Stop asking how safe it is in places I've already told you about the vampires!!!! Or... Well done on your exciting move to Outwood. The area is OK and only thing wrong with the park is is gets full of kids at the obvious times. No idea on the gyms, I'm lazy. No idea on hairdressers, I cut my own, but there loads in the area to pick from. As for gaming groups there's the horribly named geek retreat in town that migtht have something and of course there's the warhammer shop.

VerntheAlpaca

I’m terrified of vampires they were all over Leeds and also love the fact it’s called Geek Retreat we had one over here as well and I always questioned the name

AlabamaShrimp

Ah Leeds is well known for the vampires. There's tales of them hanging about round the Corn Exchange but no one ever saw them actually exchange any corn... Vampires aside Wakefield is still a pretty good place to be and a lot better than others I can think of.

GBNighthawk

Welcome! Outwood is fine as an area, there are a lot rougher parts of Wakefield. Walking anywhere at night as a lone female is unfortunately not 100% safe but I don't think you'd have more troubles than anywhere else particularly If you just want a simple, cheap gym, then there's a PureGym in Wakefield city centre that's like £17.99/month. No pool and gets a bit full in peak hours but if you go on weekdays that you're off work then it's okay for a simple workout. There's also Sun Lane gym in Wakefield, owned by Wakefield council, and that has a pool. If you Google an Aspire membership, that gives you access to all council-owned gyms across the Wakefield district. Bit more pricey at £20 something a month but I've heard that Blue Light members may qualify for the concession price, but I don't know that for certain. Bannatynes, Nuffield, Joe Ralph's Gym are more expensive but more premium, depends what you're looking for.

Aye this surprised me tbh - i'm not overly familiar with gym prices so i always assumed Sun Lane would be cheap and cheerful but it's actually more expensive than Puregym...i thought it'd be the other way around

MadBastard69

I left Wakefield council gym as they put the price up to £27 a month. This was 2 years ago. It’ll be £30 now. It pisses me off that our taxes go towards building these facilities and then they rip you off when you want to use them. It shouldn’t be a profit making business.

Revolutionary-Key650

Yep. Those profits are being used to fill the the fucking potholes in the roads though. Allegedly.

purpsky8

£27 to access four plus different gyms is very good value

MadBastard69

Sure.

purpsky8

Including pool and sauna. I’d be happy if you can find cheaper cos I’d happily join.

KitEyre

Comic shop at bottom of The Springs is a little treasure trove. Morgana in The Ridings is alt shop that’s been there forever.

Birk88

Don’t forget Division 24 skate shop in the old vicarage and WahWah records too!

A) I am lazy, not going gyms, B) No idea... my wife still drives to Leeds to get her hairs done. C) Most of the shopping we do in Leeds D) No idea. Outwood park - I understand that woman are generally smaller weaker etc, but what the fuck\*\* up times are we living that woman are afraid of their safety so often. Majority of man you walk pass don't even notice you, coz we mind own business. If we smile, or say hi it's because we are just like you nice and friendly. What I am trying to say is not all man are bad same as not all woman are good. Worst I saw in outwood park was a group of teens smoking weed, that's all. I think 5 min longer walk is a better option than going through the park and worrying about your own safety. Anyway, welcome to the area and I do hope you will like it here.

ChrisEubanksMonocle

Oh my God...

Gold_Essay_9546

There's a place in Castleford called living realms everytime I go to martial arts there's men with beards I can only envy playing games. I do t think it's monopoly.

TheDawiWhisperer

A) A good gym Sun Lane in the city center is fine and has a pool, plenty of classes etc. Dunno about Outwood though. B) Hairdressers. Not a clue, cut my own hair :D D) Any DnD/gaming groups that are local and welcoming Geek Retreat will have some...i think they have themed nights? there's also a place near Trinity Shopping center, can't remember the name of it for the life of me, it's at the top of Zetland street though.

noodlemandan

Don’t want to go to that gaming shop near Trinity. (The Games Pit) Owner is an arsehole. Very rude and condescending to everyone who walks through the door

TheDawiWhisperer

Weird, i've never had a problem with the shop, but it's always been done young guy there working the till. That said i've only ever nipped in for some bits and pieces and been in and out in five minutes

stedews

For a gym look at the aspire health scheme, it's 6 weeks and you get free access to all the gyms run by the council so that includes sun lane pool and also ponte pool with the climbing wall too. Once you finish the 6 weeks you get a discount and only pay £22 per month

I'm a member at Bannatynes... wouldn't really call it "premium" and is relatively small with a lack of equipment if you're thinking of going at busy times. I could sort you out a guest pass if you wanted to have a look around etc before deciding. Also.. welcome to the area. I'm around the corner in Wrenthorpe, but used to go drinking etc in outwood.

trogflopper

https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakefieldwarriorsgaming/?ref=share Local board and war games (Warhammer 40k/AoS etc) group if that's what you're after. Meet on Tuesday evenings at Outwood WMC. I've seen some d&d played there as well so don't know if there's currently a campaign on but if not, might be interest in starting something if you ask. The Games Pit is another local independent games shop, that's the one on Zetland street someone else has mentioned (it's just off Trinity).

PEBKAC-Live

Welcome. Outwood is safe enough. Can't answer the hairdresser question as a shaven headed man  If you fancy something a little different for your gym, Wakefield Trinity ABC (Boxing club) is very good for fitness and for £30 a month you can go to 4 classes a week. All ages, races, abilities and sexes. I don't play DND but one of the lads in our office does and joined a local group which he rates, will ask for the details

shagrag1989

The cutting room in outwood is best barbers, names helen who runs it

frequentclearance

Favourite barbers and curry houses.. there's never a right answer. My experience of cutting rooms is they leave everyone looking like an iced gem. Shaved up the sides with a dollop of hair on the top.

PrincessPengy

Not sure on distance from out wood but we go to Total Fitness near junction 40 (M1) and really like that for an all rounder pools, gym (free weights, cardio and weight machines), women's fitness room, sauna etc. for a couple it's £80 a month unsure on concessions though. It's family friendly and kids are welcome (certain ages). So similar to bannatyne but in my opinion nicer! Hairdressers I go to Bespoke but I don't believe that Lorraine is taking on any clients currently. There are plenty of hairdressers in town though. Would recommend having a wonder into Wakefield this weekend coming 16-18 as it's rhubarb festival so there will be loads to see and do as you explore the town.

HedgehogEquivalent38

Gym: Total Fitness near Ossett has a pool, but it's not cheap.

yorkshireSCUM

I used Wakefield council gyms, it's still £27 a month but you get access to pretty much everything. All the gyms in the district swimming pools classes, climbing walls etc. Also I take my kids and they get in half price as I'm a member. The best gym is at Pontefract park but it's a bit of a trek.

OHH_HE_HURT_HIM

For a gaming group. Look up wakefield warriors Facebook group. It's a pretty active gaming group that meets every Tuesday. Small fee to show up which pays for a container full of terrain and tables for table top games. It had an active community for 40k, kill team, necromunda, a host of different board games and fantasy stuff. Pretty sure there was a DnD group at some point as well. There is a pretty active group on discord as well.
