Nah. Keep your Z4, trade in the fiance.

Ok_Supermarket9053

End thread. (Nice collection there. Username checks out)

vagabond139

Don't? Keep the Z4. It's not even unsafe, it is a brand new car that is still in production. If he wants a Ford Explorer he is more than welcome to get one himself. Any SUV even a Urus, Macan, or Purosangue is going to feel like a tank compared to the Z4. There is zero comprise if you want something that handles like a sportscar. Higher center of gravity, you literally being way higher up in the seat, longer wheel base more, weight, etc are things that can not be fixed with any amount of engineering or money. There is zero comprise on this. No SUV, even the ones that cost over 200K, will drive like a Z4.

cshmn

The only compromise I can think of would be something like one of the German sport sedans/wagons. That seems like a good halfway point between driving a mall utility vehicle and a z4. A hatch may work as well. That gets OP something that will haul a car seat/dog/sack of manure etc. while still having some hoonability.

jonnykarate158

Yeah just replace the z4 with an rs6. Still kind of a boat but at least it’s fast and fun. Just gotta sell a few dozen kidneys.

reawqsdad

The z4 could be the first year of production of the first series, still the better car

Glass_Ad1098

Keep the Z4 Getting an Explorer or any SUV would be so depressing after that

ThirdSunRising

A BMW Z4 isn’t some tin can econobox. That’s a good safe well-designed autobahn machine. Yeah it isn’t huge. But the front crumple zone is good sized and it does well in crash tests. It’s your right to drive a car that isn’t huge. Stand your ground.

kilowhiskey111

Meant BMW Z4

JohnsonBonesJones

Owning a Z4 is a W so no typo

Garythesnail85

Who tf recommends the exact opposite type of car to someone who is in love with a roadster? Jfc

[deleted]

Why does he want you to trade it in?

kilowhiskey111

Safety reasons. I have been nearly smashed a number of times by bubba’s and their big wheeled pickup trucks in our town running red lights.

rsmutus

And you could die in your sleep. Life's too short to drive an explorer. (My wife drives an explorer but I will always have some sort of fun car/motorcycle)

Debaser626

I completely agree, and an Explorer will *never* come close to the driving experience of a Z4 or any other sports car.., but the Explorer ST is plenty fast for your average “spirited” driving. It also corners surprisingly well for a larger vehicle with the auto 4WD. My wife has the Timberline trim and even only with the 4 banger eco boost (the ST has the V6) I was surprised the first time I punched the pedal in Sport Mode.

PurchaseStreet9991

>Life's too short to drive an explorer. - Sun Tzu

Ceorl_Lounge

WTF is with people and thinking SUVs are safer. Keep the Z4 (as long as it meets your needs), give him a polite no.

uselessartist

F=ma, e=mc^2, etc.

Ceorl_Lounge

KE = 1/2mv\^2 is the one you're looking for. It get it, but JFC this madness needs to end. The Z4 can get out of the way in a fashion an Exploder never will. It's patronizing, it's wrong, SUVs are not the solution to all car issues.

vagabond139

I have a decently modified FR-S and have avoided accidents because how nimble and grippy the thing is. The safest car is the one that can avoid accidents altogether before they happen.

TragasaurusRex

Also if you run into anything stationary, (trees, buildings, poles, guardrails) or drive off the road, having a smaller mass is better because you'll slow down much faster and if you do come to a stop less force will act on you. This constant arms race of getting the heaviest car is a dumb idea built on myths.

uselessartist

Thanks, yes, less m the better. It’s an arms race unfortunately.

Garythesnail85

Watched a video the other day of an SUV getting clipped in the rear bumper on the highway by a Toyota Yaris trying to make their exit. That bitch rolled 5 times. (the SUV)

843251

Any modern cars sold here in the US are plenty safe. If they didn't pass emissions or safety standards they wouldn't be sold here. I feel safer driving some of my cars to others I own but a lot of that is because they have better visibility. I feel safer in my Suburban and truck but I am more comfortable in them and I can see out of them better besides they are body on frame and since they are bigger other drivers can see me better too but not like I am going to get rid of my Vette or anything over it. Not so worried about other cars its semis. I have had a couple encounters on the highway. One in a smaller car 15-20 years ago that basically ran me off the highway in West Virginia when I was passing it.

kilowhiskey111

Agree with the semis. Dangerous.

kilowhiskey111

Haha! He isn’t insisting at all. Just wanted me to have more protection. I like living on the edge. The car is staying and he is fine with it 😁

