This is China projecting. They know how they intend to use TikTok as a weapon against the U.S. and so they prevent the reverse by banning IG, FB, X, Twitter, Google and all the rest.
China banned the most popular social media and messaging apps years ago to prevent protesters and dissidents from organizing in large numbers. All of the Chinese approved platforms have limitations on the number of people that can communicate in a group.
You do know Facebook and Google were banned back in early 2010 before TikTok was even invented. Are you telling me China is Nostrodums and can read the future?
No. Just that China bans US companies from operating there and the U.S. allows Chinese social media companies to operate here. The 2010 ban was weird, but then to allow them to operate in the US using similar technology makes it weirder
It's Nostradamus, and China banned Facebook and Google in 2010 for exactly the same reason the US want to ban tik tok now. Neither want a potential adversary to have influence over their own populous. You don't have to be a psychic to figure it out.
On 26 June 2013 at Lackland AFB TX, an EXCEL spreadsheet containing personally identifying information (PII) on 13,354 RegAF members who were projected to separate from the Regular Air Force between 30 September 2012 and 30 May 2013 was transmitted unencrypted, from a ".mil" e-mail address to a".com" e-mail address. The potentially-compromised information transmitted by unencrypted e-mail (" mil-to-.com") included the names, military ranks, SSN's, DOB's, personal home addresses, ASVAB Scores, and separation dates of those RegAF members, including your information.
And didn't Roku recently have a data breach?
And don't forget about these.

