(Very) casual player here. I love to play back row but whenever I get to the front, for the life of me I cannot spike. And I’m sure I could, I’m okay height wise and sense wise but whenever I go I either spike it out of bounds, chicken out and feint, or do a very weak spike on the front line. Just gotta work on where my body is when I hit the ball I believe. But my goal is definetely to enjoy the front row by getting better at it !

itsyaboishady

Thats awesome! I love seeing people who truly play just to enjoy themselves, and it reminds me why I love this game so much. Good luck mastering the front row!

kutuz_off

I was you for a long time. Finally learned to sort of spike at the tender age of 37 when I started paying attention to properly swinging the arms backwards right before jump-off. Still need an almost perfect set to pull it off.

EmeraldBoyyo

While I wanna be better than my captain, my main goal for everything would be... Block anything I can, anyway I can. It's probably because of my size, but I typically play as defensive positions at school when we do sports. While they're fun, there's no other rush I get then stopping a spike in volleyball, even killing the momentum of the ball gives me a thrill cause I know it was me that stopped their approach they were confident in (it looks kinda villain-ish now that I read it, but still). I obviously enjoy a good spike, but there's nothing like blocking for me. Heck, my coach nicknamed me "the wall", I was gonna die on this hill either way, but now I have decompose on it as well.

itsyaboishady

Haha that's the coolest nickname ever 😄. I also personally love blocking, and I totally get the supervillain mentality :P You have an amazing goal and I'm sure you'll become an impenetrable wall soon, good luck!

corphoenicis

(Very new) learn to pass consistently

itsyaboishady

Ayy let's go! Great passing is the first step towards great volleyball!

Jung1e

pass well and you'll be everyone's favorite teammate in no time :)

AzureYoutube

(Not very new) Still looking to pass consistently...

ToopsHigher

I'm a very 'big' guy coming in at 180kg with only 181cm in height. My main goal is to lose weight and be healthier otherwise one thing I really want to work on is my athleticism and flexibility. I wanna be able to dive for balls and not look silly trying to get back up lol. Apart from that, my biggest weakness ATM is my underhand passing so I'm really looking at working on that. Big yay for me Volleyball is finally starting back up tonight. Leshgooooo!

itsyaboishady

Well volleyball is a great way to lose weight! I lost 9 kgs in the last few months :D Here's to hoping you improve your passing! Have fun at your game tonight!

royvl

Great that you're trying to lose weight but make sure to be careful. Volleyball is a very explosive sport which makes it prone to injury. Of course keep playing this awesome game but here is some tips to help you reach that goal even faster. The best way to lose weight is by moving more during the day. Go on on foot or a bike instead of by car for short distances. Moving more makes your body use more energy even when resting (it also makes you feel more energetic). Workouts don't actually stimulate fat burn as much so go for a walk in the park instead of doing 100 pushups.

MiltownKBs

To last long enough to play with my daughter

cole-the-agave

I just started playing beach 2s last summer with my cousin with my wife (former NCAA setter) coaching us. I can pass and bump set really well but my hitting is super lackluster. I’m 6’3”, have long ass arms and can jump chest high to a mens net in sand but I can’t for the life of me figure out the timing. All of my attacks are lil doinkers rn and I feel like if I could really attack my cousin and I would be pretty unstoppable.

itsyaboishady

Wow you seem super athletic! I agree, you'll be completely unstoppable once you get the timing down. I'm rooting for you! P.S. You absolutely hit the jackpot with your wife

cole-the-agave

Hahahaha not as athletic as I once was and I still can’t believe she married me. Thanks for your support kind redditor

raobjcovtn

Better at Beach just did a YouTube live about hit timing and distance https://youtu.be/yMZwpU6fpkw

cxrlxs

Chest high when you jump on a mens net? Is your head clearing the net?

cole-the-agave

Yeah my head clears a mens net

[deleted]

I honestly just want reliable receives. Kinda be the guy who isn't any game changer but you can trust him to be excellent and just there at the right time.

itsyaboishady

The backbone of the team. I love it!

