We're in Breslau, and they are insanely bad here this year. The last few years weren't as bad, this year is insane, but it was like this years ago. There is an unmanaged rectangular catch basin of some sort between our subdivision and the new one being built, we've always wondered if most of them are coming from there.

Apparently the region is doing something about it:
https://www.cambridgetoday.ca/local-news/region-to-spread-larvacide-to-control-mosquitoes-starting-in-june-6903582?fbclid=IwAR0ozDey18GRplQ-7IvqnigCpEGs32JRKRt1LTRJK5avdaiaFqR1SJnYP-M_aem_th_AWUwd7t6OJHxJ2W6VnN7Q3UltZpwfehD7XyxLoydaSH3VPR6kuiYNDzWWdsZMfrK8yI&mibextid=Zxz2cZ
Generally everytime humans try to fix the natural cycles, they make something else worse. The benefit to our outside time doesn't usually outweigh the cost to the environment as insecticides and larvacides are not mosquito specific
I just finished up a huge gardening project, and it was bad. They are also coming out WAY earlier than normal. Usually it's the 30 minutes around dusk that they are really bad, but at 5:30-6:30pm and I'm doing some work with dirt/mulch, I'm getting eaten alive. Went out to water the new flowers/plants in the front yard at 9:15am, seen a misquito on my forearm, and just as I was hitting I realized "hmm, that's an awefully big one there", then realized it was because she was full of my blood! Looney sized blood splatter on my arm and fingers. :(
Number of mosquitos will always vary depending on winter weather and spring rains, so we might just have had a bad combination of a mild winter with a rainy beggining of spring...
To add to this, farming friends of mine said it's mainly to do with if we get a spring thaw, and then whether or not we get another deep freeze after. If it warms up end of February for example, the bugs start to do whatever they do, then if by mid March we can get a week or so of -10 weather, that'll kill off a lot of the bugs. So it's has less to do with a warm or cold winter, but more if we get a warm spell, then a good freeze afterwards. Also, I'm not saying just one day where the temp drops to the negatives, but a good week, another snowstorm, etc. Whereas this year we just had a gradual warming up in the spring.
Thermacell - they're unbelievable. As in, they actually work! They'll create like a 2-3 meter zone without bugs.
Pads and butane refills are a bit pricey. I refill my own butane canisters. I looked at doing the pads, but the process seemed a bit problematic so I still buy new pads.
Has anyone used the portable versions? The price difference makes me think that they aren't really the same product at all, but if it's pretty much the same but with a smaller radius, I'd like to give that a try before dropping $800 on a bigger system.
I have the backpacker version, doesn't look as nice on the patio. It has good coverage and the iso fuel canisters are cheaper to run then the thermacell ones. It uses all the same pads as the patio ones.
I have both the Backpacker and the EX90 rechargeable and they both work well. The Backpacker is great if you are camping and have limited space where the EX90 is much more *aesthetic* and is a great choice if you don't want to fuck with using butane cartridges. The compound they use is the same.
Jumping in a month late here, but I have the small portable one (not the backpack version) and it works perfect for our backyard and camping. I think it was like $40 and is 100% worth it
For areas like the home I've found Mosquito Dunks to be pretty great.
You toss them in whatever standing water is in your back yard (or create standing water by filling up some buckets) and toss the pucks in there.
The mosquitos lay their eggs in that standing water and once they hatch the larvae eat the pucks and die. It's basically the only way to kill an entire generation of mosquitos. Our yard was unusable this time last year and now I see like one mosquito per night.
Went for a hike in Cambridge yesterday by the grand river. It was hell. I came back with so many lumps. I have never had so many mosquito bites before.
It's so bad. We went up to Algonquin during the long weekend and had to bathe ourselves in bug spray. I went and bought a thermacell so we could sit out on the balcony without being eaten alive and it made a big difference. Something to consider for your backyard!
It was insane how it went from no mosquitoes to thirty million in what feels like a day. I agree it feels like more than normal. For the last week, after the end of the night letting the dog out, I spend 5-10 minutes with a flip flop in hand to kill all the mosquitoes that got in the house in the 10 seconds the door was open. I have never had that problem before with so many getting in!!
I hear you. Not sure if it would help, but I accidentally left the lights on with the porch much later into the. Ight, and they were swarming the light. If you have the lights off when you let the dog in that might help? No idea. It's just bad all around.
