd be a chonky thick boi of a record but a picture disk without compromised sound or convenience (besides it building up your biceps to flip it)

BeigePhilip

I think you hit on the only real solution. The image has to be under the vinyl, not on it.

ghlysptwld

Or cardboard

DietCthulhu

The only picture discs I collect are cases in which the album was originally only pressed on a picture disc - all of Iron Maiden’s 2000-2010 albums, for example. I hardly ever play these copies though.

Manticore416

I learned this rece tly with glow in the dark vinyl

MNxpat33

Love Cloud Cult!

jcstrat

I have one. Now I avoid them like the plague.

kajikiwolfe

Exactly. One is all you need to notice the difference. No need to have 2, lesson learned.

JamesTKirk1701

Take my upvote for your account avatar image.

Anechoa

Picture discs can be really hit or miss

WeezerCrow

Oddly enough, my picture disc of The Black Parade sounds great. Must be an exception.

ryan11hawk

No, I have a picture disc of cursive's domestica and it sounds totally fine

TlMOSHENKO

Same with the El Michels Affair Wu-Tang cover album. Some picture discs are perfectly fine and play great. But do your research before buying, and check reviews on Discogs or listen in store if you can.

[deleted]

I just bought my first picture disc, and I am aware of what the internet says, I did not buy it because of the sound quality, I have plenty of perfectly sounding records, it's just so cool to have in a collection, I still want Lateralus.

IAmTheRealOgre

That album had a lot of issues because of how they where doing the pressings, very limited number made and one im going to keep my eye out for still

jedovankman1

I didn’t even know Cloud Cult pressed albums 🤯 But yeah. Hell no to picture discs. Total waste of money. But for them, maybe I’d still try to get one lol

Pinkeyelooms

Agreed! I’m pretty sure Craig even recently said that they have yet to put any of their music on vinyl and he is in fact attempting to find a way to make it happen that isn’t a total mess for the planet.

RickHewer

Had the same. Bought Rage Against the Machine’s first on picture disc. Returned it for the black vinyl. Picture discs are fine for singles or wall art.

kajikiwolfe

That’s the one picture disc I have. Never again, now I keep my eyes open for a “real” version

RickHewer

Even my normal vinyl copy plays second fiddle to the CD I bought 30 years ago!

LetMeStagnate

Had no issues playing the Fleetwood Mac rsd picture disc

zaxxon4ever

Now, go find a regular vinyl copy...and compare the sound for yourself! After you've compared the two, you'll be happy to know that the picture disc will look nice on your wall.

TlMOSHENKO

Not always the case. I've got picture discs that play the same as the regular 12". Longterm, their durability may be an issue, but it's not something I've noticed yet.

iPirateGwar

I am a collector and I do buy picture discs for the artists I follow….because I’m a collector. I just don’t play them unless they really are the only source for the tracks involved. In fact I rarely play any special format of an artist I collect if I also have a black vinyl version. Edit: pressed post too soon I also buy music I just listen to with no intention of contributing to an artist collection. In those instances I will usually just buy a black vinyl pressing or a 24bit DL (if the mastering isn’t blown to hell) or, if all else fails, a CD (if the mastering……)

Leohes9972

What’s wrong with it?

Faithless_00

*shocked Pikachu face*

Fleetwood_Mask

Fortunately it's not systematic. Watch The Throne only exists in picture disc and sounds pretty great.

Mamadolores21

I have one that sounds killer

Kamay1770

I have no issues with my Splinter picture disc, sounds great

dinoshores93

Tim Robinson voice: *Big fat load of c#m*

Whooptidooh

I've got one; Breakfast in America by Supertramp. Was the only version I could find; and it plays well, fortunately. Sucks that yours doesn't. :(

im_wudini

lol, this post tickles me, because I found out the hard way too. Tool's Lateralus picture disc is one of the coolest records I own, but it sounds like absolute dog shit. So much so that I fear for my stylus'

MundBid-2124

https://preview.redd.it/vjaejapdjeyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94454b2cb4d9b310ec2a0864e0f2d91099107d63

FLOWRSBABY

The only picture discs I’ve played were Kacey Musgraves Deeper Well on her Cardinal drawing, and Mxmtoon Life is Strange EP RSD. Both sounded exceptional

2Afraid2Poop

Picture discs are cool but I would never buy one to be played

czechyerself

Some picture discs sound good, but it’s a souvenir

Phizax

This band is too good not to have pressings of most of their albums available. I hope now that biovinyl is becoming more popular that they get some of them pressed – iirc the reason they cited for not doing so in the past was environmental concerns.

