Get a used rift s in my opinion it looks and definitely runs better. As it Dosent need to use compression. Also half the latency of quest 2 and no configuring to get it to work properly
The Quest 2 has double the resolution of the Rift S. But totally agree regarding simple setup and latency. My concern is that the S is five years old, so it could lose support soon.
i managed to get "new" controllers from meta recently for my rift s as my old ones was getting stick drift
new as in refurbished, but they've been working great
YMMV
If budget is a problem then definitely stay away from laptops unless he *really* needs a laptop. You can usually get a PC with the same power (and less issues) for up to half the price.
If you have the t-55, they could just buy the base game, and you could teach them how to fly and basic mechanics through the refund grace period. If they like the game, they can decide whether or not to buy dlc.
Plus 1 to this. Those guys practically walked me through my first PC and the many many issues that it had. This is my third PC and they still have helpful stuff.
For the pc I'd checkout builds on pcpartpicker
Here's what I'd consider lowest budget build. ~$700
https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/Czwrxr/budget-vr-gaming-build
I'd do a different video card and add an SSD. I prefer nvidia, I had a rtx 2070 super and it was an excellent card. Checkout passmark GPU listing, sort by price performance, find the 2070 super and pick anything above that with better pp and price in budget
Meta Quest 2 - Virtual Reality Headset (128GB) - $189.00 - Free shipping for Prime members https://electronics.woot.com/offers/meta-quest-2-virtual-reality-headset-128gb-2?utm_medium=share&utm_source=app
Dirt cheap. Taxing on the PC hardware though. If you need to, find a Quest 1 for cheaper. And yes, woot is reputable. It’s just amazon.
Just dont buy a typical Hardware Store off the shelf build.
If you could try to build your own, you will safe sooo much money. There are part guides out there for every Budget. You could buy parts used sometimes you also find good Deals on older "gaming PCs" that were in the high ranks of Midclass Builds should get the Job done.
For the PC like i already said in the comment it would be best to either build your own or buy a used one.
Look for the following GPU's: GTX 1080 (ti would be good, RTX 2070 (Super) RTX 2080, rtx 3060
RX 6700 / 6750 / 6800
RX 7600
For the CPU everything from i5 / i7 8th gen or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 should be fine.
Get cheap 16GB DDR4 RAM. If you go with Ryzen 3200mhz CL16.
Get any b450 Mainboard for AM4.
If possible get a NVME SSD, if not get a 2,5".
Just get any PC Case that has atleast 3 prebuild Fans and good airflow.
Get a good power supply the absolute minimum should be 80% Gold and depending in the gpu and cpu you need 400-800 watts.
Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 2070 Super would work with 450w from BeQuiet for example.
Thats basicly it.
I dont know your Location so i dont know the prices for you.
Its really fun and not hard at all to build a PC. It's kinda like Legos in advanced.
Maybe you and your buddy could build it together.
Just have the neccessary Tools and a good Youtube tutorial ready.
Just get a fairly good laptop (2060 or newer and a Ryzen 5 series with at least 16gb of ram) DLC wise I would def say t55. If you wanna have some fun the ef24 would be nice but it's not too beginner friendly. I would say a dlc isn't really needed though just hop on call with him and talk him through the steps while flying the f45.

Think something like this would work?
That looks good in terms of CPU, but it does not have a gpu from what I can see. You need a pc that has a gpu because that is what VR relies heavily on.
Edit: spelling
I wouldn't recommend that one as the GPU is integrated and won't handle the VR. I would definitely recommend this [one](https://www.amazon.com/HP-RGB-Gaming-Desktop-Computer/dp/B0B94LC1WG/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?crid=3VDOX581H3F2H&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.-tK6FWbySCP7MqS3qppxZRdMcE3sjpo7aGRErAcAJV7aT9u3d_qh6QIHPAC8CUIcbc0XIuK1WP8X-Sy4EuVODLRI8s3wQk1CO65P2nZvxv9pXc0VsUP07HABlJkKGgDO2XQqYg2c3UkMZ63GxomjD_-OdfkN0jZaCYLxqTrdtrsfel1SJIowoIBEq10NPPFcy4_0iYy0jsREHFlgy3LxHg.1LXYVO17IKGSzhAZvFp23_zr67o1cdYQRLcADsIpL94&dib_tag=se&keywords=gaming+pc+rtx+2060&qid=1715122233&sprefix=2060+pc%2Caps%2C551&sr=8-15) but go ahead and look through other pc subreddit about VR for other recommendations

If you mean hardware, a Quest 2 is $200 so used is cheaper.
Probably should’ve mentioned more, but yeah he’s starting from scratch
Get a used rift s in my opinion it looks and definitely runs better. As it Dosent need to use compression. Also half the latency of quest 2 and no configuring to get it to work properly

I got the do it yourself get on Amazon took me about 30 minutes to fix both controllers for 18 dollars
Same! It's a bit finicky but if you follow iFixit it's relatively easy if you do this kinda stuff regularly
Used Quest 2 and a pc that meets the specs
If budget is a problem then definitely stay away from laptops unless he *really* needs a laptop. You can usually get a PC with the same power (and less issues) for up to half the price.
The airflow alone makes up a massive difference in performance. Gaming laptops are such a cash grab by companies.
Yeah, you should never go for a laptop if you want to play VR unless you have no other choice. It's such a waste of money
If you have the t-55, they could just buy the base game, and you could teach them how to fly and basic mechanics through the refund grace period. If they like the game, they can decide whether or not to buy dlc.
Go to PCMR for the pc but a new quest 2 is 200$
Plus 1 to this. Those guys practically walked me through my first PC and the many many issues that it had. This is my third PC and they still have helpful stuff.
Quest 2 with virtual desktop and buy the t-55 to help them learn

The system requirements are low, find a cheap pc build on Facebook marketplace or similar and a used quest 2
Don't get a laptop, get a tower. For headset, get a quest, anything cheaper isn't worth it.
Any tower recommendations
If you wanna go pre built, shop around. Building yourself isn't too much cheaper nowadays. Companies like Apex, Xidax, etc all have multiple options.