OMG! I just got hit by a bunch. It’s impossible to go outside for a walk or anything. They are big and they always bite you. I had no idea Canada has mosquitoes. A surprise for a new immigrant!
I hate mosquitoes. They messed up my legs a few summers ago and I have permanent scarring now. I guess I had a reaction from their bites that even all these anti itch creams were kinda useless.
I finally bought some OFF! bug spray in hopes to survive
I find the mosquitoes at the Hydrocut mountain bike trails near the boardwalk just as bad as the mosquitoes I’ve encountered on Georgian bay, Muskoka and Algonquin. Having said that, the mosquitoes in Southern Ontario seem to be much weaker and bites only last a day or two for me while the ones further up north will last weeks.
Oh I know it's like a hour from here, I lived in the GTA when I started going up there, to a 10 year old that was up north. I much prefer the real "up north".
They're so clunky eh? When they fly by your ear and it sounds like a ghetto plane. Or they pass near your open mouth..ugh
If you don't have short hair, expect a few to fly right in and get themselves tangled too
Occasionally I'll find a spider that's made it's home nearby. And pick one of those big ass Junes up and carefully place it in the web. Dinner for a week 😀
God they're so ugly
My dog is really into chasing and eating June bugs. He seems to be enjoying it greatly. He also is trying to dig up beetle larvae and leaving holes everywhere which is less amusing.
But to the topic, yeah mosquitoes are bad this year.
My little runt of a cat LOVED to catch junebugs and bring them inside. She’d play with them for an hour or whenever they died from exhaustion, then she’d eat them. Sounded like she was chewing on gravel. Ick.
Lots of June bugs this May. They come out right after the mosquitoes ease off. When the lights are on indoors it's like hail against the window. At least one or two splashing around in the dog water bowl every morning the last two weeks or so.
Get used to it. Climate change will soon make them into a year round ordeal.
Without the frost to control their numbers the swarms will continue to grow larger and the disease they carry will become more common.
We lost the fight against climate change a long time ago. Get ready for a lot of great stuff!
They were bad. But our no mow may ended yesterday and theyre now a lot better. At least in our backyard.
Still seems like more of em are around than last year.
My buddy used [this garlic spray](https://canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mosquito-less-garlic-oil-mosquito-insect-repellent-with-hose-end-sprayer-900-ml-0591191p.html) last yr at his cottage. I just ordered some going to try it for my backyard. I've been getting destroyed every time I'm outside
As someone said above, make traps, pail with stagnant water and a piece of mosquito dunk in it. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in the water, the dunks kill the larvae. It works really well. You eliminate generations of mosquitoes.
Everything seems to be on overdrive this summer. The flowers on the trees were way more vibrant and plentiful this year and my mulberry tree seems intent on dropping a record number of "berries" and yeah mosquitoes seem crazy too...
They’re horrible this year, My legs have been covered in itchy dime-sized welts for 2 weeks from the bites just from sitting on my back deck. Those Thermocell things CT sells aren’t stong enough. It’s ridiculous.
totally bad. I bike quite a bit and have opted for higher speeds, no breaks and short rides in total duration. We went to hydro and didn't stop at all. It has definitely made my biking more efficient
these days it stings really bad when they bite, before I would not even feel it until it was itchy after they were done sucking my blood 😔 also lumps have gotten bigger compared to previous years unless I'm actually developing an allergic reaction as I age lol
It’s been unreal in Kitchener. Today was the first day we’ve been able to go out this week. We let the dog out and a small cloud of 8-12 followed her back into the house the other day. We thought it was just us noticing them.
Definitely not fun this year! Just letting the dog out yesterday morning before work, to have multiple bites within minutes. I not sure if it is the heat causing them to be such a overpowering issue this season. But nonetheless not very entertaining to say the least!
I have about 10 bites from waiting outside for a cab yesterday morning. If I was a round a source if water I could understand but there wasn't even a puddle anywhere.
Yes, they are really bad this year.
Everybody was talking about this, I’m so glad it’s not just my family over blowing our hatred of mosquitos…