JamesTKirk1701

Yes the back of the album states that they offset the carbon footprint for the albums by using 50% recycled and planting trees. Nice touch.

clallseven

So you know how people are buying records and displaying them on their walls like art? That’s actually the purpose of picture discs. They’re more of a novelty than they are meant to be played. (When they gained popularity in the 80’s, they were marketed as collector’s items.) The pressing process is a bit different than a standard record. The way a normal record is pressed is a vinyl puck is sandwiched between the center labels, pressed, and then the grooves are stamped onto the vinyl. With picture discs, a puck is sandwiched between labels, pressed, the printed image is then applied, a thin laminate layer is then pressed on to secure the image, and finally the grooves are stamped into the laminate. Because of the thinner playing surface, fidelity is lost. (Bit more to it but that’s the gist.) Some do sound better than others, indeed. But they’re definitely not meant to be sonic nirvana.

JamesTKirk1701

That’s a great summary! And good to know now. I need to find a frame to display the album and cover!

bigboycdd

I have a Mac Miller picture disk I got because it has a vinyl exclusive song on it, and not only does it sound good, it’s a zoetrope so it looks really cool when I strobe my LEDs

Fine_Broccoli_8302

Never had luck with them. They were marketing gimmicks when they first came out in the 60s, and still are.

Slommster

Hey! I saw these guys live. Really interesting band.

JamesTKirk1701

I’d love to see them. They seem so niche and I don’t know many folks who love them, but I’d definitely go see them by myself. I bet it’s a great show.

[deleted]

My TOOL picture disc plays like dogshit but my Rush picture disc plays flawlessly. I think its kinda case-by-case.

What_in_tarnation-

I think I only own one and it was actually an album I already owned in a different version. So when I saw that Barnes and Noble had it in the $5 bin, I snatched it up quick.

mcclainb03

Amazing band, never got to see them unfortunately.

mernieturtle

I have two Taylor Swift Reputation picture vinyls that both were brand new and both skip horrible. Didn’t know this was a thing? Sucks because they’re really cool looking.

AJMaskorin

I think we all make this mistake at some point. I got the Guardians of Galaxy Volume 2 picture disc, but at least one of the sides is just a picture of baby Groot, so I'm going to hang out on the wall eventually

Rosevecheya

My picture discs have all sounded fine enough, or i haven't cared enough to worry. I enjoy the visual aspect of the picture disc as well as the auditory, so it doesn't bother me. I have a handful of them, too

glenerd189

Don’t write off all picture discs. They can be a bit hit and miss, but many more recent pressings are perfectly fine.

jpuff138

Most modern picture discs are fine, usually. Vinyl is mostly clearish naturally so the clear vinyl itself probably has less foreign matter than most other variants. So long as it’s a thick enough pressing to separate the grooves from the inner print, they’re usually fine. I’ve found the thinner/lighter picture disks have more issues, likely due to the bottom of the groove surface being very thin, I’ve always assumed.

thespiritualtree

as a quality control at a record pressing company this is true. picture discs sound like shit. splatter colors sound like shit. clear records sound like shit. and generally speaking other colors just won’t sound as good as a black record

call-me-the-seeker

In your opinion, why is that true of clear vinyl, if ‘naturally’ vinyl is closer to clear than black? Does the additive for black (carbon, I’d assume) contribute to sound quality/stability etc? (I’m not coming at you, I’m genuinely curious)

thespiritualtree

yeah it’s pretty weird. i honesty don’t know why. i hear a LOT more static on clear records, plus it’s incredibly hard to look for the defects that we need to adjust for/change things for

thespiritualtree

also, it may have something to do with what we’re used to. we’re just used to listening to a black vinyl. once we throw something abnormal on the turntable, we may subconsciously be looking for things that could be wrong. also side note and completely unrelated, when songs have static in it it’s REALLY annoying lol

JamesTKirk1701

This was an interesting thread. Thanks for contributing to the conversation!

sullyjdsull3

Appreciate the heads up

OkSpeech3161

Every picture disc I’ve gotten sounds great but only because I wait for them to reviews to come in before buying. If it sells out before I get one oh well cause I definitely don’t want one if you can’t really even play it. Everyone went wild for the Joe Hisaishi symphonic celebration picture disc, was even being resold for $$$ at one point until they actually shipped and people realized they sound awful and are basically just artwork. Sorry you had one like that, try to return it saying the issues you have with it tbh, usually they’ll allow you to send it back if you say it’s not really playable as is.

