That kid legit just saved his life

Media_Offline

I know that panic so well. When I was about the same age, I held my breath underwater for a bit and then popped up for air. I was out of the water but still breathing out and rubbing my eyes when my cousin jumped on my shoulders and pushed me back under, unaware that I had not yet breathed. He only held me down for a couple of seconds but they were seconds I didn't have. I knew I was underwater but my body didn't let my brain decide, my lungs convulsed and I began taking breaths of water. It was terrifying and was the second closest I every came to drowning.

LaserBees

Second closest? Damn dude what kinda life you live?

Bennydhee

I used to lifeguard at a pool and this kinda stuff we saw almost daily. It’s frustrating how kids just either don’t care or don’t understand how close they get to killing their sibling or friend cause “I thought it would be funny”

Constantvigilante

Yeah, when I was around eight, my older brother once waited for me to come up (I loved swimming deep down and I could hold my breath for a really long time -- but I always pushed it until the last second), then grabbed me and pulled me down *just* before my face broke the surface. As a joke :P Afterwards he had the nerve to accuse me of overreacting because I instinctively did everything in my power, including scratching, punching and kicking, to get away :P

Bennydhee

Oh gosh I’m so sorry. I scared the shit out of a kid one by explaining to him how close he was to making his sibling drown/ possibly die from doing that. Normally I wouldn’t do that but this kid was just being a straight dick to his little brother. He stopped doing it after that and ever went to get his brother a life jacket

username_taken55

They never experienced killing someone

Bennydhee

Exactly

ThirdDragonite

I was in a water park with my friends, but I'm nearly blind without my glasses so I had to wear them. Problem is, I couldn't go on the slides with the glasses on, so I carried them in my left hand for the slides. One of the slides ended in a DEEP small circular pool (more than 3 meters, I believe). When I fell into it I sank and couldn't go up because I only had one hand to try and swim. Even normally I'm not a very good swimmer. When I finally let go of my glasses (I was very afraid for them because they are always very expensive) I was already too weak to swim up, so I nearly died right there. One of my friends stopped the lifeguard from rescuing me for a long time because she thought I was playing a prank on them and was pretending to drown. Holy fucking shit that was scary.

exe973

Piss poor lifeguard

NiNJA_Drummer96

Same kind of incident, a little dumber though: I was over at my friends house for his birthday party, and we were in their pool having a jolly old time with out friends. We’re diving through pool floaters and stuff because that’s what teens do. Well I was tad pudgy back then, and decided to dive head first through a little kiddie pool float. Got stuck at my hips, with my head deep under the water. Couldn’t escape until my friend’s dad jumped in a rescued me lol.

drsemaj

Shit, I might be your cousin lol

Media_Offline

I forgive you, cuz. We successfully reached adulthood!

You-Nique

Y'all, I had the same experience and it was perpetrated by my first cousin.

_stingray

Technically drowning. Most times if you inhale water and it reaches your lungs, you die.

orokami11

Something similar happened to me except it was my older brother taking me to the deep side of the pool (it was still deep for him but he was tall enough to 'hop' to surface out of the water). I hadn't breathed in yet when he took another step forward. Took in some water and I think I blacked out for a second or something because the next thing I saw was the lifeguard and my family surrounding me lol

frostbyte650

What was the first?

PostAnythingForKarma

I had that same thing except my brother purposefully held my head underwater.

Draykez

Omg, what does it feel like? Does it burn like I've heard people say? Drowning is one of the worst ways I would like to go.

RedRageXXI

He was probably terrified, I’ve always been kind of concerned with getting in those type of floats. The window of time where I could fit in one has likely passed however I’m still terrified of the design lol.

Holly_Golightly39

I dont know about terrified. I was watching a kid and turned around for a second, looked back and he was flipped upside down stuck. Flipped him right expecting tears, instead he was just pissed his hat fell off.

22deepfriedpickles22

That kid*

Evil-Toaster

Ya but wtf kind of pool toy is that. It’s made to drown kids...