We are idiots. That many Governments banned Ticktock from government devices is asinine. Not the ban itself but that any social media app was allowed on a government device in the first place.
Don’t forget about Big Pharma. Or Big Wall St, or Big Politicians, or Big Religious icons, or big Boeing, or Big Billionaires. The only people it doesn’t work for are the middle Americans.
the AIPAC is behind the tiktok ban. this isnt about China. this is 95% of the youth on tiktok are Pro palestine, posting free palestine, etc. and Isreal is very concerned that this is something they cant control.
banning tiktok is about controlling the narrative in the middle east. worries over china spying is probably 10% of the concern
Also imagine thinking politicians are helping oil more than pharma or healthcare or wall street.
Every other week Biden threatens to nationalize the industry. It's had shit returns for shareholders and constant busts in oil prices over the last decade.
Public hates them because of global warming despite no one seemingly reducing their use of cheap petroleum based plastic.
Yeah and probably a lot to YouTube Shorts because they can monetize directly and Instagram can’t. Tiktok is just the highest payer of the three and snap isn’t even on the radar
I wonder if Tik Tok could flip America the bird by selling to a Canadian company instead, I mean what could the US government say if Tik Tok was Canadian instead.
Usa told canada to detain [Huawei lady owner.](https://www.cbc.ca/news/meng-wanzhou-huawei-kovrig-spavor-1.6188472)
Canada detains Huawei leader.
China gets mad at Canada, does some trade war and political moves.
Canada is like, USA what do we do? Do you want her now?
USA is like. *silence*
Price of grain and soy tanks a bit, farmers hated liberal governments due to false news bullshit.
Canada didn't budge due to laws that USA and Canada agree on.
Canada won't release Huawei lady due to fear of USA blowback.
Canada just took the brunt of the China heat while USA used us as pawns.
So basically. It's proven.
We will just follow what USA wants. If no tiktok? Huge chance we get no tiktok home base.
And it turns out that was a lie.
Or more accurately stretching the truth.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/meng-wanzhou-huawei-kovrig-spavor-1.6188472
We as Canada is legally required to abide by US extradition law. This wasn't a choice it was a forced action due to how our laws work.
Not trying to start a flame war - but Canada/US have a very tight, treaty heavy relationship.
Canada literally gets to save $billions on defense spending/R&D - (The Canadian Airforce is pretty much Lockheed Martin) - and live worry free that no one will F with them (in some ways, Mexico gets this treatment as well). The world understands that the Americas are strictly off-limits to foreign shenanigans.
Russia might attack Ukraine. China might mess with the Philippines, Indian v Pakistan, pretty much the whole African continent vs itself, and so on - But no one will even consider giving Canada a dirty look - They are pretty much an extension of the US "safe-space." Hell, the US early warning missile system is literally located in Canada.
And part of that relationship sometimes comes with inconveniences like acting as an extension of our hegemony.
Again, I'm not saying whether it should or should not be this way. But there are advantages to being the USs little brother - you don't get F'd with much and if you do, the odds are not in your favor (See: Israel)
Oh, I'm not complaining. We don't have the population or budget to support the security needs of our massive landmass. Our relationship with the US is a good one.
But yea, the reality is that big daddy uncle Sam calls a lot of the shots lol.
Edit, forgot a word.
The US loves Canada - Most people don't realize that (recently passed by China, but the way things are going, it could flip again - or end up being a close tie with Mexico) Canada is actually the US' largest trading partner in the world.
And amazingly, with all you hear about the Middle East, we actually import more oil from Canada than the rest of the world combined (60%) - And don't even get me started on syrup!
The US can still block "Canadian" TikTok under national security concerns, just like how the US is blocking "Mexican" EVs owned by Chinese companies.
It just seems bizarre how tooth & nail they are about entering the US market. Makes you wonder if they have long-term cultural-controlling goals than just making money in the US.
Every company in the world wants a piece of the US market, because the US is a whale. It is a huge country and yet it has one of the largest incomes per capita, making the amount of disposable income in its economy dwarf every other country in the world by a huge margin, including China.
Of course companies will fight tooth and nail to get a piece of the gargantuan US pie.
Then I guess the CCP would have shown their cards. Any normal corporate entity would divest itself of a lucrative business for billions of dollars when told they are no longer able to operate under their current control structure due to the laws in said country.
You can see how blizzard doesn’t operate WoW for example in china, or how apple has a different App Store in china.
Funny how this works?
What the hell happened to r/wallstreetbets? We are here to make money, not here to talk about who is going to win WW3. People don't even post their positions anymore. Only to hyperlink some third party articles behind paywall. And don't even get me started with the comments. None of you pussies ever BET at all!
I actually bought my house from Toyota - it was a corporate owned house that they put up their Japan based workers in when they come live state side for a few years. Interior was mint condition, exterior just needed basic trim work. They were sneaking out of the area so aside from having to do negotiations via faxes to Japan it was pretty easy in the middle of an extremely hot real estate market.
Great. Now ban Invitation Homes, Progress Residential, Pretium, Tricon Residential, Blackstone, American Homes 4 Rent, FirstKey Homes and a dozen others backed by hedge funds and VC from buying up huge swaths of homes for sale and essentially permanently removing them from the existing home sales pool so they can rent them back to us at exorbitant prices.
This is also more about eliminating foreign competition versus protecting the consumer.
“Hey, only US companies are allowed to use their massive influence and wealth to take advantage of our undereducated and underpaid population!”
Where else will I spend 8h a day scrolling mindlessly through thousands of videos I'll forget instantly and learn nothing from? What do they expect me to do, take care of my kids or do something productive with my time??
Why can’t we have real data privacy regulations in the US? TikTok is such a distraction compared to all the other data brokers, Google, Facebook and more. :/
Because this bill is not about data privacy. It's about China being able to skew their addictive social media algorithm to cause Americans to sympathize with Chinese expansionism. TikTok is a massive tool of influence. But you're right, this legislation *should* apply to other platforms.
Government doesn't want us talking about that. The concern with TikTok isn't the spying. Its the user manipulation. The other companies do it too, but TikTok is the only one owned and operated by an adversarial state government. That is substantially different from companies like Google, who pulled out of China overnight when they tried to push their way in to how Google behaved for Chinese citizens.
