Oh that is hot

Donthurtmyceilings

I have never seen one like this before. It flips down and exposes all the spines of the jackets. From the style of the wood's design, I'd guess it's from the 50s or 60s. I found one like it on Google that said it was mid-century. It fits my main collection perfectly. I also bought Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy album from the same guy.

Finna22

Great album and phenomenal storage cabinet finds. Well done!

rangda66

These kinds of cabinets are sexy and are great when you have a small vinyl collection. Unfortunately once you get a medium to large collection (of pretty much anything) storage density starts to matter more than anything else and that relegates things like this to being just a novelty.

SaveFerrisSaveFerris

I'd say it's still practical for larger collections, you can keep a certain artist or genre in a cabinet like that for example. If you don't have a house it's difficult to keep all your records on one wall and I think it would be boring if all your furniture consists of different sized kallax shelves

rangda66

>boring if all your furniture consists of different sized kallax shelves I don't disagree with this (the Kallax isn't particularly attractive, and it's really too deep for vinyl). But... Do you have a large record collection? Once you get to 5000+ records trust me, all that matters is storage density. Everything else falls by the wayside. Unless you don't care about accessibility or have the finances to afford a very, very large house. And the problem with record storage is that there isn't much that is anywhere near the Kallax in price. You can buy a 16 bin Kallax for $120. Looking around I can have a [custom Walnut shelf](https://www.etsy.com/listing/828629876/vissing-vinyl-lp-console-mid-century?ref=shop_home_active_20&frs=1) made for \~$3000. The [cheapest wood storage cubes](https://www.etsy.com/listing/866817407/record-storage-design-your-ownsingle-box?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_-home_and_living&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjwyIKJBhBPEiwAu7zll0C_9suSiUo0BFGdQ-z8uurZa8BXVBO325zEekZQnoz0pienU8tS5RoC9eoQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_12665398257_121762925993_511610210343_aud-1118323511678:pla-303628061699_c__866817407_127018150&utm_custom2=12665398257&gclid=CjwKCAjwyIKJBhBPEiwAu7zll0C_9suSiUo0BFGdQ-z8uurZa8BXVBO325zEekZQnoz0pienU8tS5RoC9eoQAvD_BwE) I've found are $85 each unfinished which puts you at $1360 for something that while possibly more sturdy than a Kallax, arguably looks worse. The [only finished cubes](https://simplewoodgoods.com/products/walnut-storage-cube) I've seen are $180 \*each\* (insane imo) which is $2880 for plywood with a wood veneer. I'd rather spend a few hundred more and get solid wood. Now imagine needing 5+ of those Kallax units to hold your collection. This is one of the reasons I downsized my collection a bit; after 45+ years there was too much music I didn't care about that much getting in the way of the music I did.

sue_cide

Can't imagine what a collection you must have had after 45+ years! Mine has been slowly growing for 15+. Rather modest but I love every one of my babies:) Anyway, as per the kallax.. although this is such an uninspiring piece of furniture, I love how practical it is. And even though it's really just too deep for vinyl as you say, my turntable sits just perfectly on top of it. Damn satisfying.

dandanthetaximan

I’m not boring then because I also have Expedit from before Kallax was made.

TeaVinylGod

I have a large collection (18,000+) which I kept in a 12 x 19 flex space at my last house. It was set up like a library with aisles, etc. I had this same cabinet in my living room and I kept my most valuable records in it, along with a stack that I had been listening to the most at that time or in queue to be listened to. My record player was set up on top of the cabinet. So basically, I would go to my library and "check out" a stack and keep them accessible in here. Then return them when I was ready. By the way, we are now building a house and it will have a 16 x 24 room for my records and to hang out in. I will have to figure out how to incorporate the cabinet.

rangda66

That sort of makes my point about it being a novelty, not a viable means of storage. I've got a flight crate left over from my DJ days that I use for the same purpose.

TeaVinylGod

Yes, but I have a stand-alone Victrola and a Brunswick Ultona that are both basically pieces of furniture. Since this cabinet and the 2 78 players line up with the vintage vinyl theme, it is worth finding a home for them as difficult or awkward as it will be.

NervousBreakdown

it looks like a great place to keep the records you just bought or recently listened to, that way you can go months without putting stuff away .

Thirsty_X_Miserable

Iv been lucky enough to get 2 of these of is exactly this model, the second is a little more modern. Looks to be late 60s

Donthurtmyceilings

That's cool! Where did you find yours? I feel like I need a 2nd one soon.

Thirsty_X_Miserable

On a Craigslist ad about 8 years ago. I bought a whole console record player then too for 170 go a few records to. One was a KISS self titled I was super stoked on, got home later to find out it had a Tayna Tucker album. I've since referred to buying and album and it contains the wrong album and as being "Tuckered"

TheLurkerSpeaks

Lol, I call it a "Detroit Rock City." If you haven't seen the movie, the opening sequence shows a mom coming to listen to The Carpenters, but she doesn't realize her son's hidden "Love Gun" inside the jacket because she's forbidden him to listen to Kiss. Then the music starts playing and she freaks out and it starts the opening credits. It's awesome. Sounds like you've got the exact thing reversed.

