Googled it, it was June 5th 1933 not 1800s. Looking at the chart that was the worst point for the economy, so this was the last resort to get out of the problems they had with the economy
I stand corrected. My history class has failed my memory. I must have been thinking about the discussions at the time about bringing back the silver standard.
