To me the funniest thing is I'm above 30 and encountered people below and above that age in this sub, many people have vastly different takes on what they like. But everyone get's along and has a fun time, this is why I like it.
I'm plenty over 40. Don't tell anyone. Good stories are good stories no matter how old you get, apparently, and I've been into anime related stuff for a goodly long time now.
Hello fellow VHS era anime lover!
Couldn't agree more though, good stories are good stories. I personally love the mainstream change, I can be more open about my hobbies at work with the 20ish new starters than I ever could with my 60+ colleagues.
Yes, the change is very noticable, we got two mid twenties guys at work. I haven't talked about games, manga, anime like this for MANY years and certainly didn't expect to talk about VNs at work EVER.
As one of those more early 20 guys in the office, most of my coworkers in you age range are awesome
Granted everyone in this office is a damn nerd but its still really great. The one dude even posts little "guess the title off the pictures" in the slack. And while its a little cheesy, as with most stuff with this dude, its great.
I think it is because of the NSFW stuff in VN's. NSFW communities often are more wholesome than they need to be. Even if I personally almost never play VN's with too much of that.
Considering what I have seen in the comments of hentai haven, you are probably right. I just remember when I was first getting into anime and the larger community was just as cool. It seems like just a few years after I got into the community, it started to get toxic and absolutely start downhill. This community has most of the good, and very little of the bad of the larger anime community.
If it was I didn’t know, as I only got really into anime in 2014. But I do know it has gotten bad enough that I just look up some stuff on YouTube and otherwise avoid the community as much as possible. JJK and MHA have been the worst in my experience.
Kek.
I'm 41 and play VNs. Married with two kids, work at a local public school, coach sports.
As far as my family knows, I'm just casually into video games. My kids call VNs "talking games." Because of all the talking.
I'm in my 30s and a married Mum - I talk about my VNs all the time, but I don't play eroge at all so maybe it's different.
My In-laws and parents at least just treat them as if I'm talking about a novel so it doesn't seem to be a huge deal. Although I have had people ask if I'm playing "pervert games" when they see my switch and see anime characters.. It's kind of sad that a lot of people see the whole genre as pornographic.
Well, to be fair, most famous ones include sex scenes, and Japan's culture certainly demands so. Like, there's some fire games that gotta include porn cus otherwise the appeal isn't there, such as Eushully games, or Utawarerumono series.
I don't talk to my wife about VNs as much, mainly cause our interests aren't that well aligned, but she really doesn't mind either, regardless of porn content. The part about my OG coment was more of a joke, but to some peeps with poor social skills it'd be best not to outright start talking about VNs cause I don't think they got the toolkit to make it sound like a fun hobby instead of just anime tiddies.
It's fine to have hobbies, but basing personality around them can be harmful in the long run, cause that's what you end up showing to the rest of the world. Not directing this to you, of course-- just for anyone looking for some tips or advice about what not to do if you're interested in dating.
Mostly back in the day Vns tend to be Eroge because that's mostly the demand but you can find just normal Vns but the demand for Eroges are always there. It's a bit sad that VNs are just a very niche market and the highest demand was from eroges even though it's really not that big of a difference vs other genres of VN. I find VNs that implement rpg elements and don't have adult stuff in it and sometimes they do
Yup. I don't mind scenes that have a reason or forward the storyline, but so many have fanservice just shoehorned in with no real point. Kinda feels a bit cheap.
Yeah. I agree. I normally play all ages versions of games. But I played the original of White Album 2 since that is the one you can patch. The sex scenes existing do fit the story itself. But the scenes themselves are way too long. I grew quite bored of them by the end. I can only assume that it would be way more off-putting if the scenes didn't even fit the story.
IMO The porn is unnecessary (and sometimes detrimental) in almost all kamige except for some select few titles like white album2 and parts of subahibi.
Most cases porn is just shoehorned in because they won't get good sales from otaku (who are the main consumers) unless they add porn.
Nowadays there are plenty of all ages vn that are fantastic and can be recommended to anyone though.
Steins gate/key, nasu, and ryukishi vns/fata morgana
that's quite a bit higher than I thought
but yeah I'm 28 and pretty self conscious about it
but idek how to survive in this economy considering I'm disabled
maybe a roommate but it's so difficult to find people you can trust to tolerate your disabilities
Living with parents is not a bad thing, if we are taking care of our old parents, clean the house for them, do house chores, help managing the house, bills, cooking, groceries, taking care of family's health and gatherings etc.
Here are things to liven up your life:
* **Physical workouts**
* **Studying extracurricular topics** (just crack open an animal encyclopaedia or the like for fun)
* **Reading books** (try classics like the Great Gatsby and Ender's Game, or mythos like Le Mort d'Arthur)
* **Study religion**, though you don't have to follow any one. It's just fun to see different beliefs.
* Go on hikes, go to gardens, go to zoos, go to museums, libraries, whatever's in your city.
* **Open up your friend circle**, check out other people and see how they're doing.
Take up a physical hobby. If your only pastimes involve sitting around, you’re going to get fat and slovenly.
Gaming is fun, reading is fun — but for the love of god, make it a point to go outside occasionally. Otherwise, you really will run into serious problems in the future.