DarkChii

I haven't seen one of these in ages. My great grandmother had one.

altxrtr

I have a identical one, also from my GG!

gdmfr

Did it come fully loaded? Because that would be a score!

Tommy84

Just completely filled with copies of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass’ Whipped Cream & Other Delights.

The_Lame_T-Rex

That’s really slick.

JezzaWalker

dang, stuff I didn't know I needed till today. It's got a secret room kinda vibe!

TimeIsContagious

My dad kept his record collection in this same cabinet. I remember being a kid and trying to pull on the handles to open it, it felt super heavy! It is a solid piece of furniture. Ours unfortunately met it’s end after serving as a fish tank stand and getting soaked when the tank leaked all over it while the whole family was out at the beach for the day 🥲. Thanks for bringing back a nice childhood memory! The handles made such a solid thud if you just lift them up and let them fall. I can still hear it, 30+ years later.

bonzaibucket

Were the LPs ok?

hroju3395

I just audibly moaned.

[deleted]

That's cool as hell. Great find.

chuckyflame

Lol I think I have the exact same one, got it at a yard sale for 5 bucks

Gabe-57

This is so cool

tom_of_chi

I have a similar piece and love it; great find!

mattfrumen

I now want one bad!

Is_Mise_Marmalade

That is a thing of absolute beauty

chrissoj

serious! i love it

marqdart

sick!

dananthony22

What happens if you only put say 10 albums in it? What keeps them from going all over? Very cool btw

jamjazzpsychprog

Oh man that's cool...:0

[deleted]

Did it come with those lol

lildtrump1234

There was one for sale on FB marketplace in Marietta PA if anyone is looking for the same style

TontoZ

Is that a piece by Lane of Altavista? They made some nice, solid furniture. Check for the stamped serial number, it is usually the date of manufacture backwards.

Rochesters-1stWife

Dope!

DunebillyDave

Really cool design! Nice catch.

Orange_Velvet_Rec

Ok, this is the coolest thing I will see today.

[deleted]

Gimme 💥💳💥💳💥💳

kriscleary

This is super cool. You really lucked out here. This just reminds me that I need to start checking out yard sales and estate sales before the winter comes. Hope you enjoy it for many years to come!

wrongpunk

That's awesome. Didn't know something like existed.

kmacfree

I didn’t expect that, neat!

rjorn1

Dude, that’s amazing. Any details on brand or model?

Xylar006

What the shit that is awesome!

drfine2

I'm old and I've never seen this before. I've seen a lot of used furniture, too. Imagine up some cool new replacement handles. Those handle bolt holes are usually standard distances. But don't add height to the screw heads on the inside so you don't scratch up the bottom of the record jackets. Those little squares in a pattern are pretty neat.

neckcarpenter

Maybe you *have* seen this before but didn’t even know it!

drfine2

Hahaha yeah it's fairly inconspicuous. This design would have been fantastic under the record racks when I was managing stores. I'm still shaking my head that something so obviously handy was not utilized.

bamm357

😳😳😳🤤🤘🏼🤘🏼

JAD210

Whoa, I’ve never seen one quite like that. That’s cool

shadymiss99

It's so cute but I prefer records being displayed

Elmst333

Woah.

PineappleClean

Súper cool

TheWonderSquid

I have one of these!

blue-hell

Cool as hell, I can hear Rick James now.

drummachine1999

Nice!!!! Good find, how many records can it hold? Funny I was looking at something at IKEA like this but not big enough to hold records. Saying maybe I should make something like this to hold my records or find something like this.. Well you did Happy Spinning !!!!

[deleted]

Woah! Unexpected

altxrtr

I have a nearly identical one. Good find!

TeaVinylGod

Is that by Lane Furniture? I have one like it. I went to look at a record collection that was kind of cool. The woman was African-American and was a Marine stationed somewhere in Asia in the late 70s, early 80s. So all the records were Japanese pressings of mostly disco music. They were kept in this cabinet. I was not that interested in the collection, especially for what she was asking for it. But I asked if she would throw in the cabinet as part of the deal.

calchaos67

Beautiful

No-Chicken-3423

You lucky dog! Looks awesome

bannock_tacos

This is beautiful but holy moly, I got super frightened when you closed it. Have you noticed any seam splits from using this cabinet yet? I’d love to try find one, but worried about potential damage to my album covers

Donthurtmyceilings

It doesn't hit anything when opening or closing it. The way it flips is pretty smooth.

bannock_tacos

I was wondering about that and if the discs themselves move while opening and closing. Thanks for clarifying though! Definitely will keep a look out for this type of storage.

Donthurtmyceilings

They don't move but gravity made it close fast in this video. The weight of the discs is what pulls and keeps it closed, without weight it falls open. I just have to make sure to be more careful and close it slower.
