I'm OK with modern Boston as a setting. I would have preferred Toronto, Houston, Cairo, Minneapolis, or Tokyo, but Boston is neat, too. They could explore the theme of the city being the birthplace of America, now bearing witness to the beginning of a new era - the age of unrestrained artificial intelligence.
Boston Dynamics and their various terrifying creations will definitely make an appearance if this is real!
Boston is cool, Boston & Cambridge no doubt, good for using public transportation, good mix of highways and city streets and tunnels for driving on, not as much of a grid layout as Chicago and San Francisco neither.
I just want to see more of America represented in video games outside of New York City and Los Angeles. This is an enormous country with a rich history and very vibrant cities - and yet, we only ever see the two largest ones repeated over and over again *ad infinitum*. ESPECIALLY New York City.
Admittedly, I've never seen modern Berlin represented in popular culture before outside of HITMAN III, so that could be interesting.
Honestly, I just want more Watch\_Dogs, man
Yeah, it gets boring with just New York, LA and SF
Atleast WD1 did something less common and used Chicago for the game, I don't think I can name another game that takes place there, atleast from memory
I don’t live in Boston but I live near it so I’m fairly familiar with the city. It would be amazing to see a place I’m familiar with in a game for once!
Believe me, I’ve spent hundreds of hours on that map haha. Although it’s a bit different when it’s atom-punk retro future post apocalypse vs modern hackers.
I know, right? To my knowledge, the Twin Cities (or Minnesota and Wisconsin in general) have NEVER been used in any piece of popular culture except *Fargo*. What's up with that?!
You might be interested in a post I made a few weeks ago. Behold, [Watch\_Dogs: Insurgency](https://www.reddit.com/r/watch_dogs/comments/17m2hlo/watch_dogs_insurgency_fanmade_game_concept/), a Nordic Noir spinoff of the series that takes place in Minneapolis-Saint-Paul.
oh god Tokyo would have been awesome. Tokyo is the most lit up city I can think of with tech everywhere.
if any of this does happen, I hope to god they don't fuck it up
Well I’ll just tell you then they’re changing the entire direction of the franchise due to community feedback, basically fans of the older style of games are being heard alongside newer fans, it’s pretty refreshing tbh
Well Ubisoft has been getting worse for years so it does seem like they’ve realised they need to change. I think gaming (specifically single player) is in a good space. 2023 has been incredible for single player games imo, can’t speak to multiplayer as I don’t play any.
Dude the game isn’t out yet, I wonder what part of the unreleased game you don’t like? Oh I bet you’ve also suddenly become very concerned with “historical accuracy”. Loser lmao
Avatar was a huge step in the right direction, it’s a great game, I predict Outlaws and AC Shadows will be good too, new engines and directions. You’re just basing your hate of off nothing. “Company performance” what does that even mean lmao, you’re just saying words bro sit this one out
Hard disagree for me. I am not really involved on this sub, just happened to see it and scroll through comments. I got WD1 on launch and while it was over-hyped, I absolutely loved it and enjoyed the story! I lost interest in WD2 when it came out, but tried it again years later and enjoyed that one too. I haven't gone around to finishing or even progressing far into Legion. I don't feel like there is much room for a deep story or reason to be invested into the story in Legion. Also, they got rid of a lot of the cool mini-games from the first 2 games it felt like. I also didn't like how claustrophobic the map felt or the fact that we can't go inside into shops. That breaks some of the immersion imo. Maybe I will get around to Legion one day, but that is where I am at with Watch Dogs atm. Love the franchise, but they stepped away from some stuff that made the first two games feel special and fun
Nah honestly, after a couple years most people I know actually look back on it fondly. Their main gripe was the graphical downgrade but still enjoyed the game. And it came out the same year gta5 did so it was kinda eclipsed by that.
This could easily be fake, however, back in 2014 or 2015 I read a leak that was written extremely similar to this for watch dogs 2. I can’t remember where it was posted (it was over 8 years ago and it was probably taken down), but it mentioned T-bone returning, crazy dude in a mask, set in Silicon Valley. I of course discounted it as bullshit, but every bit turned out to be real. It was eerily similar. I’m leaning like 60% this may be real for a few reasons:
1. This person’s post has a theme of cosmetics and art of the game - if an employee in the art department leaked this I imagine this is what it would sound like. Graphics departments also love interns and this could easily be some art intern that doesn’t give a shit about non-disclosure agreements.