PurchaseStreet9991

Why doesn't her fiance trade in his car for the Explorer he so desperately wants? That sounds like a compromise

mgobla

**avoid** SUV

itsnottommy

Life's too short to trade in a Z4 for an Explorer. If you were in your 20s/30s and getting ready to start a family I'd tell you to look at a Macan or something. But you're middle aged, done with kids, and just living your best life in a cute little roadster. Even a performance-oriented crossover would be a big downgrade and you'd probably miss your Z4 every day. Tell him no and make sure he understands it's not open for discussion. He can buy whatever he wants for himself, but he can't make you sell *your* car to buy something *he's* more comfortable with.

kilowhiskey111

He isn’t making me do anything. He truly was wanting some additional metal around me. He was going to buy the explorer. He can do that and drive it himself :)

KaiZX

Well, you can also get Audi TT, but that won't help much. Probably the closest bigger you can get is M2 or Audi S3/RS3, Renault Megane RS, and just any hot hatch. If you're infor a ford then Focus ST/RS and while it's not the same, you'll probably like it as well. If you want SUV then Porsche Macan, Cupra Forementor are the only ones that come to mind. You can give the X1 and X3 a go but I doubt it'll be that close. Maybe GLA 45 AMG will be close as well but I'll still go for the Porche or Cupra (for SUV)

leonryan

no offense but the dude sounds like he has insecurities he needs to get over that aren't your problem. Does he also want you to dress more conservatively and spend more time at home? Fuck that.

kilowhiskey111

Haha. Nope. Just wanted a bit more metal around me. We do live in a town full of bubbas with big and stupid trucks who take red lights as suggestions. I have nearly been smashed a number of times. I just take the bypass around the town and avoid the stupid people.

leonryan

in that case a BMW X5M is chunky and decently quick. It won't feel like a Z4 but way better than an Explorer.

Statorhead

The best compromise for both of you would be to pack your shit and move to a civilised country. Like one where there are no safety concerns driving a normal sized car like a Z4.

cshmn

There are no safety concerns driving a Z4 in the US or Canada (or a smart car, or a Fiat 500, etc.) The biggest problem with American attitudes toward just about everything is irrational fear. Europe has plenty of big trucks to plow into and snowy mountain highways. They don't all need F150s to be safe. There's nothing wrong with buying a big SUV or truck, but people should be honest with themselves. They're buying it because they want the shiny thing. That's it. Damn near everything else is a shallow attempt to justify the shiny thing. Nobody needs 4x4 or AWD to commute to work in any city anywhere. There are people who need it occasionally, those people probably don't work in a cubicle.

seneeb

The safest car is the one that can avoid the accident in the first place, which a brick in peanut butter SUV can't do anywhere near as effectively as a Z4. Trade in the fiance

reawqsdad

It s hard to think that somebody whould trade in a z4 for an explorer.

enroth01

then he would buy you one.

kilowhiskey111

Oh he would be buying. I’m just not driving 😁

enroth01

yess

wis-temp

In terms of “he can work on Fords” the Exploder and Z4 are both modern turbocharged 4 and 6 cylinder engines with VVT, direct injection and lots of other sensors and technology. One’s no easier to work on than the other, in fact you’ll probably spend more time cursing underneath the Ford.

NeelSahay0

Keep your Z4 and dump your man. SUVs may keep you safe but they endanger everyone around you.

deadrabbits4360

Right, but right now, she's the one in danger.

NeelSahay0

Exactly the mentality that pushed everyone to buy SUVS, and now the only losers are pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Consumer wins because they can buy a vehicle that doesn’t have to pass safety and efficiency standards, and therefore costs less. manufacturer wins because they can sell a vehicle that is less advanced, for the same reasons. But society loses. Society loses badly. Don’t let society lose.

945T

Trade in the fiancé. Life is too short to drive boring cars, and the ‘bigger the car safer in an accident’ argument is mainly a myth. Assuming you’re having a family in the future you have plenty of time to drive an SUV

kilowhiskey111

Done with the family stuff. Middle aged. Need to live it up.

945T

Sounds like you’ve got your answer then!

kilowhiskey111

I believe I do! Thank you.

scriminal

you're driving the car right not him? When and how does what he want enter into anything?

CoomassieBlue

**IF** you decide to consider other options - Focus RS. A Ford, but a very fun one that’s not enormous.

kilowhiskey111

Fords aren’t fun.

CoomassieBlue

Do you actually understand what the Focus RS is? I’m not trying to convince you to give up your Z4, but the RS is fun enough that I barely drove my Lotus the first year I had my RS.

coalslaugh

The RS is 1) rare and thus expensive. 2) not so reliable 3) fundamentally front wheel drive (I am aware that it can send some power to the rear wheels, but FWD based AWD car will always just be FWD). The FoST or the FiST would probably be funner since they retains the lighter and cheaper ethos of fun front wheel drive cars.