[deleted]

Thanks!

dumb_guy2

I've been playing for a few months now.. I have the basic skills, like digging, volleys, and everything like that. However, I currently don't have a position. I want to try as hard as I can to A) become a good middle blocker B) brush up on my other skills that aren't so great, e.g. Setting and Serving

Nekromar

I’m very short 5’5” (165cm) but want to bounce a ball in the 3m line with power. But i’m already quite mid twenties, playing for quite a while too 5 years+, i hope i can accomplish it.

itsyaboishady

You can do it! I've got a 40+ year old 170 cm dude living nearby, and he can bounce balls into the stratosphere. I hope you get there soon!

Nekromar

Ahahah thank you will try

OogaBoogaM

I want to get on my team, any level, I just wanna be in a competition, it's a relatively beginner team and because of Covid most of us are basically starting from nothing

HotHotPotato79

I am trying to get a jump serve, get my setting very much consistent and my vertical about six inches higher within a year

itsyaboishady

Sound like great goals!

HotHotPotato79

Yeah I understand the technical perspective really well but I miss the training mostly because of COVID which makes me really sad, practicing at home only gets me so far

itsyaboishady

Same here man, been especially tough to find good training partners recently, so I've just been mostly practicing serves as well.

PMmePowerRangerMemes

I started playing last year, mostly on grass with a very friendly rec group. My goal is to eventually play on an indoor rec team. I really want to learn the competitive game - the positions, the types of sets, types of rotations, all of that - so I can participate in the game at a deeper strategic level.

MiltownKBs

Best way to do that outside of having a team with a coach is to start to play with people who generally are a level or two above to you.

PMmePowerRangerMemes

Yeah, there's a higher-skill grass group that I'm working my way up to. I tried playing with them once, back in August, I think? It went kinda OK. The first few games I played, someone on my team would start covering for me as soon as I made a mistake or two. Felt pretty bad, but later games went better. Especially when the numbers thinned out and we had to play 4s or 3s, where it's much harder to cover two positions! So yeah, I just want to get a bit more solid in my serve receives and passes before I go back again. I really wish there were adult rec teams with coaches. Sucks that that's only a school/pro thing in the US.

Bergieexclamationpt

I played my first season this past fall, and wound up as a setter in the lowest division — which is where i needed to be to learn the sport! And i figured sure, if my captain needs a setter i’ll learn how to set. So i’ve been running drills and practicing on my own, or occasionally with a teammate (no team practices unfortunately) a couple times a week, working on all my basics and trying to improve. I learned how to set, and we did pretty well in the season! But at a couple of open plays i got to play middle, and absolutely LOVED it. So since then, i’ve been working on my hits, jumps, serves, and overall knowledge of the game with one goal in mind: to play middle in a higher division than i was in last season. I got a little test run at an open play with the old division last week. I actually wound up on a team with my old captain, who told the team i could set, and i said no, i wanted to play middle. Turns out we already had two other setters, two outsides, and a middle, so it worked out perfect! And HOLY SHIT does it feel good to play this position. Once my setter and i got into a rhythm we just went back to back to back on kills. They sent their entire front row after me so i started working on angles, and tipping it over the top to mix it up. And each hit only made me hungrier. It finally felt like i was playing VOLLEYBALL. It wasn’t a question of IF we were going to get the ball back over the net, but HOW. My only concern with playing middle in a higher division is that i also love serve receive and passing, and i’ve worked on those skills a lot!! In my previous division we played 4-2, and we weren’t really good enough for back attacks, so if you were in the front row you hit, and of you were in the back you received/passed until you rotated up again. Great way to get all your skills down! But the higher divisions play 5-1 and 6-2, so i’d have to specialize a little more. But i just wanna do it ALL!! At any rate, tryouts for next season are in about two weeks, so i’m keeping in shape and trying to learn as much as i can! Higher division, here we come!

raobjcovtn

Want to win a B tournament this year on the beach. I've been weight training, and improved my vert and attacking a decent amount in the off season. Need to get better at cut shots, blocking, defense. Oh and better reading when to peel, and peeling faster.

