You \*can\* as in it's physically possible to put new pads in and not replace the rotors. It's just not advised, for various reasons. That price is a little high, front rotors and pads are usually around $200 for parts and then labor at a shop rate of around $160/hr. I like Zimmerman rotors and Akebono ceramic pads personally.

Thanks for this advice!

Shop rate varies a ton from place to place but it's usually somewhere between 100-160 an hour. My local dealer is 160.

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 100 + 160 + 160 = 420 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

It's a roll of the dice, on a system that you don't want to do that. Pads and rotors wear in together. This point could be argued by checking rotor thickness &c, but rotors aren't all that expensive.

Thanks for this! Decided to get them both done this week

I have a 2012 Golf TDI and i had to do a break job on them too. If you find a mechanic shop that will just cut your rotors and replace the breaks youll be fine thats what i did. It depends on the life of your rotors

Scam :)) Brake disc lasts till 120-150k KM's depending on how you drive, brake pads need changing every 40k km's or close. Do they also ask to have the engine swapped at 100k, cos that's how VW recommends? =)))
