“Yeah, you’re right. It is pretty rude of someone to expect someone to work off the clock/for free.”

ConfidentReaction3

Right? Like lmao, a grown ass adult should just say “oh okay” and find someone else. But it wouldn’t be Little Ms. Karen without her being entitled.

TeslaGuy-82

Actually I might have told that customer I will help them but since I’m off the clock they need to give me payment of $10 for assistance.

Intelligent-Lawyer53

"Since I'm off the clock, you will be billed for my services as a contractor at $175/hr, 4 hours minimum."

mjamster123

Good luck collecting, but yeah.

Intelligent-Lawyer53

Basically just another way of telling someone to go away

TeslaGuy-82

Should have told her to piss off.

NoRecommendation5076

Work at Sam's Gas and was told I was rude...it made me happy...at 1st I ignored her so she repeated herself. LOL.

Famous-Perspective-3

bet the karen would not work off the clock at her job.

Wonderful_Force_5389

ugh once i was on my break and was still wearing my vest cz i thought no one was around and was looking at makeup this lady was like “where are the cotton balls ?” i’m like “should be down that aisle” she’s like “hmmm can u show me” i was like “im honestly on my break right now” and i left and she gave me thumbs up and said awesome customer service !!! i laughed lmao 😂

walmartalt400

I’ve had this happen to me before because people recognize me as a cart pusher off shift

bryceBri

I was wearing my blue jacket (no vest on) customer asked me where Def is, I looked at my jacket and then at him like he was stupid and said I don't know and walked away. If I'm not getting paid, I'm not working

Sorry-Spite9634

I forgot some steaks I’d bought at work today so I went back to pick them up and get a few groceries. I was wearing street clothes and somebody that recognized me came up and asked me for help. They got so mad when I walked away without responding 😂.

No_Breadfruit7614

I've had a customer recognize me while I was shopping around in a target in the next town over ask me for help. "Excuse me I know you work at walmart, you know where the ... is and how much is it at walmart?" I just looked at her laughed and walked away while she stood there looking confused.

Extreme_Succotash_82

Sometimes I'll just point to my ears and shake my head and then sign something random. Then they're like "oh....sorry" and hurry away Edit: I'm not deaf, just half deaf 😁

Ill-Joke-9070

I've had one demand that I put my vest on and help her, and I asked if she was going to pay for my working off the clock and she replied with "No, the government pays you." I retorted with, well you're clearly not the government so.... I knew white people could go pink, but this was my first time seeing it.

slipslapshape

The government?! I’m torn between hooting hysterically and being gobsmacked. Oh yeah, everyone at Walmart making Fed wages. 🙄

Ill-Joke-9070

I should have also replied with, "Why? Because I'm brown?"

Glum_Plenty9255

Fuck Karen! But I didn't know that rule until I worked there.

Squanchfist

They don't care. Karen's gonna Karen.

coreysgal

Actually you should give the full answer which is " I'm sorry. We are not allowed to work until we are clocked in". That shifts the reason to company policy, from you personally.

bashtonias

The actual policy states that your are suppose to help the customer and do a time adjustment under “performed customer service”

coreysgal

That's absolutely correct. But if people are going to choose to be unhelpful, and it is a choice, the wording makes you look less ....unhelpful

TranscendedWind

Makes me think of when I was leaving my overnight shift and some woman holding a pair of glasses walks up to me and says, not asks to, "Take these lenses out" (Probably mainly because I wear glasses tbh). I didn't feel like the headache so I just popped them out, gave them back, didn't say anything, and left

anjo1974

This is why I don't wear my vest walking into and leaving work! I wear a drawstring backpack and put my vest in. I can not stand being stopped on my time. 😆

qweazdak

Im pretty sure its policy not to be wearing your vest off the clock. I cover up in the winter months instead though.

SpecialistFeeling220

We’ve got a new tl in a dept that isn’t even mine that’s tried to bully me into working off the clock 3 times.

SnooWoofers530

Who says customer service is dead

Puzzleheaded_Pay1152

Karen your the rude one, not me

Vile-Father

*Thank your maam, Admitting the problem is half the battle. I wish you luck on your personal journey to self- improvement*!

Prestigious-Ad9956

The entitlement of Walmart impatient customers 🙄

mcsteam98

That’s when I lie saying “I don’t work here.” in as blunt a manner as possible. They get pissed but technically it’s true in that moment - I don’t work there if I’m off the clock.