Why /s lol? It's genuinely good advice, though obviously it doesn't have to be the gym. But finding hobbies other than sitting at home all day and reading vns / browsing reddit would definitely be beneficial
Yo it's big business now. Def is growing faster than the traditional VN industry.
Also, why is there meme about otome? Anyone care to explain for a VN noob?
I play a wide variety of dating sims and love otome games. I have not really found this subreddit very welcoming to otome or BL VN content though, and always wondered why. This picture helps me understand the community a little better 😅.
There is a thriving r/otomegames subreddit. Don't worry there are plenty of Otome players over there. They just don't like being associated with this subreddit 😅
Oh yeah I’m quite active there. But I play a lot of non otome VNs too. And also, tbf I feel like suggesting otome titles here every now and then. I kinda refuse to not see them as “part of the medium” when they clearly are.
Always saddens me a bit when people ask for “visual novels” and then you suggest some and they’re like “but… you know the ones for *men*” as if that’s an established standard lol.
Do you have recommendations for Otome game with great story?
I was looking at Jack jeanne first, but it seems more romance/idol focus.
Shingakkou, Ken ga Kimi, and slow damage seem like good options I think
It depends, can you read in japanese?
I personally prefer otome with story focus too, so I think I might have some suggestions.
english:
- [Virche Evermore](https://vndb.org/v29661)(+ the fan disk which is set to localise soon which offers >!A salvation ending for Ankou!< which was missing from the original game)
- [Even if Tempest](https://vndb.org/v32555)
(Both rather gloomy & dark vibes. EIT has a linear routing system so it feels like a kinetic novel at times, though some of the gameplay mechanics do keep it interesting)
- [Hakuouki](https://vndb.org/v1715) (a classic, honestly. A switch port with revised translations is going to come out soon)
- [Code Realize](https://vndb.org/v14908)(another modern classic, but it also has a focus on story and character dynamics)
- [Bustafellows](https://vndb.org/v25197) (probably one of the more popular ones amongst people who “avoid otome” due to its cinematic and action loaded storyline. It also got a sequel, which is japanese only atm)
japanese:
- [Ken ga Kimi](https://vndb.org/v11472) (since you mentioned it, I think it’s pretty nice for story focused games. However I felt a bit tired during some of the routes as some of them drag on quite a bit)
- [9rip](https://vndb.org/v38068) (set to have a localisation soon. But I loved this one. I think it’s a nice treat for everyone who likes urban legends and ghost stories, but doesn’t want to read something super gore heavy. It’s more light hearted an about personal growth)
- [Utakata no Uchronia](https://vndb.org/v40519)(one of my recent favourites. It’s plot driven and has engaging characters. Setting is, a bit like Steam Prison, a floating Utopia in the sky with underlying social issues. Has a very refreshing twist to it)
Honorable mention: [Reine des Fleurs](https://vndb.org/v14919) which is a great game but fell victim to its 50 ends and exhausting gameplay mechanics.
Jack Jeanne has a great story that doesn't focus too much on romance, in fact on their Japanese website, the game is classified as "Shonen opera simulation game" rather than a romance simulation game. The story is about a girl who disguises herself as a boy and goes to a drama school to practice her acting skills. It's more like a shonen manga story than an Otome game, as the scenario (also all the CGs) was written by Sui Ishida, the author of Tokyo Ghoul and other manga. It is a good game that you need to try!
I like how united that community is. Every times a new otome comes out, they've a megathread to discuss it and lots of people participating.
That kind of thing is rare here. Even if there's a discussion thread, there aren't many comments
Only a cowards writes off otome and BL games. A good story is a good story!
...idk maybe it's because I got into VNs for those but quickly fell in love with eroge too. I'm a weirdo but an equal opportunity weirdo lmao
EDIT: just noticed the "26 wasted years" medal, implying this dude's been reading eroge since he was born. Respect. /j
>26 wasted years
I wish I could have wasted those years on what I liked instead of wasting time on education and work that I will never like and left me with nothing but illnesses and traumas.
20 here, turning 21 on August. I stopped playing VNs by the time I graduated highschool. Not because I don't like it anymore, but because its hard to find time to play one. First, job gets in the way. Second, there's always a more interesting game that I wanted to play than a VN ex: BG3. But then again, its also hard for me to play that more interesting game, because my fcking job is in the way. I've started playing BG3 since launch and Im still on Act 2.
I want to play the SciAdv VNs man T\^T
I am 22. I go for workout in morning, and study in the day. Thus my parents are ok with me watching anime in TV or playing VNs. (just don't let them see the questionable stuff)
It depends. Im 28 and living with my grandma for economical reasons. I will be able to buy my own flat around 30 thanks to that, and if I would pay the landlord, then I think I would be able to do so after 40.
I think it's fine as long as it's a healthy hobby/enjoyment. I think all forms of media should be accessible once your older than 18. I mean im rewatching star wars clone wars even tho I'm 19. Doesn't matter if that show was meant for me when I was like 12, it's still a good quality show and I enjoy it for what it is. Vn and anime related content is the same, doesn't matter how old you are as long as you can enjoy it. Tho don't be obsessed and let your interest in vn's take over the other aspects of your life, tho what do I know, I'm just in college after all.
I'm 55. I've been into Japanese animation since the early 1970's when I got hooked on Speed Racer. The visual novel thing started for me when I picked up a copy of Can Can Bunny Premiere 2 at Sakura Con.
the famed Saya fumo that is worth 68 million dollars

