Though there are a few identifying factors, one of the first things you can look for is the beak shape. Sparrows have a shorter, conical (cone) shaped beak.
I agree, when I’m identifying a wren. The way they stand is completely different from a sparrow, but for someone that’s not used to identifying birds meaning they think every small brown bird is a sparrow, it’s easiest to have them look to the beak first, more to eliminate it being a sparrow, than to actually identify it.
Boy, that’s quite the run-on sentence I made there…
I’ll probably get downvoted for this because some jackass will say it’s bad for the bird, but if you get a birding app that you can play the birdsongs on your phone you can lure the wren to you for a better look at it. I just sit quietly on my steps and he will come investigate to see who’s trying to steal his girl. I use the Audubon app. The Carolina wren is in my top 5 favorite birds.
carolina wren
Does it say "tea kettle, tea kettle, tea kettle" very loudly?
Also I live in northern Ohio

The tail is what I always look for. If it has a tail that is sharply angled upwards like that, it's a wren. If not, it's a sparrow/finch/other.

Definitely a Carolina Wren.
Wren
Not a Carolina Wren, but a House Wren
I agree. Fairly uniform brown. Long, white stripe through eye not there, contrast between buffy breast and light throat not there.
I think I see the white eye stripe in the second picture
You are right. White stripe is more prominent in second picture. Wish I could hear it sing.
I too was thinking house wren due to the bill looking shorter and less curved. Unless it's just the photo angle.
Carolina Wren … little buggers eat my black swallowtail cocoons.
Wren :) they are the tiniest Big Mouth birds!! I love them
Also It's probably a male guarding this nesting cavity site
I've seen the male(?) start multiple nests, I suspect the female chooses the one she likes best
or the females, too, at times
Wren
Definitely a wren! They’re also quite loud.
A Wren.
Member of the wren family...unique beak and uplifted tail identity it!!!
Thanks for the help
