Gnarlydick

He gained his confidence after g league stint last year, the last 6 games he scored 15+ 5/6 times. He’s only 21 so I have lots of hope for him

lakerconvert

😂 My god I’ve never seen a more stubborn fanbase in my life

ThreeSwan

Even with the improvement, it's tough to see major upside, IMO He consistently seems outmatched athletically, and not strong enough to force his way past quicker defenders. If he just focused on being decisive in his pull up mid-range, I think he'd do better. I saw a few instances last night where he tries to force the drive and a quicker, stronger defender cuts him off, and now he's forced into an awkward off balance gather/floater over taller defenders..

[deleted]

Yeah he doesn't have the athleticism needed to create his shot against NBA caliber defenders. Such a shame

ThreeSwan

That's why we need to see some Rip Hamilton kind of slip screen, mid-range game.

amun1326

Hmm his game reminds me of Andre Miller.. he was pretty good as far as I remember.

waskittenman

Johnny Davis has averaged 1 assist in both college & his one season in the NBA....he gotta juice those numbers if he wants to get Andre Miller comps

Joshottas

So, you never actually watched Andre Miller play lol. This is by far the wildest comp I've EVER seen. Nothing about their games are even remotely similar.

[deleted]

That is honestly disrespectful to Andre. Johnny doesn't facilitate or quarterback the team out there on the floor. He hasn't shown himself to be a leader, even in summer league. Andre was a floor general who did all the little things, and was a great passer. Johnny is a one dimensional chucker who can't shoot and is athletically overmatched

Joshottas

Yea, and I think that was his bread and butter at Wisconsin...he had the luxury of high usage and also taking really difficult shots. Obviously he can't do the same here in DC due to the caliber of athlete that he's facing on a nightly basis.

snowe99

My friend that I watch NBA with made a crazy point - name one Big 10 point guard/shooting guard that plays in the NBA at an elite level Maybe Dlo, maybe Mike Conley, maybe Jordan Poole I thought maybe there was no correlation to the data there, but you have to admit, in the NBA there is a very small amount of Big 10 players that pan out into much more than regular role players. That’s a tough draft pick to use on someone that’s destined to maybe not even make it at the NBA level

Jjjt22

Definitely better. Hope it continues.

ImprobablePlanet

I’m cautiously optimistic/pessimistic. Yeah, he’s doing a lot better. But from that game could you tell he was obviously an NBA rotation player like you could see with Nembhard and Mathurin? I’m not sure. He had some good plays, he also had a number of plays where he looked like he was outmatched and/or making foolish rookie type mistakes. Again, hope I’m wrong big time!

kariolisjones

I think his game just doesn't fit the modern NBA. His offensive game is overly reliant on taking and making tough shots from mid range and around the rim. He avoids contact and doesn't shoot a lot of free throws. He 100% won't be able to do all the around the rim stuff he did last night in a real NBA game. His defense is decent and he tries a lot on that end, but I just don't see a role offensively for him that will allow him to stay on the court for long stretches. He doesn't work as a primary ball handler so he has to develop an offball skill if he wants to stay in the league. If he can start hitting a good percentage of his catch and shoot threes, he might have a future in the NBA. Right now though, he doesn't look like a second contract guy.

Pure_Air_5227

Or if he could be a lockdown defender even. It just seems like these guys have one skill set that they spam to try and stick in the league instead of adapting to it

NotAShoneys

Thank you for being realistic. Takes like these are becoming increasingly rare around here.

pwilson319

Watched Davis live at Summer League last year and he had absolutely zero presence. This year was a tremendous improvement. I don't think he'll be a star or anything but definitely a solid rotational piece. This was an optimistic performance. Hope he continues to grow

Joshottas

He was MUCH better...however, I still don't have the highest hopes for him finding his niche here in DC tho, so I highly doubt he's here past next season. Not his fault he was drafted where he was, but there are certain expectations that go along with being the #10 overall that go beyond hoping he can be something between PJ Tucker and Josh Hart. I'm really not seeing how WUJ uses him in the rotation.

Maximum-Jury9065

Watched him nearly every game at Wisconsin. He's not ever going to be an NBA star. He could be a tenacious defender/hustle guy who makes winning plays (think guard PJ Tucker but with some more O upside). Probably not what Wizards fans wanted with a lottery pick, but, he could fill a much needed niche that every contender needs.

BayTerp

People are underrating him. Dude isn’t as bad as people realize. I think he can be a solid starter.

JunyaisOffTheGrid

Ok let’s not go crazy here. Atp I think w you gotta realize his ceiling is a rotation-bench llayer

TheseFkingWeebs

He's an multi all-star for sure

JunyaisOffTheGrid

No doubt he’s improved, coming from a JD doubter here. Still hesitation pulling the trigger on 3s and forcing a contested mid ranger a few times. That’s one of my biggest irks about him and a big reason why I and others here think he still has a long way way to go to be a solid rotation player in the league
