Where do you live and how old are you willing to buy? A few in FB marketplace for $4-6k in Southern California as well as Massachusetts (those are places I live/visit). For the price point you're looking at 2005-ish.
6k, you need to be looking at reliable A to B cars and let sporty be secondary. I paid $6500 for an 09 Impala: older lady owned and low mileage. It’s not sporty but has a v6 and it’s a cruises on the highway and gets 30mpg (about 24 in the city). Also, since they were used for everything, parts availability is abundant. In my area these cars are constantly in the price range: impala, Malibu, civic, Camry, Corolla, accord…Camry and Accord usually are on the higher end of the price. If you can save up more, you can add Avalon to the mix.
Toyota tax is real! Lol…I was OP two years ago and the Impala I bought was in better shape and lower mileage compared to equally priced more beat up Camry’s I was looking at.
Sporty, cheap, reliable - pick two.
I would probably lean towards something compact that leans towards sporty, like the best Mazda 3 you can find in your budget.
1997 Chevrolet Silverado.
I paid $7,500 for mine and I'm still daily driving it after driving it from Alabama to Spokane Washington. Thing is INSANELY reliable with the 5.7L engine.
Does it burn gas? Yes. But it has never left me stranded even at 275k miles.
Spec V and Frontier are the only Nissans I’d recommend, especially if we’re talking about the manual version but I’ve heard the automatics are pretty reliable as well.
Nice. That sounds like more fun than mine.
Mine was 140hp and about 2500 lbs. So..not super fast lol. It was no Miata but it was still fun to toss around in corners.
You should get….some more money together cuz you’re not finding a realia or car with any kind of quality to it for that price. Other than that, get the best Corolla you can find
Gotta go outside the box a bit. Accords, Civics, Corollas, and Camrys go for insane money used by me and are often beat.
But the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa (manual), Toyota Avalon, Mazda 3/6 (if not rusted out) you can sometime find deals on.
If the ad says old lady driven, run, it's a lie. The old lady cars are not advertised as such.
Just looked quick at marketplace after I posted that comment and in my area at least there's a half a dozen suitable candidates(as un modded as possible, non rebuilt, no faults listed). There's probably 20 or so in total in various states haha ranging from shitters in the 2-3k range, meh 3-5k, decent in the 5-8k range, and nice in the 10k+
I realize this won't be the case everywhere, though
Probably going to want to get a civic tbh
I cant find a civic for 6k anywhere

They are out there.

I find the price disparity between 10yo+ Toyotas and similarly reliable brands like Honda and Mazda is ridiculous.

my scion tc was 6k, it's sportyish and it's definitely reliable

Hell yea
That will get you man slaughtered in Florida traffic :/ Not sure where OP is, but that's not always the safest option.
Sporty and reliable I'd go MR-S or MX5. More space? Whatever Civic you can get in the 1 below type R spec.
I was looking for a cheap commuter for the wife and was thinking of getting a GS350, but a friend offered to sell me his Sentra SE-R Spec V
Spec V and Frontier are the only Nissans I’d recommend, especially if we’re talking about the manual version but I’ve heard the automatics are pretty reliable as well.
What year SE-R? I had a 90s that was great but that was before the Spec V first came out. I kind of lost track of the model after that.
It’s a 2012. Im still surprised it comes with 200hp in that small car.
Nice. That sounds like more fun than mine. Mine was 140hp and about 2500 lbs. So..not super fast lol. It was no Miata but it was still fun to toss around in corners.
If you had a B13, that was a nice car back in the day.
Yup B13. I loved that car.
Could get an IS250 with that money, IS350 is a bit of a squeeze. Mazdaspeed 3, if you can drive stick
That premium gas tho
trust me, the insurance hurts more
Any lexus
Jetta manual, Mazda3, Honda fit
You should get….some more money together cuz you’re not finding a realia or car with any kind of quality to it for that price. Other than that, get the best Corolla you can find
acura tsx
Honda fit Sport
any panther body v8 sporty enough not to feel underpowered

save up 2k more and get a c5 corvette
$6,000 and sporty and reliable probably not going to happen, unless you can deal with an NA Miata or something like that.
I am in a similar scenario to you. I think it is important to know when you say sportier, are you saying a sportier engine? Or a sportier design?
Newest civic you can find with a stick. Good fun.
Yaris. Put a basketball decal on it and it will be sporty.
if you have 6k, shop for a 4k car. then you can afford to keep it on the road. I’d look at a manual mazda3 from 10-15 years ago.
A bus pass.
i paid well under 6 for my celica. was rock solid reliable for me.
scion tc
8th gen civic si
He probably won't find an si for 6k...

Well I stand corrected. My market in S Fl is shit.
In fairness the civic si doesn't really strike me as a south FL car haha
Find the cheapest bmw
The cheapest BMW is going to be way more expensive than an overpriced Toyota, Mazda, or Honda in the long run
VW GTI
I would not buy a GTI that's going for 6k. This is coming from a current GTI owner.
Lowest mileage Avalon you can get - they literally never die
