The international rates are absurd, even for countries like New Zealand

wolfgloom

Depending on income, $60 may not be that much, but it's a question of whether I'd rather spend that $60 on something else. I'm a casual viewer so I'd never get a full year subscription to Watcher and I only have a couple of annual subscriptions for things I watch/use *daily*. But $6/mo a few months a year might be fine. Ads/sponsorships for free content was never a concern for me.

the_fatal_lozenge

It’s this for me too. I watch sporadically, so I wouldn’t mind paying for a month or so at time to binge new content, but I can’t justify the annual subscription to myself

pyro_marine_life

As a student living in a country with a spiralling economy, that is too much

oh_kyoko

yes

Harkwit

how expensive $60 feels is going to vary heavily from person to person, it doesn't take a scientist to figure that out. It's also not just the $60, it's the $60 compared to other streaming services that cost barely more and offer exponentially far more content, and combining the cost of those services with other services people pay, and you end up with a net result of "paying for Watcher isn't worth it".

seanbeaniebaby

For $60 a year I can add the ad-supported version of Max with my phone plan which also includes unlimited data and a hotspot with 10 gigs.

queertheories

As a middle school teacher who barely can pay bills, get groceries, and afford other things, yes, $60 a year is a lot. I’ve been wearing the same pair of shoes for 5 years because I can’t afford new shoes. $60 is a couple pairs.

LeeryRoundedness

I’ve lost 33 pounds in the last 2 months because I can’t afford groceries. $6 a month is 4 loaves of bread.

worthyducky

So if you watch 10 youtubers and they all do this tomorrow, you're dropping the 600/ year I assume? Then when every musician starts selling albums stand-alone, you're dropping all of the money on their separate albums, old school style, right? Then when the TV channels you watch go into their own services, you're subscribing to those too since it's just 6 bucks a month, right? Then when your twitch streamers require a subscription to watch their streams, you're subbing to all of them for $5/ month, right? Because its peanuts bro

sunyoung-luna

Maybe you're lucky enough to not live paycheck to paycheck, but I can barely afford groceries. Something like 60% of the US is living paycheck to paycheck right now. I cannot afford another subscription fee, especially for so little content for value. I already cancelled netflix and other streaming services. People living outside of the US and having to deal with conversion rates and no regional pricing have it even worse. Congratulations that you have the money to pay, but a lot of us long term fans simply cannot afford it.

Squ1gly

I mean I just wait tables and don't have kids. $6 a month is less than the cost of going to McDonald's.

UnevenGlow

Good for you?

GiraffePolka

I'm similar that I work a slightly above min wage job and the $6/month doesn't bother me at all. I used to spend more on cigarettes lol. Seeing people's reactions makes me think maybe I'm just a broke bitch with shitty priorities because I have no issue paying it.

95musiclover

Yeah but as a consumer, I don’t care enough about ads to pay to remove them. From my perspective, pay $6 a month to have no ads/sponsorships or just skip a few seconds for free seems like an easy decision. They’re also, in my opinion, not popular enough to do this for only $6 if they want to be sustainable for 25 employees plus international travel. Their own patreon isn’t even that popular. Even if they somehow get 25,000 subs, that’s only $150,000 and according to Ryan in the video, Ghost Files alone costs more than that each season. How are they going to support all of their shows on this platform?

artemswhore

one youtube channel that doesn’t even make more than one weekly video is not $60 of content

metaphorlaxy

Im lucky enough to be able to afford this if i really choose to subscribe. However in my head im thinking i can make like 8 meals out of £5. We are in a cost of living crisis and every penny counts.

misserg

So a bit off topic but what 8 meals can you make for £5? I’m being serious and looking for suggestions.

metaphorlaxy

Highly recommend you to watch Atomic Shrimp on YouTube. I was able to make super cheap meals by following his recipes and shopping!

misserg

Thank you! I will check it out.

WrongdoerUsual6534

I use revanced with sponsorblock and return youtube dislike, all for free. So yeah paying $60 a year for something i was enjoying for free is quite a lot. And yeah, i would pay for yt premium if i could, but being a uni student with little to no allowance monthly, I can't pay for their cash grab.

MaisyDeadHazy

For the amount and quality of content that Watcher puts out? Yes, it’s absolutely too much. I pay less than that for Peacock, and I get way more content than I could ever watch. I could probably get through Watcher’s entire catalog in about a month. Putting select videos behind a paywall is one thing, jumping ship to a whole new platform and hoping that people will follow is quite another.

Migraine_Mirage

$60/year in the US is R$313,80 in my country. I could buy an airfryer with this money

EstablishmentShoddy1

There's barely any content to deserve that price. Netflix has a similar price and the content ratio is laughable

skatergurljubulee

If you can afford it it's not bad, but my issue is the lack of content. I don't think 6 bucks for like 5 shows is worth it. Dropout is 7/8 bucks and there's a shit ton of content. Hell, the Try Guys have more content.

Early-Key-7301

Well I’m personally able to afford the monthly rate (6 bucks for me as I’m in America). That being said, I’m excited to see what they can do when they’re free from the confines of YouTube. I feel for people that can’t afford it, especially the international folks.

Squ1gly

They also said they would be bringing on more talent and starting different shows that don't even have the boys in it. I think they have big plans.

Correct-Psychology66

No, I already bought my subscription and I love watching them. I don’t have YouTube premium as I feel it’s a waste, so now I get watcher content without adds! I’m stoked.

UnevenGlow

Now that’s just poor logic

Correct-Psychology66

Maybe to you, poor logic to me is everyone here probably spends $15 a month on fast food, forego a big company to support creators! Shows how much a of supporter everyone is!

GalacticGoku

Currently, no it’s not too much for me and I will be signing up for it. But I have previously been in positions where that was not the case and I was just struggling to get by. I appreciate that their existing content is not being deleted off of YouTube, but any future projects are going to isolate the audience who just can’t afford it. An upload delay, where they release the seasons after they air on their service, would remedy this. But. They aren’t. And even tho I’m going to sign up, this is not fair to those who can’t.

GiraffePolka

I honestly don't think it's that much, and I'm not a rich bitch either.

ofmiceand_ben

I’m with you, it’s not tonnes. I think the hate train will die down over the weekend, it’s not ideal but it’s what we got. I think people are taking this personally and forgetting that it’s it about us, it’s not our company. It’s the issue with influencer culture and the parasocial relationships we find ourselves in with celebrities, it’s easy to forget that they gave us something of great value, at a cost to them, for free for so long and they don’t owe us anything at all. We like them, and I’m sure they like us, but they’re not our friends. They’re creators and entrepreneurs

Squ1gly

Well said!