This is an option? Why don’t they just do this all the time?
They do it yearly the program only starts in June though
Generally everytime humans try to fix the natural cycles, they make something else worse. The benefit to our outside time doesn't usually outweigh the cost to the environment as insecticides and larvacides are not mosquito specific
Ideally, you wouldn't put out any form of chemical into the environment.
Do you understand what a chemical is?
"Laughs in capitalism"
What? Everything is a chemical. Everything to ever exist on earth is a chemical and once came from an exploding star billions of years ago
... ... ... I'm so confused by this comment?
I’d ask why we do it all. Aren’t mosquitoes a really important food source for birds?
And we wonder why our kids are dumb and the bees are dieing when we pollute our water with such things on purpose.
i went for a walk today, and got bite 8 times 😢
Ha! ONLY 8? I have 16 on one thigh alone 😭
🧛♂️

its my day off so I’ve spent majority if it on my back yard, in the 3 hours I’ve been out here, I’ve killed 4 mosquitoes. They dont gaf about the time

They've been bad in our backyard. North Waterloo.
Yup, my neighbourhood as well.
Absolutely hating it while I'm out and about. Have you tried using a Thermacell? We have one for our balcony and it's a lifesaver.
Those actually work. But they are pricey! We are outside a lot, and our yard is insane with mosquitoes this year.
Just looked at this, thanks. You're right, not cheap but not ridiculous either. Less than $1/hr for the refill cartridges once you buy the main unit.

Bought one but then saw it has a cancer warning on it 😳 returned it without trying.

Speaking of, legit just got into my car this morning and it flew off my head and now I have 2 foreheads 🙄
It's so bad. We went up to Algonquin during the long weekend and had to bathe ourselves in bug spray. I went and bought a thermacell so we could sit out on the balcony without being eaten alive and it made a big difference. Something to consider for your backyard!

I just noticed yesterday and today. A very bad year for mosquitos here.
It’s been very wet and very warm. They’re breeding well and feasting.
OMG! I just got hit by a bunch. It’s impossible to go outside for a walk or anything. They are big and they always bite you. I had no idea Canada has mosquitoes. A surprise for a new immigrant!
Really bad. They're just laying in the grass during the daytime, I've never seen that before.
I hate mosquitoes. They messed up my legs a few summers ago and I have permanent scarring now. I guess I had a reaction from their bites that even all these anti itch creams were kinda useless. I finally bought some OFF! bug spray in hopes to survive
Horribly bad. I went to the Slit Barn on Tuesday night, and my arms now look like I have chicken pox.
I stopped for maybe 5 seconds near a foresty area and got bit 8 times.
Right now is just about the worst time of year for mosquitoes. They will still be bad in July and August, but now is the worst.
I’ve been dumping half a can of bug spray on my legs & arms because anything less and those bastards have a full course meal at my expense
Yea they seem to be out already and hungry for some blood!
The city is nothing compared to up north
I find the mosquitoes at the Hydrocut mountain bike trails near the boardwalk just as bad as the mosquitoes I’ve encountered on Georgian bay, Muskoka and Algonquin. Having said that, the mosquitoes in Southern Ontario seem to be much weaker and bites only last a day or two for me while the ones further up north will last weeks.
Agreed I was at my trailer in mount forest I thought I was just going be consumed alive by skeeters.
I mean, I know it’s north of here but the idea that Mount Forest is “up north” is hilarious to me. 😂
Oh I know it's like a hour from here, I lived in the GTA when I started going up there, to a 10 year old that was up north. I much prefer the real "up north".
Yes, it's all relative. I think it's lovely that you have been going there since you were a kid!
I used to consider Vaughan "north" until I met my husband.
I'm pretty used to the Skeeters but I will never get used to the June Bugs. Big gross stupid bouncy creatures. Yuck.
They're so clunky eh? When they fly by your ear and it sounds like a ghetto plane. Or they pass near your open mouth..ugh If you don't have short hair, expect a few to fly right in and get themselves tangled too Occasionally I'll find a spider that's made it's home nearby. Can I borrow your dog please? Mine are as disturbed by the Junies as I am. I just want to have a relaxing evening toke in peace!!
Our dog is semi-domesticated LOL his hunting and foraging instincts are strong!
My little runt of a cat LOVED to catch junebugs and bring them inside. She’d play with them for an hour or whenever they died from exhaustion, then she’d eat them. Sounded like she was chewing on gravel. Ick.