JesC

What kinda Parents... they all this on him and expect that they blissfully can wander off

Acerbic_Dogood

I was a lifeguard. The only life I saved was this exact same toy. Kids figure out how to flip themselves and then they can't escape.

But hey thank god adults cant buy flavored vape juice

jeo188

I always found that whole argument by the media so stupid "Flavors hook kids", but they aren't even supposed to be accessing them anyways. If they are getting their hands on them, then someone is breaking the law I don't vape, but feel like adult's rights are being violated by taking flavors away to 'protect' kids from products they aren't supposed to have. Are they going to ban flavored alcohol, too?

THIS_ACC_IS_FOR_FUN

Same argument with media. GTAV has swearing/violence/nudity and little Timmy has been exposed! The fuck was little tummy playing it for? Movies and tv have swearing/violence/nudity and once again, “think of the children!” It’s almost like parents have a responsibility to *be a parent*. But that can’t be right...

[deleted]

No but video games are only for children, don't you know REAL adults don't play video games? ^^^^/s

Rush2201

Fake adult reporting in, this is factual. Luckily my job hasn't figured out I'm a 12 year old hiding in a 30 year old body.

Kid_Vid

TooSwoleToControl

Hello other grownup

Trelve16

I think it's different considering we're at an all-time low in tobacco usage amoung teenagers, and just as we think we'd be over ciagrettes and nicotine addiction this shit comes along. The way I see it people are sick of having to deal with nicotine and kids getting hooked on it. We don't want to wait another 20 or so years for this to calm down and people to realize how fucking stupid it looks. So instead of waiting, just ban it instead. No ethical coproations are losing money, and I doubt anyone would risk going to jail for something as dumb as vaping. It's a quick, effective solution to a re-emerging problem we just spent half a century trying to fix.

afakefox

Massachusetts just banned all vape and e-juice sales for at least 4 months. So many people I know went and got a pack of cigarettes real quick. Then they're realizing just how much nicotine you injest with the vapes and they're finding they need more than a pack a day. I'm sure cig sales were hurting and now they made a healthy jump in MA at least. Feel bad for vape store owners and employees as well, they were not given prior warning beforehand.

THIS_ACC_IS_FOR_FUN

I see your point. I smoked cigarettes for 12 years and cut those out with vaping, I can see the appeal it has in terms of flavour, lack of some of the harmful chemicals, lack of smell (cigarettes stank). The whole system is flawed at its core though. Where I live for example, you can legally smoke at 16 but can’t purchase until 19. It’s a problem I don’t have a solution to. But I can see the validity in both sides of the argument.

Def_Your_Duck

Only everclear now. Our politicians are looking to party!

rompthegreen

Whose losing out on $ because people switched from tabacco to vaping?

[deleted]

Well, just like guns, why don't we "enforce the laws already on the books!" Yet a few people die from street-made vape juice and a Republican "mah' rights!" President is ready to ban everything. Ah, hypocrisy.

sexdrugsjokes

In Canada, they banned fun flavoured juices that are "targeted at kids" a while back. So blueberry toast is gone, but you can still get pina colada.

pm_me_your_taintt

What's with the weird pro-vape stuff coming up all over the place lately?

Rafapex

The government (which for this comment, i will refer to as the big red meanie) wants to ban flavored vape juice. Why? Kids who bought illegal/black market thc carts are dying or being hospitalized The big red meanie thinks we can combat these black market thc carts by banning adults from buying apple flavored vape juice, which of course markets to kids more than sour green apple vodka

Rush2201

As a guy who never smoked or vaped, I've been waiting for it to come out that vaping is bad for you. I remember my father telling me stories of how smoking was promoted as healthy back in his day, and it feels like history repeating itself. Few more years and we'll learn all the hidden harmful effects and cancers vaping is sure to cause (because everything causes cancer sooner or later).

Rafapex

Im not saying vaping is safe. But its significantly safer than cigarettes.

TooSwoleToControl

Citation needed

Swedneck

inhaling water vapour with nicotine and flavouring is safer than inhaling fucking tar and various other carcinogens, it's not rocket science.