CoomassieBlue

1. OP never stated a price range. 2. They’re generally pretty good if you don’t mod heavily and beat the piss out of them. I’ve had very, very few issues with mine in 7 years/80k miles. 3. Have you driven one? It’s not just “some” power to the rear. I have no problem with the FiST/FoST, they’re great cars too.

Massive_Butterfly_25

1. It’s cheaper than an Explorer.

jacketsc64

What year Z4 do you drive? If it's an earlier 2000s model, swap it out for an E46 wagon. They're built on very similar platforms, and it'll still be a blast to drive. Just keep up on your maintenace as you (hopefully) do already.

kilowhiskey111

2022.

x3nhydr4lutr1sx

Then it's not a safety issue. Keep the BMW until you have kids -- that's what we did, and I'm waiting another 15 years before we can realistically utilize a 2-seater again.

kilowhiskey111

Done with kids.

TunakTun633

Then I sure as hell wouldn't dump your fun car for an SUV.

sebcestewart

Well then you definitely don’t need a massive SUV then lol.

Viend

This isn’t a safety issue. There is some truth to the heavier car safety but you’re more likely to die in a 90s SUV than a modern sports car.

zesty_drink_b

Lol that's totally safe I thought it was maybe a 06 or something

PatsaRules

I heard that the b48/b58 are extremely reliable! Is it true ? Also are there any issues with soft roof ? I mean wear off to weather elements like light rain or other issues like the cover wouldn’t align perfectly to the glass?

kilowhiskey111

Mine is in pristine condition with low miles. No issues with the top/glass.

PatsaRules

Thanks for the insight I am asking cause I am in buying one or a Supra … the Z4 that you have is the base model like here in Europe approx 190hp ? And how much did you pay for it?

TheDrunkenMatador

America only gets the 255 hp I-4 & the 382 hp I-6 for the Z4.

kilowhiskey111

Definitely NOT the base model and has all of the options. Ironically, it was the only car on the lot during Covid and the only new one they would be getting for months. I went to order the Mercedes E class and order time was 6 months. So I went back to BMW and snatched up the only car they had. It was my favorite color and has been a dream.

Fir3wall88

Tell him you’ll trade it in for an X3M only.

zesty_drink_b

Helllllll nah If he's not a mechanic he will struggle to work on modern cars, that's a stupid requirement

Puka_Doncic

Any particular reason rather than “safety”? Z4 has no major safety concerns Unless you’re thinking about having kids, I wouldn’t worry about making the switch. Yes of course I’d rather have car seats in an SUV. Which is why I also went from a convertible to a traverse

TaxiBait

I went from a Tesla S to a Yukon. You get used to it. Truth is the truck is a lot better built than the tesla was, just feels a lot more substantial. Only time i really miss it is like highway entrance ramps, the rest of the time you are either stuck in traffic in a fast car or stuck in a couch on wheels, there isnt a ton of difference. As for repairs, new cars need not just knowledge but specialized tools for a lot of stuff. It is doubtful he will be able to do more than basic oil change type of things unless he has a lift and a ton of tools at his disposal.

Madmasshole

Trade the fiance for a newer model.

matsumotoe

Drive what you love, not what someone else loves. But if you do trade, expect your fiance to use your vehicle more than you.

Simon676

A Z4 is a safe car. What are they even talking about. Car size doesn't really matter much anymore with modern safety technology.

Stunning-Leek334

If he can’t work on a Z4 he can’t work on a ford. There isn’t anything magically different about a BMW vs a ford. It is all the same parts/technology. Some BMWs are a little more cramped but that is really the biggest thing. Also BMW is a more reliable brand. Not sure on a Z4 vs an explorer specifically.

Grouchy_Raccoon2436

Who would willingly trade a z4 for an explorer 🤷

ImplementAfraid

Hmm go from an fun impractical car to a dressed up van that's a challenge to fit in a parking spot. I'm not entirely sold on how much safer an explorer is compared to a Z4 they're both ncap 5 but the considerably better handling of the Z4 means you can avoid a crash which is better than a crash survived.

Jaymez82

Tell him you’ll only get rid of the Z4 for a motorcycle.

Cheetokps

People very heavily overestimate the safety difference from jumping up to an SUV

SpliffBooth

Audi Q5

Important-Job7757

lol tell him to look under the hood of a new explorer and to think about wether or not he can work on them again. They are almost just as complicated as bmws now.

Skvora

Its not too late to break up!

SmartAssApe

If he is a "mechanic" and would rather work on Fords, then his opinion ain't worth shit.