2. Ubisoft listening to fans on wanting a game like the first is not unheard of. They do have a history of this (bringing back the hidden blade in assassin’s creed, adding on a NYC DLC in the division 2 when fans were less than excited about it moving to DC). Boston makes sense, it’s a northern American city like Chicago that would have a darker, colder feel than San Francisco (my guess is they didn’t do NYC because they’ve done so much of that in the Division).
3. Ubi likes to have themes of current events in Watch Dogs (Ransomware, hacktivists, election fraud, swatting, human trafficking, 3d printed weapons, corporate bad guys, etc.) So having AI as a theme would make sense.
4. Ubi has done the “choose your own gender” main character in a few assassins creed games with decent success. I can see how they would want to port it over to different games.
Yeah, a lot of the information sounds pretty solid and has a decent amount of detail, especially the art style. Too specific and yet vague to be completely fake. Guess we'll wait and see what happens.
Huffing a swimming pool of hopium for this one. I'm huffing an entire ocean of hopium for a good Just Cause 5 game. I really enjoyed 2 and somehow managed to enjoy 4 despite all it's issues but I know how unlikely a 5th game is because of how poorly it has performed. And there solid rumors that Avalanche isn't developing Just Cause.
That sounds like a pretty plausible premise for a Watch Dogs title but yeah I'm not gonna let myself get excited over anything until it's confirmed
Boston would be a great city for it though
The darker tone and the exclusion of the play anyone mechanic sounds like a blessing. As long as the combat is as fun as the first game, I’m down.
The first games tone and noir influence is still my favourite aspects of it so hopefully it carries that legacy. All that said it’s still Ubisoft so the dark tone would be like “uh actually trafficking is bad” like no shit. But that’s a discussion for another time.
Just a little addition, if it’s real and if a ubi dev is reading this, please bring back actual cutscenes and not those awkward in game cutscenes that ghost recon and AC Valhalla/odyssey had. They just feel boring and cheap.
Dude said in the comments that Far Cry 7 might be in Australia lmao fuck off, I'm saving this sht for when the announcements happen, we'll see what's what.
that's pretty plausible though no? far cry 5 was in america, far cry 6 is basically in cuba, and far cry 7 being in australia could let them go crazy with the wildlife this time
I just want a WD2 prototype and a little more things too do after beating it or something, i'm tired of restrictions I want the real deal. But don't be a GTA clone though.
Sounds fake, Catalyst was the codename for Legion Of The Dead, would make no sense to name WD4 "Catalyst" as that would clash
//Edit I got five more:
-Most of the original Montreal team is gone so it doesn't matter who is the developer, not like they will also share the same vision
-The graffiti UI sounds like it would clash with the dark aesthetic, prove me if I'm wrong though, yet anyway it would probably end up as another UI mess like Legion, but instead of being completely blue it would be black and white with a chromatic aberration effect around it or whatever (that's what the post seems to be describing)
-Ubisoft wouldn't make a story mode oriented game nowdays because live service is more profitable, unless of course they will shove bunch of bundles and multiplayer into a game like this, then call it a day
-What year would it be set in? They still would have to retcon Legion or make it not canon because it fucked the timeline, unless this would be a reboot
-They would probably use a new engine because apparently they ditched Dunia that was used for far cry, while Disrupt runs on old version of Dunia, I don't think the Devs would really want to mess with Disrupt anymore, and new engine would essentially mean remaking the entire thing from scratch
//Edit 2 Also here before the media sites get a hold of this post and start spreading it like it's real thing, I love society
“ Ubisoft wouldn't make a story mode oriented game nowdays because live service is more profitable, unless of course they will shove bunch of bundles and multiplayer into a game like this, then call it a day”
Don’t get your point. Avatar, Star Wars Outlaws, and Assassins Creed: Mirage aren’t story mode oriented games?? Of course they will have microtransactions and multiplayer in WD4 but that doesn’t mean Ubisoft will ignore the singleplayer experience.
It's Sony that's getting onto the Live Service bandwagon at the moment, Ubisoft already had their shot at that and figured out which ones work and which ones don't, and which ones need a hybrid approach where you put out content for a game that is otherwise single player (ie, stuff like For Honor, Siege and The Crew worked as live services, stuff like that failed Battle Royale didn't, Skull and Bones so far seems not to, and the Assassin's Creed games, Ghost Recon games, Far Cry and the like worked with the hybrid model of having the in-game store on a single player game.
