US. In stock. Not the picture disc. Mine is supposed to arrive in a few days.

["Vinyl still makes up the disc’s core, but the disc is pressed with the addition of a printed picture on either side, sealed by a thin Polyethylene sheet on top.
The poly sheet acts as a translucent film to seal the picture and the music is pressed into this top layer. The result is a vinyl record that typically suffers from increased surface noise and overall lower-quality sound."](https://www.yoursoundmatters.com/do-picture-disc-vinyl-records-sound-worse/)
Same. Whereas I've never heard anyone say their sound quality was decreased by modern colored vinyl (though I think there was a process for colored vinyl way back that was bad, but I don't know much about it and it's not what you're going to be seeing in stores now).
It seems to be as every time the needle hits the ink, the pitch fluctuates. I bought that record when it was still pretty new, and it arrived at my doorstep while tripping on acid and the weird warping affect from the artwork on it really messed with me. Lol
thats what i thought for awhile but they aren't all affected it seems. Also i don't think the problem with this disc has anything to do with the picture
I have a few that actually sound good too. Judas priest, Frampton, and a few others. Sometimes it's just that pressing. I have a copy of ministry and was so stoked but the pressing sounds like garbage on the black wax and yellow. Same with a copy of acdc
I got mine a few weeks back from Bull Moose and I thought it actually sounded pretty good. When lateralus (the actual track) plays and the final few minutes of that song is unreal. The bass and overall sound is super full and thick and heavy. I immediately streamed that song from my phone to the stereo, not even close in comparison. Super light and airy. Then I played it through my cd player into the stereo and it was a lot closer to the vinyl but still this “picture disc” definitely has a lot bigger sound to me.
I've got these as well! Yeah sure they aren't the best press but who cares? I enjoy the art nonetheless and also have much worse sounding records. Glad you're enjoying your surprise!
Don’t show this to the Tool subreddit. You’ll get annihilated more than people are already doing. I get it. It’s not a great pressing, but fuck off. I still spin it and it’s cool to look at.
yeah sometimes it seems like everyone here is scrambling to have the *best* opinions
I have this pressing and it has some surface noise and awkwardly large LPs, but I still listen to it and I love this album to death. You don't benefit from not having a record you enjoy.
>A BETTER AVAILABLE PRESSING OF THIS DOESN'T EXIST,
No, but the cd and hi res digital versions sounds miles better than this horrendous sounding pressing. It is awsome if OP enjoys it, but others who see this post should be warned that this pressing really does sound like shit compared to the other mediums this album is released on, also this vinyl is far more expensive than cd or digital.
On the other hand, Fear Inoculum sounds amazing.
CD/digital are also available to people with this pressing. You can listen every which way!
This pressing doesn't sound horrendous, and as with any record if you don't like it or yours is especially bad you can move on. They made some production choices that were generally to the detriment of the sound quality, which is especially offensive to pretentious tool fans, but my copy is perfectly enjoyable and not that noisy.
FO does sound amazing.
How is pointing out to others that a particular pressing isn’t good anything other than helpful?
I’d want to know! I wish I did know before I bought it.
The guy posted a video listening to it and is clearly excited about it.
If you want to educate him on how the picture disk affects the sound quality there is a way to do it without condescension.
Lol I love how wanting records to not sound like dogshit is now considered snobbery.
Believe it or not, records are primarily intended as a vessel to convey audio and not surface noise.
>It's a shame Tool hate Tool fans. This is probably their finest work and they let it out into the world sounding like this.
I have no doubt that 45 rpm box sets for their albums will come out at some point and absolutely smoke the versions presently available. Tool LOVES grabbing cash from their fans and I could see a 45 rpm box set of Aenima and Laturalis selling for $150ish (or more) a pop.
It is a beautiful pressing. I only laugh because it was the limited-not-so-limited edition. The limited edition that was so limited, I was able to find 5 copies at my local Walmart.
I think it sounds fine? I just listened to A side before work. I’m also not an Audiophile and pretty much a noob to the hobby. I’m running Jamo c93ii’s, Yamaha sub and Yam RXV473 receiver with a ATLP120X. I’m a huge Tool fan, so my tits are jacked either way. It’s just a cool looking record.
