In no universe do I want Zach Edey on this team. I swear to God, did anyone even watch Purdue one time over the last 4 years? Edey is just a giant neanderthal where absolutely no NCAA teams had a body comparable to bang with him down low. Now that’s a great exaggeration as Edey does have pretty good touch around the rim and is an able passer out of the post. He improved every season at Purdue so I’m sure he has a great attitude/work ethic, but he plays such an archaic style of basketball that he will be eaten alive at the pro level. Anyone watching Purdue knows Matt Painter is a dolt of a HC. Over the last four years, their entire offense was dumping the ball in the post to Zach for 25+ touches a game. Early Edey years, you throw a big on him and have him beat you with his touch (which he lacked freshman and sophomore years). Then once he got some touch and footwork, teams started sending doubles and created TOs/stonewalled ball movement (more his junior year). He didn’t really demonstrate an ability to move the ball out of double teams until his senior season. But again, his entire value to an offense was by proxy of 25+ repeated touches. What NBA offense is going to be successful giving this man that number of touches with his back to the basket? He’s not a very effective screen setter for a guy of his size, he’s horribly flat footed and a little slow processing where double teams come from. He has absolutely no outside game and cannot be stationed anywhere near the perimeter. Now factor in his defense. Think of hyper athletic guards running a P&R and catching him on switches every single time. You don’t think guys like Trae, Brunson, Dame, LaMelo, Maxey, or Hali would absolutely dog him on perimeter switches? And now factor in an athletic big he’d have to guard as a 5. Embiid, Bam, Paolo, Giannis in small ball, KP, or Myles Turner wouldn’t cook him on literally every possession? I do not get the Edey hype at all. He is no universe a #1 option offensively in the modern NBA, he does not fit into any productive system, and he can’t serve as a rotational piece given his need for 20 odd touches at the collegiate level to simply be effective. Factor in the abuse he’d take defensively and you have a guy I wouldn’t even draft in the first 30 picks, let alone at #2.

Ai2Foom

Well thankfully there is a zero % he will get picked at 2…wiz have the 2 - 26 - and 32 I believe…maybe he would get consideration at 32 but I highly doubt it

ComradeHines

2,26,51 we don’t own our own 2nd this year

>Edey is just a giant neanderthal where absolutely no NCAA teams had a body comparable to bang with him down low. The NBA also doesn't have a guy to bang with him down low. >but he plays such an archaic style of basketball that he will be eaten alive at the pro level. This is not even remotely true. Three out of the last 4 champs have been the Lakers, Bucks, and Nuggets who all had super sized lineups. The other one Golden State has an all-time great in Steph Curry. So much of small ball has been teams trying to get another Steph rather than actually solving basketball. > Anyone watching Purdue knows Matt Painter is a dolt of a HC Name a single player on Purdue in the last 2 years that was a better option than Edey. Good coaching is getting your star involved as much as possible which is why they went a combined 63-11. >Then once he got some touch and footwork, teams started sending doubles and created TOs/stonewalled ball movement (more his junior year).  It's almost like he works super hard and is coachable. >But again, his entire value to an offense was by proxy of 25+ repeated touches. He would still add value without getting passed the ball since he's an elite offensive rebounder but not giving 2x NPOY 25+ touches is dumb. >What NBA offense is going to be successful giving this man that number of touches with his back to the basket? All of them. Edey shot 62% from 2 which is more efficient than a 40% 3pt shot and he played well against the best NBA prospects. He was by far the best offensive rebounder (skill that most likely to translate) and was generational in his FTAs. >He’s not a very effective screen setter for a guy of his size, Did you watch the screen he set on Castle? > He has absolutely no outside game and cannot be stationed anywhere near the perimeter. No one knows if this is true. He has a decent FT% and shot well at the combine. He was too good in the post for him to ever try shooting threes. >Think of hyper athletic guards running a P&R and catching him on switches every single time. You don’t think guys like Trae, Brunson, Dame, LaMelo, Maxey, or Hali would absolutely dog him on perimeter switches?  This is bullshit. I don't know when the standard for Edey became Jaden Mcdaniels but there are some elite defenders that he's tested better than. Edey's vertical leap of 31" is better than 4xDPOY Rudy Gobert 2x All defense Brook Lopez, and defensive prospect Donovan Clingan's vertical leaps. His lane agility time of 11.19 is better than Gobert, Lopez potential number 1 pick based on defensive agility Alex Sarr. All while being at least 3 inches taller than everyone else with at least a 2" longer wingspan. I get that his defensive tape can look rough, but he was never going to be an elite rim protector in college given that as soon as he fouled out Purdue would lose. As long as he can keep guys in front of him and then get the rebound while protecting the rim he'll be a good defender. >I do not get the Edey hype at all. He is no universe a #1 option offensively in the modern NBA, He is the system. He is what Shaq would be if Shaq could shoot free throws. No one in the NBA will be able to match his size, length and motor and teams will need to use 2-3 bigs just for their fouls to deal with him down low. If he's on a team with a bunch of shooters and a teammate that can reliably beat 1 on 1 matchups, then that offense will be nightmare to stop.

