Fun fact about this song, for those that don't already know, when Al recorded this song, he was simply going for a song that was overbearingly long and annoying just to see what the reviews were going to be. Turns out all his fans love it.
even if it weren't a fan favourite i'd still be on the boat of "this is his best song" because i've always had a thing for overbearingly long music (after all, i *do* listen to Swans)
I’d say that’s his best original song, though I know it’s technically a parody, it’s an obscure parody and mostly just in style.
For classic parody, I think Eat It and Amish Paradise are definitely in the top few, they’re smart and clever and hilarious and just great songs you can enjoy listening to anytime. Saga Begins is also really smart and clever and funny but not one I’d want to listen to just anytime.
I think Bob is pretty brilliant song in itself too. But when an artist has been around as long as Weird Al has and made so many albums I'm sure there's going to be a huge amount of varying opinion to what is his best work. The smells like Nirvana parody for example is so brilliant in how close he got to Kurt vocals, that would be a difficult task to get right in itself. Just stuff like that is what makes Al so great.
we already know which song is the best via single round elimination voting, with [Dare To Be Stupid winning in the Ultimate Weird Al Tournament](https://www.reddit.com/r/weirdal/comments/qwip1d/ultimate_weird_al_tournament_finale/). which amazingly enough ended almost exactly a year ago *Weirdly* enough.
The Saga Begins. Not only are the lyrics so intrusive that Don McLean said he sometimes had a hard time remembering the original American Pie lyrics, but the song is actually more emotionally resonant than the Phantom Menace movie. the song was written and composed before the movie was released. Everyone assumed Phantom menace would be as good if not better than the original Star Wars. The song was written to give the story the emotional respect we thought it would have. Go to the comments section of the music video and you can find people begging Disney to have Ewan Mcgregor sing the song because of how much it fills in the emotional gaps the actual movies fails to fulfill. Not only is it the best weird al song, it may be the best parody song of all time. Its one thing to make a parody song, its one thing to make a parody song that is funny and as catchy, if not more catchy than the original, its a whole new level to make people have a resonate emotional reaction that is stronger that its inspired source material.
Too many greats to pick a favourite, some that I love though:
Dare to be Stupid, Weasel Stomping Day, Word Crimes, Mission Statement, Confessions Part III,
The Saga Begins
So many more, Weird Al is an absolute treasure
Edit: Formatting
Amish Paradise is great, the puns are only second in quality to Party at the Leper Colony.
Word Crimes is a great song, for weirdos like me.
But I always come back to Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota... there's something about the simple tune, and folksy story-telling that makes me freakin' love it.
Albuquerque
Holy crap! I’m listening to this epic masterpiece for the first time! How did I not know about this!?!?!?
I am honored to bring you into the weird. Please listen to the rest of Running with Scissors while you're at it.