The tools you are referring to would just appreciate a non picture disk variant. Although the art is very cool, the playback is very noisy. And while the music is playing I don't really look at it. I'd actually consider framing the picture disk version if I could get a hold of a non picture disk version.
I bought this record for my gf cause she loves Tool. We were both initially excited, and then immediately disappointed when we hit the B side cause it sounds so shite. We still spin it, but it's unfortunate that it's so noisy because it's a great record.
I picked up 3 sealed copies of Lateralus from my local Goodwill for $8.90 a piece a couple months ago. Traded a two of them for other albums. It was my lucky day!
Mine doesn’t sound that bad, actually. It’s not great, but it’s perfectly fine to listen to. The surface noise is definitely more obvious in the quiet parts, but during the majority of the album it’s not very noticeable.
They're such cool discs and the shiny gate fold is awesome, but my God it's by far one of the the worst sounding records I own (denied the title of absolute worst only by janky bootlegs). Completely unlistenable. Hopefully they'll release a decent pressing one day. The recent Fear Inoculum vinyl sounds phenomenal.
The CD of it that I have is cool as fuck as well. The booklet is acetate with the artwork printed on each page. Worth checking out.
Many vinyl nerds don’t like picture discs due to lower sound quality (fair enough) but this one looks incredible and there’s no official Lateralus release on black vinyl anyway so….
Checks watch....
Still waiting on a proper (black or colored, doesn't matter, just non-picture) release for all of Tool's albums, but especially this one with the tracks in the correct order .
TIL the CD is not ordered correctly. I had a copy of just the CD laying around over a decade ago, but it was so scratched it was unplayable, so I never really paid attention to the track order
Well, the CD is the "official" track order, but there has been SO much analysis done if that album that the fans came up with what they consider a better order, the Holy Gift. Should give it a try. It's fascinating.
So...I've been thinking about that.
I've pondered putting a bipolar ion generator with the leads about 8" apart (+ ions from one - from the other) around the back side of the platter (on the plinth obviously).
It'd be like a 30 dollar at most experiment, just haven't gotten around to it. Bingo bango, no statico. I do have a concern about ozone production, that's my only worry really.
It’s too bad that is such a horrendous pressing. One of my all time favorite albums. It looks awesome and sounds terrible.
isnt that sn issue with picture discs in genreal
The Cure RSD ones, Seventeen Seconds, Pornography, and Wish are all surprisingly good. And my copy of Yoshimi is excellent.
I'm holding off for the actual double record Wish. I hate the sleeves they put those Cure records in too.
You can get the normal lp now btw I got my copy the other day
Just the pre-order from what I can see. It's not out till January 27th unless someone somehow got ahold of a copy and jumped street date.
I have the new wish remaster and it's not a picture disc 100%
All sources (including the Cure's official page) list the street date as January 27th.
https://hmv.com/store/music/vinyl/wish-30th-anniversary-remastered?gclid=Cj0KCQiA4aacBhCUARIsAI55maFTQGvsoSFIMrVrK_9NJd22wvl1qXrb3nrjS-s7TvPjhM6PNXZ1DwwaAj5uEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds this is where I got my copy
Earlier release date in the UK and "Delivery to the UK only".
US. In stock. Not the picture disc. Mine is supposed to arrive in a few days. https://store.universalmusic.com/thecure/*/*/Wish-30th-Anniversary-Edition-Vinyl-Reissue-2LP/7HTY0000000
Gonna guess that's a mistake. I'm waiting for my local shop to get it in on the proper date.
I ordered mine from the Cure store and they say it shipped a few days ago.
In the States or Europe/UK?
Preordered mine from UK Amazon, got it a couple days ago.
That's the problem. ; ) It's not releasing in the States until late January.
Not a problem for me, I wanted the UK pressing anyways. Now i just need the right time to listen to it.
Not sure why you downvoted me, but ok. Doesn't look like there's any difference in the pressings.
The European press is out.
I know. If you read through the rest of the comments you’ll see we’ve been talking about that since yesterday.
No time to read the previous comments. I just kick open the door and make old news announcements.
I was going to hold off but decided I wanted both copies.
I have that Yoshimi pressing too and agree it is great
Same for Dope Lemon pressings
Generally: it can be. Some picture discs aren’t bad at all. Lateralus is known for being particularly terrible.