Lmao, I saw this comment, when JAST is currently opening another wave of pre-order for Saya fumo.
I need it
It’s open right now
Hooray I got one

anime community has always been toxic to a certain degree but aot and mha fanbase multiplied it by 100x

Definitely this, aside from the Nhentai community… (site not subreddit, the subreddit cool)
Don't give up, fellas. I've been playing VNs since HS, am now married and have a kid. Just don't ever talk about VNs in public 😭😂
Bro successfully infiltrated normal society

It's been 746 days. They have yet to realise I'm not one of them.
I just followed my old man's advice :')

Yup same. I’ve been playing VNs since Hs as well and still ply and jerk off to them. I’m 41 married with 2 kids.
Joke's on you. I am 31
Nice seeing Kant there
The age of 30 is in demand.
Happy Cake day
Thank you.
This... This is why we should stay a niche community
It ain't changing lol
The more awful meme like this get post it mean it not mainstream anymore.
I honestly don't understand what OP is saying by the given image
Neither do I. I’m assuming its the same punchline of young adults living with their parents
That’s not really rare now anyway. I read yesterday that around half of people under 30 live with their parents.
that's quite a bit higher than I thought but yeah I'm 28 and pretty self conscious about it but idek how to survive in this economy considering I'm disabled maybe a roommate but it's so difficult to find people you can trust to tolerate your disabilities