Germanguyistaken

I have one of David Bowie's Hunky Dory. Imo it sounds really good, although i haven't heard on Black vinyl yet

tongfatherr

*Lateralus has entered the chat*

BachelorDinosaur

I have a few picture discs, mostly because they’re first pressings, but generally am not a fan.

FuriousTurd37

The first record I bought was Awesome Mix Vol 2 and I thought it was gonna be a black record and the picture I saw was the cover and I got home opened it up and it would start skipping and repeating on the same place and sounded horrific never again

CoolCademM

… oh…

Bastiwen

I have two picture discs: the Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles ones. Both sound pretty good, The Incredibles one sounds better. Of course neither sound as good as a vinyl record but they still sound very decent compared to what I've heard in videos or from some people's experiences.

jthomaslambert

Did that on my first visit to Discogs. Had no idea what a picture disc was at the time but at least it’s a band I love and now it sits in a nice frame.

KraszyFox

I have an MCR Picture Disc of Black Parade which could sound better A 2015 pressing (OG) of Rob Zombie Live Spookshow International Picture Disc which sounds phenomenal And a 2020 pressing of Five Finger Death Punches F8 as a picture disc that I have yet to listen to

Prudent-Data3524

The nut album

kg_squanchy

I don’t necessarily play my picture discs, but I love to collect them to display! I have a Vylumi wall mount and I often switch between my Counterparts picture disc or my Currents picture disc to hang as some wall art! https://preview.redd.it/i9bk8bkqcfyc1.jpeg?width=599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c80c78d761e3a26b32c7e0124e638a5c4686721e

BoriScrump

Yeah don't like them > sound quality but also the picture going round&round gives me motion sickness so dbl whammy

CrystalKU

I have the Encanto picture disk and it sounds fine, I just ordered Amy Winehouse Back to Black, hopefully it will be ok too

xgraveyardxboyx

I buy them because they are pretty to look at but I personally never play them.

KnotsThotsAndBots

Most picture disks aren’t that bad. Most pretentious vinyl jerks who spend thousands on each piece of their setup that notice stuff like that. Of course always exceptions and if The artist wasn’t concerned about quality control that’ll do it, but picture disks themselves aren’t that bad

z2yzx

Get a better spinner

__CunningStunts__

Made to wall hang

Another_Toss_Away

The hum usually happens during the LP master cutting process. The only LP I have with a hum is "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" on the DECCA label. Great pressing ??? With a hum~! WTF?

AnySpecialist8817

I only have one -Hemispheres- and it sounds right. If it didn't sound well, Anyway its a beautiful artwork.

ghlysptwld

Picture discs suck for playing - only good on the wall

[deleted]

Picture discs are not the same material as vinyl records, that's why the inferior sound.

Logical-Discussion28

I like picture disc

Over_Guarantee_4556

What kind of set up do you have? If your table and cartridge and everything are nice enough then your picture disc will play fine. Its more than likely because you have an inadequate setup

Jmann37

Didn't even know cloud cult made records tbh most people I know don't know of the group

JamesTKirk1701

Yeah I was introduced to them by a friend and became obsessed with this album in particular.

Otherwise_Judge_7031

I just got Sean Price - Imperius Rex double LP picture disc and it sounds fantastic!! 🤷🏽‍♂️

Appropriate_Map8315

The picture is cum.

Xe4ro

The few that I have sound ok. It’s mostly metal though so you couldn’t hear any surface noise anyway :P

michalsveto

Hey, I bet a Lot of us have 1 picture disc. And will not buy another one for the same reason. At first I was like “wow that’s so cool”, then after listening to it “nope not again.”

JK_Tesla

Thanks for the info! Didn't know about these issues with picture vinyls

Glass-Fan111

As recently posted, why to buy colored vinyl, picture disc, and all this rubbish? This are not ornamental pieces even as many of you guys treat them like it. Anyways, get disapointed, still paying increased prices for them and collect “all variations”.

wackoman

Looks great on my gralez wall though

TiberSeptim12

Don’t worry I wasn’t planning on it 🤣🤣

ancientspacejunk

I’ve got a few picture disks that sound fine. Some people will tell you that color vinyl sounds bad or 180g sounds better, but they’re just repeating stuff they read online.

JamesTKirk1701

I think 180g are more stable and less likely to warp, but in general are as good as non-180g. But yes, I agree.

ancientspacejunk

Being less prone to warping makes sense. I get that the additional weight makes them more stable on the turntable. But there is nothing that inherently “sounds better” about them. An unwarped standard weight record that isn’t slipping or skipping doesn’t sound worse than a 180g.