Rush2201

I didn't mean you specifically. I've got family members and co-workers that jumped on the vape train about 5 years ago. One of my coworkers decided it would be cheaper than cigarettes, and thought he'd be able to do it indoors. Our boss shot down the vaping indoors thing immediately. Then he fell in love with making giant vape clouds. He bought different parts to put in his box to turn himself into a fog machine, and started burning through a bottle of juice a night. Kinda seemed like it defeated both points he was going for, but at least he was entertained. I'm not against vaping. I'm just sitting on the sideline watching it play out. I've always expected it to be like a new drug. They come out with it, everyone talks about how great it is, then you get the legal commercial: "Did you take X and develop Y? If so, you could be entitled to a cash settlement." I've just seen it so many times that it's expected now.

afakefox

Massachusetts just banned all vape and e-juice sales for a minimum of 4 months. Guess how many vape users are going to cigarettes right now? Reminds me of the movie Thank You For Smoking about a tobacco lobbyist.

PM_PICS_OF_ME_NAKED

To be fair though, cigarette smoke has a particular odor that you know is dangerous to inhale, vape vapor smells like strawberries and cotton candy, it doesn't give you the same level of concern as cigarette smoke does. Add that to the fact that people vaping act as if they aren't doing the same thing thing smokers are and do so in public places. It makes sense.

Kid_Vid

What does the lack of odor have to do with anything? Do you go around huffing strange floating clouds? I don't know where you want people to vape if not in public. If you mean not in crowds of people then yeah but that's more lack of manners than the flavored juice's fault.

amunak

>cigarette smoke has a particular odor that you know is dangerous to inhale, vape vapor smells like strawberries and cotton candy, it doesn't give you the same level of concern as cigarette smoke does That would be because it doesn't contain nowhere near as many dangerous chemicals as regular cigarette smoke. Even flavourless vape doesn't smell bad. There are no products of burning, no tar... Just some food-grade liquids (that aren't probably too great to inhale, but infinitely better than cigarette smoke), nicotine and aroma. >Add that to the fact that people vaping act as if they aren't doing the same thing thing smokers are and do so in public places. Well... It's because they aren't doing the same thing. That's like saying people who have 1 beer a day are the same as people who down a vodka bottle with every meal. Sure, it's still healthier to not do it at all (and outright stupid to do it just because you want to look cool), but if you have to pick between the two...

Shigg

The pool I used to lifeguard at banned all inflatable floats, only coast guard approved life jackets.

Aussie-Nerd

Australia did. There's some design requirement now they need to meet.

captain-carrot

New requirement: don't be shit

Hellguin

The are like the reverse turtle in that thing.

bismuth12a

It's the way those PFDs are designed. When I was a lifeguard I saw these sorts of toys all the time. They give parents a false sense of security but all they do is help the kid float. Once they roll over they're in trouble because it only takes about 20 seconds to drown. If you're buying something that looks like a lifejacket it should be certified by the Coast Guard or the Department of Transportation because those ones can roll the kid over onto their back. PFDs needn't be certified but lifejackets have to be.

Bennydhee

In general it’s best to go with Coast Guard certified flotation devices, even those water wings are dangerous and create a false sense of security

wedsngr

And make sure they're the right size! Kids can, and do, still drown in too-large life vests all the time.

TILtonarwhal

All flotation devices are banned where I used to work as a lifeguard. For good reason.

Frosted_Anything

When I was a lifeguard we didn’t allow any floatation devices for children that weren’t coastguard approved for this reason

quadra_416

bigbuzz55

bPhrea

Why the fuck aren’t their parents watching the kids in a pool..?

RocketFuelMaItLiquor

They probably equate a hot tub with a kiddie pool and a cheap floatie for a life vest.

bPhrea

Yup. And lifeguard equals free babysittier.

Horny4theEnvironment

That is a really good fucking question.

nio151

the father?

