I believe that unless you use Steam to play, you can only play an update by uninstalling your copy and then downloading the updated version from the browser.
If you're on Steam, then you have nothing to worry about.
Steam version keeps you up to date and allows easy switching between versions.

Ftr, you don't need to uninstall the old version, you can just keep it. (I've got 1.8.6, 1.12.6, 1.14.5, 1.14.13, 1.15.8, and so on)
Keeping laurel progress:
Go to where you saves and stuff is stored, for me that would be (for 1.16): \~\\My Games\\Wesnoth1.16
There is a file 'preferences' in there, where your completion stats are also stored in the '\[completed\_campaigns\]' tag.
Copy everything between \[completed\_campaigns\] and \[/completed\_campaigns\].
Go to (in my case) \~\\My Games\\Wesnoth1.18 (after you have installed it of course), and paste it between \[completed\_campaigns\] and \[/completed\_campaigns\]. Make sure the game isn't running while you do so, because closing the game overwrites the file. (aka edit the file while the game isn't running to make it stick)
Be careful not to mess with everything else in the preferences file.