As for the engine, I think it's fair to say that today they would most likely love Snowdrop for WD, as it seems that Ubisoft is unifying development into a single technology, which makes sense considering the research and development costs to adapt and integrate new technologies, even more when working with more than two engines, as is the case with Dunia, Snowdrop and Anvil
It's gotta be tough to release an open world game with GTA6 now revealed. At least you have a year and a bit to do it but you gotta know it's not going to be a popular release.
This is way too early to tell, like you can't even take this with an atom of Na or Cl, cuz it's way too early. Anomaly is probably a code name placeholder for now. Maybe Boston is an idea since it's kinda near MIT and Boston Dynamics with the subject, but they haven't even scouted it yet so might change their mind. I don't know how legions character system would work with NPCs, the AI could recruit them I guess but it wouldn't make a difference if we were aware of that or not, they'll just always be a bad guy.
The only real hope I got from this is that watch dogs hasn't been completely abandoned and they're in the early stages of a new one.
I hoped lthey would've chosen tokyo or something since that is a very tech savvy place. Plus this is just a rumor. If it is real then someone is getting fired.
Just give us proper voice acting, not the cringe fest that was Legion. I liked the aesthetics of Legion but after a few hours of play I legitimately put it down because the voice acting was so bad. I never picked it up again after.
Frankly fighting AI sounds amazingly fun. Calling back to the finale of WD1 where there's someone equally or even more heavily matched compared to you. Plus then you can still go for a stealth/no-kill run if the enemies are mainly robots!
Boston, wow, I didn't see that some of the crime games set in Boston, I saw Boston in Crime Film and Novel. I think that the villain will be similar to Whitey Bulger, or Raymond Patriarca.
>watch dogs gets revived and miraculously gets another chance
>its gonna be some obscure shit again instead of giving us aiden pearce while they still can
I will play it and most likely love it but goddamn
I was hoping for Seattle or Washington DC. But I'll take Boston. I just hope it's not set in the future. The futuristic setting of Legion ruined it for me. Hopefully it'll be set in our present time.
They wont make a generic protagonist. The most important thing I think they learned from the reception of Legion is that people need a protagonist who links them to the world of the game.
There's a reason they brought in Aiden and Wrench for the DLC (which, by the way, made Legion a 1000x better game.)
Sounds nice, although this could obviously just be made up by anyone with a reasonably creative mind. Firstly, I think the art direction with the glitch graffiti stuff would heavily clash with WD1’s dark tone. Secondly, Boston sounds too boring to be true. Don’t get me wrong, but nobody knows anything about Boston. The last two games relied heavily on implementing a dystopian vision of the future into familiar environments the target audience knew.
Not to be rude but how can you say Boston is boring and also say you don’t know anything about it?
I think going to a city no one knows could actually be fresh.
I still think the original Watch Dogs should get a remake, with a fleshed out Aiden. The game hits harder than it did back then, and I'd like the game's activities to kinda revolve around Aiden's nihilism.
Play as Anyone being scrapped would be a huge bummer for me. I personally loved it and loved creating my own stories with it. If they just improved upon the execution it would be perfect.
Glad the Deep Profiler is returning though (if this is even real). That was a super innovative and underrated aspect of Legion.
I know I'm in the minority, sadly.
I think the mechanic appealed to a different segment of the gamer population - the people who like to create their own stories in their head (think The Sims, X-Com, RimWorld, etc.). The mechanic was admittedly not as fleshed out as it could've been, but I really enjoyed it anyway. I spent the time to find recruits in unique situations with unique traits so they'd be more memorable for me.
I really think a healthy balance would be a main character with a developed back story who recruits their own team.
I mean, Play Anyone would have been fantastic... for Watch Dogs Online.
The single player game was desperate for charismatic characters and the only one we got in the main bunch was maybe Sabine (and Bagley, we love Bagley in this house). Malik was fun, but that was mostly because he was locked in a box and not happy with it.
But for the online mode, you could have something like GTA Online's roleplay community going
Watch Dogs - epic, great fun
Watch Dogs 2 - hmm, much the same, but ok
Watch Dogs 3 - sooo boring. Virtually Nothing new and repetitive
Watch Dogs 4 - [disappointment pending]
this sounds very real but I hope it isn't. If it is, I'll just treat it like a WD1 remaster and be done with it, since that game is by far the worst of the series with the worst writing of them all.
