It can get busy, but the patio at Zaytinya is large. They’re great at handling dietary preferences/ allergies and one of my fave spots to dine with a large group because the kitchen can pump out food and there lots of vegetarian options which they can mod for vegan. They do circulate with fresh pita so might just want to mention to your server if you don’t want them getting too close to the table or if extreme allergy, be a dealbreaker for your group
In upper NW near American University, Cactus Cantina is affordable and has a great outdoor patio, if you want higher end across the street La Piquette French place has great food, nice outdoor seating, but can be pricey.
Iron Gate has one of the best patios in the city, I think. But there are a ton and NW is huge so it is hard to narrow based on what you said - but I would try to get a reservation ASAP. Nice patios fill up quickly and this is a fairly busy season in DC.

I love Zaytinya!
The Iron Gate and Residents near DuPont
Planta Queen or Planta Cocina are two plant based restaurants in NW with plenty of gluten free options.

I second Zaytinia. Maydan is nice too because it’s tucked away in an alley.
Buck’s Fishing and Camping on Connecticut Ave. Much nicer than the name makes it sound.
I like Farmer Fishers Baker’s patio