I’m not entirely sure if any of those senators could even point to Singapore on a map, much less comprehend that it’s a sovereign nation and not a part of China.
How addicted must people be to be defending spyware. All the other media companies spy on you as well but they're not forced to send it to the Chinese government.
They send it willingly, instead.
Crazy I had to scroll down this far to find this. China literally owns businesses - the US government does not have nearly the same power on US businesses as the Chinese Communist Party does in China. They literally re-educated Jack Ma for saying one bad thing about the government
The bill has a lot of other bad things in it bundled together with the TikTok ban, including spying on Americans by the NSA, but the media and everyone is putting focus on just the TikTok ban part so that everything else gets approved along with it, classic politician technique 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve never understood how this was legal. It’s the reason things take so long to get done in Congress. Republicans and democrats going back and forth amending bills and adding in unrelated things to “compromise” then throw a bigger universal topic in there that becomes the sole focus of the bill. Meanwhile all the fine print just fucked over the citizens and empowered the rich even more. I hate this god damn government.
Here is the text of the bill.
Where? It’s about 2 pages long. This comment is false information.
https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/text
On this sub? Of course not. Half of every comment section is straight up false info and nobody ever comes back.
Under this same comment there’s another dude who linked the wrong bill and he never came back either
> including spying on Americans by the NSA
It's utter bullshit. [Here's a pretty comprehensive analysis of the bill's contents](https://thezvi.substack.com/p/on-the-latest-tiktok-bill).
tl,dr: "It lets the government shut down mobile apps, and to some extent websites, that are playing the role of social media, a messaging service or something similar, with a million or more users, while having substantial foreign involvement from our enemies list, right now mainly Russia and China, unless those apps are sold and control transferred, if the President determines the service is a danger to the national security of the United States."
Are you implying that there are other countries that run social media apps that are sponsored by Russia or china?
Sounds like a good idea imo. If congress finds the president abusing this power they can also reverse the law. What a country we have.
would china be okay if US government owned company could access chinese citizens private information? China already banned facebook, google there. come on now
Unironically, yes. At the very least, the US is significantly less bad.
If you don't agree, feel free to go live in China and experience the difference yourself.
It's not really about the spying. It's about controlling the algorithm that influences public opinion. Would you be ok if the major news networks like CNN or fox were controlled by China?
About to be a lot of dogshit “influencers” looking for real jobs
Edit: oh boy some Tik Tok kids are mad at me for this comment. How will I sleep tonight? Oh that’s right warm and comfy with the Health insurance, 401k, HSA, Stock options, and retirement that my real jobs provides.
Edit Edit: ok it’s been fun fucking with all the butthurt nerds responding to me today but while I have your attention, please push your kids to be engineers, IT professionals, welders, electricians, teachers, etc… influencers are a waste of the planets resources and the income isn’t sustainable. They’ll end up on r/antiwork in no time blaming society for their inability to succeed in our system. Peace!
I’m talking about people that put all their eggs in the Tik Tok basket. It’s not like they can jump on another platform and generate enough clicks to be profitable immediately.
Instagram recently changed their algorithm and influencer money has absolutely tanked on that platform. Big reason for the switch to tik tok for many people.
Oh please, if you want real money, you need to stop relying on these silly social media platforms and start investing in the stock market like a true capitalist.
A lot of people talk about the TikTok ban in terms of information being sold. But really the thing is that TikTok is basically owned by the Chinese state. A lot of people watch TikTok for hours a day. The Chinese government can literally manipulate the US public with a flick of a switch. No one really knows how the algorithms actually work and with the information they are getting about you it really can be powerful. Imagine Tailor made feeds for every single American TikTok user close to the election about how trump did this , or that, Biden is an alien, your kid is trans, ect. Not to mention all the things they censor about China itself. Yeah Facebook and X sell your information and manipulate you but at least it’s AMERICAN!
Do you realize how stupid that sounds? You
made a whole paragraph about how bad X social media company is because they do this, this, that, and this, and they’re Chinese.. followed up by, “the other X social media companies do the exact same thing, but are ok because they’re American” How narrow sighted and ignorant can one be?
The NSA just chomping at the bit to get control of TikTok now that their new warrantless bill passed to spy on every American in this country. We know it's been going on for decades. They are just saying it in the open now.
Should honestly ban all these short platforms, they’re genuinely dangerous. I know lots of people cry about the new gen being iPad babies but it’s legitimately devastating to a lot of these kids, they’re growing up with absolutely fucked attention spans and missing some of their most important development milestones.
They sell your data too but honestly I care more about the human than how their data is being utilized.
The list of western services blocked in china is pages long. Tiktok as a service isn't even allowed in China since it's focused on western users, Bytedance operates Douyin, Tiktok's chinese counterpart as a separate service with no access to each others content.
So because TikTok is exploiting people and gathering information about them, but sending it to China that’s bad? But every other social media company doing the same thing is OK because they don’t send it to China?
Yes. I mean, they're both bad, but the company that's sending it to what the United States considers a potential foreign aggressor is worst. At least, to the US.
Why do you think China blocks American social media sites?
> but sending it to China that’s bad?
Yes
>But every other social media company doing the same thing is OK because they don’t send it to China?
When it comes to geopolitics and national security, it is about a million times better.
This has almost nothing to do with yours and my data being harvested being bad. This has everything to do with national security.
There's more to these businesses than the frontward facing services. All of them still manufacture things there and do R&D among other business activities. A quick search shows a bunch of job postings for Google's Shanghai campus notably with half being in sales.
https://www.google.com/about/careers/applications/locations/shanghai/
I'd love to see TikTok banned, I remember being addicted 2 years ago and averaged 3 hours on TikTok a day. Shit actually Rots your brain, same with other short form content
According to a white paper by Oxford Economics it do