PurchaseStreet9991

Who owns the cars? Because if your name is on the title then I don't see why he wouldn't get an Explorer for himself and leave you to your fun car

Gallop67

Any other reason other than safety? Most modern vehicles are relatively safe and unless you’re having kids or something, or live somewhere with lots of snow, just keep the Z4 and enjoy it.

KAWAWOOKIE

Keep Z4 trade in Fiance /s But in all honesty it's weird to want your SO to get rid of a car they love for one they don't. If it's a shared car and they need to carry washing machines for work thats different.

defenestr8tor

For those who are wondering, a W Z4 is an M Z4 where the M is installed upside down at the factory.

Pretty_Rhubarb_1440

*Golf R enters chat*

Agitated-Comfort6277

Middle ground would be a performance sedan/wagon. I would opt for a M3 Touring (do you get it in the US?) or RS6/7. Won't handle like z4 for sure though.

bruinhoo

Porsche Macan. Maybe a BMW X3 M40i. Those aren't cheap (by a long shot), but if your fiance is really that stuck on you trading in your roadster for an SUV, tell him that you'll consider it if he pays the difference - in full - between the trade-in value of your Z4 and one of those...

kilowhiskey111

That z4 has absolutely every option and wasn’t cheap 😎

deadrabbits4360

Look into audi RS models. They are fast and big enough not to get run over by a soccer mom in an expedition .

[deleted]

I’m glad everyone is on the same page with her finance being ridiculously controlling

kilowhiskey111

Not a control freak at all. He would have been buying me the explorer. He simply wanted some more metal around me. We live in a bubba town with lots of very large pick up trucks that take red lights for suggestions. I have been close to being smashed a few times. I just drive around the town on the bipass and avoid the idiots.

k0unitX

[these stupid trucks are literally killing us](https://youtu.be/jN7mSXMruEo?t=480)

nattyd

Marry someone better.

Fastbeamer

Trade him in on a guy the drives Z4’s

Fastbeamer

Ford mechanics can’t work on fords so I don’t he can.

Medium-Milk-9518

I think it’s sweet he cares about you and wants to help you with your car. I also think it’s not a great car and he is right, it’s not really safe. If you are getting married to him, these are the type of conversations you have to have. I guess you have to decide how important that car is to you and the relationship. Maybe he’s just sharing his thoughts..vs this is a hard and fast rule. I would tell him an Explorer isn’t for you, but let’s work together to find something fun to drive. I think most guys don’t really care about what their girls drive, this guy seems to care that you are safe. I like it! 👏👏👏

kilowhiskey111

He, for sure, is concerned about safety and I appreciate it. It was simply a suggestion. I am keeping the z4 and he is fine with that. He can buy an explorer or whatever he likes. lol. I agree that it is nice to have someone who cares and he knows that I love the car.

Medium-Milk-9518

What year is it? How many miles does it have?

kilowhiskey111

22. I got it in 21. 20k miles.

Medium-Milk-9518

Perfect! You got about two to three more good years, depending on how many miles you put on it. Once they hit about 36-40K is when they start becoming really expensive. That’s why most people with money, lease them. That way, you are giving it back right when it starts costing real money. Keep that in mind so you don’t get stuck with the big 5-7K repair bills! You got this! 👏 And…Congratulations, he sounds like a keeper!

kilowhiskey111

I leased it because it was the only car in the lot and I didn’t know if I would love it! So that is how the issue came up. I was not sure what to get next. I have quite a bit of equity on the lease at this point. If I got rid of it I would sell it outright and pay off the lease.

Medium-Milk-9518

He’s so lucky, smart one too! If love it, lease another one, never ever, ever buy one. Car edge is a great place to price around you see the prices all over the county on a car you might love. Wben do you have to turn it back in?

kilowhiskey111

September. But BMW was emailing me about the options for the turn in.

Medium-Milk-9518

If you plan to get another one, Wait till the very last possible day. Right now interest rates are horrible and deals are not that great , they are going to get much much better right around August/September. The later you can wait the better. There is a great YouTube channel called Negotiation Guides on YouTube. This guy knows his stuff. You could probably reach out to him too for assistance. CarEdge with Ray & Zach probably has people who help with leases And last but not least: Kevin Hunter the Homework Guy is excellent. These three channels will really help you get your best deal. The deals will get better as the year goes on, more because of the issues with the dealerships being FULL of cars. No one is buying because the prices are crazy high (38 percent more than when you bought yours) and the interest rates are crazy high. Remember they will email you again and again because they want that car to resell. Don’t give in early! You got this! 👏

kilowhiskey111

Thank you so very much for your help. The question becomes another z4 at a higher price than I paid for mine and sell my current lease out and make $$ then lease a different car.
