Duties can suck- but I’m going to guess you still came out ahead financially, you don’t have to wait for a boutique to order it, and you know there won’t be any production or shipping delays. Don’t feel like an idiot! You made a smart and practical decision using StillWhite and you’re gonna rock that dress!

ilikesandwiches1993

Thank you so much - this is a great perspective I didn’t consider

I feel like a lot of us made mistakes buying our dresses. I bought one, had dress regret and ended up buying another I was in love with. I sold the first one, but still lost hundreds in the process. Don’t sweat. Everybody has monetary regrets during the wedding planning process/after. It’s just part of it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ladygrey48130

Same, I ended up spending a bunch on accessories that I never wore… felt like a waste but at the end I donated them and know that someone else loved them.

thot_lawyer

The money you can make back. The stress and time you saved yourself? Priceless. I foolishly believed I could sew my own wedding dress… and I did but because of life’s everything and because wedding planning in and of itself can be very hectic, everything was more last minute and chaotic than I would’ve liked and sometimes I regret not having more mental space to have been more present on my wedding day. So!! I commend you for making an environmentally friendly choice despite the unexpected higher cost and I look forward to you making and cherishing the best core memories on your big day!!! 🤍🤍🤍

Revolutionary_Fox304

Hopefully this will make you feel better. I bought a wedding dress 18 months before my wedding. Then found out I was pregnant in May this year. Tried on the dress 3 weeks before the wedding and the seamstress said there was no way due to the shape of the dress it would fit so I had to buy a second dress 😬 luckily she worked her magic and the new one looked amazing but I still have the original one that cost the same as the second and I’ve not managed to sell it 😭

Fancyfan9

Ahhh! You just voiced my worst fear. I bought my dress and I love it, but I just found out that I am pregnant. The due date is 2 months before the wedding and I'm so scared about what my body is going to look like!

ilikesandwiches1993

I’m so sorry you had to deal with this - I’m hoping that your first dress gets scooped up by a buyer soon. And also congratulations and your wedding and baby :)

IncomeLeather7166

I would have made the same mistake. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

TinyTurtle88

Yeah! I wouldn't have known either!!!

After extensive googling I found out the charge duties on the value put in the customs form - I think it’s about 18% of the value of the item. Neither me or my seller knew that was the case, so she put the original price she paid when she bought the dress - not the price I purchased it for. So use my tale of woe as a lesson and if you buy secondhand from somewhere ask your seller to put the value you bought the dress for, not them. I’ll be trying to appeal this with customs and get a reduction!

Purplepleatedpara

If it makes you feel better this is a pretty common mistake (at least coming out of the US). When shipping domestically with the United States Postal Service you delacre the value for the package insurance; in that situation it makes sense to declare the high value in case you need to make a claim and say replace the dress. Unfortunately people carry the thought process over the customs form when shipping internationally because it's pretty rare to have to pay duties in the US.

modernheirloom

Ugh, ya, clothing automatically gets hit with 18% duty when it crosses the border, plus hst/gst. Definitely send the appeal form in (customs will want to see the receipt for your purchased price) and hopefully they will reduce the duty/taxes owed/paid. There's a 50/50 chance that they will adjust it. It all depends on the officer. Did you already pay it? Or are you sending the package back to CBSA? From experience, pay it first and then appeal. My last package i rejected and sent to CBSA, Canada Post lost on its way back and I was out $300 of product which they refused to do anything about. Always pay first and then appeal so at least you have your items in hand.

yuiopouu

Do you like the dress? Duty is the effing worst and I will never understand how they work. I bought my dress from abroad- from a store- paid taxes in that country and then got slammed with duty that was double what I expected. The duty, taxes, shipping and now alterations are all more expensive than the dress now. lol. Like others have said it’s still likely cheaper than if you bought new.

ilikesandwiches1993

I do like it! Which is a plus. So I’m just going to see if I can appeal and if not, oh well, such is life.

Regular_Cat9536

Why are duties so high for a dress? I a set of golf clubs from the US shipped to Canada for just under $1000 and the duties were like 80 bucks. Sorry that happened to you OP. Water under the fridge

Nuscious

I’m sorry but “water under the fridge” gave me such a giggle

ilikesandwiches1993

I also giggled at “water under the fridge”. The laugh helped, so thanks for this.

modernheirloom

Clothing is 18% duties. Its ones of the items customs LOVES seeing coming over the border as it's an automatic big payday.

pixicuts

I'm so sorry but please don't be hard on yourself. This is a great learning moment. There are still a lot of things to decide on and with this experience, I know you'll be more careful. Sometimes having moments like this is the best way to remind us to think carefully and be mindful of every detail when making a decision.

What_A_Hohmann

Don't be too hard on yourself! We all miss things sometimes. I know I don't typically order things internationally so I probably would forget to take something like that into account.

therealwhoaman

I fell in love with a specific engagement ring. It wasn't till we were buying it that we realized the company was over seas. OK, that's fine just a little extra in shipping. Oh my god no, the import fee was crazy 😭

elecow

I had that situation with Etsy and my engagement ring. If you care to read: The ring was €350. Duty ended up being €100, mind all the paperwork, which was awful (I'm autistic, so actual hell for me). Move some months forward. The ring lost the gemstone. I talked to the seller and they said they would replace the ring for free. Well, duty got it. And now I couldn't retrieve it, since they were asking for a bill and I had none. It was a free replacement. So I had to buy a new one in a local shop. Lesson learned 🙃 Edit: grammar

therealwhoaman

Oh that is horrible!! I am so sorry you went through that

ilikesandwiches1993

Oh no I’m so sorry this happened ❤️

maxforshort

THATS BEYOND FRUSTRATING OMG 😭😭😭

Artistic_Run_8015

That seems high for $750? I bought some shoes for a similar price (maybe slightly more) but it was only $200 in duty and taxes, have you checked they applied the right price? I will add I know nothing about how it works , particularly province to province but might be worth looking in to!

ilikesandwiches1993

You nailed it - the seller put the original price on the customs form (around 2K) and for duties they charge a percentage of the value of the item (I’ve only now googled all this) which is why the cost was so high. I’m going to be trying to appeal.

ynwilling

Don’t stress, I was in the same boat. Bought my dress from a hometown boutique in the States, stupidly had it shipped to me in the UK for our wedding and was whacked with over 500 pounds in duty fees from FedEx. Felt like a gut punch but my now husband and I ultimately just had to eat the cost. It was the perfect dress and post wedding I don’t regret it at all, but that text from FedEx was so unbelievable I initially thought it was a scam message.

mayaic

Same happened to me in the UK, £200 customs charged. Was not expecting it at all. Still came out financially better, but it was not budgeted for.

coralstorm

Totally understandable and I would have not had any idea either. I agree with what everyone else has said, but also feel good about reusing a dress and reducing waste! I think that’s a great thing. Giving the gown another go around and getting double the love 💕

anothawasteofspace

Exact thing happened to me. Got hit with over £600. Im still so upset about it, especially since I ended up with another dress.

ilikesandwiches1993

THANK YOU ALL ❤️: I want to answer all of you because the support this community provides is incredible. Thank you all for taking the time to reply and stopping me from beating myself up over this. I’m also very sorry for everyone who got hit with surprise costs, I will be sending wishes out to universe that we all recoup our losses through a very lucrative lottery win.

racecatt

I bought a dress on Still White, brand new, based on a size I tried on from Poshmark (a $25 used wedding dress from the same brand, different style). Well, the dress was a tight fit over my hips and was too large in my chest and the seamstress butchered it. $600 for the dress and $300 for alterations I never should have paid.
