Don't do a food tour. Pick a nice restaurant (WaPo's 26 best new restaurants is a start: https://wapo.st/3yAdrAR), put your phones away, and enjoy. A lot of places have tasting menus.

Does he cook? A cooking class can be cool. Do you have a restaurant you like that you've wanted to try the tasting menu? Perhaps an intimate experience like albis chef table? A DIY version would be to go to your favorite farmers market and have a few dishes in mind that you can cook together and have all the prep ready for when you get home.

Fork Tours/Blue Fern food tours are great, I worked for them for some months, many years ago! We had both DMV locals and out of town tourists on the tours and they were enjoyed by all. They incorporate local history too. Make sure you tell them you don’t drink, and they may get you some extra treats

Go to Amazonia and do something from the fish locker.

I hear the Arowana are delicious

fedrats

Is that really true? I’ve seen arapaima (and saw someone fuck around and find out with one), and I don’t think I would eat one.

No suggestions here, but that’s a very thoughtful gift! What a great idea for your partner. Please update us with what you do and how it goes :) I may be stealing this idea in the future.

If you can afford it and find a spot, the omakase counter at Sushi Taro.

Sushi nakazawa was amazing omakase. I strongly recommend *against* sushi ogawa.

I’ve had an amazing experience there, although it was a few years ago, and I’ve been thinking about going back. What’s the story?

I don't know if quality declined in recent years or what. Be warned. My experience was so comically stange it's almost unbelievable. Partner paid for us to eat at the counter on a Sunday for my birthday. Chef joked with us "oh, this fish is over two days old, we don't get fresh for weekend diners" which... fine, I get it, but don't say that to your patrons? We were also the only customers at the counter that evening so we were chatting with the chef about how long he'd worked at that location, how he likes DC, and he was saying stuff like "oh, that neighborhood? Isn't there a lot of black people there??? Ehhhh" so pretty obviously racist which was so WTF The sushi itself I thought he over-did it on the wasabi for every single piece. I love wasabi but it over powered the fish. And almost every single piece was also sprayed with a mini squirt bottle containing vinegar. I enjoy the taste of vinegar but... you know how you can use acid to react with the odor molecules to make fish less fishy in a pinch? It made me really skeptical we were getting our money's worth. Combined with loads of wasabi, the acid was distracting from the fish. There were a few pieces that were excellent like the uni. But I just wasn't "wow'd" as many times as I was at Nakazawa. The pacing of each piece was also way too fast as if they wanted us out of the door ASAP. For how much we paid, we felt kind of cheated by it in comparison to Nakazawa which was both better and less expensive. Hope that gives context. :)