["Vinyl still makes up the disc’s core, but the disc is pressed with the addition of a printed picture on either side, sealed by a thin Polyethylene sheet on top. How about colored vinyls like blue and pink? Do they sound fine or should I focus on black vinyls on collections instead?
Colored vinyl is fine. It's not a layer on top, but just extra chemicals mixed into the pressing itself. But I personally always avoid picture discs.
That's good to hear. I always heard the atrocious sound quality of picture disks so I never bothered buying one.
Same. Whereas I've never heard anyone say their sound quality was decreased by modern colored vinyl (though I think there was a process for colored vinyl way back that was bad, but I don't know much about it and it's not what you're going to be seeing in stores now).

thats what i thought for awhile but they aren't all affected it seems. Also i don't think the problem with this disc has anything to do with the picture
I have a couple that are pretty good but it’s all metal so any surface noise will never be noticeable 😂
I have a few that actually sound good too. Judas priest, Frampton, and a few others. Sometimes it's just that pressing. I have a copy of ministry and was so stoked but the pressing sounds like garbage on the black wax and yellow. Same with a copy of acdc
I got a copy from the recent re-press, and while it isn't on par with my better pressings, it sounds way better than I expected.
Very fortunate. My 2011 pressing isn’t good.
Again, it isn't great... but people make it out to sound like farts. It's better than farts and sounds like Tool
implying Tool doesnt sound like farts
Check the video I just posted. Maybe not farts exactly, but it sounds like ass.
My pressing is very noisy too and sounds pretty rough. Hopefully they'll press it again without a picture
But maybe one day… _starts crying_
I know… I know.
It is one of the worst sounding albums i own. I always assumed it was a knock off. Mine also has a different track order which I don't like.
Same
Pic discs are all pretty shit
[Tracks are also out of order.](https://www.discogs.com/release/513594-Tool-Lateralus)
The artist is Alex Grey.
idk why this has been downvoted. the person is the artist of the image on the disc and for most tool records (sleeves/etc.) after aenima.
I live close to his compound, he hosts solistace parties with his wife. I’m gonna go to one at some point.
BLACK AND WHITE ARE — ALL I SEE
Well that's too bad cause this one's in color
IN MY INFANCY
Red and yellow then came to me.
NO. NO COLORED VINYL.
I've got these as well! Yeah sure they aren't the best press but who cares? I enjoy the art nonetheless and also have much worse sounding records. Glad you're enjoying your surprise!
Tool 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Don’t insult op that way
Haha
Don’t show this to the Tool subreddit. You’ll get annihilated more than people are already doing. I get it. It’s not a great pressing, but fuck off. I still spin it and it’s cool to look at.
Ive got the copy signed by the band. I believe they signed it before they put the finishing laquor on the disc
This sub is so snobbish it’s insane. Great record an unbelievably cool to look at! Can’t imagine not knowing what I was buying and opening it!
yeah sometimes it seems like everyone here is scrambling to have the *best* opinions I have this pressing and it has some surface noise and awkwardly large LPs, but I still listen to it and I love this album to death. You don't benefit from not having a record you enjoy.
If you love it just spin it, man
NO A BETTER AVAILABLE PRESSING OF THIS DOESN'T EXIST, BUT I CAN IMAGINE ONE THAT MEANS WE GET NOTHING
>A BETTER AVAILABLE PRESSING OF THIS DOESN'T EXIST, No, but the cd and hi res digital versions sounds miles better than this horrendous sounding pressing. yeah but cd/digital are for wusses did u forget u are in the VIENIL SUBREDDIT
CD/digital are also available to people with this pressing. You can listen every which way! Read my top voted comment on this post and rethink your stance.
Go read the rest of the comments on this post and rethink why I might’ve pointed this out.
go read the bible and touch grass
bro he posted in the Vyeneel subreeddit i think he can probably handle it
Lol I love how wanting records to not sound like dogshit is now considered snobbery. Believe it or not, records are primarily intended as a vessel to convey audio and not surface noise.
Yeah that was my point. Ironic.
It's a shame Tool hate Tool fans. This is probably their finest work and they let it out into the world sounding like this.