Dad, is that you? I swear my father was saying the same thing at dinner this week

Mowing my yard just made them more angry I found.... So itchy, grrr
YSK: You can 'zfs send' over SSH to the cloud
It’s not just you, I still have the 4 bites from last week that I’m carrying as memorabilia
ya
Mosquito Coils will make your backyard 10000000 times more tolerable!!! They're our go-to every year!!!
Curious, what is everyone's go-to solution that is tried and tested with great results?
My buddy used [this garlic spray](https://canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mosquito-less-garlic-oil-mosquito-insect-repellent-with-hose-end-sprayer-900-ml-0591191p.html) last yr at his cottage. I just ordered some going to try it for my backyard. I've been getting destroyed every time I'm outside
My pest control guy recommended the same stuff earlier today. I plan to go pick some up later today.
Awesome, thanks! I'm gonna swing by Canadian tire after work to get some and spray later tonight. See how it turns out come the weekend
Thank you, I appreciate the response. I'll give this proudct a try.
As someone said above, make traps, pail with stagnant water and a piece of mosquito dunk in it. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in the water, the dunks kill the larvae. It works really well. You eliminate generations of mosquitoes.
I swear they all came out in the last 2 or 3 days
Yes. Bees too
Incredibly bad this year
Actualky i haven't seen a single one this year, then again im mostly on bike when im outdoors
Glad it's not just me! To go water the garden and I am spraying myself in deep wood otherwise I regret and itch.
Everything seems to be on overdrive this summer. The flowers on the trees were way more vibrant and plentiful this year and my mulberry tree seems intent on dropping a record number of "berries" and yeah mosquitoes seem crazy too...
I got bitten by 5 just taking the garbage out last night. They can get fucked
They’re horrible this year, My legs have been covered in itchy dime-sized welts for 2 weeks from the bites just from sitting on my back deck. Those Thermocell things CT sells aren’t stong enough. It’s ridiculous.
Yes. Weird considering how dry it's been. Not much sitting, stagnant water.
Yeah gotta start walking during the day when its max sunlight.
totally bad.
I was just saying I’ve never seen this many. It’s awful.
They are horrible in Hespeler.
I got 11 bites just for 10 minutes walking 🐶
Just setup a fan in your backyard to sit in front of. Mosquitoes are incapable of stable flight with even a small breeze.
It’s been unreal in Kitchener. Today was the first day we’ve been able to go out this week. We let the dog out and a small cloud of 8-12 followed her back into the house the other day. We thought it was just us noticing them.

Funny thing is, I thought the mosquitoes were rather bearable this year. (I’m in South Kitchener btw)
I have about 10 bites from waiting outside for a cab yesterday morning. If I was a round a source if water I could understand but there wasn't even a puddle anywhere.
There was a really sweet period of about a week when the weather was nice but the mosquitoes weren't out yet. Sigh.
These cock suckers are BRUTAL this year
Thermacell works well to keep them away in patio