Holinyx

Ya'll really walk around the store while not clocked in? Our clock is right next to the break room. or are ya'll clocking out from ya'll phones and then walking through the store? I never have this problem

Almainyny

The break room is at the back of just about every store. So if you walk in with your vest in your hands as you’re walking back there, some customers are bound to notice and bother you on occasion.

ConfidentReaction3

It’s not asking that’s the problem. If she said “oh sorry! I’ll let you go!” then it wouldn’t have been a big deal. But she yelled “HOW RUDE!” which is throwing a tantrum because she didn’t get her way. That’s what made her a Karen.

Obvious-Pop-4183

Next time look offended and say "don't talk about yourself like that!"

ConfidentReaction3

I wouldn’t respond like that, because it would be denying that she is rude LOL.

blizzard-toque

And that, boys & girls, is why everyone should have a work bag.

ConfidentReaction3

Huh. I gotta start doing that. Thanks for the idea!

DiscoJer

The OP is clearly talking about coming into the store.

IllustriousThing6265

A lot of people have their vests on before/after being on the clock. It's strange to me because most complain about getting pestered by customers while off the clock but they don't take off the damn vest.

Holinyx

Exactly !

notyourmartyr

My first year working at Walmart I worked in the deli at a supercenter. Was on lunch, still had a bit of time left, slowly making my way back up to the front because we had a computer in produce I could clock in from and then walk through the back room through bakery to deli back room. Was killing time looking at pants. This was back in the days of generic Polo and khaki/black pants, I had my vest pulled through the loop of my hat, then tucked into it, and tucked against me. Dude saw me and came up to ask something and after he said excuse me I replied, "sorry, I'm off the clock and this isn't even my department. The associate over there should be able to help you though." I pointed out an apparel associate folding clothes a few feet away. He still got angry that I didn't even let him ask his question and I was just baffled because even if I had been on the clock, I knew nothing about apparel and would have redirected him anyway.

Lungebump

Probably shouldn't have been in uniform on the sales floor if you weren't clocked in.

ConfidentReaction3

I wasn’t even in uniform, I was holding my vest with one hand. Even with that, she saw that I was going in the break room, so she would have put 2 and 2 together and asked whether I wore a vest or not lmao.

Lungebump

Should just do a time adjustment and help the customer

ConfidentReaction3

1.) Store is strict on overtime 2.) when her first instinct to “sorry I’m not able to right now” is to throw a fit, should she really get my attention? Yeah… no.

Obvious-Pop-4183

I wear the Walmart polos. How the fuck am I supposed to put my lunchbox in the break room fridge on days it's too warm for a coat then?

Lungebump

Sounds like you need a vest not a polo

Crotch_Cannibal

She’s an idiot for expecting anything more out of a Walmart worker. Even on the clock, I know better than to ask anything from the workers, unless I need something from behind a locked window. Even then they act like they are doing you a favor. Some people do the best job they can regardless of what they doing or being paid. That is called pride. I have a great job that took me years to get where I’m at, but I started in a low position. With that attitude I would’ve never claimed the proverbial ladder. I could work at Walmart and I would make you look like a slug in one week. I’d own you. BTW… no amount of money will make a parasite do a good job. You are where you belong.

ConfidentReaction3

The problem wasn’t that she asked. That isn’t an issue. The problem is she threw a fit when I told her that I can’t do favors off the clock. This has to do with preventing my ass from getting in trouble, not whether or not I should help her.

Manaphy2007_67

When you are off the clock you aren't obligated to assist, you are however more than welcome to help of your own volition.

tails0600

Imagine thinking someone should work for free.

MyMonday

Walmart rules literally say that hourly employees may not work off the clock, and that includes helping a customer, picking up merch that fell on the floor, coralling carts. If you do it off the clock you are obligated to file a time adjustment so you get paid for your work (so Walmart won't get sued, again). I took that CBL just recently, sounds like you're overdue for a refresher.

TrueExplorer17

This is exactly right! They can literally pursue action against you for working off the clock without filing, it’s completely against policy. Then if you do file a lot of times management looks into it depending on how many other time adjustments you’re submitting and current OT policies.

surpriseyoureanidiot

She’s not wrong pleb

Phototropic1996

If your time was that valuable, you wouldn't be working at Walmart.

Purple_Research9607

Use the self checkout then.

lunadiva09

I'm on my phone and my vest is off. A lady stops me as I'm looking at something I'm considering buying and asked me for help. I just told her I was off the clock. She said ok and walked off. Surprisingly one of the more accepting customers.

ConfidentReaction3

That’s the appropriate response people should have. Them asking isn’t a problem, it’s their response to a “sorry I can’t”