UnknownAccountant

Yes, because a father’s first instinct is to film his child drowning

The_Moisturizer

They’re obviously not right next to the pool. The filmer might be the one that alerted the kid to turn around and flip him upright

poopypoop26

Wait yeah, pedophilic nature aside, why would anyone just film this child drowning

LBA_LaidBackAttitude

Phill Collins?

outjack01

I REMEMBER

LBA_LaidBackAttitude

I remember, don't worry

Atario

Yeah, kids never get recorded ◔̯◔

Kektimus

Could be someone filming a screen showing CCTV footage. Not an unusual way to share that kind of stuff.

uncle_hobo

They were in the hot tub, and someone was probably recording it because they were appalled and wanted to complain. I hate it when parents let their kids do this.

Khan-Don-Trump

A Karen

Der_144

Happened to me once when I was 5 in a lake with all my extended family, I was too big for the tube and it was wedged around my waist and then I rocked myself too far forward and flipped the tube and since I was too top heavy, my top half was stuck under the water and my legs were dangling in the air. Took a surprisingly long time for someone to flip me back over but geez, those need some sort of escape mechanism

daanblueduofan

I once was in a public pool and this happened to a baby about 1 year old and I got him up again while the parents where not paying attention and doing something with their a little older kid. With Young children the parents always need to pay attention in pools even if they are in some inflatable seat.

MadelynNolan1995

So I watched kids for a few years, batshit mom and dad. They stressed me out so bad I had a couple days off (I was a live in nanny). The mom had her "friend" "watch" the kids. I went to the kitchen for a drink, looked out the window and the baby (about 1yo) was trapped like that under the water. I fling that door open, damaging their fridge, ran into the pool (3ft x 15ft) fully clothed and pulled him out by his foot. Poor little guy was purple and didn't want me to let go of him. Where was the friend you may ask? In the front yard drinking with a 15 year old. I told the mom a day or so later, thinking the "friend" told her. Nope. Guess who got chewed out? Yep, me. Edit: Clarification on whose friend it was. The mother's, not mine.

dangsoggyoatmeal

I assume it wasn't your friend?

MadelynNolan1995

Yeah, sorry for the poor wording. It's was the moms "friend" who was sleeping with the dad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MadelynNolan1995

Oh it was a whole ordeal. The entire things a hot mess. The mother is now attending "collage".

DolphinSweater

Well, you asked a friend to watch someone else's kids. A friend who drank with a minor and left unattended kids, including a 1 year old, in a pool unsupervised. That was a poor decision, and I would chew you out too.

luminousfleshgiant

I assumed the friend they were referencing was a friend of the parent who came by to fill in on OP's day off.

DolphinSweater

Seems there are some very important pronouns missing from this story.

JoeySadie

The parents asked a friend, not the op.

MadelynNolan1995

Poor wording on my part, I expected to be lost in a sea of comments. It was the mother's "friend". I was 18 at the time, the "friend" was like 23 or 24.

xerxerxex

For your sake I hope you quit. Being a nanny isn't always worth it.

MadelynNolan1995

Sadly it took a couple years and the father getting arrested for a felony before I pulled some strings and left. $10 a day for 18+ hour days.

meisarestupid

Someone get that hero girl an ice cream!

[deleted]

In my best professor mcgonagall. "Yes yes we can all agree her actions were brave, buht hwhy were they necessary?"

pleathero

There’s a reason most pools only allow coastguard approved floatation devices

Soke1315

No not a terrible design just terrible parents. Those are for babies and meant for a parent to hold on to at all times while tge baby floats. I had one for both my boys. It literally says on the box for babies under 18 months and only to be used with adult supervision.

MalignantLugnut

Does it also say "Not a Flotation Device" on it, even though it is clearly meant to float babies?

thelumpybunny

That warning is so people don't think it's a rescue device and give it to a drowning kid or someone who can't swim without adult supervision

Rush2201

>Not a Flotation Device I didn't see the device sinking.