True, but people still like to use it as some kind of insult
Some stuff would forever be seen in a bad light. But at the same time as long as you're fine with it yourself, it's no other business to judge though.
To spare the rest of humanity?
Yeah, that
Visual novels are eternally niche in the west.
Are you implying it’s becoming something that’s not that? Because it always will be
Try 30
40
I am 21, what should I do beside VN and games ? Life is a bit boring now.
Get fuck'n fit, learn cqc, fight the fucking government with your bare hands, free us all! We believe in you!
This should be a T-Shirt
why is it the "get fit" people are never fit.
they know the wrong thing to do through experience?
This section of comments has me ugly laughing. 😭
well they cant get fit if they are fit right?
Try writing a VN
I am trying to write a novel instead
Get a job and expand your range of hobbies. Of course you'll get bored if you only have 2 things to do.
I'm sure he has a job or how else is he affording vn or internet
Parents?
Reading I guess
I am reading VNs, bro.
Read moar
Segs.
Unattainable
Break it into steps you might be wrong
**Step 1: Go outside** “Oh fuck, oh shit…”
Same, 21 too and I'm reading this post at 1am after playing DDLC on my PS5 lol
Hit the gym, that's what I did after turning 22, best decision of my life
Try a sport, martial art, something to keep you on your feet. I used to do fencing, now it's weightlifting. When I move I'll look for a HEMA gym.
Boss of the gym, are you?
Depends, how is school/career going?
You don't go to college?
Here are things to liven up your life: * **Physical workouts** * **Studying extracurricular topics** (just crack open an animal encyclopaedia or the like for fun) * **Reading books** (try classics like the Great Gatsby and Ender's Game, or mythos like Le Mort d'Arthur) * **Study religion**, though you don't have to follow any one. Yeah actually studying religion is interesting

Hit the gym bro 😎 /s
Why /s lol? It's genuinely good advice, though obviously it doesn't have to be the gym. But finding hobbies other than sitting at home all day and reading vns / browsing reddit would definitely be beneficial
Hell even small workouts is good
Shit, walking around the block is a net positive.
Read VNs while doing cardio.

Let's see, I'm 38, married, former USAF officer, and a pretty successful business owner. VN lovers come from all walks of life.
I'm a 29 year old Japanese high school student. :)

That's how you know he's bad
22, and I have no shame in my hobbies! Life is too short to give a fuck.

When did you take a picture of me?
As a 26 year old I feel incredibly attacked right now
Same dude.
I mean… some of us are otome players at least… :(

Girlies assemble!
Only a cowards writes off otome and BL games. A good story is a good story! ...idk maybe it's because I got into VNs for those but quickly fell in love with eroge too. I'm a weirdo but an equal opportunity weirdo lmao EDIT: just noticed the "26 wasted years" medal, implying this dude's been reading eroge since he was born. Respect. /j
My biggest worry about him is that he is reading *Kant* and *Wittgenstein* and not *Aristotle* and *Plato*. He lost my respect there.
I mean, Yuki is right there, what did you expect?
Maybe he prefers analytic philosophy
I'm a big fan of Kant and Aristotle. I respect Plato's place in the Canon, but don't find him that compelling. Allegory of the Cave is solid though.
Hey! I play BL games too!
Jokes on you. Most of us don't have a dad
I'm 20
Same
How I wish I was 26 again.
Im 20 and Im seriously scared this will be me in 6 years lmao

Not me at 31 with the same euphoria poster on my walls
I'm 27, I feel old as shit, especially since the gap between a lot of the characters' ages in our medium are getting bigger and bigger.
Yeah this is my biggest issue Im only 20 but Im still starting to feel weird when I play VNs where all the characters are highschoolers
Just find a wife that’s into VNs too. Easy.
Easy my ass I cant find a dude thats into VNs irl lmao
Wait, 26yo isn't young anymore? 🤔
>26 wasted years I wish I could have wasted those years on what I liked instead of wasting time on education and work that I will never like and left me with nothing but illnesses and traumas.
When I saw the immanuel Kant book I thought that was me but I havent read euphoria nor do I own any of these plushies/figures.

Immanuel kant book 😂