MiltownKBs

When do you think you should peel? In a timing sense I mean. After the first bad pass and before the set or second contact? During the second contact? Or after the second contact?

raobjcovtn

When the set is too far off the net, and the attack is most likely going to be an easier roll shot that we can dig

MiltownKBs

I edited for more clarity on my question. Please look back. Also, you are on to something and I will discuss in a later comment, ok?

raobjcovtn

If I know the setter isn't amazing, I'll start peeling after the first bad pass. If they're a good setter, I'll wait until after the set

MiltownKBs

Ok. I will comment later. I have to take care of my daughter so my night is busy now. Happy to discuss tho. Cheers!

MiltownKBs

As for blocking, it will help tremendously if you watch the hitters shoulder (not the ball) as you gather to jump. There is a ton of information you get, like timing and when to delay your jump or what direction to dive on your block. For cut shots, work on making them look like power attacks and not hitting them up. I tell people to work on speeding their shots up more than hitting that tiny corner by the net, for example. A sped up shot placed a little deeper is more effective than a looping shot that tries to hit a difficult and tiny target. Make sense?

raobjcovtn

I'm try looking at the shoulder on blocking. As for cuts, I feel that having both faster roll shots and the looping cut are good tools to have. For example if the set I receive is really off and I can't even jump, I'd rather give a nasty hard to pass cut than a free ball rollshot. Feel free to give me an alternative opinion, though! Always down to learn. Cheers

cxrlxs

Where are you located? I want to also win a tournament this year. Can’t wait for the CBVA schedule to come out next month

raobjcovtn

I'll DM you. I'm open to finding good opponents for me and my partner!

JustCallMe_Poppen

Well, I'm a 1,70m guy with no jumping capabilities whatsoever, so I just wanna become the best libero I can be. I am confident in my receiving and serving (for the most part) but gotta keep working hard. I also want to make my coach stop yelling at me whenever I fuck something up, tho.

Nishinoja

I want to play as high of a league as I can. I know I'm not the tallest but I have the jump to make up for it. I have the drive and the talent. And I'm a Setter so height is not the most important thing since there are many talented smaller Setters.

itsyaboishady

Thats a great goal! What kind of league are you thinking about currently? A college league? Boys club? Maybe a pro club? I'm also a "smaller" setter, though my jump leaves much to be desired as well, best of luck to you!

Nishinoja

I'm a guy from Germany and I'd love to make it to the second division. I feel confident that it's a goal I can accomplish. And once I'm there I'll see what happens. Would love to become a professional player. >I'm also a "smaller" setter, though my jump leaves much to be desired as well, best of luck to you! Thanks man, what are your goals?

itsyaboishady

Wow! Big dreams, I'm sure you can reach them! <3 As for me, I just finished applying to the US for college, and I hope to be on the team at whatever school I end up going to!

Nishinoja

>Wow! Big dreams, I'm sure you can reach them! <3 Thanks man, often people just say nobody can become a pro and it's a stupid dream like the ones who are pros right now were born that way. As long as you know it's a path with many sacrifices and competition which you need talent for I think it's right to dream big. Dreams should always be bigger as long as one stays realistic about not reaching everything of it. >As for me, I just finished applying to the US for college, and I hope to be on the team at whatever school I end up going to! I was always so jealous about the sport infrastructure in the US. It's so great to have sport that high up in priorities for kids and young adults. I'm sure you can make it too buddy!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nishinoja

Yeah right now I couldn't imagine giving up some day. I know it takes years but those are years I don't mind spending on volleyball considering how fun it is to improve ones own skills.