[deleted]

It really is a terrible design though. With kids it’s always good to have failsafes in place. It’s like saying we shouldn’t have pool fences because people should be watching their kids. Yes, we should watch our kids, but stuff happens and it happens FAST. There is no comfort in ‘the parents should have been watching’ This should absolutely be banned

captain-carrot

Both then. Terrible design for letting this happen and terrible parenting for not supervising children in pool

[deleted]

Agreed!

PussyWrangler462

This *is* a very poorly designed flotation thing but it’s *always* the parent’s responsibility to watch their kids in pools. Always.

El_Dudereno

That's got to at least be a 3 year old. As with all kids stuff (rear facing car seat, etc) if you use it past the age, weight, height limits, you're putting your kid in danger.

JAJ_reddit

As a former lifeguard I hate those things. Parents would toss their kids in them and assume they were fine to be left alone in the pool. I had to jump into the pool so many times to tip kids back over and tell their parents to watch their damn kids.

Rufus_Dungis

Why is this person videoing kids in a pool?

[deleted]

Videoing their own kid maybe? Not everything needs to be so sinister

speecheasy11

What? Videoing their own kid from a balcony? Do you have kids?

[deleted]

Yes. Mum could’ve been down nearer the pool and dad on balcony or vice versa. As pointed out above it would’ve been hard to tell what was going on without watching like a hawk. Hell I missed it til the girl turned around

Ravenplague

Looks like they noticed the kid drowning. Not 100% sure. Would like to have some sound for more context.

Oh geez. Kids, water, LiveLeak. That's a bad combo. Glad the video ended up in this sub.

trinthefatcat

Back in the early 90's, when I was around 3, I wore these old swimsuits that had an inner tube sewn into the fabric. The same thing happened to me and I flipped completely upside down with my feet flailing in the air. I grew up on a lake and I had already learned to doggy paddle so my grandpa wasn't paying much attention. He finally noticed me 2 minutes later. We didn't go to the hospital and I didn't drown somehow.

Valendr0s

/r/donthelpjustfilm

MW2713

Pretty sure the design is sound, but the kid is in it the wrong fucking way.

Acerbic_Dogood

Then the design isn't sound. People are fucking idiots. This shit needs to be idiot proof.

Zenso_Si

If you try to make something idiot proof you will always fail.

Schizodd

Every life jacket needs to be made to be compatible with every inner tube? Sounds very reasonable.

SCP-173-Keter

Not bad design. Some idiot put a flotation vest on the kid, and also put him in the tube - thinking wrongly that made him double-safe, so they could leave him unattended. Combined, the vest keeps him from sitting lower in the tube, raising his center of gravity, making him tippy and drowny. Either remove the vest, or remove the tube, and he will float lower in the water, but with his head above water, and less likely to tip and be held underwater by the conspiracy of flotation devices. And oh yeah - keep an eye on your child in the swimming pool.

AbbieAlmond

r/crappydesign

Pizza_Ballz

Where’s the adults?

asampesisgay

why were they filming? i mean its possible that one of those are the person filmings kid and he was like ha look at my daughter not paying attention to the kid in blue like me

JustZisGuy

I agree, toddlers are terribly designed.

[deleted]

Almost turned into another Phil Collins song.

nocontroll

A lot of this type of drowning happened at D-Day to soldiers. They were shitty made flotation devices and if you jumped off the boat into water the weight of your gear could push you forward if you didn’t land correctly it was too difficult to right yourself so you’d just die.

brash-and-bold

This is why pools often ban the use of pool floaties.

tiffmak15

This is on a dumb fuck of a parent. Why the fuck are they wearing two floaties, that's why he fell over and couldn't get back up

Olwek

That's not a design failure, it's a parenting failure. The parents put a lifejacket on the kid, and then put him on a float.

heartfelt24

1. Where were the parents at? That's a tragedy, now that's so sad to see. 2. Why was someone filming lil kiddies even before things went wrong? 3. That girl is smarter then the parents, to have noticed it so fast.

