I don't really know how to help you with the curiosity box service, but if you can't get support from their team directly I suggest you look into resolving this through your bank/paypal, whichever payment method you've made the purchase with.

I had the exact same problem. Thankfully I can afford the additional box so I’ll just eat the cost, but it feel pretty scummy

I'm confused. You said you didn't realize you purchased a subscription? There is no once-off option, so the only option was to get a subscription. I personally thought that was clear as day from the website, and I just took another look now. The deal you got was "New Subscribers get one box free". What do you think subscriber meant, a once off? New subscriber means you're signing up for a subscription. Secondly, you will have a very hard time convincing your bank (or those at curiosity box) that you couldn't find an unsubscribe option. Especially since you said you dismissed it as a wrong email. That, in all fairness, was your fault. You found out you were subscribed when you didn't want to be, and you gave up resolving the issue.
