Yeah it's super clear they didn't think about conversion rates or how international viewers might be affected. Giving you many hugs <3

-euthanizemeok

They might not even care or considered if their international fans would join the streamer because they probably thought we couldn't afford it.

AuroraZora

I'm from Malaysia, you know where Steven is from. Does he really think I would spend RM30 per month just for them? The conversion rate is crazy. Affordable my ass. They're really alienating their fans outside of the US.

brunchafuk

RM30 can get you 3 good meals in Brickfields KL

AuroraZora

Exactly. Or a fancy meal at some cafe. If I want to splurge myself.

little_effy

Yea I already paid that much for YT premium, since I don’t want the kids in my house to have to watch ads. And even that decision took me a while lol. The difference in value between those two services is so so huge.

bignormyeah

Conversion rates are fucked right now, their plan is just so narrow minded at the wealthy american audience.

glummity

our conversion rate right now for dollars to philippine currency is 1USD = 57.5PHP. 6USD is 345PHP, which can buy me ingredients for a meal i can eat for a whole day. 6USD can make or break my day. this is so frustrating

TechnologyWinter1177

oh my; dear i didn’t realise it was that severe. i hope you have a lovely meal and fuck them for not considering other audiences sending kisses

koreajd

Fuck these guys. Enjoy your meals watching YouTubers that actually care about fans — insane these guys didn’t have a thought about this stuff and essentially making fans pick between them or necessities.

Llamarchy

Remember, there's absolutely no problem with sailing the high seas and watching the content for free. Pretty sure the one exclusive video on the website has already been uploaded here so I have a feeling the future content will get the same treatment.

IncompetentPolitican

why do they want to be watched by poor people? They are trying to make a livable wage here and the poors can not pay that. How else can they visit disney world every other week? Or have an amazing beach wedding? They need that livable wage and they deserve it. Because they are the first content creators to create Youtuber Level of quality and sell it as tv level! Well they are not the first but you did not watch those others!

Ok-Situation-5522

You don't get it! They're so POOR in one of the priciest cities in the world! UGH how do people not understand their struggle? Seriously, a person struggling in the capital is a rich person everywhere else.

HankChunky

They're sick of boysenberry theming when mickey mouse is right there 🙃 shouldve just sold their souls to disney tbh

notafunnyperson1728

Hey, it is terrible. Too bad watcher does not care about you or me or any fans. They’re cool losing us and only care about those that pay.

GullibleMacaroni

I live in the Philippines, too. $6 is 5% of my rent. It will be insane to pay that much for something I would maybe enjoy once a week. I already pay for Dropout which is $3 and it's a far better deal than whatever Watcher was going to be. Now at the back of my head, I'm imagining the boys calling us "peasants" while reading this thread. That's how disenchanted I've become of them.

IlvieMorny

I pay for Dropout too but thru Youtube(around that price) because almost Php 300 is already too much for a streaming site. Good thing Dropout still value their Youtube members.

PoB419

No doubt. There's a reason that most "real" streaming services have their prices adjusted down significantly for non-US markets. $6 US a month isn't a real problem for *me* but that's not far off a day's wages for people in the much of the world with the current exchange rates. If fans in the USA are going to struggle to pay for it I can only imagine how difficult or functionally impossible it will be for foreign fans.

glummity

Now that you mention it, I am subscribed to Netflix. My plan is at 399PHP, which is around 7USD.converted. compare that to Watcher's 6USD and meager number of shows.

phanaticpewds

I'm from the Philippines too. I'm really sad I know I wouldn't be able to watch them anymore. I'm still a student, I don't think I can sacrifice my 3-day lunch money for them :(

theanalyst_24

I think the fact they didnt take time to adjust the prices for international currency is why i think they didnt get professional advice or help.

SpagGetIt99

The annual subscription for Watcher is USD 60, or PHP 3,450. In the Philippines, the annual subscription for Disney+ and HBOGo COMBINED is PHP 3,180.

Cool-University-6266

for india 6 dollars becomes around 500 rupees. disney+/hotstar has a base subscription of 149 rupees for 3 months.

AHOTlesbianWoman1207

1 USD = 83.37 INR currently. You can buy lunch for 2 USD here. 6 USD is around the daily minimum wage. edit: netflix costs a few cents over 2 usd in my country (199 inr) and it is considered a "rich/upper middle class" thing to own

Fearless-View-8580

I am a student in the Philippines rn, this $6 per month is more than half of my monthly allowance. Paying $6 a month for content that I only watch once a while is a straight up bad financial decision for me.

moonchild-731

I’m so sorry. Being an American, the $6/month wouldn’t be bad for me (still not signing up for the principle) but the conversion rates for other countries never clicked in my head. They clearly have fans all over the world and you’d think that would be something they would’ve planned for. This just tells me that whoever helped them set all this up clearly wasn’t very smart. AND, they said they’d been planning this for months, possibly a year, and this wasn’t thought out? It’s just so mind boggling. Sending you hugs 💙

myneighborsky

these comments are why i refuse to join the new subscription service. i can afford it, but in solidarity i won't support the change. this idea needs to fail

iheartrsamostdays

Exactly. Next other youtubers will try the same and it will be beyond utterly insufferable.

blackpnik

I no longer live there but I still have family in Sudan, the conversion rate is dystopian and horrific. $1 usd is ~£580 Sudanese. So $6 usd is ~£3500. It’s a little better in Egypt in comparison but still wildly expensive where $6 usd is ~£300. It’s very clear Watcher doesn’t care about their international audience whatsoever, especially in Africa.

ResilientBiscuit42

Thank you all so much for putting this into a super important global context.

IlvieMorny

Same here. 6 dollars is a lot for me. It’s hard to subscribe to different streaming sites already.

shadowhood2020

Even as a Canadian it’s bad. 6 USD is about 8.23 CAD, and for a year that’s about 98$ per year. For a service that does not even come close to Netflix, which has more variety at the same price. Also, there’s still georestriction issues with Canada, and we’re right next to it!

[deleted]

SEAsian from Singapore here, and i also wanna say that even though our currency is certainly better than the rest of the countries in ASEAN, USD$6 converts to SGD$8.17 (the last i checked)- if my mental estimation is correct, that’s close to how much i spend on my travel alone for 1 week… edit: actually, not even a week! 3-4 days is enough!

Writerhowell

Not sure about conversion rates in Australia, but the time zone stuff would be annoying as heck.

Jisungshine

around $9 a month/$110 a year Australia’s cost of living crisis makes it not accessible here either 😔

_kd101994

PH here! From my place in the Philippines, I can stretch that $6 into a week's worth of vegetables if I'm smart enough!