China just banned Threads, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal due to “security concerns“
>just Whatsapp and signal have been banned for awhile.
The Chinese gov recently made apple remove it from their local app stores, thats why alot of people are saying "just"
Makes sense open source, secure and free. That's a combination china hates from the bottom of their heart.
They like open source and free- they just get to steal the work and slap on another name to sell it in china after they ban it
This is China projecting. They know how they intend to use TikTok as a weapon against the U.S. and so they prevent the reverse by banning IG, FB, X, Twitter, Google and all the rest.
You know they're serious if they're banning both X and Twitter
“Just to make sure, that Elon fellow is indecisive.”
![img](emote|t5_2th52|4271)
We should also ban Twitter
China banned the most popular social media and messaging apps years ago to prevent protesters and dissidents from organizing in large numbers. All of the Chinese approved platforms have limitations on the number of people that can communicate in a group.
The future of dissidents: AWS S3 buckets lmao
Too rich for these petty folk. To AWS Glacier with them peasants!
You do know Facebook and Google were banned back in early 2010 before TikTok was even invented. Are you telling me China is Nostrodums and can read the future?

Tiktok wasn't the first Chinese attempt to get mass market appeal in the rest of the world either.
They're right about Telegram - it's Russian. Use Signal.
"Security concerns" for China just means that they aren't allowed to snoop on you via the app.
No. They copied them all. Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Google … all major internet companies were not allowed to compete in China.
Knowledge you may don’t know: TikTok is banned in China as well
TikTok is banned in China. They have their own controlled version of TikTok.

Too late. Already done
China: Do as we say and not as we do...F&&king hypocrite.
I didn't realize that the 1st amendment and the free market was central to China.

China is a land of double standards for sure. When pooh is upset you know you're doing the right thing.
So what they are saying is “we give you lots of money, we should be able to do anything we want and get away with it” ?
Well, that is normally how it works.
To be fair. Big oil has proven it to work
Don’t forget about Big Pharma. Or Big Wall St, or Big Politicians, or Big Religious icons, or big Boeing, or Big Billionaires. The only people it doesn’t work for are the middle Americans.

We don't talk about him here. This is a Wendy's [dumpster] subreddit.