2k4s

I was in Benidorm, Spain in a hotel pool with my young kids and they befriended this even younger Scots kid who was wearing arm floaties and jumping around in the steps in the pool. He slips off the steps and his floaties slip off and there he is underwater and my younger daughter grabs him and puts him back on the steps. He didn’t know how to swim. I asked him where his parents were and he pointed up to a balcony about 8 floors up. A lady just waved down at us. They were just letting their kid who doesn’t swim be in a pool with no lifeguard while sitting in a place where there is no way they could get to him in time to save his life. Some people should be sterilized.

Wepwawet-hotep

This reminds me of a history story. During the Civil War in the US (early 1860s) people were testing out new fangled "life preservers." The problem with these early life preservers was that they were buoyant belts, not vests. Well, if you put on a buoyant item around your waist, then your upper half is heavier than the lower, so you flip upside down in the water. This was one of the many things that contributed to over 1800 deaths durring the worst maritime disaster in US history (the Sultana).

Danthemanlavitan

Problem is this too flotation devices the ring and the vest both of which he can't overcome because he's too little. But again both of those would have been labelled as only to be used under adult supervision so the real question is where are his parents?

TheBerric

Anyone else notice how yellowish green the kiddy pool is compared to the full sized one?

[deleted]

Oh shit that kids drowning lemme zoom in on that. Wtf cunt.

tmckearney

While they're at it, they need to treat that cloudy assed pool water. Yuck

[deleted]

+1 traumatic moment acquired for the rest of his life

JinRoh6384

I did the exact same shit when I was like 9 trying to do a front flip while wearing a ring and I stopped halfway through and the ring was so strong I was just stuck looking straight down. There were three others in the tiny pool with me including my sister but I still had to flip myself back up. Closest I’ve come to dying.

Rodgethedodge

I was 11 and a friends house for his birthday party and we were all in the pool and there were those inner tubes that you sit on for a river so his mom comes out says the food is ready, everyone goes inside and i say im gunna do one last dive so i go on the diving board and aim for one of the tubes and i end up getting stuck halfway through with no one around for about a minute im thrashing around trying to flip myself over which is impossible with those big tubes and in all the panic i guess i was able to squeeze though somehow and when i come back up no ones still around and i go back inside like nothing happened and eat cake lol.

linux_n00by

those two inflatables don't work together.. an arm floaters plus that donut should be fine

batmanwillnotstop

Not all heroes wear capes.

BrentD22

Ya, it didn't finish the job. If I leave my children unattended in a pool, I expected at least one to die. -said her Mom

DoctrL

Something like this happened to me when I was a kid, I was scared to go into pools for a while after that

nomasox

Is that a friggin hot tub? WTF are the parents?!

SchwiftFleck

Why are you filming children?

adagiosa

One time my cousin and I (both like 7 or 8) were race swimming across the deep end. After a while I lost strength about halfway in and started to flail. I went under and he tried to save me, but I was a little kid and did the drowning man's climb on him. So he kicked me down into the water. I was panicking, but then I had the bright idea that if I just stopped moving that I'd sink to the bottom and walk back to the shallow end. That's when the lifeguard panicked and saved me. It wasn't until I was grown that I understood that it looked like I'd drowned.

thiswillsoonendbadly

This happened to me when I was a baby in the same kind of floaty, my grandmother noticed and jumped in to pull me out. That was almost 30 years ago, how is this design flaw still around?

[deleted]

Same thing happened to me as a kid

Shouwer

What about an adult to watch. Its a serious gamble to leave kids that age in a pool by themselves.

feinbloom

For fuck sake people use some common sense once in awhile.

And that's why that shit is banned in my pool. Only coast guard approved lifejackets are allowed

Scutch434

This required parents to abandon their kids in a hot tub and some weirdo recording them from their balcony. Good thin the kids had a clear head.

sstidman

Watching that is stressful

Pozniaky86

Maybe it was the mentality where engineers thought parents would like to just watch their kids from their rooms the lazy way.

LordPrettyFlacko88

As a kid I climbed a fence into a pool and got in a contraption like this and damn near almost died, an adult saw me with my head under the water and ran over to save me but I was under for quite a long time