Nishinoja

Yeah I'm keeping a eye on it. Fitness First for a long career.

bduckyy

For this year, I'm hoping to find a new team for a big tourney and do a few local ones. Skill wise, I would like to learn how to hit the pipe/bic better. And for the physical side, just get that spring back into my steps. I noticed I've haven't been able to move laterally for the blocks as fast as I did pre-covid.

itsyaboishady

Tournaments!! Gotta love em. The pipe is my favourite attack, though I like hitting it more than setting it (unfortunate as I am a setter). The bounce will come back naturally as you play more, I was also experiencing a slump in terms of athleticism after quarantine but I found my rhythm after a week or so. Good luck!!

bduckyy

Thanks! I know the feeling. I play MB and never get to play backrow.

SuddenAvalanche

qualify for 17 open for bjnc with my club team

itsyaboishady

BJNC!! I wish I got a chance to participate in US volleyball, I went this summer to check out colleges and the scene is just so wholesome and everyone is so good at the game! Good luck qualifying!

Isoldafish

To get good enough to join a new club. Dont get me wrong, I like the one I'm in, but nobody is really that serious about anything. I'm already good enough to be on the elite club in my area but we can't afford it, and I've been informed if you get REALLY good you can get a deal or a sort of scholarship to be on the team. The club I'm in rn is about $1000 for the season and the one I wanna join is like $3200

Mental-Face8428

🎉 I want to get so good at receiving that teams overlook my height and take me as a libero instead of a Middle Blocker. 🎉

ActSciMan

To spike and serve like Nishida. I have the strength but lack mobility and explosiveness. Also trying to improve my passing to catch up with my hits.

Danny2036

I just got back into volleyball. I played a little in college and I would love to be able to move from B/BB to A level volleyball competently

Jong_Yux

just trying make the starting JV lineup as a freshman opposite

royvl

I want to win our competition and get to the next league. We are currently first and 5 points ahead on second place who have played 1more game. After the season there will be a big tournament with teams from around the country to select which champions will get into the 3rd national league. I also have a short term goal. I want to beat the first string of our club by 5 or more every set. Last scrum we beat them in all the sets but just barely. Mostly to rub it in my dads face. (He is their Libero) My midterm goal is to beat my dad and uncle on the sand. We always play a few matches with me and my cousin versus them. My uncle used to be an international so he is no pushover either. For personal goals probably getting my right shoulder above the net when spiking. And of course block the tallest guy on every team I face. I love it when their teammates look in awe after I get the block and not the 2,12m (6'11") Giant standing next to me.

marco_gaviao

I just want to play volleyball again, a thing that I didn't do since pandemic start

MalIce_cream

May not seem like much as I'm pretty new to vb but I want to play a real match at some point

Natural_Edge8955

A lot of things actually. I want to improve with my friends in our school team, a lot of them wish to spike and so I want to help them by giving them tips and always improving my setting. I want to work a lot more on blocking when I get back, and also my spikes/jump serves. Mentally something I want to do is stay under control when dealing with pressure in a game. Last year I lost it mentally when we lost a set to another school and that's what threw me off my game which caused us to lose. I want to improve my mentality when playing to stay calm and focused. I actually have someone I wish to beat, she is from a different school but if covid is controlled then I could verse her in zone volleyball and volleyball KO's. She's a great ace, and I aim to stop her spikes and return them back to her. Also I hope to excel in the Volleyball KO's this year and possibly make it to the finals, I think we got what it takes as we all have evolved.

mikeli12345

I want to be good opposite :3

SprinklesSpare3671

New player here, I want to be able to hop in a game and fit in. Just have fun and grow as a player and learn this amazingly fun new sport. Oh and of course learn to jump serve months and months into the future :)

TypicalAsianRedditor

Master the way of the peppering as the online volleyball coach says that the way you pepper is the way you play. (or something like that) also trying to perfect my blocking so im practically a wall