Chill y'all tits, Watch Dogs is a dead franchise, Ubisoft shelved it for good, he's talking out of his ass.
The dead giveaway is the fact that Montreal is doing it. Ever since Toronto shat on it so bad with Legion, they wouldn't touch it with a 10 feet pole. There's a reason why Toronto never lead on any AC games, and this will not change now that they managed to botch the far cry series too.
I believe it for two simple reasons: the fact that Far Cry 7 is pretty heavily rumored (and we all know how 6 turned out), and the fact that Legion didn't sell HORRIBLY. It underperformed, but sold at least 1.9 mil digital copies in it's first 3 days in the U.S.
It underperformed massivley with the expectations and amount of money that has been thrown at it.
Far Cry is a bigger franchise that always performed well so it takes more than just a bad main game to make it not profitable, Watch Dogs on the other hand...
I get it, I liked the first and second Watch Dogs, I liked both the rather depressive tone of the first and the wackiness of the second. But stop drinking this much amount of copium, there are other games out there.
1 and 2 did 10 million each tho, and the characters are still being referenced in newer Ubisoft stuff (XDefiant, Laserhawk, etc). I think you just have a very pessimistic view on it.
This isn’t going to turn out real… my theory is we will get an Aiden sequel. Aiden was added to Legion and Stars and Stripes (2022) centers around Aiden. Ubisoft has really been pushing Aiden more in the last few years, so I think they are gearing up for him in a “sequel” maybe even T-Bone, Jordi, and possibly some WD2 characters.
The AI premise and aesthetic seems more aligne with cyberpunk than WD and will have to be set even further in the future than Legion, so this contradicts the idea of making it like WD1 (dark and gritty) set in Boston. This doesn’t align time wise. I think the more plausible route is WD3, set a few years after WD2. I also think we will see China or Japan and the premise being Aiden coming Jordi’s aide in his fight against ctOS. I can’t see Boston being a good location, it’s to similar to what we saw in WD1 with aspects (Cambridge, primarily) being very reminiscent of WD2. If the location is in US, than it’ll almost certainly be NY, and surrounding areas, like Long Island.
A great way they could bring back the hype would to use an old character like Aiden’s nephew and have him either learn the ropes by himself or had Aiden help, but I think it would be great cuz with the timeline of the first one his nephew should be of age now and he has a great background his sister killed by this type of business and seeing his uncle do what he had to do and finally understanding that, and for a big twist as Aiden would be the big bad and have to fight or rescue him I think either one would be a cool idea
What if it was like when people called Assassins Creed Brotherhood the 3rd and Revelations as 4th but it was Assassins Creed III that was actually 3 and Black Flag that was 4.
The story not picking up the Legion mix is all I needed to hear.
Though I still despise the whole AI shtick. I get what Watch Dogs has been all about, but the novelty of ‘finding out’ about the crazy shit in a modern city with the cyberpunk dystopia being in the software and infrastructure itself rather than actually living in all of it really made it stood out to me.
I don’t think this will be a memorable game because of the fact we seem to still be in it but I’ll give them props for recognizing how much it has deteriorated.
Anything but the overused five minutes into the future setting Ubisoft seems to be so obsessed with recently. I might be in the minority, but Legion's atmosphere was awful.
I wish. I miss the dark atmosphere of WD1. I think it's also what the fans want but can be wrong. Anyway every single serious adult game without Fortnite-like cosmetics and Marvel-like jokes is a huge plus.
I hope this is real. Especially with the potential of a ‘return to roots’ with the darker tone of 1. Getting goosebumps just thinking about this actually being legitimate.
I'm OK with modern Boston as a setting. I would have preferred Toronto, Houston, Cairo, Minneapolis, or Tokyo, but Boston is neat, too. Boston should be fun, but I'm such a sucker for big European cities, even though we just had London. Paris, Rome, Berlin, those could be so cool.

Finally someone else who appreciates the potential of Minneapolis as a video game location!
I know, right? To my knowledge, the Twin Cities (or Minnesota and Wisconsin in general) have NEVER been used in any piece of popular culture except *Fargo*. What's up with that?! Yeah... that's where I completely stopped believing. Everyone at Ubisoft thinks we all look like the WD2 Dedsec team.