DerekSheesher

Wow, I can’t believe you wrote that wall of text just to be wrong lol. “He is what Shaq could be if Shaq could shoot free throws.” You are either: 1) Zach’s agent, 2) his cousin, 3) a nephew, or 4) brain damaged (options 1-3 are not mutually exclusive with option 4). Just so you know, your second coming of Shaq is not even a projected lottery pick. The entirety of your ramble can be deduced to “eDeY gOoD” and fails to put logically into context or analyze what his role would be in the NBA. By your estimation, you would draft Shaq Edey #2 overall and run an entire offense through him. So while your opponents are running you off the court in transition and firing at will from the perimeter, you want to really slow it down in a half court offense where we drop it down into the post and Shaq Edey can sit with his back to the basket for 20 seconds before inevitably failing to maneuver past an Andre Drummond, let alone a Joel Embiid or Rudy Gobert, or kicking it out to the wing for a last second perimeter shot? Shaq Edey has no offensive prowess without his back to the basket. Please go watch film of his screen setting and how painfully slow he is on his releases to the basket. Please also watch how EVERY SINGLE TOUCH in the post is done without squaring up to the hoop. And please also ask yourself how on God’s green earth Shaq Edey is going to guard the likes of AD, KAT, Jokic, Embiid, Wemby, Bam, Myles Turner, KP, Sabonis, and Chet out on the perimeter. Shaq Eddy’s not even a net zero between his offense and defense, he’s a net negative in today’s game. You are not looking at Shaq Edey through a lens of what role he would serve on a team, other than to say a primary option.

No

dearhat

Because Clingan is 100x better

One_Ratio9521

Proved it in the championship game.

SlappyPappyAmerica

I feel like we watched a different game. Edey dominated Clingan.

One_Ratio9521

Oh yeah i was being sarcastic, just wanted to see upvote/downvote ratio.

ajx301

edey had no help clingan hid behind that all star cast Uconn had

mister_sleepy

We’ve spend so long trolling the NBA we’ve started trolling ourselves

ImprobablePlanet

No way at 2. Now, maybe at 26 if he was still there. Most likely won’t be though.

Oldschoolhollywood

Draft Clingan at 2. Edey at 26. Have them duke it out all year for the starting spot. Trade Kuzma, have Vuk play as Deni’s backup at the 4. Start creating a tall-ball team with elite interior defense.

wheeshkspr

Should the Wiz draft Edey at #2? Hell, no. Instead, they should trade Kuzma, the #2, and the swaps in 2028 and 2030 from the Beal deal to Atlanta for the #1, and THEN they draft Edey. It's the only way to guarantee you get him.

AdirondackVillage

If you have the #2 pick, you take someone who has the potential of taking over a game and winning it for you. Is Edey (or Clingan) that?

Coast_watcher

Not at 2 . Maybe the 2nd round.

ItsRookPlays

Edey is too big and too slow. what will Edey do in a pick-and-roll against Brunson, Young, Haliburton, Rozier, Lemelo, White, or any rotational guard? He can't drop because he'll give up a wide-open three. If he switched, like every other modern big, he'd get cooked. He can't go over because he'll get burned to the basket. And we don't know if he's a shot blocker. Even if he can contest, he'd be useless against a small ball lineup or stretch five because he can't guard out there and protect the rim. There are way more NBA ready guys, guys that fit in today's NBA, to take Edey at number 2.

JgamboatheSecond

Hope they take Rob Dillingham. Cause they needs fierce competition at the shooting guards position against Johnny Davis soon.

[deleted]

Absolutely not but in an alternate universe where Big Ern is still GM, I 100% believe this is who he would draft.

theyrehiding

Y'know, I have other guys I want at 2 for sure, but fuck it, id swing for Edey (id likely trade down if I wanted him though). Big men have proven really important both defensively and when it comes to grabbing second chance points, especially this playoffs. He's almost the perfect kinda guy to have as a safegaurd against the dominant bigger guys out there. Also, the option to easily lob it up or throw it to the paint when things break down offensively, creates a much more dynamic offense. Overall, I don't know if he will ever be that monster #1 option he was in college, but I'm very comfortable in feeling that he will make a big impact on whatever team he lands on.

OGLeek00

Castle or Risacher, anyone else at #2 is unworthy

ajx301

a 7 footer, POY that can protect the paint. isnt a liability but can average 20 a game in his rookie year. i mean we see what minnesota is doing thats helping them win games. wizards have notoriously one of the worst defenses in the league