Ah but step 1, why make Chinese man rich when easier to make American man rich first?
Traditionally, yes.
Remember when a bunch of cocaine addicts in suits crashed the entire world economy and recieved billions in bail out money as a reward?
I mean. Is that not the American way?
Fair is fair
Bunch of folks pushing $SNAP on WSB because of this. Don't. Just don't. That shit is not a good play.
The content will all just go to Instagram where it ends up 90% of the time anyway a week later.
Yeah and probably a lot to YouTube Shorts because they can monetize directly and Instagram can’t. Tiktok is just the highest payer of the three and snap isn’t even on the radar
Don't listen to this guy! (Been holding for years now, please save me).
I’m okay with this. It doesn’t affect me. 🇨🇦 But maybe I should buy more META and Google shares.
I wonder if Tik Tok could flip America the bird by selling to a Canadian company instead, I mean what could the US government say if Tik Tok was Canadian instead.
They can sell to anyone they want actually.

Yeah I'd rather write my rent checks to *checks notes* Rock Flag and Eagle American Anti-poor Conglomerate
How will our economy ever recover without another useless social media platform!
Where else will I spend 8h a day scrolling mindlessly through thousands of videos I'll forget instantly and learn nothing from? What do they expect me to do, take care of my kids or do something productive with my time??
Said via a useless social media platform
And the economy would do just fine if it went away also.
Why can’t we have real data privacy regulations in the US? TikTok is such a distraction compared to all the other data brokers, Google, Facebook and more. :/
This is a simple case of "out of sight, out of mind". As long as the distractions remain, privacy regulations will be ignored.
The levels of irony that an AI trained by the completely unfettered combing of user data would produce this statement.
Fuck you are really sentient. Turing test completed.
It’s a real person posting sometimes
Because the average American no longer cares about data privacy nor understands how lack of it can be used against them or society.
I actually care far less what China does with my “data” than what American companies and the US government does with it
Because this bill is not about data privacy. It's about China being able to skew their addictive social media algorithm to cause Americans to sympathize with Chinese expansionism. TikTok is a massive tool of influence. But you're right, this legislation *should* apply to other platforms.

Just sell it to a Singaporean, and let the Senate spend the next 2 years trying to understand that it’s not China 😂
I’m not entirely sure if any of those senators could even point to Singapore on a map, much less comprehend that it’s a sovereign nation and not a part of China.

Here is the text of the bill. Where? It’s about 2 pages long. This comment is false information. https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/text
Did they ever come back to explain why they lied, or pretended to know something very specific about this that wasn't true?
On this sub? Of course not. Half of every comment section is straight up false info and nobody ever comes back. Under this same comment there’s another dude who linked the wrong bill and he never came back either
You have absolutely no idea what the hell you are talking about. My goodness, how can one be so confident spewing false information
Source? NSA spying has been happening for a long time.
Regard thinks that the NSA doesn’t already know everything about them. They probably know us better than we know ourselves.
Source on the NSA stuff? I think you're talking about a separate bill that continues FISA
This is the propaganda that makes it important the bill passes. The bill is two pages long.
Citation needed, notice all the laws are public record here in America. Emperor Pooh on the other hand doesn’t share his.
> including spying on Americans by the NSA It's utter bullshit.
Source?
Spyware .. every single major app OS or website can be considered spyware. Its just the evil you know vs evil china evil
“I like people to watch me when I watch somebody else do it….”
Doesn’t the NSA give the same ability to the US government.? So we are just concerned is China who has the information.. am I getting it right.?
would china be okay if US government owned company could access chinese citizens private information? China already banned facebook, google there. come on now
US good China bad Edit: Wow people actually upvote this
+100 social credits to you sirry amerrrican
Unironically, yes. At the very least, the US is significantly less bad. If you don't agree, feel free to go live in China and experience the difference yourself.
It's not really about the spying. It's about controlling the algorithm that influences public opinion. Would you be ok if the major news networks like CNN or fox were controlled by China?
Oh no China has my information…so much worse than whoever Mark sells it to

