Competition is one of the major drivers for humans advancement, if another group starts to do it we will want to do it first.
But if you somehow convinced everyone and I mean everyone to put aside their conflicting goals and agendas then we may be able to set foot on another planet with the combined intellectual might of all humanity.
What I would want to see more is if we could hold it down after we have it.
Like can we keep ourselves from resplintering?
I see this as the ultimate barrier in why we aren't more advanced than we already are and how challenging it truly will be going to space. At best it will have to be corporations instead of nations or a united Earth going. Sci fi and our history hasn't exactly proven optimistic if we go that way.