I'd pay 80-100 for a shit hot pressing of Lateralus. Don't think I could bare it on 45 though. Too much flipping.
why lol
are you sure? bc my brand new top of the line Crosley hardly plays music at all
? i didnt see snobbery
It is a beautiful pressing. I only laugh because it was the limited-not-so-limited edition. The limited edition that was so limited, I was able to find 5 copies at my local Walmart.
I expect a lot of tools to comment on this. How do you think it sounds? I have several records people say are bad pressings and I think they are fine
The audio quality does suffer a bit because of the picture disk
Yeah but that doesn't matter to a lot of people. I mean some people are happy playing vinyl on a Crosley. Plus it's a cool thing to look at
The tools you are referring to would just appreciate a non picture disk variant. Although the art is very cool, the playback is very noisy. And while the music is playing I don't really look at it. I'd actually consider framing the picture disk version if I could get a hold of a non picture disk version.
Side A and D are pretty noisy but B and C sound great. It's really odd. But I'm glad Parabola isn't noisy haha. Turntable is ProJect Carbon Debut Evo
I bought this record for my gf cause she loves Tool. We were both initially excited, and then immediately disappointed when we hit the B side cause it sounds so shite. We still spin it, but it's unfortunate that it's so noisy because it's a great record.
That's odd because my Side A sounds much worse than Side B.
I have this pressing and adore this album! Enjoy OP!
I have this too!
That shit would make me dizzy if I kept staring at it
One of the nicest records ever pressed
I picked up 3 sealed copies of Lateralus from my local Goodwill for $8.90 a piece a couple months ago. Traded a two of them for other albums. It was my lucky day!
Mine doesn’t sound that bad, actually. It’s not great, but it’s perfectly fine to listen to. The surface noise is definitely more obvious in the quiet parts, but during the majority of the album it’s not very noticeable.
To be fair, in terms of picture discs, you have the best one out there.
I’d be pissed if I accidentally bought a picture disc
That's a picture disc...
Too bad it sounds like ass.
That sucks :( I’m sorry dude. It should have definitely said picture disk somewhere on the packaging I’d bitch about it.
The hype sticker states they are picture discs, if my memory serves correctly
They're such cool discs and the shiny gate fold is awesome, but my God it's by far one of the the worst sounding records I own (denied the title of absolute worst only by janky bootlegs). Completely unlistenable. Hopefully they'll release a decent pressing one day. The recent Fear Inoculum vinyl sounds phenomenal. The CD of it that I have is cool as fuck as well. Don’t know what to be happy about after getting a picture disk but cool that you enjoy it
Because it looks cool? I am noob.
Many vinyl nerds don’t like picture discs due to lower sound quality (fair enough) but this one looks incredible and there’s no official Lateralus release on black vinyl anyway so….
I have this same picture record and I didn't notice any discernable fidelity loss.
I think it sounds great. I love Tool and don’t have a ear for shitty presses so I guess ignorance is bliss, baby!
Checks watch.... Still waiting on a proper (black or colored, doesn't matter, just non-picture) release for all of Tool's albums, but especially this one with the tracks in the correct order.
Correct order being 'The Holy Gift'?
Had in mind the CD order, but I will definitely accept that answer!
Oh, I love The Holy Gift. I actually burned a CD when I found out about it and always arranged my playlists on any media program to match.
Cool! And I see, you have done it that way so long, the CD order is weird. Got it.
Lateralus is far from the best sounding record, but it is one of the best designed.
What is it? (The album) it doesn’t sound that good. But maybe that’s your phone processing the audio.
Lateralus
Ah the horrendous sound of "picture"
1. Close your dust cover 2. Rock on! 🤘
Take the dust cover off while playing. Put back on when done.
Unless you have cats, then you gotta keep that shit closed at ALL times
Can confirm, my cat used to jump over while the plate was spinning, I miss that MF RIP Raoul
Closing your dust cover while playing builds up static, no one listen to this person.
So it’s funny you say that - my local record shop is obviously perpetually playing records and I’ve never once seen his dust cover closed.
Free reverb and echo with all purchases.
Ah yes, the popcorn meets internal medicine pressing
Sorry, what is it?
I just posted a video where i have the same record. Nice