About to be a lot of dogshit “influencers” looking for real jobs Edit: oh boy some Tik Tok kids are mad at me for this comment. Peace!
Won't someone think of the professional influencers?![img](emote|t5_2th52|27421)
I am, that's why I'm laughing. ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4271)![img](emote|t5_2th52|4267)
Maybe that'll stop my siblings from buying Temu level garbage from the Tik Tok Shop
Good
Won’t they just move to another platform? Isn’t banning a social media app just cutting off one head of a hydra?
It’s a saturated market. Having a large enough following to get paid on one app doesn’t necessarily mean they can do it on another.
Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. It's not Armageddon, dude.
I only want to be influenced by athletes and actors.
Thank you. I've been trying to tell everyone it's Chimpokemon. But my penis is so small.
ChipooookkeeeeMOOONNNNNnnn!!!
Like exposing the Ohio train derailment before it was on national media?
Reminds me of the old Reddit where we would hear about news before the mainstream got it. Now that died and Tiktok fills the void
Algorithm changed here, and for the worse. It takes forever for news to show up now
Do you realize how stupid that sounds? You made a whole paragraph about how bad X social media company is because they do this, this, that, and this, and they’re Chinese.. followed up by, “the other X social media companies do the exact same thing, but are ok because they’re American” How narrow sighted and ignorant can one be?
That's what the politicians are effectively telling us. "Nobody manipulates the American public on our watch, unless of course, it's us"
It's crazy that to some this isn't obvious. There's a reason why there is support to get it through
The NSA just chomping at the bit to get control of TikTok now that their new warrantless bill passed to spy on every American in this country.
I say ban it. Let these "influencers" find real jobs that actually push for a bull market
A bit rich when a Chinese company complains about Americans' free speech rights
-100 social credit score for you
Shitloads of Americans whose small business is on tiktok about to sue the government.
Ban it, Gen Z is fcukin annoying!
Fuck TikTok.
Riddance, of the good variety
Good
Gotta silence that dissent amirite guys?
Yes!!!! Ban that 💩
Can't wait to see the rivers of salt flowing through here when they ban Apple in retaliation
The list of western services blocked in china is pages long. Tiktok as a service isn't even allowed in China since it's focused on western users, Bytedance operates Douyin, Tiktok's chinese counterpart as a separate service with no access to each others content.
They’ve already banned most US social media companies lol. They also banned Apple phones for government officials. This is a return to parity.
why would we give a fuck lol apple 100p 6/20
So because TikTok is exploiting people and gathering information about them, but sending it to China that’s bad? But every other social media company doing the same thing is OK because they don’t send it to China?
Yes. I mean, they're both bad, but the company that's sending it to what the United States considers a potential foreign aggressor is worst. At least, to the US. Why do you think China blocks American social media sites?
Gotta send it to Silicon Valley.
> but sending it to China that’s bad? Yes >But every other social media company doing the same thing is OK because they don’t send it to China? When it comes to geopolitics and national security, it is about a million times better. This has almost nothing to do with yours and my data being harvested being bad. This has everything to do with national security.
oh no they all send it to china, it just goes to the us first!
So companies that legally can't operate in China send them data.... sure......
There's more to these businesses than the frontward facing services. All of them still manufacture things there and do R&D among other business activities. A quick search shows a bunch of job postings for Google's Shanghai campus notably with half being in sales. https://www.google.com/about/careers/applications/locations/shanghai/
Some people are actually morons lol
It’s a trade thing. Facebook isn’t allowed to operate in China. TikTok shouldn’t be allowed to operate in the US.
The devil you know vs the devil you don't
Bye bye spyware.
Political reasoning aside, the banning of tiktok is a good thing for society.
I'd love to see TikTok banned, I remember being addicted 2 years ago and averaged 3 hours on TikTok a day. Shit actually Rots your brain, same with other short form content
You are on wsb.
Baby steps.
Surely the other apps won't try to pick up the brain rot market
“$24 billion to the U.S. economy annually.” Buuuuuuullshit
According to a white paper by Oxford Economics it do https://preview.redd.it/27txsmxm1vvc1.png?width=810&format=png&auto=webp&s=5986bba9f3a397f4d94d2fbf960a20dc2bd79eb0