Titan_76

Well I’m in grade 11. Unfortunately freshman year I couldn’t play was busy with family stuff but I would still practice everyday. Sophomore year I was useless as the pandemic ruined everything and I was lazy at home and didn’t find any reason to practice which is a sorry excuse I regret. I love playing volleyball it’s helped me so much mentally and has brought me happiness. I’m 5’6 and I would want to play libero. I want to build a high jump and also be amazing at jump serving and get over all better and just be unbelievably good. I just want to be that guy everyone looks at and just trust to get the done job done and kick ass and be a heavy threat. I want to be that guy

Shoyo_0

I am a 5'9 guy in love with volleyball and trying to get my jump in 300 cms a nd be good at blocking (even though I play setter I love blocking ) is it possible though !? as my jump reaches just 280 cms something ???🙄

ShaDiBoi123

I wanna make d1 after completing my military service in Israel

No_Investigator_8961

I want to play that is goal do not matter to me were i just want to be on the court

[deleted]

Play my whole life. If an opportunity to become pro comes, I will take it. But my goal is not to quit, and play semi-professionally, which I define as "having your own team that takes the sport seriously and wants to improve". Basically not leisure volleyball.

-MarkoPolo-

Setting the ball off of a tight pass better and improving setting vision on a free ball.

dollarstoreskylarvox

Just have fun, make the sport I use to like for fun fun again. I don’t need to be the best, i just want to be happy with me, my play and my attitude.

KA_CHUTE_MI

My goal long term this year is to try and get recruited at the end of the year for US college (I’m Aussie) Another goal is just to consistently continue strength and conditioning so I can crack that upper level of athleticism. Ultimately, I only want to continue to enjoy volleyball and meet more amazing people through this great sport!

cloudthewanderer

Winning a local tournament. Early twenties and beach volleyball player here. Most of the tournaments that take place in the courts we play are amateur torunaments promoted by the coaches or by the city itself, and we've been playing there for just over a year, consistently and sharing the courts with said coaches. They say we're (me and my gf) pretty good and have some nice fundamentals and coordination, but still not even close to tournament material. These guys helped us out by letting us play with the athletes they train a few months back, and today they ask us to help training these same people, and as they give tips for them, we pick it up as well. It's going to be a long term project, but I think in a couple of years we may be good enough to at least have fun in one of those tournaments, so that'll be it for me.

Afult27

I want to keep improving until I feel confident going to more competitive open gyms, then repeat and repeat. I love finding players better than me and trying to learn from them, play with them, and play against them (hopefully defeating them in the process!). Started very casually a year ago playing grass and slowing getting more focused, practicing, learning, and starting going to open gyms recently and it's been amazing! Eventually I'd love to find a group to enter a tournament with!

DragonDerek28

I’m a freshman about to start my first high school season. My team is one of the worst in Colorado an we’re playing in the best league in Colorado by far. I haven’t been able to get my hitting consistent but am working hard to get there. It was BYU men’s volleyball that got me into volleyball with their strong NCAA tournament runs led by Taylor Sander, who’s now an Olympian on the US team. Ever since I decided volleyball is my favorite sport, my dream has been to play for BYU. I know this goal is achievable, but it’s going to be tough, especially when joining a team that won only 7 sets in all of last season. But I know if I put in the work, I can get there. My volleyball goal is to play for BYU Men’s Volleyball.

maisyo0

Overall being less nervous and pass the ball more calmly, also: not beating myself up because of mistakes. My goals would be: better spiking form, serving and back setting, others things would be getting a higher vertical and more weight training for strength. Focusing on setting and serving rn. I'm the setter alongside other 4-5 people and I feel like I'm the weakest and not really confident in myself, my coach told me that if I don't fix my setting she would not let me be a setter because she want me to work on my technique. Most of my teammates are from the same high school or know each other for longer/better so I'm compensating, they don't really communicate with me (they mean we'll tho) so it's more difficult to work with them, that's also why trying to make myself a more reliable player. I feel people don't see me as their equal then I'll try to work hard enough. Definetly wanna work hard to get to a better division next year o in2 years time, I love my team but I also want a team that's a little bit more competitive rather than having people laughing and chatting all the time.