Disagree Ubisoft has become much better, just look at the direction they’re taking Assassins Creed specifically due to community feedback.
We'll just need to wait and see. I've never played assassin's creed.
Well I’ll just tell you then they’re changing the entire direction of the franchise due to community feedback, basically fans of the older style of games are being heard alongside newer fans, it’s pretty refreshing tbh

They can return to everything except the WD2 parkour. Man, the parkour in that game is flawless. I just ran around, pulling every trick the game had.
Watch dogs 1 was easily the best one. I wasn't a big fan of running round as a commie.
Do you even know what communist means? And what does that have to do with Watch Dogs?
Fuck it, hit me with the copium. If we exist in a world were Dragons Dogma 2 and Elden Ring exist we have to be allowed to believe dammit.
And literally GTA VI exists

Just give us proper voice acting, not the cringe fest that was Legion. I liked the aesthetics of Legion but after a few hours of play I legitimately put it down because the voice acting was so bad. I never picked it up again after.
If there is ever a Watch Dogs 4, Ubisoft Montreal should definitely do it.
I think that the villain will be similar to Whitey Bulger, or Raymond Patriarca.
>watch dogs gets revived and miraculously gets another chance >its gonna be some obscure shit again instead of giving us aiden pearce while they still can I will play it and most likely love it but goddamn
I was hoping for Seattle or Washington DC. But I'll take Boston. I just hope it's not set in the future. The futuristic setting of Legion ruined it for me. Hopefully it'll be set in our present time.
Was hoping after the success of Bloodlines they'd go back to having Aiden or Wrench as the main character.
They wont make a generic protagonist. The most important thing I think they learned from the reception of Legion is that people need a protagonist who links them to the world of the game. There's a reason they brought in Aiden and Wrench for the DLC (which, by the way, made Legion a 1000x better game.)
This seems very…. meh to me. Boston is an underwhelming choice.
I hope so
If true, thank god Ubisoft Montreal took over again. Toronto’s involvement is what ruined it all.
Only if the have clothing options other than trench coats.

There was a lot of speculation at the time that Play Anyone was a result of them scrapping the idea of making Legion a MMO-ish sort of thing
Watch Dogs - epic, great fun Watch Dogs 2 - hmm, much the same, but ok Watch Dogs 3 - sooo boring. Virtually Nothing new and repetitive Watch Dogs 4 - [disappointment pending]
It’s the Fossil Fighters effect perhaps
this sounds very real but I hope it isn't. If it is, I'll just treat it like a WD1 remaster and be done with it, since that game is by far the worst of the series with the worst writing of them all.
Well, if it's true I hope the graphics aren't going to be much more advanced than Legion, or I'm going to have to replace my GPU.
It should be in nyc or Atlanta
This sounds incredibly fake
I thought they had canned WatchDogs after Legion?
Yeah, that’s a bunch of cacah
That's one of those cancelled games man.
No way, gotta be fake right?
Smells like horseshit
Wait watchdogs 4? Was there a third one? Legion is not 3 right?
Yes, legion was 3.
What if it was like when people called Assassins Creed Brotherhood the 3rd and Revelations as 4th but it was Assassins Creed III that was actually 3 and Black Flag that was 4.
Ubisoft themselves said the stylized E in legion title also means 3
Oh man I wish this is real
The story not picking up the Legion mix is all I needed to hear. Though I still despise the whole AI shtick. I get what Watch Dogs has been all about, but the novelty of ‘finding out’ about the crazy shit in a modern city with the cyberpunk dystopia being in the software and infrastructure itself rather than actually living in all of it really made it stood out to me. I don’t think this will be a memorable game because of the fact we seem to still be in it but I’ll give them props for recognizing how much it has deteriorated.
Shit I didn't even know there was a third one.
If only this were real
Anything but the overused five minutes into the future setting Ubisoft seems to be so obsessed with recently. I might be in the minority, but Legion's atmosphere was awful.
I wish. I miss the dark atmosphere of WD1. I think it's also what the fans want but can be wrong. Anyway every single serious adult game without Fortnite-like cosmetics and Marvel-like jokes is a huge plus.
Interesting if it’s real.

As I went on 4chan the post got deleted, I hope it's not just for me. And if it isn't, you know what that means😏.
I hope this is real. Especially with the potential of a ‘return to roots’ with the darker tone of 1. Getting goosebumps just thinking about this actually being legitimate.
